FROME CANOE CLUB

Coming soon - A New Clubhouse At last a new clubhouse is now a reality to be built in Market Yard. We have secured a £250K via the BCU from Sport England, with a further £49K coming from other smaller awards, club funds and loans from members.

We are now in the final discussions with the architects and builders to start the construction within the next two months. The clubhouse will provide us all with fully equipped changing rooms, showers, toilets, disabled changing facilities, tea point, store and meeting room. We are still short of about £30K, so if you know of any source of extra funding, then please contact Pam most ur-gently.

We are working to ensure that any interruption to our club pro-gramme during the construction is kept to an absolute minimum.

Calendar in Detail River Dart Upper... Sunday 5th March

Organiser: Rich (Instructor) Kris (Organiser) Meet: Market Yard 8am. Experience: 3 Star + & Lots of White Water experience. Cost: £13 The river Dart is divided into 3 main sections. The Upper, the Loop, & the Lower. This trip will be on the Upper, the hardest section of the Dart, with a fearsome reputation and several grade 4-5 rapids.

The start is a couple of miles of near continuous grade 2-3, this acts as the warm up! Beyond this are several grade 4 rapids then Euthanasia, an impressive sloping fall over which the river drops 15-20 feet. More hard rapids follow before Surprise-Surprise, a large Boulder garden. This is the last 'big' rapid however there are still one or two beyond this to catch the unwary and tired out. If you have any doubts about this river it may not be for you yet.

Please book your place on the ‘Trip List’ a.s.a.p.

Langham Farm Winter Sunday Session - 12th March

Organiser: Pip Hallett Meet & Time: Go direct to site, session between 10-12am Cost: £2

All 1 star paddlers and above are welcome to come along. A qualified coach hope-fully will be on site, but no formal training is being arranged. We paddle between 10 and Noon, so its up to you how much paddling you wish to do. Note that you will need your own kayak and gear, as we do have very much club gear on site during the winter months. (Strictly no parking in the lane) This is the last winter session before we start Friday evenings in April. Please remember the ‘Country Code’ when going onto the farm, as the farmer Richard Arney is very good to us. For any other details or queries please contact Pip on 01225 864509

River Frome ‘Treasure Hunt’ 2nd April

Organiser: Rich Carter Meet: Market Yard 9am. Experience: 1 Star Cost: £3 And now for something a little different; what about coming on a trip down the Frome and looking for treasure and other objects as we paddle downstream. Its going to be even more fun than we normally have, as on top of the normal paddling antics, we will be running a special fun event combining a treasure and scavenger hunt along the way. This is a great opportunity as the weather gets warmer for our younger paddlers to join us in a fairly local trip. We plan to paddle the stretch between the ’Creamery’ and ‘Langham Farm’. The paddle is about 5 miles long with a few interesting weirs and a couple of play spots. We will meet as usual outside the clubhouse in Market Yard, where anyone requiring equip-ment/kit can obtain it before leaving. Its very important to get your name down on the ‘Trip List’ that Pam holds well before this event. Remember bring a packed lunch and some warm clothes.

River Exe - 19th March

Organiser: Arthur Belbin Meet: Market Yard 7.45am. (home at about 6.30pm) Experience: 1 Star Cost: £10

This trip is always a favourite especially if the water is at a good level. For those who went to Tiverton at the end of last year it’s a good chance to put those skills you learnt to good use on this trip. For all others this river has several good weirs, grade 2 rapids and several good play spots.

We will paddle from Bolham to Bickleigh, which is a distance of approximately 6 to 7 miles. Remember to wrap up warm and bring plenty of food to eat and remember a hot drink. As always get your name down on the ‘Trip List’ especially if you need kit, as it is not kept at Market Yard while the new clubhouse is built.

Time - 10.00 to 12.00

Organiser - Pip Hallett (01225 864509)

Cost: - £2

Come paddling and have fun searching for those Easter Eggs (on the

water).

Please note that paddlers should bring their own boats and equipment and make their way direct to site between the stated times. (We do not meet at Market Yard for this special session). If you require a boat or kit, then please phone me well in advance and I will try to have it available on site for you.

Open to all our members, families and friends. (Open canoes already on site can be used if you wish)

It’s a great morning of fun for both adults and children, so please come and sup-port this Easter event. Ed.

Trips suitable for those with limited paddling experience What stage are you at?

I've never paddled before. - At this stage trips are not for you, it's best to learn the basics, come down to our Wednesday river sessions or Friday pool session. How about joining a 1 star course?

I've got a one star but have not paddled much apart from that. - Look for trips on the Frome, the Avon, Langham sessions or Symonds Yat

I've got my one star and have experienced a bit of moving water. Look for Surfing, trips, the Wye, the Exe, the Barle or maybe the Usk.

I've got my two star but have not paddled much - Look for trips on the Frome, the Avon, Langham sessions or Symonds Yat

I've got my two star and have paddled on some moving water. - The paddling world is becoming your oyster many trips are now open to you, however don't get over confident you might take a little swim. The Dart loop is now open to you as are other more difficult rivers. Chat to a coach who will advise you.

Calendar in Detail Friday Evening Canoe & Kayaking Sessions

Where: Meet at Langham Farm, Rode. When: Friday evenings 7 till 9pm—Starting 21st April Last meeting 1st September Cost: £2 per evening (payable on site) We will be meeting at Langham Farm on all Friday evenings during the summer. All 1 star paddlers and above are welcome to come along. It’s a chance for you to practise many of those skills recently gained in the training sessions or just to have fun paddling.

If you do not have your own kayak or gear, we do have very limited stocks at Langham for you to use, only a couple of general kayaks are kept on site (please phone me well in ad-vance to arrange loan of any kit). Please note most paddlers bring their own boats and gear.

Unfortunately this year we cannot guarantee that a qualified instructor will always be in attendance on site. Therefore if an instructor is not in attendance at a session, then the club event will be cancelled for that night, and paddlers informed on site. This could result in youngsters under 18 years of age, not being allowed to paddle. We are currently trying to arrange one night per month when a coach will be in attendance to supervise our youth membership. (these dates to be published soon)

Please remember the ‘Country Code’ when going onto the farm, as the farmer Richard Arney is very kind in letting us use the site. For any other details or queries please contact Pip on 01225 864509

There may be a couple of dates that the site will not be available for use by us and on these occasions, please look for cancellation notice at top Farm gate (by the cattle grid) in event of not being able to use the site at short notice. (other users pre-book the site for camping etc. so please do not interfere with their use of the site)

Oh what a taste!

Could this photo show that Neil does not always think that his mum’s cooking is always tasty? I believe that he may have just taken a mouth-ful of prunes…which he says that he really likes!

Ed. Sorry but I couldn’t resist once I had seen this photo.

Wednesday Club Sessions: Time to get training! Start April 19th 7pm – 9pm Market Yard, Frome Cost £2

As from the middle of April, we no longer meet at the pool, but change the venue to the River Frome in the Market Yard in Frome. Yes! It is time to get back on the real water. Stop going round and round in circles in the pool and remember what it is like to paddle in a straight line; feeling fresh air on your face and fresh water on your skin.

Last year was so successful we are going to repeat the format with only a few modifications:

Timings

Polo Training - Hard and fast – a game of polo. In two teams aiming to score as many goals as possible. Slalom Training – learn the skills and techniques required to complete a slalom race: how to get through the gates as fast as possible without touching them! PaddlePower – for 8-11 year olds, an introduction to the sport. Basic strokes are covered with lots of games.

Choices! There are choices to be made! You can choose: To train for the first hour and then get off. Or Train for the first hour and then wind down with some recreational paddling in the sec-ond hour Or omit the training and just get on for the second hour.

You can alternate with the Polo and Slalom each week. But last year people tended to settle into a routine and stay with one group. This way, paddler-skills were developed and people progressed significantly in their chosen discipline.

Frome Trip 1st January - by Pam

First points of the new year (2) go to Stuart. Yes! Nice one Stuart! He was playing a game in the stopper at Woolverton weir and the stopper won. Stuart needed just a little help to get out – though strangely he denies every bit of it. He said later that if he’d been in his little boat he would have got out no problems … Umm.

But that wasn’t the first episode of the day. Kris wins that. You know how Kris is – looks cool, paddles cool, and doesn’t really give a damn? Well he should have! Woolverton weir nearly had him. He didn’t look very calm as he pushed desperately off the weir face, paddles flailing all around. But at least he managed on his own!

This year we didn’t have the 2 hours of dithering at the Clubhouse that we did last year, be-cause when Kris arrived he said ‘It’s got to be Woolverton to Langham. I have got places to be and people to see today.’ Ok Kris! We all wanted a longer paddle! But he had decided and it turned out to be just right.

It was in fact a lovely paddle. The Frome was different today. High enough to let you see into the fields as you paddled along so you didn’t suffer that hemmed in feeling. The water was brown, a nice warm chocolate brown, there was very little litter about and there was no smell of rotting vegetation that we’ve had in the past. The flow was good so we didn’t have to work hard, and the blocked bridge that Kris scared us all with didn’t materialise on the stretch we did.

The first weir was ‘half height’ because of the high water. Lots walked round it because they wanted to stay dry. Howie was one of those walking, because he had forgotten his spray deck, but I know that he is losing his bottle and he deliberately forgot the spray deck so that he would have a ‘perfect excuse’. And on under the packhorse bridge. We always have to keep over to the left just below this, but today we went where we liked – there was water every-where. And we didn’t have to walk and drag boats once! The weir at Rode was interesting. Only a small drop but big waves below. Lots of playing here but no points. And then we were at Langham Farm. The bridge was flowing fast today. Sam, Holly and Vicky all took the safe route over the weir to start with and then went back to take the bridge, helped very ably by Stuart whom I made get back into his boat to take control, as I thought he was probably the most responsible, caring instructor we had that day and I could trust him not to let any harm come to them. It worked!

And we did remember Steve Allen today. Pip spoke about him at the beginning of the paddle, and the plan to plant a tree at Langham Farm (with Rich Arney’s permission) in Steve’s memory. What a lovely thing to do, to remember a very special paddler.

Langham Farm Slalom June 3rd/4th

What our club is doing by way of Slalom This is advance notice of slalom activities. Below is a list of early season events that the club is intending to dip into. Training starts at Market Yard after Easter so you will have plenty of opportunity to practice be-forehand.

River Loddon, Reading May 28/29. Coaching, Practice and Teams on Sunday. Divisions 3 and 4 Individual Monday. The Team event involves teams of 3 racing together.

Langham Farm June 3/4. Divisions 3 and 4. This is a Double event where there are sep-arate races Saturday and Sunday.

North Walls, Winchester June 10/11. Division 4 Double event.

Cardington, Bedford June 24/25. Divisions 2, 3 and 4 Double event.

Shepperton, Middlesex July 1/2. Divisions 3 and 4 Double event. This event looks like it will clash with the Biblins Weekend.

Ironbridge, Shropshire July 8/9. Divisions 2 and 3 Double event. Slalom is intended to test river-running skills in a safe and friendly environment. The object is to negotiate a series of gates on moving water. The winner of the event is the one who has negotiated the course in the fastest time, with the fewest penalties. There are penalties for hitting and missing gates. Entry level to slalom is Division 4 and these slaloms are generally held on calm water and the courses will be simple. In all but the top division any boat may be used. You don't need a slalom boat to take part in slalom, but the club has a small number if you wish to try one. For further details on the training sessions, entry to the events, or just slalom in general, con-tact John Kent on 01225 765168 or e-mail him at [email protected]. There is also a website you can look at which will tell you more about slalom www.canoeslalom.co.uk.

AGM, 15thFebruary 2006 A disappointing turn out by members, which I like to think means that everyone is happy with the club and what we are doing! Otherwise they would have come to let us know!

Arthur gave an overview of 2005. We heard from Pip about the most recent developments in the Replacement Clubhouse Project. John gave us the good news that the club has been able save an amazing £6½K approx, in the last year which can all be diverted to the building project. Pam told of how well we had achieved our aspirations from last year. More good news in-cluding the success of Wednesday sessions; the progress towards Clubmark/Top Communi-ty Club representing recognition of the good club we are; the successes of PaddlePower and more. And summing up, our President, Graham thanked everyone who had contributed and worked for the club over the last twelve months.

The new committee: The officers remain unchanged with Arthur, as chairman, Kris as vice-chair, John as treasur-er and Pam as secretary. The remaining members are Jackie Powell, Helen Samuel, Steve Ellis, Rich Carter and Pip Hallett. Helen and Steve are new to the committee this year and we are very glad to have you on board.

This leaves us space to co-opt members, later, as we find that we need various specialisms or expertise in view of the imminent building project.

If you would like to have copies of the audited accounts, the treasurer’s report or the secre-tary’s report, please ask Pam to send them to you.

New Membership Charges The AGM, on 15th February 2006, voted for a 5% rise in membership charges to be brought in as from now:

Youth £14 Adult £23 Family £36 Affiliated £36

We remain committed to keeping charges as reasonable as possible and we feel that the membership subscription represents very good value for money. The committee looked at other club prices and were astounded to find out that one flat-water-club not too far from here charges £91 for the annual subscription. Wow!a

Coaching + Other Information

Would you like to do this?

How would you like to be this newsletters assistant editor and help bring

in the news, gossip and reports. We are looking for someone who can

bring new vitality to our clubs newsletter and ensure that our member-

ship receive a newsletter that meets their needs. Sorry there is no pay,

but its fun and rewarding. Remember there are only 6 editions a year, so

not too much work and you don’t have to be on the committee if you do

not want to.

If you are interested, then please speak to Pip and he will only be only too pleased to hear

from you.

Coaching

If you are thinking of getting involved in helping the club with coaching or want to progress your coaching level, then please speak with Rich, who will only be to0 pleased to explain the best way forward to help you achieve what you want from your coaching.

The club does help with coaches fees, but we ask for your help in return by giving a few coaching hours to be given back at sessions.

New years’ resolutions?

Did you make yours (and broken them)? How about making one now to do with access?

Such as…….

Writing to your MP and keeping them updated on the access issue.

Informing your MP that if you had the access to ‘x’ river you would have gone and spent ‘x’ £s there, thus not only helping your fitness but the local economy.

Writing an article for your local news paper about the access situation and giv-ing examples of where locally you can not go.

Promoting canoeing by running a ‘come and try canoeing session’ and get local dignitaries there… out in a canoe. Don’t forget to take pictures.

Taking your local youth/scout/guide group out and then tell the papers how well it went and how much enjoyment was had by all and how this could be replicated all over England and Wales if there was more access.

Contact [email protected] if you have information for us and/or need help and advice when planning/running an event.

Bits & Pieces Letter via the Editor…….. Dear FCC, Many of you may not remember my name, or even my face, but believe it or not I have been with the club for 10 years, and now I have committed the terrible sin of becoming an armchair paddler. When I was on the wa-ter you might have remembered seeing me as a blur of large purple in the shape of a Canadian canoe that drifted past you (or bumped into you). If so, I have some great news to share from us, two friends of the club. Jo (also a little seen club member) and myself (Andy H) are engaged to be married. On a recent

trip to India I asked Jo to marry me, and lucky for me she said yes. On an FCC weekend in back in 2004, at Biblins I met Jo for the first time and the rest as they say, is history and so a big thanks to FCC for bringing us two paddlers together, we are very happy. Andy and Jo

‘Matchmaking Service’ at low cost (the Ed. Is trying to raise funds)

After a run of members all preparing to get hitched, how about trying the FCC dating service.

If you want to find a partner, then Frome Canoe Club offers all paddlers who might be looking for someone special a dating service.

For the Wednesday evening dating service it only costs £2, with local dating at just £3. To date on the Exe, it will cost £10 and for all other river dating the cost will be £13. What value! Give it a try…..you never know!

More Marriages

Our very best wishes go to Neil and Gemma who are getting married on the 11th August at Studley Castle, Warwickshire, with a weeks honeymoon in the grand city of Rome.

More congratulations from the the club, go to Tom and Linz who are getting mar-ried at the Widbrook Grange during this July.

Please send some photos that can be published in the ‘August’ newsletter.

Remember if you want to go on a paddling trip and want to know more, all you have

to do is phone up the organiser and ask. He or she will be happy to tell you the skills/

standard required and all arrangements for the trip. Remember that you can borrow any

club kit that you need, including a wetsuit if you're lucky: we do have a few which have been

donated to the club and which may just fit you!

When out paddling, remember: Thermal Vest/tee shirt! 100% Polyester thermals keep

you warm. WET Suit! Many layers of thinner Polyester are better than one thick one. Ca-

noeing CAGS (Cagoule) to keep the wind and water off, and luckily the club has just bought

some new good quality semi-dry ones.

What else? Packed lunch (high energy food) and a hot drink. A warm dry change of

clothes for afterwards. Anything else? Well we always meet at the clubhouse before we

leave, and that is the time to sort out what you need in the way of club kit, pack it into the

cars along with your own kit, and then off to paddle.

Welcome to new members

A very warm welcome to our two newest members, Harriet Gray and Kinga Drows

who recently joined at a pool night. We wish you many happy hours paddling.
