We are here to help you

Learning Resources on campus
• The Learning Resource Centre is open:
Term Time 8.30 – 21.00 Monday-Thursday, 8.30 – 19.00 Friday, 11.00 – 16.00 Sat.Vacation: 9.00 – 17.00 Monday - Friday
• The LRC is located in Bevan Building – opposite the lake
• The LRC houses the Library, Computing facilities, English Language and Learner support, Dyslexia support and some teaching rooms
IT and Audio Visual
• 120 PCs
• 30 Macs
• Hardware: A4 scanners. Digital video editing. Laser/inkjet printing. Digital cameras, Mini DV cameras.
• Software: Avid. Final Cut Pro Studio, Roxio Toast. Trados, Melisi.
• Basic IT help is available from the Reception Desk
• Specialist AV help is available from the Multimedia Desk
You can get help with the following:
• Logging on to Middlesex systems / passwords
• Printing
• Photocopying
• Scanning
• Computing problems
• Video Editing (certain media video courses only)
Library
• Over 100,000 books
• Over 300 current journal titles
• Videos, DVDs, CDs, Teaching Resources, Music Scores
• All physical items listed in the online catalogue
• Subject guides online to help you find what you need for your studies
• Specialist help from Librarians at Enquiry Desk, by email and one-to-one appointments
You can get help with the following:
• Finding books, music, DVDs, teaching resources
• How to renew your books
• Finding journals and journal articles
• Using databases and online search tools
• Finding information for your assignments
• Referencing properly and avoiding plagiarism
Study skills support
• Help with academic writing from the ELLS team - understanding assignment titles, structuring assignments, academic style, referencing, and more.
• English language development from the ELLS team- punctuation, spelling, grammar, increasing your vocabulary, and more.
• Numeracy support- for all students who need help with maths. Particularly useful to students who need to pass numeracy tests, e.g. as part of QTS for teaching.
Study skills support is for:
• Undergraduates and Postgraduates
• Speakers of English as a First, Second or Foreign Language
• Students who are on- campus or off-campus
• Students who are doing well and students who want to do better
• Students who are new to Middlesex University, new to London or new to the UK
• Students returning to education after a long gap or coming directly from another course
What does the team offer?
• 30-minute individual tutorials that are free and confidential.
• General workshops or classes at Trent Park that are free to everybody. No need to enrol in advance, just turn up on the day. Begin in Week 2.
• Workshops that are tailored to the subject you are studying (your course lecturers will organise these)
• Online tutorials and information sheets on various academic topics
• Online writing courses

Dyslexia support
• Advice and guidance on dyslexia or other Specific Learning Difficulties (e.g. dyspraxia, ADHD)
• Initial Screenings and referral for students who think they may be experiencing difficulties associated with dyslexia, dyspraxia or other SpLDs
• Advice on the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA)
• Regular individual tutorials for funded students
• Tutorials for unfunded students whenever possible

• MoDA’s Student Workshop Leader Scheme trains and employs students to work with children in the Saturday morning Arts Club – good experience and CV points, plus you get paid!

• Text HELP your student number, your name and the type of password you need (HELP M00123456 John Smith computer) to 07624804635
• How to access your Middlesex email
How to access the computers - username
• Your IT User ID is printed on the back of your student card. It is usually your initials followed by 3 or more digits.
• Write down your IT user ID now
How to access the computers - password• The first time you login, your password is set to:
• Mdx + Student Number + Date of Birth
• For example, if your Student Number = M00123456 and your Date of Birth = 27/06/89Then your password is: MdxM00123456270689
• Write down your password now
How to access the computers - password
• You will be forced to change your password the first time you login, so think of a new one now.
• It MUST be at least 8 characters long and include:At least 1 letter in UPPERCASEAt least 1 letter in lowercaseAt least 1 number
• For example Sunsh1ne or Monday63
• Pick something you are going to easily remember.
• Think of your new password now

• Your login is the same as your email address:
• Your IT user ID @live.mdx.ac.uk
• For example [email protected]
• Write down your email login now.
How to access your Middlesex email - password• The first time you login your password is:
• Student Number + mmm (the first 3 letters of the month you were born in lowercase)
• For example, Student Number = M00123456 Date of Birth 27/06/89 Password: M00123456jun
Student numberfirst 3 letters of month of birth
• If your student number does not start with M, add it in.
• Write down your email password now.
