Montage

Date: February 14th, 2015

Course: Visual Media

Instructor: Cory Kerr

Description: A motivational montage using blending of two different images, masking, and using different typography.

Programs: Photoshop

Objectives: To use different images placed in photoshop combined through masking.

Process: I began by opening the photoshop to an 8.5 by 11 inches. I found the image of the ship and put it as my background. Following that I took the lighthouse using the lasso tool and with a 100% feather took it out and placed it in the image with the ship on the land that was already in the picture with the ship. I adjusted the brightness of the pictures using levels. I also inserted a black bar in the bottom because the picture didn’t have enough pixels to adequately fill the entire space. After the black box was there I used the eye dropper tool and matched the color of the box to the dark teal behind the boat. This way the words look like they are in the ocean. I then faded the color of the teal with a mask gently so it would naturally fade into the rest of the ocean. The text I took from the last two lines of the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley and then used two different type faces and different font sizes to make the message stand out more.

Description: Creating a letterhead with a new original design.

Programs: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Objectives: To create my own logo that I would put on stationery.

Process: I created the logo on Adobe Illustrator. I used the simple shapes tool to create the inkwell and used different shades of color to create the perspective of the different sides of the inkwell. I used the pen tool to create the lines that are stemming from the pen.

I then transferred the images to Adobe Indesign to create the letterhead. I used the image of the pen and copy pasted it to make the letterhead. I enlarged the pen and markings and turned down the opacity to about 10%. I also used the same type I used on my business card for my sta-tionery and made part of it red so that the color scheme would stay monochromatic on both the cards and stationery.

Description: A black and white flier intended to promote a leadership graduate confer-ence.

Programs: InDesign

Objectives: To create a flier only using InDesign

Process: I began by sketching a couple different design possibilities. This created a basis for my design once I got on InDesign and just formatted everything in the same way as my sketches. I used the black bars, and the circles for repetition and to create an easier theme to follow. The circle’s also match the “O” in the companies logos. I put the circle’s diagonal from each other to create a balance in the design. I also put the title in white inside the black bar for contrast and to help it stick out to the reader. The image, logo, and content were all provided for me for this flier.

Description: Three different logo options for a company

Programs: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives: To create three original logos only using Illustrator.

Process: Using Illustrator was surprisingly simple for creating these logos. For the first logo I just used the rectangle tool to create the main body of the truck, as well as the initial square for the head. I then added a triangle and rotated it on top of the square of the truck to make it look like a truck. I then used the ellipses tool to create two white circles that would represent the wheels in the design. The other logos are also the rectangle tool that I used and just manipulated to get the desired effects. I used the direct selection tool to give the boxes a more 3D look. The bottom logo I used the rectangles in much the same way, to create the right look for the dolly. Then I used the ellipses tool to make a black circle, then I added a white circle inside the black one to make it more like a wheel. The text are all just different types.

Description: A two sided brochure

Programs: Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Objectives: To create an original brochure with at least one picture text-wrapped.

Process: I used Adobe InDesign to layout this design. I used facing pages to make it double sided. I then split my top page into thirds. The right side is the front of the brochure as it will be folded over, and the left side is the back. Then I had the inside split into sections likewise so it would match the folds on the front and back. It was set up so the three pictures on the right side would still be seen when the brochure was closed because that side of the page is longer.

I made the logo in Adobe Illustrator and used the ellipsis tool to make the outline of the surf-board and used the pen tool to make the decorative lines going through the boards. The color I used I took from the picture that is on the front page. I used images from the internet to help get the ocean in the background. I text wrapped the image of the surfboard by cropping the back-ground of the surfboard out in Photoshop. I then transferred it to InDesign and text wrapped it.

Description: A webpage that is meant to show my skills at creating and formatting the webpage and logo.

Programs: Photoshop

Objectives: To use different images placed in photoshop combined through masking.

Process: I used Text Wrangler to create this website. I previously had no experience with this software. I also used Photoshop to crop my logo so it would be easier to insert into the web-page. I connected a pre made CSS document, that I then tweaked to fit to my website, to my HTML that I used for the website. I inserted my logo into the HTML after that. I then I changed the color of the background to match my logo. I used the eyedropper tool in photoshop to match the right color of red for the background.

Web Page

Date: February 7th, 2015

Course: Visual Media

Instructor: Cory Kerr

Description: Using good photography skills and editing skills with photoshop. Adding design and color into an original photo.

Programs: Photoshop

Objectives: To use a picture I took and to create a central message using a unified color

scheme.

Process: I used a Sony A700 DSLR camera to capture the image. I put the shoes on a wooden floor so the colors would mesh for the monochromatic brick scheme I had chosen. I made the shoes off center in the shot so that it would add a balance and wouldn’t be centered. In photoshop I added Vibrance and brightness which was most effective at bringing out the color I needed, I also shifted some of the colors to help them stay to the shade of brick that I needed. As I looked at my color choice I decided that keeping it simple with these colors would be most effective at helping the text and message I chose stick out.

Photodesign

Date: January 31st. 2015

Course: Visual Media

Instructor: Cory Kerr

Description: A full bleed color flier promoting a fundraiser created only on a word document.

Programs: Microsoft Word

Objectives: To create a full bleed flier using an image I scanned in.

Process: I scanned in the picture of the Eiffel Tower and then shifted it left to divide the flier into thirds. I then put two separate color boxes to fill up the other two thirds of space left on the flier but made one bigger than the other to also make it fit into thirds again. I then added a third small color box with a simple line design to help lead the eye from one piece of text to the next. I used a triadic color scheme to go with the indigo already present in the sky around the Eiffel Tower. The text I did in white to help create contrast between it and the color background behind it. I adjusted the margins to .13 on all sides to help it be a full bleed flier as well.
