ECO-SCHOOL IES Antonio Domínguez
Ortiz
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
► Eco-Schools is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world and is operated by FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) and in Spain by ADEAC (Association of Environmental and Consumer Education
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
►Their main characteristics are: A holistic and participatory approach The combination of learning and action
►Their main targets are: To improve the Environment in both the school
and the local community. To influence the lives of young people, school
staff, families, local authorities and NGOs.
► In order to become part of the eco-schools programme, there are seven steps any school has to follow.
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
1.-Create an eco-schools committee.
► This committee is going to be in charge of the development of the whole programme in the school. Its main tasks are:
To ensure that the entire school knows about Eco-Schools and will receive regular updates
To develop, implement and monitor the school's Environmental policy that addresses the Environmental concerns of the school community
To take the lead in carrying out the initial and subsequent Environmental Reviews (Step 2 of the Eco-Schools Methodology)
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
IES A. D. Ortiz eco-schools committee

Celia León Pichel (Spanish Language)
Azucena Fernández Pérez (Mathematics)
Miguel Ángel Valverde Hernández (Spanish Language)
Pablo Rivas Martín (Technology)

2.- Environmental review
► Work starts with a review or assessment of the environmental impact of the school.
► The Environmental Review is crucial to understanding the current environmental situation in our school and provides the basis of the school's Eco Action Plan (Step 3 of the Eco-Schools Programme Methodology).
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
► Some of the areas the review must cover are litter, waste minimization, recycling and energy and water consumption.
► In this part of the project, the more students participate, the better the final results will be because there will be more people concerned about what we can do to improve our school.
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
IES A.D.Ortiz Environmental review
We created a poster with our results in the review, including:
- Good things- Things we have to improve- Improvement proposals
You can see it in the hall of the high school !!
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
3.- Action Plan
► Once we have the information we need in the review, we have to
set our goals.
► They have to be realistic and achievable, that is we need to set aims we can fulfill, and also decide if they are close, medium or long-term. If we are over-ambitious,
maybewe can get unmotivated. ► In the action plan, we must try to involve as many students as
possible; in our case we involved the delegates committee and the negociator students.
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
IES A.D. Ortiz Action Plan
►Currently we are developing our action plan with the improvement proposals we got in the previous step like: Reusable paper trays in classrooms Paper boxes for recycling in the
classrooms Posters to reduce electricity consumption
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
4.- Monitoring and evaluation
► In any process we start it is necessary to implement some activities to monitor and check the results we get.
► Some examples for monitoring and evaluating the activities we decide to carry out are: Meter readings and calculation of energy bill savings -
to show the effect of energy-saving action
Take before, during and after photographs - to show the progress of specific initiatives
Design questionnaires and surveys to canvass opinions and record data
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
► Thanks to this step we are going to be able to check if the measures and ideas we are carrying out are being effective or if we need to change them and adopt some new ones.
► And of course, whenever a target is met, we have to inform all the members
of the community of it and celebrate it, because it is another way to encourage participation and reward the effort our students are making.
► Motivation is something essential and necessary for all the participants in a long-term project.
COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
5.- Curriculum work► Besides increasing the status of the programme,
linking Eco-Schools activities to the curriculum ensures that Eco-Schools is truly integrated within the school community.
Some of the subjects we can link our eco-school project are
► Natural Sciences: making observations and gathering data about an
Environmental problem exploring various habitats and the adaptations of plants
and animals living in them investigating different materials and how they are used looking at energy use, loss and conservation work on designing projects/doing research with
international connections COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
►Mathematics collating results and presenting them as graphs carrying out mathematical calculations managing finances work on designing projects/doing research with
international connections designing and conducting surveys
►Technology designing and building a waste separation point
based on the various properties of the different waste fractions
designing and making a waste compacter work on designing projects/doing research with
international connections COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
►Social Sciences reading/producing maps of the school and the
locality and using keys to highlight important sites
understanding how humans interact with their environment
using photographs, documents, oral accounts and other sources of information to learn how certain places and lifestyles have changed throughout the years
► Computer Science using spreadsheet software to organize and present
research results using publishing software to publish reports using presentation software to prepare presentations
about specific projects COMENIUS RRR - MADRID , APRIL 2014
6.- Informing and involving► One key aim of the Eco-Schools programme is to raise general
awareness of your environmental activities - throughout the school and the wider community - and to make sure that as many people as possible get a chance to take part.
► The day-to-day involvement of everyone in the school's eco activities is essential. Activities such as recycling, saving energy and water and litter awareness can only be a success if everyone is involved in doing them.
► Publishing information on the eco-school board is something easy and very useful; another way of informing can be organizing activities related to our programme everytime we organize a general school activity, such as our intercultural week, our Cristmas workshops or the end-of-the year- party.

7.- Eco-code
► The Eco-Code should list the main objectives of your Action Plan, covering real actions that pupils and staff intend to carry out.
► The Eco-Code should be prominently displayed throughout the school; i.e. in every classroom, in communal areas, on Eco Boards and in the staff-room.
► In order to elaborate our eco-code, we can use the information we gathered in our environmental review and in our action plan.
