Surfing Day Out - Kris Buxton-Dean Date: 16th July

Cost: £13

Meet: Market Yard 8am.

Level: 1 Star

The summer is nearly here, so the rivers are closing, but

the beach is now calling, can you hear it? I can. The surf can

be large at this time of year and the sea is still cold, but

given a day of lovely sunshine and there is nothing better.

We'll be going to North Devon, probably Saunton or Croyde, but the exact beach we end up

on will be dependant upon the surf.

You will need to have your 1 star to paddle on this trip. (If the surf is large we will have to

raise the standard required).

Plenty of food and drink is essential, along with some warm clothes as the wind along the

beach can be a bit strong at times.

Only one more ‘Slalom Event’ this year

This is advance notice of our last slalom activitiy this season.

Ironbridge, Shropshire July 8/9. Divisions 2 and 3 Double event.

Slalom is intended to test river-running skills in a safe and friendly environ-

ment. The object is to negotiate a series of gates on moving water. The winner of the event

is the one who has negotiated the course in the fastest time, with the fewest penal-

ties. There are penalties for hitting and missing gates. Entry level to this slalom is Division 3. You don't need a slalom boat to take part in slalom,

but the club has a small number if you wish to try one. For further details on the training sessions and entry to this event, or just slalom in general,

contact John Kent on 01225 765168 or e-mail him at [email protected]. There is

also a website you can look at which will tell you more about slalom www.canoeslalom.co.uk.

from the safety of the pool.

You can collect any equipment that you need when we meet at Market Yard. So just bring

your change of clothes, plenty of food and drink.

If you wish to join us for a really fun day out where we will play some silly games and enjoy

Surfing Weekend 18th - 20th August It’s Summer so it’s time for a holiday. How does the idea of a weekend in

Cornwall surfing sound to you? Interested, then this could be the trip for you. What's the plan? We will be staying just outside of Wadebridge in easy striking

distance of several of Cornwall's best beaches. We aim travel down on the

Friday matching peoples departure time with drivers.

Costs; fuel will be divided per car and settled by the passengers with the drivers - based on

an assumption of 3 people per car expect this to be about £15 - £20 each Camping is £7 per

person per night. Food is bring your own. In the past we have arrange a group BBQ for the

Saturday night.

You will need to be 1 Star standard or above (depending of wave conditions this may need to

be raised). For this surfing weekend unfortunately we are unable to accept unaccompanied

children. If you're a youngster and wish to come just drag your parents along that’s fine. Par-

ents don't have to paddle, just so long as they can look after you on the beach and at the

campsite. This is a great trip for families as there is lots to do in the area.

Any questions about the weekend, please call me on 07889 732594.

you that this event can be a totally dry one if you want to join us but do not want to get in a

boat! Please come for the friendly company and the good food.

Don’t forget to bring along as many boats as possible for everyone to try out, its really fun to

have a paddle in something different…..did someone tell me that they had a Coracle? Tickets must be purchased in advance from Pam for this most special day of fun and food at

‘Moving Water Training’ demystified (explained)

If you have just passed your One Star and want to progress your paddling ability a bit further,

then look out for the two moving water trainings that we offer.

‘Moving water’ really means rivers with fast flowing water and rapids.

We teach you how to paddle on this sort of water, how to break out of the flow, how to

surf the waves and play in the rapids and very important we help you to learn how to ‘read’

the water. Look out for the information about these courses and keep these weekends free

in your diary:

7/8th October and 4th /5th November

Both weekends away are fully catered, and youth members can leave parents behind, at

home!

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE COACH-ING OF CANOEING

There are five levels of coaching qualifica-

tion for the teaching of canoeing, the first

four of which are related to competence to be in charge of canoeing

groups on the type of water involved; or

in the case of the Placid Water progression, a wider range of expe-

rience and use of increasingly specialist

craft:

Level 1 Coach Very Sheltered Water Level 2 Coach Trainee Very Sheltered

Water

Level 2 Coach Sheltered Water Level 3 Coach Trainee Sheltered Wa-

ter

Level 3 Coach Moderate Water

Level 4 Coach Advanced Water Level 5 Coach A qualification to indicate

an extensive all-round level of knowledge

and ability, able to train others for ad-

vanced qualifications. Please see the chart opposite which shows

the qualifications required for each level of

coaching.

Polo Training - Hard and fast – a game of polo. In two teams aiming to score as many

goals as possible. Slalom Training – learn the skills and techniques required to complete a slalom race: how

to get through the gates as fast as possible without touching them! PaddlePower – for 8-11 year olds, an introduction to the sport. Basic strokes are covered

with lots of games.

Choices! There are choices to be made!

You can choose:

To train for the first hour and then get off. Or Train for the first hour and then wind down with some recreational paddling in the sec-

ond hour

Or omit the training and just get on for the second hour. You can alternate with the Polo and Slalom each week. But last year people tended to settle

into a routine and stay with one group. This way, paddler-skills were developed and people

progressed significantly in their chosen discipline.

Reports Tryweryn - A weekend of superb paddling

It’s the spring, the rivers are closed, so where do we go for some fun paddling in the UK?

Well you have 3 choices, Scotland (rather a long way), Surfing (a possibility), Tryweryn and a

dam released river. (best choice). Having paddled the river before, we knew what to expect,

fun and entertainment all the way down with a mix of boulder filled rapids and drops.

Saturday morning whilst waiting for the remainder of the group to turn up Arthur, Mark and

myself played on the top (harder) section of the river, bouncing from eddy to eddy via lots of

waves as we made our way down to the centre. The afternoon consisted of again running the

top section with James, Liz, Nick and Stuart joining us. No dramas were had and no points picked up (sorry Ed) after completing the top section Arthur, Liz, Mark and myself continued

to Bala whilst the others ran the top section again.

What to do in the evening, ah easy choice there! Of to the pub, for a few pints and some

food, along with lots of conversation. The Sunday paddle led to points being gained. On the

first run down the top section, Liz swam, then moments later having just jumped back into

her boat it decided to part company with her again, obviously it must have felt the river was

too hard for it.

A second and third run was completed by most of us, before the drive home. Shortly after

arriving back, I received a phone call from a rather concerned Arthur. Had I lost a bag? No I

had all my kit, apparently so had everyone else. So why the call, Mark when asked to collect

his and Arthur's stuff from the bunk house had just grabbed every bag he could find including

a bag belonging to someone from Leeds. Oh well it all got sorted out.

Great News - Builders move onto site

Yes if you have not been to Market Yard recently, you will have not seen that our builders

have moved onto site to start the new clubhouse. The building work is expected to take up

until the end of the year to complete, along with a few jobs to be done inside once the club-

house is completed.

We are still looking for extra funding as the cost for the water supply at approximately £10K

has still to be found, along with additional finance to buy some internal fittings, including

changing room lockers and benches, also a few items such as chairs, tables and burgular alarm

etc. If you know where we can approach for more funding then please let Pam or any com-

mittee member know so we can make an application asap.

Surfing was a day of turn ups - 7th May

Howie C turned up with his sit on top - Fool an instant 3 points for falling to bring a com-

plete boat (these points were later revoked due to the shear number of swims he had).

The surf and sunshine both turned up as booked, each wave appeared to have borough a

friend and by joining together become at least twice the size of those forecast.

Dave turned up with his nice new surf boat and proceeded to wobble a lot.

Everyone who came on the trip turned over at least once. Dougie turned turtle almost as

soon as his boat touched the water. Alun’s boat decided to turn him out (Alun what had you

been doing to the poor thing).

Points turned up by the bucket load. Howie C 15 (Howie swam lots and lots. Probably he should have been awarded more points

but we believe that he was really just trying to find a mermaid.) Dougie 5, Alun 5, Dave 4,

Mark 3, Howie G 3, Carl 3 and Kris 2.

A big thanks for the use of P.A.

Thanks to the Thomas family who came forward and was able to donate a desperately need-

ed PA system for this years slalom. Well done Archie for twisting your dad’s arm. The sys-

tem worked just fine at the slalom and will may most useful at some of our other events.

Loddon Slalom Event 28/29th May

On May 28th we travelled to Reading to a Division 3 and 4 slalom on the River Lod-

don. Earlier in the week there had been a risk of the event being cancelled because of too

much water but by the weekend the level had dropped and it turned out to be a nice gentle

current. On the first day (Sunday) there was a Team event where teams of 3 tackled the

course together. We made up two Div 4 teams with William Passfield, Vicky Bennett and

Pam Dixon coming second and a junior team of Isabelle and James Bennett, joined by Jake

Roberts from Reading, coming fourth. On the Monday were the individual runs. In Div 4 K1W, Pam came second with two clear

runs, Vicky 4th and Isabelle 5th. In Div 4 K1M William came 6th and James 22nd. William

missed promotion by one place. Pam was also joined by Rich in Div 4 C2. With a steady

but clear first run and a much faster second run with only 4 penalties, they came first. Un-

fortunately they were the only entrants.

Langham Farm Slalom—3/4th June Another brilliant weekend of paddling. The sun shone on both days and the mud finally

disappeared. This was the first event held with the raised water level but because of the

rain the week before, the flow was about right on the Saturday, if a little slow on the Sun-

day. A total of 26 club members took part in Divisions 4 and 3 over the two days and we also

had entries in the Official's event. On the Saturday Vicky Bennett and Jake Turton won their respective classes and along with

William Passfield and James Ellis gained promotion from Division 4 to 3. On the Sunday Carl Gilder, Andy Turton, Charlotte Mallon and Helen Samuels found them-selves promoted. Well done to all those who took part and thank you to all those who

helped.

The two reports above landed on the editors desk, from John Kent the

Slalom Team Leader. If you have any questions about taking part in slalom

events or would just like to learn a little more about slalom then please

chat with John.

What has been happening at Wednesday Sessions

These have been busy this year. Lots of activity and lots of training.

The slalom course was revamped earlier in the year and now includes 10 properly numbered

gates to challenge the slalomists. John, who is our official slalom coach now, does a variety of

activities including time trials and discrete coaching of slalom strokes.

Kris and Dougie run fast and furious sessions of canoe polo. The new goals have made a

difference to the number of goals scored!

Paddlepower has been revamped by Yousaf, relatively new to the club. He is the instructor

who gets the group paddling on dry land and in thin air. I need to speak to him about this – I

thought we got on the water to paddle. Only joking Yousaf.

And of course we continue with the recreational session from 8-9pm or more sensibly called

the swim-in-the-river session judging from last week. Incidentally that week we had 49 pad-

dlers on the water – or so my records said. Got to be good.

So far we have been able to use the changing rooms in the old ‘club house’ but can I remind

you that soon we will not be able to. Changing will therefore be a slightly more awkward

affair either in your car or in the car park. We are of course sorry about this but it means

that the new clubhouse is on its way.

Finally, if you know anyone who is interested in starting to canoe, ask them to come at 7 pm

and we will take them on the water for a beginners’ session at 7.30. It’s easy. They will need

to bring £5 for an adult, or £4 youth with an adult to sign the form.

Reports + Photo Competition

We are running a club photo competition. To enter all you need

to do is submit a photo of some aspect of kayaking or canoeing

taken at any club event (river trips, coaching session, Wednesday

and Friday sessions or even on dry land).

There will be 3 categories:

8-13 years, 14-18 years and Adults.

Please send your photos either digitally via email, on disc or in hard copy to the Editor, in-

clude your name and category to be enter into. (Pip, address/email on page 2)

Closing Date will be Friday 18th August 2006 Prizes are suitable for each of the three age groups, plus get your photo published in the

newsletter.

Open Boat River Wye trip becomes the River Avon The problem with open boats is their size – big, heavy and difficult to get four on one car

wouldn’t you say? With this in mind and after some discussion we decided not to head for

the River Wye on 21st May. Actually it wasn’t anything to do with the size of the boats! – It

was a responsible decision we made in view of the violent weather forecast. So we stayed

close to home and enjoyed the local scenery. It was a good decision. We got on at Bradford on Avon and did a bit of a circuit involving a

stretch on the river, a stretch on the canal and back again on the river. To end up back at

the get-on was a real bonus – no shuttle, no clothes in the wrong place and hanging about.

Easy! This was the day that the Open boaters on the One and Two Star course were to do a

journey and be tested. We were joined by a few kayakers and we set off together down

the River Avon towards the weir. The water was high today and the normal portage down

the weir was impossible. We scouted the weir back and forwards but no amount of look-

ing was going to change anything! It was to be a climb down the structure on River right,

where the rope already hanging there, did come in handy. Exciting? Scary? Different any-

way! The boats were lowered separately and gently over the weir, some filling with water

other being cooperative and staying dry. Boats and paddlers were reunited after a lot of

huffing and puffing. The kayakers however had none of this! They just plopped over the

weir. The weather wasn’t brilliant and some of us got cold, some left packed lunches back at the

cars and all of us got wet. Lunch was a hurried affair followed by a short walk to the canal

and a lovely paddle back to the cars. The stretch on the canal was different – there are

other water users to watch and interesting boats to compare. And there was the short

paddle across the stunning viaduct and past a lovely pub, which we have promised to re-

turn to another day.

It was good to see Brian and Graham who joined us just as we got the first weir. Others (not on the course) were Maddey and Justin Thomson, William, James and Steve

Ellis, Pam, Adrian, Rich, Pip and Kris.

New members

We welcome Robyn, Liz and Simon Wood, Megan, Kyle and Dylan Brown, Isabel Monks,

Ray Walker, Jack Overhill, Shaun Borley, Ali Carne, Dave Doughty, Rose Teeranggoon, Jack

Peters and Samantha Matthews who returns after a long gap! We hope that your paddling

experience with the club is a good one and that you have much fun. We look forward to

seeing you on some of the river trips in the future.

River Loddon Slalom—28th & 29th May (by Izzy Bennett) My very first Slalom event at the River Loddon was great fun. Saturday was practice and then

the team events. We got there early and waited till John, William P and the boats arrived.

Pam and Rich arrived shortly after; they had gone the wrong way. When we were all sorted,

John took William, Vicky, James and me onto the river to practise. We all had really good team runs on Saturday, James and I plus Jake (on loan from Reading

C.C) went first, only missing two gates. I went through one the wrong way but went back

and did it correctly. Next William, Vicky and Pam had their turn doing excellently, though

they made it sound as if they were rubbish. So we all did really well, helped along by the

lovely sunny weather. Sunday didn’t bring as good weather, it started to hail and Vicky, William and James had to

hide in their boats under a bridge! Soon it was time to get the boys on the river for their first individual runs. They both did

really well. Then, shortly after Pam, Vicky and I got on for our runs. We all also did really

well. After lunch we had our second runs. Pam came second and got promoted, Vicky came

fourth and I came fifth. James was really pleased not to have come last as he only learned to

paddle 3 weeks ago! William came first in the J16 category. Pam and Rich managed to come 1st , 2nd and

3rd in the C2 - but they were the only en-

tries...... The River Loddon was a great weekend, and

we are definitely going again next time .

Ed. Thanks Izzy for a lovely report of your first slalom event and we

are all very pleased that you enjoyed it so much. Congratulations go

to William who came 1st in the under 16 years category and well

done to all the team.. Please note that anyone who wants to take part in slalom, just chat

with John Kent.

‘Paddlepower 2006’

Wednesday evenings over the summer from 6-7 pm, Market Yard, Frome

Perhaps the most enjoyable way to get to grips with the kayaking basics for keen young

children.

All about fun! ‘Paddlepower’ involves games and challenges that are both exciting and help

develop skills along the way.

Develop confidence on and in the water. Confident paddling will support you when it is

time to work towards the 1-star award and beyond.

Don’t forget your book! Bring your book each week and you can earn a ‘Green spot’.

Three green spots mean that you can choose a game or a challenge for the rest of the group

to do. Think of your own games and challenge us all.

Learn new skills every week that will help you gain stickers that reward your progress.

Expect a challenge in every session. Choose a game or suggest activities for

Now come on Liz, if we don’t show the others on the course that we know what to do, then

Neil will take our coaching awards away! No chance of that Che, as he keeps standing up and

using a long pole not a paddle.

behind the wall down at Langham Farm. Hot, hard work but with these two one

hand the job was speedily completed.

Another thank you Thank you to Alun Jones who spent a whole Saturday cutting and fixing racking into the new

trailer at Market Yard. Well done Alun a great job done.

Was this the best ever turn out for a competition in the his-

tory of FCC?

Our Canoe Slalom held over the weekend of 3rd/4th June saw a massive entry from FCC

members. I challenge any of our older members to remember a time in the history of the

club when we have had such a stupendous turn out.

We had entries in all races from Division 4 and 3 to the Judges. Here are the names of all our competitors. Some entered more than one race. Some did so

well that they got promoted over the weekend from Div 4 to Div 3. Keep up the good

work.

Congratulations need to be passed to

Juniors James Bennett, William and James Ellis, Ben Miles, Emily and Amy Turton, Maddey and Ali-

son Thomson, Charlie and Jamie Creese, Charlotte Mallon, Vicky Bennett, Jake Turton,

Chris Paton, William Passfield and Sam Thomson,

son.

Judges

Nick Kent, Shane Creese, Danyel Creese, Helen Weedon and John Kent.

I count that 27 competitors! A full list can be obtained the web: BCU Canoe Slalom. Or ask

Points up to Sunday 18th June

For new members going on a trip:

Remember if you want to go on a paddling trip and want to know more, all you have

to do is phone up the organiser and ask. Remember that you can borrow any club kit that

you need, including a wetsuit if you're lucky: we do have a few which have been donated to

the club and which may just fit you!

When out paddling, remember: Thermal Vest/tee shirt! 100% Polyester thermals keep

you warm. WET Suit! Many layers of thinner Polyester are better than one thick one. Ca-

noeing CAGS (Cagoule) to keep the wind and water off, and luckily the club has just bought

some new good quality semi-dry ones.

What else? Packed lunch (high energy food) and a hot drink. A warm dry change of

clothes for afterwards. Anything else? Well we always meet at the clubhouse before we

leave, and that is the time to sort out what you need in the way of club kit, pack it into the

cars along with your own kit, and then off to paddle.
