Evaluation - Part 1

In what ways does GoPoP use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media poducts?

Sandeep Shoker

The front cover for GoPoP develops the forms and conventions for real media products due to the fact that it follows many of the same conventions as many Pop

magazines do.

The front cover of GoPoP develops the conventions of pop magazines as it includes many bright colours on the page. This is seen as a conventions for Pop magazine as they usually include many colours, images and bight and old text. GoPoP follows this convention as the front cover contains many colours. Also, the masthead on GoPoP is colourful and is placed in the left hand corner at the top just as it is in many other real media products. I also used a banner as a header at the top of the page, this develops the conventions of real media products due to the fact that many Pop magazines use this use of a header.

The front cover of GoPoP challenges the forms and conventions of real media products, due to the fact that GoPoP has less text on the front cover compared to other pop magazines. Also, I placed the barcode just above the left thrid, but in real media products the barcode is usually placed at the bottom of the page or central. Another way in which GoPoP challenges the conventions of music magazines is the fact they usually include a flash on the front cover. On GoPoP I did not include a flash, however I could have used this in order to make the front cover more interesting and include more.

The Contents page for GoPoP develops the conventions for real media products to some extent. However, to a larger extent the magazine challenges the forms and

conventions of real media products and other pop magazines.

The contents page for GoPoP develops the forms and conventions of real media products as I have used a copy/editorial just as other pop magazines do in order to connect with the audience and develop the convention for which many real media products use. Also, the article supports and develops the conventions for real media products as I used 3 columns in order to make the magazine look professional. In addition, I included the front cover on the contents page in order to show the audience where each thing on the front cover is placed within the magazine; this is also done in many real media products.

However, the contents page for GoPoP challenges the forms and conventions of real media products due to the fact that the masthead is not as large as it usually is on the contents page of a pop magazine. Also, I used very bright colours on the contents page due to the fact that this is what fits in with the colour scheme throughout the magazine. Usually in pop magazines the contents page is not as colourful as the rest of the magazine.

The contents page for GoPoP develops the conventions of real media products as I used a article where questions are asked to Rythmix.

The DPS for GoPoP develops the conventions for real media products like pop magazines due to the fact that it is very colourful and incorporates a lot of colourful text. Also, I have used two images on the page on the right, this develops the conventions as many pop magazines include a large image on the right page of the DPS. In addition, I have used am article where questions are asked and answered by the main artists in the magazine, this develops the conventions as this is what is usually done on the DPS of pop magazines.

On the other hand, the DPS also challenges the form and conventions of pop magazines as I have included a lot of text and colours within the page. This is not often done on a DPS. Also, I have used less images on the left page than other pop magazines do.
