Everyday activities and habits

Natalia and Jenny often study grammar together.

An object often follows the verb.

Statements of fact Errol speaks three languages.

With third – person singular subjects, the verb ends in –s.

Opinions I don’t like the instructor.He doesn’t teach math very well.

In negative statements, do or does comes before not. the contractions are don’t and doesn’t.

Existing conditions I don’t understand your question.

Other verbs that describe an existing condition include hear, like, need, want, seem, know and believe.

• Most verbs add –s to the simple form to make the third person singular. She likes music.

• For verbs ending in –y after a consonant, change the y to i and add –es: carry – carries.

• For verbs ending in –s, -z,-sh,-ch,-x, or-o (after a consonat), add –es: teach- teaches.

• Two verbs are irregular: be/is, have/has.

Affirmative He helped her with her homework.

All regular verbs take an –ed ending in the past tense. Both subjects singular and plural.

Negative His mother didn’t like his girlfriend.

For negative past tense verbs, use did not before the simple form of the main verb. The contraction for did not is didn’t.
