Carlton Speak 2018 Carlton Public School E-Bulletin
Dear Parents and Carers
I hope you will join me in thanking our teachers, support staff and administrative staff for their outstanding work effort throughout Term 3. Many of you are aware that as well as the high commitment to quality teaching, the staff have put in endless hours of their own time into organising major events and extra curricula activities. Obviously they deserve a very well earned rest. Congratulations to the children for their love of learning and enthusiasm towards school. Apart from our excellent achievements in NAPLAN, the week to week school based assessments show the children are making positive growth in their learning. Equally, I have been very impressed with their social and emotional growth. Finally, a huge thank you to our very supportive parent community and the high value you place in the education of your children.
Mr Vrachas will be returning next term and I shall be taking an additional week of long service leave and Mrs Palmer will be remaining as Relieving Deputy for Week 1 in my absence.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support this term as I have filled in for the position of Relieving Principal. I can assure all of you it is a great privilege and honour to lead this school. I thank everyone who has taken the time to speak to me and the great words of support and encouragement from around the school throughout this term has been incredibly heart-warming and positive. It truly has been a privilege to lead such a wonderful school and work with such a supportive community and look forward to a busy Term 4 full of wonderful learning opportunities and events.
The students will be in class on the first day of Term 4- Monday 15th October. Please note that we do not have a Staff Development Day at the beginning of Term 4. All children will be back in class on Monday 15th October, 2018.
We wish everyone a relaxed, fun and safe school holiday. COLA & Air conditioning
The construction of the COLA is set for the school holidays and finally the removal of the fencing has opened up Area
1 and the equipment for students to play for the remainder of the term. Works will continue over the school
holidays, as will the installation of 12 new air conditioners, ready for Term 4. NAPLAN Update
The NAPLAN reports were sent home on Tuesday 25th September with all Year 3 & 5 students.
The following results indicate the sound student growth in Year 5 and some Year 3 students achieving Band 7 in Reading, Writing and Spelling.

Once you’re finished you will receive an email confirmation of the day and times for your interviews. Please be certain you finish all the steps. If you do not receive an email confirming your times then redo the process or call Ms Morrison on 9587 3717 for assistance. Please contact Mrs Hanley or Mrs Niko regarding interviews for 6 Orange.
School Camps
This week many students in Years 3-6 are attending school camps, with Stage 3 at Canberra and Stage 2 the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Kincumber. A fabulous time is being had by all! I have heard wonderful tales of experiences away and am thrilled to hear that everyone is having a great time and the staff are being complimented on the well behaved students of Carlton PS. Thank you to Mrs Hanley, Miss Elmowy, Mr Taylor, Miss Bayer, Mrs Kirman, Mr Beardsley, Mrs Palmer, Mr Omar, Mrs Elmir, Miss Newman and Mr Luo for looking after everyone so well at the camps and giving up their family time to ensure our students have these memorable
schooling experiences.
Kindergarten Enrolment 2019
If you have friends or neighbours living within our school zone who you know will have school age children next year, please encourage them to come to the school to complete the process or call the office on 9587 3717 so we can send them an enrolment package. Any child who turns five years of age before 31 July 2019 is eligible to start school. Participation in the Orientation Program is the best way to assist them with the start to school.
Tell Them From Me Parent Survey
The Survey closed on 26th September, thank you to those of you within the community, who took the time to provide valuable feedback on our school and programs. We will keep you updated when the results are in.
Please Consider Our Neighbours and do not park across driveways
We had a visit from a lovely neighbour who wanted to let us know that access to her home had been blocked when parents parked across her driveway. This was particularly inconvenient because she had a vomiting child in the car so you can imagine how difficult this was. We know that there will be lots of activity of picking up and dropping off on Friday when our campers return home and we really hope you will consider others when making a choice about where you leave your car. Our neighbours appreciate your consideration!
4Cs- Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Reflection
Last Friday, Mrs Murchie, Ms Morrison and I attended a great 4C Network day at Turramurra High School. Turramurra High were wonderful hosts and the students were living testaments to the 4C pedagogy they have experienced in Drama.
Everyone brought such rich dimensions to the day, and this is what the Network is all about. Through collaboration and connection we are greater than our individual selves and schools.
We have taken back ideas, questions, strategies, structures and most importantly confidence and energy to continue the great work within our Community of Practice.
The main themes of the day were:
creating mathematicians,
focusing on the emotional needs of learning,
the profound need and time for critical reflection,
how student agency changes schooling,
how through our students we can transform schools.

Stage 3 Canberra Excursion 26-28 September 2018.
This week, 123 students from Years 5 & 6 are having a great time participating in a 3-day educational tour of our
national capital. Whilst on this tour, they are participating in a variety of educational programs focused on Australia’s
history, culture, heritage and democracy. These involve visits to the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the
Museum of Australian Democracy, the Australian Electoral Commission and the National Museum of Australia.
Additional programs related to the KLAs of Science & Technology, CAPA and PD/Health/PE, with visits to the National
Science and Technology Centre (Questacon), The Australian Mint, The National Gallery and the Australian Institute of
Sport.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national
capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To this end, they contributed funding to the cost of travel
expenses incurred on the excursion under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER). This contribution was
factored into the cost of the trip and will be paid directly to the school. We would like to thank the Australian
Government for their support of this program.
Many thanks to the teachers who have accompanied the children to Canberra. Without their willingness to do so,
this excursion would not have been possible.

Georges River Council is asking you to turn your house Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness!
As a way to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the McGrath Foundation and Georges River Council are calling on local communities to ‘Pink Up Your Town’ to help fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses throughout the country and to increase breast awareness in young people.
‘Pink Up Your Town’ is a great opportunity to generate community pride, while raising funds for the McGrath Foundation to provide vital support to families going through a breast cancer experience, completely free of charge.
Tracy Bevan, McGrath Foundation Ambassador & Director, is ecstatic for this new initiative that will not only see towns across the country awash with pink, but also create awareness around breast health and how the 110 existing McGrath Breast Care Nurses have supported more than 47,000 families since 2005.
“All funds raised by the community will go towards ensuring a McGrath Breast Care Nurse is available right across rural and metro
Australia to help improve outcomes for people diagnosed with breast cancer by acting as a patient advocate, coordinating care, and ensuring their physical, psychological and emotional needs are met.”
Pink up our Town during the first 2 weeks of October as a fun school holiday project and make a difference!
