OneNote Your overall goal in presenting yourself is to limit the risk you present to a company as much as you can. Anytime a company hires anybody, they are taking a risk, the more positive information you can provide and display over a long period of time, the lower the risk you are.

To Do Lists Start now, be involved in something, take care of your social media footprint, identify your main attributes/strengths and live off of those.

Plan with flexibility Going the extra mile for the right reasons always pays off.

Be yourself, be your professional self, be an asset.

Listen to your teachers, I can speak from experience that you’re in a uniquely outstanding school district and school. Your resources are extraordinary, if you listen and do, you’ll be in great shape!

I was pretty vocal in college that I never wanted to be a developer/learn to code (and now I’m a developer)

I wanted to be a teacher when I was growing up

I did a ‘study’ abroad semester in London, which was the first time I’d left the country

I completed 7 internships in my 4 years at ISU

Neither of my parents went to college

Things you wish you knew in school…

How to negotiate! Huge in professional AND personal life as an adult

How to create my own personal development plan – in high school and college you follow a syllabus. There is no syllabus in the working world. A plan keeps you from aimlessly wandering around (some people like doing this, I

don’t). I recommend practicing by making one at your summer/part time job and sharing it with your boss

There are tons of ways to show the working world that you have a lot to offer beyond (or in place of) a college degree. For instance, internships, traveling, professional certifications, starting your own business, etc…

Outlook calendar I got this job, and an internship at Southwest Airlines, through a great resume and a series of great interviews.

Every other job / internship, I got because I knew someone.

Calendar on my iPhone LinkedIn is a great place to keep track of all the wonderful people you meet in the professional world. Leveraging

those contacts goes beyond having them as connections on your LinkedIn profile

(you have to interact with them periodically too)

Excel First, get in the door! Second, impress their pants off! (contribution, dedication, caring about the mission)

my notebook (it doesn’t matter what you use, find something that works for you!)

Things you wish you knew in school…

Never be afraid to ask for help

Keep a to do list

Get out of your comfort zone – Mine was getting out of Texas and going out of state for college - this was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made

Try to get as many internships as you can that are related to what you want to do. You NEED the work experience - the job poll is just getting even more competitive

Write out everything you have to do (I still do this today) and prioritize highest to lowest – it keeps you honest

Leverage your network

In college, I would color coordinate each class I had with a different color and blocked of time to dedicate each day

to the assignments.

After you apply for a job, reach out and send the recruiter or someone in the department a LinkedIn message and

try to set up a short call about the position. This shows you’re interested and might set you apart

from other candidates.

In college, join a club, greek life, or sports team – most require you to maintain a certain GPA, meaning you learn

how to manage your time very quickly or get a part time job!

Don’t be afraid to apply for jobs that you think you are under qualified for (specifically on the years of

experience) because you never know what can come out of it.

Trello is a great time management app that I’ve used at other jobs – you’re able to create different boards and

check that show % complete

Things you wish you knew in school…

Math matters. It may not be fun but you’ll have to take stats and/or calc at a minimum if you are a business major.

AP courses are great for college credit exemptions, but they do not define your potential.

Get involved, but don’t overwhelm yourself. (quality over quantity)

Plans can, and probably will, change.

I limit the amount of apps I use because they can get overwhelming.

LinkedIn is great for reading business articles and connecting with people you’ve recently met/want to meet.

A physical planner allows me to map out things that must be done this month/week.

An email goes a long way, but don’t bug a potential employer.

Apple ‘Reminders’ is an easy way to list what must get done today.

Many colleges have recruiting events; the more you show up the better chance they’ll remember you.

I love to travel to places with lots of history.

Always get involved and build relationships with advisors.

I met Stephen Baldwin at a conference in D.C.

Find a mentor. Finding a mentor is one of the most important things to do in college.

Knowing people will get you the job. Knowing things will keep you from getting fired.

As far as tips for not getting fired – it’s so important to understand that college will not give you all of the technicalknowledge you need to be successful in a corporate setting. When you get your first internship or job out of collegeyou will feel like you are drowning for the first few months. It’s important during this time to not only ask questionsabout concepts you don’t understand, but to ask questions about where you can gain more knowledge that’srelevant to your career. In every industry that knowledge is different. But ask what books or websites or whitepapers you should look at to really understand your industry. You won’t get a gold star for being the same or knowing the same things as everyone else. You will get a gold star for doing more and knowing more than is everexpected of you.

My favorite mentor’s name is Reagan Pugh. He was my boss for an internship I had in college, and we still go to lunch pretty regular. Reagan helped me to understand what it means to truly add value to project or organization. It’s about understanding your individual strengths and using them to contribute in a way that is unique. Often in a corporate setting, your value is measured by what unique strengths and perspectives you can bring to the table.
