Lubrication is the process, or technique employed to reduce wear of one or both surfaces in close proximity, and moving relative to each other, by interposing a substance called lubricant.

WHAT IS

LUBRICATION?

AIR LUBRICATION

Air Lubrication System is a method to reduce the resistance between the ship’s hull and seawater using air bubbles.

The air lubrication system is expected to achieve up to 10-15% reduction of CO2 emissions, along with significant savings of fuel.

WORKING OF AIR LUBRICATION

Three techniques are used of air as a lubricant in order to reduce that frictional drag is –

1. Injecting air bubbles in the boundary layer.2. The use of air films along the bottom plating.3. Using air cavities in the ship's bottom.

LUBRICATION WITHOUT OIL

Lubrication perform a very vital role in metalworking like-drilling, milling, grinding, etc.So standard lubricant for them is mineral oil.But there is limited drawback of using fossil mineral oil – finite resources, transport relatively little heat away from the work piece, are harmful to health and are flammable.

LUBRICATION WITHOUT OIL

So to overcome this Andreas Malberg, Dr. Peter Eisner and Dr. Michael Menner from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV makes effort and discover an alternative.Lubrication by water, not by oil.The key to use water as lubricant is additives like

celluloses, starches or bacterial polysaccharides.

MULTILAYERED COATING

Such coatings can reduce friction by up to 80 percent and can greatly minimize wear and scuffing. This is the combination of two coatings, one a solid lubricant (WC/C) coating sputtered onto a hard, wear- and temperature-resistant (TiAlN) coating deposited onto high-speed steel and cemented carbide substrates.
