Providing Clean Water to People in Need

Our mission, impact and programs

• ClearWater Initiative was founded in 2007 by US Army Captain, Benjamin Sklaver.

• While deployed in Northern Uganda at the close of the long conflict with Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), he realized the desperate need for water in order for villages to rebuild and thrive.

Uganda has a population of 38.8 million people. 83% reside in rural areas.

1 out of every 3 rural Ugandans lack access to improved sources of drinking water –like wells.

CHALLENGES

Poor hygiene and sanitation cause major illnesses like diarrhea and cholera.

In Uganda, 19,700 children under 5 die each year from diarrhea.

Women and children carry the water- time that could be used for earning an income or going to school.

OUR APPROACH

Sustainable and community-focused to empower villages.

Two year commitment to each village with a goal of leaving it with the knowledge and tools to keep the well running.

OUR PROGRAMS

Construction of wells and protected springs.

Village Partnerships

Microfinance program

CONSTRUCTING WELLS AND PROTECTED SPRINGS:

• Establish a source of clean water in the community.

• Build or rehabilitate a well or protected spring.

COMMUNITY CO-INVESTMENT

The community co-funds asmall part of the construction and provides labor and materials.

VILLAGE PARTNERSHIP

Training on water, hygiene and sanitation and basic maintenance of wells.

Help the village elect a Water Committee and set rules for collecting monthly contributions for upkeep.

.

MICROFINANCE PROGRAM

Providing training to villages and helping them set up microfinance projects that would be run and financed entirely by them.

Microloans of $10-$15 have gone to women to start up a small business.

IN-COUNTRY STAFF:

Programs are entirely carried out by local staff members.
