On Febrtiaiy lOlh, a contingent of 24 Taconics attended the NYRRC Cltib Nile Awards banquet. We witnessedthe highlight of the niglil, the crowning of two Taconics asRunners of the Year in their age group, NICK CASWELL andROB BRIGLIO. Both Nick and Bob had outstanding years in1995. Nick consistently scored high in the middle and shorterdistances, while Rob tended to excell at the longer distances.Guest presenters for their awards included liw "Mr.G" Gikofskyand Mort Kail from the Gannett newspaper group.

In the team categories, Taconic walked away withthree of the seven crystal bowls to be awarded. (.)f course,Taconic captured the Mens Masters Division (40"s) led bystand-out individual award wiimers, Nick Caswell and RobBriglio, and Joe Porcaro (who was nominated foi" an age groupaward and who was presented the team bowl by his teammates.)The Mens Veterans (50"s) award was picked up by Rich Nash,Budge Huntoon, and Jack Brcnnan. According to a study from the Nutrition Program and theSports Medicine Institute, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (Buffalo, NY) and reported in Club Industry. Jan. '96 by KathyFeeney, highly fit runners may perform better if they don't overlyrestrict fat in favor of carbohydrates.

The study measured three groups of runners' aerobic capacityand running time to exhaustion alter 7 days on the following diets:high-carbohydrate (3,500 cal/15% fat), normal (2,700 cal/24%fat)and high fat (3,500 cal./38%fat). The high-fat diet produced thegreatest aerobic capacity and longer running time, followed by thehigh-carbohydrate diets.

Researchers concluded that because the runners were alreadyphysically fit, they were better able to utilize the high-fat diet's freefatty acids as an available energy source. Past studies of the diet/aerobic capacity connection had used individuals who were not ashighly fit as those included in this study.

Fat intake in the diets of non-competitive athletes shouldnot exceed 30% of total calories. According to the authors of thisstudy, however, elite athletes should not severely restrict fat intake, because it may adversely affect their performance

Why Strength Training?•It prevents muscle loss & increases muscle mass. (Adults losean average of 6 lbs. of muscle per decade. Resistance trainingpreserves muscle mass & strength.)•It increases the body's metabolic rate. (During each decade, the average adult has a 2-5% reduction in metabolic rate. Adding3 lbs. of muscle, however, can increase metabolic rate by 7%.)•It increases bone-mineral density. (Studies show that olderpeople who strength train can increase bone density in the spineand upper femur.)

•It improves glucose metabolism. (Researchers found thatglucose uptake increases 23% after just 4 months of strengthtraining.)•It reduces body fat. (In a recent study, researchers found thatpeople who strength trained for 3 months lost 4 lbs. of fat. eventhough they upped their daily calorie intake by 15%.)•It increases gastrointestinal transmit time. (This can reducethe risk of colon cancer.)•It lowers resting blood pressure. (And when done in tandemwith aerobic exercise, it can improve blood-pressure readingseven more.)•It can improve blood lipid levels.•It can reduce low-back pain. (People who experience low-back pain report less pain after 10 weeks of strength-trainingexercises that target the lower spine.)•It can reduce the pain of arthritis.-Source: Club Industry, January 1996, page 30.

Brrrrrrrr - February 4 - The Freezer 5KBy Jerry Rudlauer

On Sunday, February 4. the New York MetropolitanArea, like most of the northern reaches of the United States, wasentrenched in a deep freeze. For most, the concerns of the dayinvolved staying home and keeping warm, while worrying aboutcostly heating bills and damaged water pipes. Early morningtemperatures hovered at around 5 degrees Fahrenheit throughoutthe region, and stiff winds accompanying the low temperaturesmade a wind chilled temperature of around -25!

While bitter cold conditions kept the great outdoorsuninhabited and serene, a curious rush of activity was brewing ati'DR State Park in Yorktown. A remarkably hearty group ofmen and women gathered for a yearly ritual organized by theTaconic Road Runners Club: "The Winter Freezer Fives Series."

Over 60 participants gathered around the registrationarea before the start of the race, eager to test their physical limitson a 5,000 meter course featuring rolling hills, slippery terrainand bone-chilling head winds over 3/4 mile on the course's backs t r e t c h .

Until the final moments before the race, it was notknown whether or not a formal race would take place, in thepast, adverse conditions converted a Freezer Fives Race from acompetition to a "Fun Run." where participants would run the

l " r e c / c r 5 K - I " u h r i i a r v 4 . 1 9 9 6

course, but no scoring would be conducted. I lowever, on themorning of the race, the roads were only minimally slick, thanksto a diligent and skillful plowing job done by the staff at FDR.The runners expressed concern over slick road surfaces, but notthe cold weather, for this was the 1-reezer Fives Series.

Cancelling a Freezer Five race on account of cold weather wouldbe like cancelling a swim meet because of wet water!

Although traditional runner rivalries and friendlycompetition existed on race day, the feeling that predominatedon this day was testing one's perseverence against the harshelements of the day. On this day, one was not pressured intoliving up to PR standards.

In addition to the runner's stellar performances, thevolunteers need to be recognized for making this event runwithout a hitch. The volunteer core pulled together when acertain race director brought ample beverages but forgot to getcups(Duh!) Thanks for the bail-out! The spirit of selflessparticipation in running this event under trying conditions pointsout how special this club is and that the good-willed feelingsclub members have for each other and for the sport of runningare worth being nurtured. Happy running, and I hope to see youall in the Spring!

Heel Pain Relates to Tight Calves

Have you been plagued by Achilles tendon problems or plantar fasciitis (a nagging inflammation along the fibrous band running from your toes to your heels)? If so, do a wall push-up. That'swhat American Running and Fitness Association's Editorial Advisor Gary Gordon, D.P.M., suggests.

The plantar fascia connects to the Achilles, which in turn connects to the calf muscle. If yourcalves are tight, which is the case for many runners, you will put too much pressure on your Achillesor plantar fascia. This can result in pain behind or under the heel, or along the bottom of your foot.

"I had severe plantar fasciitis in 1982 and finally had to have surgery," said marathon runner,Pete Pfitzinger. "The problem started to come back when I resumed training. That's when I was toldto start stretching my calf muscles. I've never had a problem since."

To do a wall push-up, stand an arm's length from a wall, hold your arms straight, shoulder'swidth apart, in front of you so your palms are against the wall. Keepingyour knees straight, lean into the wall, bending your arms (if you have tomove your feet, you're too far from the wall). You should feel a stretch inyour calf Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Push away from the wallto return to your starting position. Repeat six to eight times. Do the samestretch again, but with your knees slightly bent.(Source: Paper presenied by Gary Gordon, D.P.M., 1995 American Medical Athletic Association Boston Marathon Symposium, April 16, 1995.)

Looking Good at the Freezer 5M57 fun-seeking runners came out on Februarv' 18 for the Freezer 5 Milcr. Braced for frigid temps and icy winds, not to

mention slick spots on the road, these runners set off for a two-loop trek through FDR Park. Here are some lips from 365 Health Hints on how to protect ) Our skin in all kinds of weather to protect those good looks:

•Shower or bathe with a mild soap or transparent glycerin soaps to prevent dr\'. flaky skin. Don't use deodorant soaps on your face-they're too harsh for sensitive facial skin.•Avoid alcohol-based astringents, toners, or after-shave lotions, which dry the skin.•Apply a moisturizing lotion immediately after showering or bathing, (Dry skin makes wrinkles more noticeable, so using amoisturizer makes wrinkles less noticeable.)•Use a room or furnace humidifier during the winter months, to further pre\ent dr> skin.•Apply sunscreen lotion with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher whcnc\'er you go outdoors.

Here are some lips from fellow runners:•Cover your skin, idiot. The wind is a killer, unless you like the leather-look.•Grease up with vaseline. It keeps your face from cracking when it turns to ice.•Hold the pose. Smile lines look good - if you keep smiling!

Welcome to the following new members. Please join us at Taconic races and/or functions in the near future.

J a i m e G o m e zTerence Byrne runs locally in the Pumam area and around reservoirs. He likes to run for stress relief and to get exercise outdoors, anytime. Terence would like to run a 3:30 Marathon. Good luck!Kerry Cahill started running last year. She enjoys trail miming. (Why don't you try the Mudders and Grunters coming up at the end ofMarch?!) and sets her sights on mnning a Marathon. (There is a group that trains on Saturday mornings at the Pumphouse, if you'reinterested. Call a board member for details.)Daniel Levy just completed his first Marathon and would possibly like to try a Triathlon. (We'd recommend Taconic's Biathlon inAugust). Daniel can be seen mnning on quiet trails, but his favorite race is the Tavern on the Green Breakfast mn.James Nortz mns primarily in the midday and would like to set his sights on mnning the NYC Marathon.Pete Rivera just started mnning. His favorite distance is 5 miles and Pete likes to mn in the parks in the evenings.Gregory Sautner mns in FDR Park in the mornings, as do many Taconic members.Wendy Summer (Rich's sister who visited during the Share-A-Walk last October) was very impressed with us "New Yorkers". Shewent back to California with a changed opinion. She was more than happy to lend a hand while she was here to that very worthy cause.Chris Tippin looks forward to mnning with his friends where it is scenic and there are no cars. He would like to increase his speed in5K and lOK mns. (Try the track workouts in the summer with Doug Miller a.k.a. "Killer Miller"). Chris likes to compete inTr ia ih lons .

Helen Gordon calls TRRC "the tough reliable readiness crew". See you out there, Helen!Joe Handleman's favorite race is the Sybil 50K. He would like to qualify for Boston, complete another Sybil and have a race total of1,100. (He is currently at 10411!) Joe runs on dirt raods, trails and in the woods.Thomas and Louise Lambert enjoy the Kingston Classic. Thomas trains on local roads and parks and runs for the physicalconditioning. (Say "hi" to Louise for me.)The Nash family can be seen most anywhere and anytime connected with a Taconic event. Only two runners (better known as crazypeople) are in the family at the present time. Rich looks forward each year to the Club Team Championships and he would like to break60 seconds for the 400 meters. He would like to remain injury free for the remainder of the year. (I would like that, also!)James O'Brien runs in the FDR Park and the Croton Reservoir area. He would like to stay injury free (that seems to be a mantra of the50+ age bracket.) Jim looks forward to the NYC Fire Police run.Marc Oxman can be seen running early in the morning (rain, shine, snow, sleet, hot or cold!) around the FDR Park area. He wants tokeep running and stay in good health.Keith Panzer (A.K.A. the manic marathoner) to no surprise, his favorite race distance is the Marathon. His favorite race is the BostonMarathon. Keith would like to run a 100 miler (I'll drive it thank you very much!) and enjoys the post race refreshments.Toby Reif enjoys the social aspect of running. Her favorite race is the Dutchess half-marathon. Toby can be seen running mornings.Charles Sprauer looks forward each year to Sybil and the Turkey Trot. He would like to recover from a long time injury.Debra Terranova can be seen early in the morning (wearing her headset) running in FDR Park or around her area. Her goals are tokeep up with Doug "Killer" Miller's track work outs and the crazy man Rich Nash (don't I know that!) Deb's favorite race is Muddersand Grunters (of which she was one of the muddiest last year!)Don Villenueve runs Sybil and enjoys the 50K+ distance, better known as an ultra marathoner. He does his training in the evening, running in the woods and on trails, but is also part of the Saturday morning "pump house gang."Pete Warner's favorite race is the Cold Spring lOK, which is also his favorite race distance.Christopher Feehan and Mike Daley applaud Katy Quinn on her excellent job on the Taconic Running Life, as many of us do!!

Couples RelayBy Steve Calidonna

The 1995 Couples Relay capped off another fine TRRCholiday/race season. Prior to the start, race director SteveCalidonna quipped "As the final event of the 1995 Taconiccalendar, the relay is typically a race at which people try to peak. Many runners actually pass on the NYC Marathon in order togive a complete, total, gut-wrenching, BTW effort." While thatmay be a noble sentiment, the truth is that it usually snows thenight before the race and the only runners inclined to battle theelements and hilly course are not at all interested in themarathon.

In truth, the relay is a low key event. There are not milemarkers or water stations. The distance depends on the snow(this year about 9 inches), and there is no clock. In spite of itsmodest profile, the race has seen any number of epicconfrontations. (Especially those involving people who park inthe care-taker's driveway.)

This latest version brought 19 couples to the startingline. While each team claimed to be more interested in a

pancake breakfast in front of a roaring fire, they eagerly beganthe savage battle which lay between them and it. At stake in the6 combined-age categories was a trip to the merchandise table.Once there, the fleet would choose from top-quality head bands, gaiters, hats, socks, golf balls and commemorative CouplesRelay pins. Also in place was the cheesecake and champagneraffle. With his legendary generosity, Gary Steinel once againbaked and donated the cheesecake. Finbar Gurdy forgot to bringthe champagne, but it all worked out for the best. You see, Garyand his race partner, Nancy Laun, won the raffle, so Nancy tookthe cheesecake and Gary took a dozen golf balls in lieu of theforgotten champagne.

Many thanks to Katy Quinn for the flyer and to EdMcLaughlin and Maria Bleasdale for the pancakes.

The running played out as a series of 2 and 3 personbattles. The men ran first this year, and the women brought thebattle to its close. You had to be there to get the full impact, butglean what you will from these final standings:

1995 was an intense and wonderful year for ourMasters Team. Taconic's 40-49 year olds won the NationalCross Country lOK in Canandaigua, NY as well as the agedivision in the 50 Mile, 8 man Ocean-to-Sound Relay onLong Island, the New York Road Runners Club Grand Prixand the Metropolitan Athletic Congress Grand Prix.

Nick Caswell and Rob Briglio ran so manyexceptional races that NVRRC honored both of them asRunner of the Year in the 45-49 age category. Joe Porcaroran well enough to be a nominee in the same age group.Combined, Nick and Bob had 18 age group wins in the City.Caswell was also 8th overall in the Long Island Half-Marathon with a time of 1: 14:28, but he feels his best race wasplacing 46th out of 6,000 in the 10 Mile Cherry Blossom inWashington, D.C. with a time of 55:08.

Briglio was on the winning American team in themarathon at the World Veteran's Games in Buffalo, NY. Hewas the second American finisher with a time of 2:45:10 atLong Island. Theirs was a well-deserved tie for the NYRRCRunner of the Year.

M a s t e r s Te a m

The NY City Marathon is a part of the NYRRCGrand Prix Series, and for the first time ever, TRRC scored teampoints in this race with Briglio, Caswell and Bob Hermesch. That same week-end, Steve Calidonna, Joe Porcaro, KenFilmanski and Tony Galfano traveled to Long Island to win adouble points race in the MAC Grand Prix series, thismaking it possible for us to win that series; which we did.. .andthe $600 that went with it!

On the week-end of the Canandaigua Nationals, TRRCalso sent a second team to NY City for a second place in one ofthe NYRRC Grand Prix races. This ability to split the team andsuccessfully compete in two events at the same time is whatabsolutely thrills me the most. We not only have several verytalented runners, but our team has a very large group ofdedicated runners, providing us with competitive depth, friendship and spirit.

Anyway, this is a new year, and none of us is gettingany younger. This means there must be many more brand new40 year olds anxious to run with us! So, if you would like to getinvolved in team events, please call me, Scott Abercrombie, at(914) 737-0872. Team competition adds to the rewards andbenefits we realize for ourselves by being runners, not tomention the added incentive to get out and do the training.

Taconic Masters Pick BaggBaldwin Place, NY - The Taconic Road Runners Club

Men's Masters 40-49 Team today selected Jim Bagg as theirDirector of Public Relations, a new position. It becamenecessary to create the post after the team's success, including aUSA Track & Field National Championship, during the 1995season. In this position, Bagg will be responsible for allinteraction with the media (including the award winning TaconicRunning Life), negotiating with race directors for appearancefees, and concluding various sponsorship agreements. "I amdelighted to have been selected over the other 1,000 applicants,"said Bagg. "No doubt my unsolicited submissions to TaconicRunning Life showed the insight and concern I have for thistalented group of runners. I am already in negotiations forsponsorship dollars. With our members having names such asCalidonna, Porcaro, Galfano, and Briglio, I think we are a

natural fit for a pasta company. However, I am pinning myhopes on a toilet paper manufacturer. It seems one of ourrunners is becoming very well known in the community forhaving the runs-on-the-run."

A former competitive runner, Bagg is best known forhaving the term, "bagged it," coined af^er him. This term is usedwhen a runner enters a race but then fails to finish it. Bagg is thecurrent world record holder of this dubious distinction.

In a related development, the TRRC Executive Boardwill vote shortly on whether to raise membership dues to $1,000per individual. This move appears necessary in order to coverBagg's salary. For additional information, please contact theclub at P.O. Box 99, Baldwin Place, NY or call the club on 914-923-4665.

It wasn't easy in the beginning, even though we won our first race in January (Northwind I OK). February brought bitter cold andnasty road conditions for our first defeat, to Withold's Running Club in the Bagel Run I OK.

March would surely bring better results in the Rites of Spring I OK, but to no avail. We suffered our second loss to the stroneW i t h o l d Te a m .

The next month, at th Queens Half-Marathon, we showed our colors and comopetitiveness again, and. . . it's not over until "the fatlady sings."

May - good weather-strong team-what could go wrong with the Central Park 5 Miler?! Withold's Running club, again, that'swhat!! Our third loss was difficult, but we managed to maintain the point lead overall. Taconic suffered another setback in June, finishinga distant 3rd in the Bronx Half-Marathon to Westside Runners Club and VanCortland Track Club, respectively.

July would be 'Tale of the Tape" with the Club Team Championships 5 Miler in Central Park. Taconic shined 1st. Yes! Yes!!Forest Park 2nd, Westchester Track Club 3rd and so on down the line. How sweet the post race picnic was! We were on a roll and theadrenalin carried us through 3 weeks later in August, defeating Millrose AA at the Hispanic Half-Marathon. We would be tough to catchnow, although Central Park Running Club prolonged the inevitable, beating us in the Fred LeBow 5K Cross-Country.

Our most impressive victory was the folowing Norwegian 5K Race, finishing first (1st through 5th and 7th place) in OctoberThe Championship Series geared down with the Pete McArdle I5K Cross Country in November and ending with the Holiday Run

25K in late December.Taconic celebrated its stunning victory at the Mahnattan Center Club Night Dinner/Awards Ceremony February 10 1996
