What is CST?

Page 30: Lesson 1 intro to cst

It is the body of teaching relating to matters dealing with the collective welfare of humanity, including social, cultural and economic matters.

Page 31: Lesson 1 intro to cst

It helps to inform us on how to look

from a Christian perspective on the decisions that are made that affect the daily lives of

every single person in the world

Page 32: Lesson 1 intro to cst

It has a wide brief, including peace and war, economic justice, international

development, racism, ecology, the dignity of persons and respect for human life.

The Pontiffs may choose to issue an

apostolic constitution, bull,

encyclical, apostolic letter or

give a papal speech.

Page 36: Lesson 1 intro to cst

An apostolic constitution apostolic constitution (Latin constitutio apostolica) is the highest level of decree issued

by the Pope. A decreedecree is an order made by a head of state or government and having the force of law.

Page 37: Lesson 1 intro to cst

By their nature, apostolic constitutions are addressed to the public. Apostolic Constitutions treat on solemn matters of the church, such as the promulgation of statutes or definitive teachings.

Page 38: Lesson 1 intro to cst

The use of the term constitution comes from Latin constitutioconstitutio, which referred to any important law issued by the Roman

emperor, and is retained in church documents because of the inheritance

that the canon law of the Roman Catholic Church received from Roman law.

Page 39: Lesson 1 intro to cst

An encyclical encyclical was originally a circular letter sent to all the

churches of a particular area in the ancient Christian

church. At that time, the word could be used for a letter sent

out by any bishop.

Page 40: Lesson 1 intro to cst

The word comes from Latin encyclia (from a Greek word) meaning "general" or "encircling", which is also the origin of the word "encyclopedia“.

Page 41: Lesson 1 intro to cst

For the modern Roman Catholic Church a Papal encyclical, in the strictest sense, is a

letter, usually treating some aspect of Catholic doctrine, sent by the Pope and

addressed either to the Catholic bishops of a particular area or, more normally, to the bishops of the world; however, the form of

the address can vary widely, and often designates a wider audience.

Page 42: Lesson 1 intro to cst

A Papal bullPapal bull is a particular type of letters patent or charter issued by a pope. It is named after the bulla that was appended to the end to authenticate it.

Page 43: Lesson 1 intro to cst

Letters patent are a type of legal instrument in the form of an open letter issued by a monarch or government, granting an office, right, monopoly, title, or status to a person or to some entity

Page 44: Lesson 1 intro to cst

Bulla (plural, Bullae), is a type of seal. It comes in two forms: metal and clay.

Page 45: Lesson 1 intro to cst

Papal bulls were originally issued by the pope for many kinds of

communication of a public nature, but after the fifteenth

century, only for the most formal or solemn of occasions.

Page 64: Lesson 1 intro to cst

Because we are created as social beings, individual rights need to be experienced within the context of promotion of the

common good.

Page 65: Lesson 1 intro to cst

The common good is the “good that comes into existence in a community of solidarity among active, equal agents.”

Page 66: Lesson 1 intro to cst
Page 67: Lesson 1 intro to cst

By virtue of her own evangelical duty the Church feels called to take

her stand beside the poor, to discern the justice of their

requests, and to help satisfy them, without losing sight of the good of

groups in the context of the common good.
