Centralizing of a Feudal State

• William the Conqueror did not just bring feudalism to England, but strong leadership as well.

• England’s feudalism continued to centralize under the English kings and the lords lost power.

• The nobles (lords) rejected this growing power of the monarchy and rebelled against King John.

• King John was defeated by the nobles, and they wrote up a document called the Magna Carta which the king was forced to sign.

Magna Carta

• The Magna Carta was one of history’s most important democratic documents.

• This “Great Charter” set forth basic rights of the English people.

• Originally these rights were only meant for the English nobles for the purpose of restoring their power, and limiting the power of the king.

• Overtime the rights laid out in the Magna Carta were applied to all English citizens.

• Rights/Principles:1. Rule of Law2. Representative Assemblies3. Right to Approve Taxes4. Due Process: Habeas Corpus(evidence of a crime and guilt was required to imprison a suspect)5. Trial by Jury

• The Magna Carta established The Great Council.

• This council was supposed to advise the king of England.

• Overtime this council became known as Parliament, and it would become more powerful than the monarch.

• Parliament is one of the first democratic/legislative bodies in modern Europe.

Effects of the Magna Carta

• The Magna Carta would weaken feudalism and its hierarchy as it began to promote a sense of democracy.

• This influence was not just felt in England, but throughout the rest of Europe.

• The rebellious actions of the Nobles also became a precedent for a way to limit the power of government, and to promote democracy.
