    1.3 ConceptsActive Speech Level (dBm0) This is a measure of the level (dBm0) of the sub-

    scribers speech. To ensure high understanding and listening comfort, it is important that the received or sent speech level is optimal. Further-more, the performance of different equipments in the speech path varies depending upon the signal levels. Each active device, such as a speech codec, has a certain dynamic range over which it functions to specification. Automatic Level Control (ALC) is a useful solution to this problem. It provides an effective, non-obtrusive means of improving the perceived speech quality of a call by automatically optimizing active speech levels. Active speech level information can be used for the finding of the optimum settings for the ALC.

    ISU Interface signalling unit. Functional unit that performs the signalling related tasks of an MGW.

    Context A context is used to logically group one or more termination(s) to belong to the same call (or connection). Normally the context is created by an MGW when the MSC Server adds the first termination to it. Each context has an identifier that is unique within one Physical MGW. In U4.2, the maximum number of simultaneous Context IDs per ISU is 13,000. Both identifiers are allocated by the MGW. Termination Ids are not dynamically allocated, but context Ids are.

    Context Id over-rotation: When assuming, in theory, that one ISU handles 500 context (connections) at one second (quite heavy load), and call duration is 1 second (quite short calls). With the above assump-tions it would take 65535(ctx) / 500(ctx./sec.) = 131secondes for the context id to over-rotate.

    Doubletalk This is a condition where one participant in a conversation starts talking before the other has finished i.e. both participants are speaking at the same time. High doubletalk ratio can be a result of long end-to-end delays or echo in the connection. Monitoring the occurrence of double talk is a useful indicator of the customer perception of quality

    Echo Path Delay (ms) This is a round-trip delay of the electric echo from PSTN hybrid circuit that MGW echo canceller (EC) detects. It is essential that echo path delay matches the working delay window of MGW echo canceller. By monitoring the echo path delay of each PSTN circuit, it can be assured that the echo canceller works optimally, or in case of very long PSTN links, the pre-delay setting of EC can be adjusted to compensate the delays of long links.

    Echo Return Loss (dB) This is a measure of the difference in power between the callers speech level and the echo that comes back from the PSTN hybrid circuit. The higher this value is, the lower the level of the echo compared to the level of the speech, and the better the echo canceller functions.

    Egress Traffic direction out of a network element. Note: The traffic direction is to be determined with respect to one link termination point. If the termi-nation point is connected, the egress direction for one termination point is the ingress direction for the other termination point and vice versa.

    Frame Erasure Rate (%) This represents a percentage of received bad or lost speech frames to the number of total speech frames. Traffica is able to monitor both Total FER and Link FER. High FER values may indicate problems in radio access network or in the backbone depending on the measured termination.

    Ingress Traffic direction into a network element. Note: The traffic direction is to be determined with respect to one link termination point. If the termina-tion point is connected, the egress direction for one termination point is the ingress direction for the other termination point and vice versa.

    Inter Arrival Jitter This is a short term jitter calculated over the last packets of a call. Inter arrival jitter gives an overview of the network level jitter trend as there is a huge number of terminated calls in every second.

    Mean Opinion Score In network quality testing, absolute category rating (ACR), listen-ing only tests are typically applied to collect subjective responses of the performance of telephone transmission systems. The responses on a

    five-point scale are averaged to get the MOS score. Each number from 1 to 5 has been associated with a definition of audio quality, like poor to excellent. A family of objective algorithms has been standardized in ITU-T for objective evaluation of speech quality. Objective speech quality measurement algorithms estimate subjective speech quality obtained in ACR tests. Furthermore, ITU-T Recommendation P.564 specifies objective speech quality assessment models that predict the impact of observed IP network impairments on the one-way listening quality experienced by the end-user in IP-based telephony applications. In NSN, these models have been expanded to allow MOS evaluation of access interfaces as well as the backbone interfaces.

    Noise Level (dB) This measures the level of background noise. High noise level is very disturbing and can reduce the intelligibility of speech. To overcome these issues and to improve overall speech intelligibility in noisy condi-tions, background noise level can be reduced in the speech signal with Noise suppression (NS). NS is also useful in the network where there is zero or only modest noise reduction in the mobile terminal.

    Packet Loss Packet loss degrades the speech quality as speech codecs need to compensate for lost packets. If many consecutive packets are dropped, or the packet loss is high, speech quality can fall to an unacceptable level. Packet loss can occur with overload situations in the IP network when the routers drop packets randomly depending on their queuing method. Also, over or under flows in the MGW jitter buffer can cause packet loss. IP packet loss (%) describers the ratio of lost IP packets to the sum of all transmitted IP packets.

    Peak to Peak jitter Maximum difference between the delays of two sequential packets within a single call. NSN Rel-4 MGW provides a configurable jitter buffer target fill to compensate for the jitter caused by the backbone. The jitter buffer size is a trade off between the delay and the packet loss, i.e. a small jitter buffer decreases the end to end delay but increases the packet loss and vice versa.

    Quantile Jitter IP Packet delay variation within one single call. This gives an estimate of the real jitter encountered by the jitter buffer. This value is useful for subscriber specific troubleshooting.

    Speech Activity Factor This is the ratio between the active speech time and the total time elapsed during the call. It can be used as an aid for backbone dimensioning since the average bit rate per call can be estimated from codec information and its speech activity factor. Very high values may also indicate corrupted audio data i.e. faulty channel. Low values may indicate muted calls. Speech Activity Factor is calculated for both ingress and egress directions.

    Stable echo path model Stable echo path model means that the adaptive filter of the echo canceller has converged adequately to the echo.

    Structure of the Context ID The Length of a Context ID is 2XWORD. For example, FFFF EEE The first word (FFFF in the above example) includes the logical address of the ISU. The second word (EEEE in the above example) includes the running number. It is the number reserved by this context. It is a number from 0 to 65535.

    If the number of the last created context was 13, and a new context was reserved, its number will be 14.

    Termination There can be roughly two types of terminations: Physical and Ephem-eral.

    Ephemeral terminations are, for example, switched ATM virtual connec-tions that exist only during the call.

    Physical terminations are PCM's timeslots that are preconfigured to the MGW. TDM Termination id is allocated by MSC Server by CGR, PCM and TSL. ATM and IP Terminations are dynamically allocated by MGW.

    Each termination has an identifier that is unique within one MGW. This identifier can be incomplete so that the MSC Server is able to address more than one of them with one operation. This is called the wildcarding mechanism in in the H.248 protocol.

    The H248 specification also specifies that the terminationID is struc-tural. The structure usage is specified in 3GPP TS 29.232

    VMGW A physical MGW can be divided into several (max. 85) Virtual MGWs. One interface signalling unit (ISU) can have a maximum of five VMGWs configured.

    VMGW IP Address VMGW IP Address identifies used control IP Address between MGW and MSC. The Virtual MGW can be identified by a VMGW IP Address and port. The Physical MGW is identified by the C-number.

    2 Principles of RTT report processingTraffica for MGW adaptationMGW sends RTT reports to Traffica via a dedicated UDP-over-IP interface. The inter-face is implemented into Nelmon, which acts as a data mediator between MGW and Traffica. Nelmon is an external Linux Server used for monitoring and storing user plane characteristics in MGW.

    The report received by Traffica consists of header information and the actual voice quality content.

    The header includes e.g. termination start and end time, Virtual MGW IP and port, physical index of ISU unit, H.248 termination id, H.248 context id, H.248 error code, internal error, C-number, local and remote IP addresses, IP based route information, TDM CGR, TDM PCM, ATM Interface id, ATM AAL2 VPI, ATM AAL2 VCI and ATM AAL2 CID.

    The voice quality data which is sent to Traffica from the MGW consists of the Real-Time Userplane Measurement Report. These user plane measurement parameters are reported at the end of each termination in MGW.
