Blood is a fluid tissue with a complex structure.

Blood consists of 55% liquid plasma and 45% blood cells.

The blood cells are of three types. They are Red Blood cells,

White Blood cells and Platelets.

White Blood Cells are also known as Leucocytes. Since they donot possess any

pigment, they appear colourless and are called White Blood Cells.

Providing immunity to the body is the function of White Blood Cells.

Based on the presence or absence of granules in the cell cytoplasm, White

Blood Cells are of two types namely granulocytes and agranulocytes.

Neutrophils, Eosinophils and Basophils are the granular leucocytes which

have granules in their cytoplasm.

Lymphocyte and Monocyte are the agranular leucocytes which lacks granules.

NEUTROPHILS

Neutrophils are large cells ranging from 12 to 15 microns in diameter.

The nucleus is frequently multi - lobed with lobes connected by thin strands of

nuclear material.

Neutrophils accounts for 50-70 percent of all leucocytes.

These cells are capable of phagocytizing foreign cells, toxins and viruses.

EOSINOPHILS

The size of Eosinophil ranging from 10 to 15 microns in diameter.

The nucleus often has two lobes connected by a band of nuclear material.

Eosinophils accounts for less than 5 percent of all leucocytes.

These cells are capable of phagocytizing foreign bodies.

EOSINOPHIL

BASOPHILS

The size of Basophils are ranging from 10 to 15 microns in diameter.

The nucleus is lobed and crowded by dense granules

Basophils represent less than 1 percent of all leucocytes.

These cells are capable of act against parasitic infections and allergies.

LYMPHOCYTES AND MONOCYTES

Lymphocytes and Monocytes are the agranular leucocytes and they

have a clear cytoplasm without visible granules.

The size of lymphocyte ranging from 8 – 16 microns in diameter and it

has a large nucleus almost fills the cell.

Lymphocytes plays an important role in act against virus infected cells

and tumour cells.

Monocyte is the largest leucocyte and its size ranging from 16-22

microns in diameter.

The nucleus of monocyte is most often kidney or beans shaped.

Monocytes are phagocytic and defend the body against viruses and bacteria.
