One of the great benefits of living in Redmond is the wealth of classes and other recreation opportunities offered by the City’s Parks and Recreation department. This fall is no exception.

New this year is an easy way to commit to fitness – the Redmond Fit Pass. This punch card allows you to drop into a variety of different classes offered at every fitness level and style. Are you looking for something different? Get your buddies together for some old fashion fun and join the new adult Dodge Ball League! We also continue to offer many types of creative and sports oriented classes from drama, art and dance to horsemanship, fencing and martial arts.

To create a lasting work of art, take a class at the Redmond Clay Studio. Since the studio began three years ago, students have produced many beautiful objects, sculpture and dinnerware. The Third Annual Redmond Clay Studio Holiday Art Show and Sale will be held the weekend of December 9 through 11. This is a perfect time to purchase a unique gift for you or family and friends.

Another perfect place to shop for gifts and support local craftspeople is at the annual Holiday Craft Bazaar at the Senior Center on December 3. Also in December is the annual Candlelight Dinner Dance, a very popular event to help kick off the holiday season.

Speaking of holiday season, please make sure you put Redmond Lights on your calendar for Saturday, December 3. This winter festival is uniquely Redmond’s; celebrating our cultural diversity and our beautiful river landscape.

I hope you find inspiration to keep active and fit this fall and winter. In this guide, we have something for every age and taste. See you around town.

CloggingClogging is a great form of aerobic exer-cise, with many health benefits. Including improved coordination and flexibility, lower blood pressure and stress relief, increased endurance, strength and lung capacity, and weight loss. Clogging is a percussive dance that keeps time with the downbeat of the music, whereas most other forms of dance keep time with the upbeat. Clogging often imitates the rhythm of the music, although it more often accents and complements the rhythms. Cloggers dance to many different styles of music including Country-Western, Pop, Rock, and of course, Bluegrass. Wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes with flexible soles - athletic shoes are acceptable, leather sole shoes are recom-mended, tap shoes are optional.

Fencing IntermediateThis intermediate-level class is intended for children 8-13 who have completed the beginning program, or who have been recommended by a coach. This program is designed to prepare young fencers for the demands of competition through a series of tactical exercises, organized bouting, and short lessons to promote technical profi-ciency and physical development. More emphasis will be placed on each athlete fencing a particular weapon, as opposed to the a la carte approach of the youth pro-gram. The skills necessary to complete this program are more specific and detailed than those in the previous program, thus class completion, typically, takes approximately a year.

Team Assignments (Grades 1-6)Teams are assigned by The Parks & Recreation Department. Teams in this league will be as-signed according to each child’s grade level, and the school they attend. We try to keep all chil-dren at their home school but there is always the possibility that they may play for a neighboring school if there are not enough, or too many kids registered from their home school for one team. If there are enough kids from your child’s grade and school to form more than one team, we will split the players up into teams randomly. However, players may request to be on a team with one “buddy,” if they follow these guidelines:

1. You and your buddy must be in the same grade (boys), or same division (girls)2. Your buddy must also select you as a buddy.

If more than one buddy is selected, or if buddies do not match, the selection is invalid.Note: Volunteer coaches who would like to coach together must buddy their children together using this system or there will be no guarantee that they will coach together or that their children will be on the same team. Please do not bring in more than one buddy or a stack of registration forms asking us to put them all on one team. We cannot do this!

Team Assignments (Grades 7-8)Teams are assigned by The Parks & Recreation Department. We will try to assign teams according to the school each player attends. If more than one team from a school then there will be a draft. There are no “buddy requests,” but we will keep same gender siblings together upon request.

Volunteer Coaches Needed! To keep this program running we must find great coaches willing to volunteer their time for kids. The Parks and Recreation Department is now recruiting volunteer coaches and will be recruiting until we fill all coaching positions. If you are interested in coaching or assisting with this year’s youth basketball program, please call 425-556-2300 ext 3 or visit www.teamsideline.com/redmondsports to obtain a coaches application. Applications may be turned in at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80th St, Redmond. They can also be faxed to the recreation office at 425-556-2363 or sent to Jeff Hagen, League Coordinator at [email protected].

Basketball Officials Needed! The Redmond Parks and Recreation Department is hiring officials for the Youth Basketball League. (The pay ranges from $9 - $12 per hour) We will have a training clinic that will be mandatory for all officials. Applicants must attend all training sessions in order to be considered for hire. Please call 425-556-2300 ext. 3 for more details, or you may obtain an application under the employment section of our website, www.redmond.gov.

Season TimelinePractices will begin the week of November 14, 2011. Assigned Coaches will call team members after the coaches meeting. Coaches will inform you of your scheduled practice time and location once they receive team rosters and practice schedules. Teams will be assigned a one-hour practice once (possibly twice) per week. Games will be scheduled for Saturdays beginning December 3, 2011. The season will run approximately through February 18th or February 25th, 2012 (final dates will be on the game schedule). There will be no games on December 24th or December 31st.

Resident Registration PriorityThe City of Redmond has established a policy giving registration priority to residents living or working within the Redmond City limits. The city limits weave along NE 116 to NE 124 St on the north, and approximately 186 Ave NE on the East. The western boundary weaves along 132 Ave NE until Bridle Crest Trail (NE 60th), then goes east to 148 Ave NE. The southern boundary varies. All 98053 zip codes are outside the city limits, as well as some 98052 zip codes. See page 48 for registration instructions and timelines.

Age RequirementsTo ensure a successful program experience for your child, program age requirements are established by the instructors and the recreation program coordinators. Appro-priate age requirements are determined for each program based on developmental guidelines and staff experience working with the children in each of the program areas. By staying firm on these age requirements, the integrity of the program is maintained for the children and families who are the correct age.

Disability AssistanceIf you have a disability and need an accommodation to fully participate in a class, please take the following steps:

1. Register for any and all classes in which you want to participate. You must meet all general class requirements to register for a class such as age, gender, and pre-requisites.

2. After registering, contact Inclusion Services as soon as possible to discuss your accommodation needs. At least two weeks notice for all accommodations is requested so that the City of Redmond may successfully meet your needs.

Inclusion Services Office: 425-556-2330 or [email protected].

Holiday ClosuresThe Parks and Recreation office will be closed September 5, November 24-25 and December 23-26. Regular office hours are 8am-8pm, Monday through Friday.

Inclement Weather PolicyThe safety of program participants is of prime consideration when determining if programs should be canceled due to inclement weather. Programs meeting in school facilities will automatically be canceled if the schools are closed. Gener-ally programs offered in city facilities will also be canceled if the schools close. Weekend programs will be canceled at the discretion of the Recreation Division Manager or designee, if unsafe conditions exist. Cancellation information will be available on the department’s main line at 425-556-2300, and radio stations will be notified.

Photographs/VideographyPhotos/videos taken during programs may be used for promotional purposes. If you do not want your photos or videos published, please check the appropriate box on the Medical Information form that you bring to the first class.
