Name: Ashley

Desired Job Title:

Recruiter

Industry: Human

Capital Solutions

Number of Months

Unemployed: 6

The Back Story

While finishing her degree, Ashley was working as a human resource assistant. After being in the role

for one year, she was laid off. With most employers wanting 3-5 years of experience for even entry

level roles, Ashley found job searching very difficult. She began looking out of state and even took

temporary jobs before finally landing a job six months after being laid off.

In The Beginning…..

Ashley started in the same place most job seekers do. She uploaded her resume to all the job boards and signed up with staffing agencies. While the agencies were getting her work, it was not the kind of work she wanted long term. She realized she would have to go beyond job boards and started with LinkedIn. She updated her profile and started connecting with recruiters or employees of companies she was interested in.

Could Social Work?

Ashley had utilized social media sites for personal use only. Out of sheer frustration from applying to jobs that went nowhere, she decided to make a professional attempt at using social media as part of her job search strategy.

A New Focus

Part of her new strategy was getting organized. Ashley focused on LinkedIn and eventually Twitter. She scheduled time to participate in Twitter chats, growing her LinkedIn network and even when to make phone calls. Networking and social media to find employment opportunities became her full-time job.

She used these platforms to collaborate, bring ideas and showcase her personality. She even started a blog focused on company culture and landed an internship with Amber Wood Media, co-founded #hiresmart on Twitter, and was asked to be an ambassador for Talent Culture’s #Tchat on Twitter.

The Hiring Process

Due to the fact Ashley had connected and been interacting with the recruiters online, they were able to ask her more substantial questions. Ashley in return had a better sense of company culture and was able to ask more pertinent questions and show how her knowledge and skill set would complement that of what the company was looking for.

Now That She's a Recruiter….

Now that she's on the other side of the job search process, Ashley

wants all job seekers to know that recruiters are using social media

as a tool to find candidates. Ashley joined LinkedIn groups relevant

to what she wanted to do. In one of the large HR groups, Ashley

would offer insight or ask questions relevant to the groups’

members. This grew her connections on Linkedin and allowed her to

showcase her knowledge while learning from others. You can do

this too. Have something relevant to say, showcase your skill set

and add value. Do this and recruiters will find you. It's important to

be organized and take it seriously. Building a presence on social

media isn't just good for a job search but for building a network that

you may need to draw upon in the future.

The Job

Through Twitter chats, Ashley learned about WilsonHCG. She began to follow them and found ways

to show what she could offer and how she could fit into their culture. They had a recruiter position

opening and they urged her to apply. While the headquarters is in Florida, the company offers

remote/virtual roles and hired Ashley for one of these openings. Ultimately, she found the job

through Twitter.
