One of the most famouspaintings in the world has aconnection righthere in Ida-ho,butfewofusknowaboutit. Many of us recognize theiconic images found in thepainting,butitisararepersonwho knows the significancesbehindthosedrawings.

In 1937, Germanaircraftbombedthe

townofGuernicainthe northern part of Spain.Whiledoneat the requestofthe Spanish Nationalists aspartoftheSpanishCivilWar,it was ostensibly an experi-mentbytheGermanmilitarytotestcertainwartactics. There continues to be de-bate over whether Guernicawas a legitimate military tar-getorjustaconvenientloca-

tion to inflict a physiologicalblow on the Basque people.Thefactstillremains,though,that hundreds of innocentmen, women, and children,werekilledinthatattack. Asaresultofthoseevents,agreatnumberofBasquepeoplecametoAmerica,andmanyofthemsettledrighthereinIda-ho. While nothing can takeawaythehorrorofwhathap-pened inGuernicaandotherplacesinthatregionofSpain,theBasquepeoplehavemaderemarkable contributions toourstate. Last week, the life of PeteCenarrusa was celebrated inBoise. This Friday, a no lessremarkablewomanfromRich-fieldwillbelaidtorest-LuciaLezamiz.Shewasoneofthoseindividuals who wit-nessed the bombingof Guernica (read herobituaryonpage5).

TheGood-ingMu-seumdoesnot havePicasso’spainting ondisplay,buttheydohaveanextraordinaryexhibit, on loan fromthe Basque Museum inBoise,tellingthestoryofthe Basque immigrationtoAmerica.Itiswellworthavisit,but youonlyhaveuntilOctober19thtodoso. The museum, which is lo-cated on Euskadi Lane (justnorth of the North CanyonMedical Center), is open onFridaysandSaturdaysfrom10to4.Onlytwoweekendsleft.

OnOctober3rd,2013,LyleRichardPiper,81,startedonhisfinalhorsebackrideinalifetimefilledwithamazingridestothetopofnearlyeverymountaininIdaho. Lyle was born June 2, 1932, to S.J. “Joe” Piper and Alice(Johnson)Piper,inRichfield,Idaho.AtrueIdahonative,Lylelivedhiswholelifeanddiedonlyfourblocksfromthehousehewasbornin.HisfatherownedandranPiper’sstore,andLylestarted working from a very young age. Hedeliveredgroceries fromage7,andspenthisentirelifeservingtheRichfieldcommunity. Lyle graduated from Richfield H.S.in 1950,wherehewasastarinbasketballandfootball,as well as a champion boxer. He then joinedtheAirForce toservehiscountryduring theKoreanWar,in1951.HemarriedhisRichfieldhighschoolsweetheart,BettyJ.Woodin1954,andonhisreturnfromtheAirForcein1955,wenttoworkatPiper’sStore.Hepurchasedthestorefromhisdadin1957,whereheworkedasagrocerandcustommeatcutterforanother41years,untilhesoldthestoretohissonMikein1998. BettyandLyle,whoweremarriedfor59years,wereblessedwiththreechildren,Pamela,KentandMike.LyleservedontheRichfieldCityBoardformanyyears,wasanactivememberoftheLionsClubandAmericanLegion,whereheinitiatedmanycommunityserviceprojects,andwastheFireChiefforseveralyears.ForyearsbeforethetownhadaQRU,peoplecalledLyleforallmedicalemergenciesandhewasinstrumentalinstartingtheoriginalQuickResponseUnithere. Lylewasanavidandsuccessfulhorseman,hunterandfisher-man,wholovedtoridehishorsesontheIdahotrails.WithGaryandBootsHubsmith,LeonHubsmith,RayClayton,SonMike

and many friends, Lyle always rode to the top of the moun-tain, sayinghe felt closer toheavenup there.Lyle loved theoutdoorsandtookhischildrenandgrandchildrentothehillsoftentogocamping.HespentmanydayswithgrandsonTrevercuttingfirewood.LylewasagreatbasketballplayerandplayedRichfieldOutlawbasketballleagueforover30years,withGaleHansen,PeteAppell,GrantFlavel,JayWardandmanyotherfriends.Hewasalsoagreatbowlerandhespentmanyhappyyears bowlingwithLaRaeBrown,TimSanders, JerryDavis,

andBurlAkins.ThePipersloveda good poker game and Lyleplayed with many of his friendsover the years, taking anyone’smoneythathecouldgettoplay. Lyle and Betty traveled ex-tensivelythroughtheyearswithfamily and friends, going southforthewinterandseeingmostofNorthAmerica. Lyleissurvivedbyhisbrother,CarlPiper(hispartnerincrime!)andfamily,hisbelovedwife,Bet-

tyPiper,histhreechildren,PamPiper,KentPiperandhiswifeDebbiePiper,andMikePiper,aswellashissixgrandchildren,Trever,Cassey,Drew,Derek,Max,andLea,and4great-grand-children,Ryelee,Nash,PaytonandPaige. Lyle never liked to ride back down the same trail,

so we know for sure that he’s headed to the topto see what’s on the other side.

She had alovely singing voice and was knowntosinginSpanishwhilecookingandcleaningherhome.Momwasfamousforherdelectable,beauti-fuldesserts,especiallyflan,arrozconleche,brazodegitano,andherfamouscreampuffs.Shewasanaccomplishedseamstressaswellastalentedinembroideringlinentablecloths,knittingandcrocheting baby sweaters and booties, and often knitting andcrochetingfrommemory.Shemadesweatersandbootiesforallofhergrandchildrenandothers.Shewasanavidgardenerandalwayshadabeautifulgardenandhealthyhouseplants incol-orfulpotsof flowersallaroundthehome.ShelovedtoreadinSpanishandEnglishandwasavoraciousreader.Whileshestillhadgoodeyesight,shereadthenewspapereverydayandalwayshadaSpanishbookatherbedside.Shewasverywellinformedaboutworldeventsandenjoyedhavingpoliticaldiscussionswitheveryone.Shewasthebookkeeperfortheranchuntilherhealthbegantofail.Shewasanastutebusinesswomanwitharichbusi-nessbackgroundfromherearlyyearsofworkinginhermother’shardware store. She was a devote Catholic her entire life andoftenrecitedtherosaryinmemoryofherfamilyandthosewhohadpassedon. LuchywasprecededindeathbyherparentsandherbrotherfromSpain, andherhusband,Sid in Juneof 2005.She is sur-vived by her adult children: Mary Lou Limbago (Cisco), JohnLezamiz(Bonnie),MargaretLezamiz(JohnSchroeder),SidLeza-miz,(Ricki),RobinLezamiz(Karen),andLyndaLezamizTaber(Chris),andthirteengrandchildren,andsixgreatgrandchildren.Luchy was known as Amuma to all of her grandchildren wholovedherdearly.Sheisalsosurvivedbyextendedfamilymem-bersinSpain. KarmelaArrazolaofVitoria,Spain,survivesher,andayoungerbrother,VictorArrienofAmorebieta,Spain,predeceasedher.AsayounggirlgrowingupinGuernica,Spain,shehadarelativelyhappychildhoodandhelpedhermotherinthefamilyhardwarestore.Herfatherwasasuccessfulbuildingcontractorandfurni-turemaker.Attheyoungageof13,theSpanishCivilWarbrokeoutandinAprilof1937herhometownofGuernicawasbombedanddestroyedbyFranco.Shewitnessedherhomeandtownbeingbombarded,andherfatherwaskilledinthebombings.Thiseventprofoundlyaffectedherandchangedherlifeforever.ShealwayskeptapaintingofPicasso’s“Guernica”inherhomeasamemorytoherbelovedfather.Shelatermetherhusband,Ciriaco“Sid”LezamizandtheymarriedinSpainonMay05,1948.TheylivedinSpainforashorttime.HerhusbandreturnedtoAmericatoworkinthesheepherdingbusiness.Shortlyaftertheirfirstchild,MaryLouwasborninSpain,sheleftSpaintoassistherhusbandinAmericawhowasherdingsheepinIdahoandNevadaandtoliveinAmericatheremainderofherlife.ShereturnedtoSpainfrequentlytovisitherfamily.LifewasverydifferentforLuchyinAmericawheresheworkedveryhardcookingforthesheepmenandthetruckdriverswhowereatthesheepcamps.Thisrequiredtremendouspreparationandskilltogetfoodpreparedthreetimesadayforallthehungrymeninthecamp,andatthesametimeraisingtwoyoungchildren. Around1959LuchyandSidquitworking inthesheepbusi-ness and purchased the family farm of 160 acres in Richfield,Idaho.Bythistimeherfamilyhadgrowntosixchildren.Whilemilkingcowstwotimesaday,buckinghaybyhand,andraisingsixchildren,shealsomanagedtocanfruit,makepreserves,sewclothesandtoeducateherchildreninmattersofeducationandreligion. The farm prospered from a single cow named “Suzie”to the currentBuenaVistaRanchof600milk cowsand1600acres. It is throughSidandLuchy’svisionandhardwork thattheranchgrewandflourishedasdidtheirfamily.Shelovedherfamilydearlyandwantedallofherkidstobewelleducatedwithcollegedegrees.Luchy’sgiftstoherchildrenweremany:theim-portanceofloyalty,honestyanddiligenceinworkandeducation;appreciationforourBasqueheritageandcultureandAmericancitizenship; bilingual skills in Spanish and English; the impor-tanceofaChristian/Catholicfaith;hospitalitytoallvisitors,al-waystreatingthemtocoffee,cookiesanddinner,whichusuallyincludedBasquerice,bacalao,lenguaandfritos;theresponsibil-

Davegrewuponhisfamilysheepfarm in Shoshone, Idaho where hebelieved that he had the best life

growingup.DavegraduatedfromShoshoneHighSchoolin1961, inwhichhewas amemberof thehigh school footballteam. Dave was a member of the Fort Ord, California U.S.Army Reserves, 2nd Battalion and more recently was an ac-tivememberoftheSnakeRiverElksLodgelocatedinJerome,Idaho. Dave spentmostofhisworkingyearsasanoutfitterguideupintheLoonCreekareaandaDispatcherandCementBulker Driver for Idaho Concrete Company (October 1988-March,2009).Davewasdevotedtohiscompanionof40years,RhettHughesandwasdeeplylovedbyhisfamily,friendsandrelatives,near and far. Davewas an avidhunter, fisherman,anawesomecook,adedicatedhorseloverandrodeshot-gunwithhisbuddiesoften.EveryonethatknewDave,knewthathemadethebestdutchovenbreadinSouthernIdahoanditwasdevouredateverysocialeventheattended.Davelovedtotakethegrandchildrenandgreat-grandchildreninKermit,hisdunebuggywheretheywouldtravelouttothedesertandthetimber.Davewasabigteddybearwithaheartofgold.Dave’smostfavoritesayingswas“Well,Idon’tknowaboutthat!” Davewaspreceded indeathbyhis father,MartineOneidaandhismother,GarnetOneidawhopassedawayshortlyafterDaveonthesameday.
