years

Grown up into one of the world’s populated cities with a registered population of over 5.5 million and estimated actual population of up to 8 million on the 1,568 sq.km. area.

Bangkok is promoted to be a hub of tourism of South East Asia

Urban problemThe increasing of population due to

population growth and migration, disorderly urban settlements, rapid economic development have brought an exceeding demand of infrastructure, public utilities and public service that bring the deterioration of urban environment, services and quality of life.

BMA Institutional framework for urban management

Responsible for the wellbeing of the residents.

BMA is comprised of the Governor and the Bangkok Metropolitan Assembly.

Department is responsible for planning, management, supervision and evaluation.

District Office operates field work.

Initiatives for sustainable developmentUnplanned urban growth is proved

unsustainability for many years.Over the last five years, a series of urban

planning and transportation management have been raised to be an important issues.

Community participation has been defined as the local involvement by the contribution of their ideas, interests, labour and time.

Public-Private Cooperation engage the programme by contributing their ideas, experiences, resources, labour and time without any concern of individual interest.

Urban development towards sustainable cities

Local government as the core organizer.

The first development on healthy city and healthy community in Bangkok took place in the year 1994.

Many communities tries to strengthen their community, they become stronger and can take on sustainable development for its own communities.

ConclusionBangkok is the interesting case study of

sustainable development.Healthy city demonstrates a new model in urban

development which can mobilise coordination from partner of all sectors to work together powerfully.

Challenge is how to develop Bangkok, one of the fast-growing cities, to be sustainable and livable while economic and social development activities can compensate each other, and physical and environmental development are always sustained.
