22011 Semen & Embryo Directory

We are excited to bring you the second issue of Herefords – The Next Generation, the Canadian Hereford Association’s Semen and Embryo directory! This directory has been mailed to the CHA membership as well as to our national and international subscribers. Bundles of ten have also been mailed to world Hereford member associations, to continue to increase the visibility of this directory and the genetics offered by Canadian Hereford breeders. It will also be distributed at Hereford events throughout the year.Comments have been extremely positive about the 2010 sire directory. The greatest advantage with this venture continues to be that breeders’ direct contact information is included in their ads, so interested buyers can either contact them or their respective designated agents directly, for the semen or embryos offered for sale. In most cases, therefore, 100 per cent of sales go directly to the breeder. Those selling semen also have their customer’s information and can call this year to see how the calves look from the semen or embryos sold in 2010.

We invite readers and recipients of this directory to contact the advertisers listed if the genetics and breeding programs advertised are of interest. Our advertising breeders would be happy to discuss their programs with you and help you find the proper fit for your program. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested in advertising in the 2012 directory. We also welcome comments and suggestions for consideration relating to future issues of this directory. We hope you find real value within the second annual pages of the 2011 Herefords – The Next Generation.

Sincerely,Brad DubeauDirector of CommunicationsCanadian Hereford AssociationPhone: 1.888.836.7242 Fax: 1.888.824.2329Email: [email protected]

8052 is the most exciting Hereford bull to come on the market in some time. It is rare to find a Hereford bull to carry the mass and depth of body in such a clean and functionally sound package along with his extended and freaky front end. These attributes will give 8052 the ability to sire rugged deep bodied rancher bulls along with deep bodied, level hipped females with attractive and alert front ends. Along with his balanced EPDs, 8052 also provides fresh new genetics for both horned and polled breeders alike.

Admired by all who have seen him, 174S is one of the most complete bulls you will find. His flawless structure, muscling, thickness, length & depth of quarter combined with maternal strength and perfect feet make him a truly outstanding individual. It is rare to find a bull exhibiting 174S’ carcass traits with a pedigree full of exceptional cows that have an abundance of milk. Although 174S’s own birth is a bit higher then we would prefer, out of 100 plus calves in two seasons there has only been one easy assist. The remainder have all been unassisted.174S has the ability to not only maintain but to improve condition while naturally breeding 70 plus females on rugged pasture each of the last two years. This attests to his excellent feed conversion & fleshing ability, influential for anyone’s bottom line.174S exemplifies all the traits that make Herefords great and advances the ones we are all trying to improve.

The best 157K son we raised and probably the most exciting bull we own. His sire 157K needs no introduction and his dam LBH 20S is one of our best young females in the herd, she raised the high indexing Heifer Calf in the herd as a first calf heifer. Due to stifle injury last spring she is beyond raising any more calves and is in our embryo program. We believe in

and used 40W heavy and expect over 80 calves this spring out of him, look at his EPDs, what a balanced set. Thanks to XTC Herefords, Stromsmoe Herefords, Dave Braden and Marie Anne & Les Strojan for purchasing semen on 40W.

A great 81N son (YV STAR STRUCK 915W). This summer we put Star Struck out with 40 of our best females. At 18 months of age he weighed 2,110 lbs. Check out his pedigree with both his grandma and great grandma being embryo transfer females. Also his paternal grandma is a cow that we have flushed for years (SNS 107H). She has raised a list of herd sires and she is still in production at 13 years of age. Coleman won Reserve Champion Female with her natural daughter (YV 46R MAJOR MOMMA 950W) at the Junior Hereford Synergy show at Olds in July, 2010. Star Struck’s mother (282P) is one of our best producing cows with lots of performance and a beautiful udder. Ask anyone who has seen her. This pedigree is stacked and he is thick and stout.

Stop by for a look...the coffee’s on.

Stacking outstanding genetics is what 107R is about. The only bull I know that has a better EPD profile than 157K. Birth at breed average and top of the breed for everything else. He’s been used heavily on heifers with good results. He adds pounds to every mating. His first group of females have calved and they are awesome! What a wonderful EPD graph!

This year Kilo was Grand Champion Hereford Bull (Polled and Horned) at Canada’s Western National Show Farm Fair. He also won Reserve Junior Champion at Agribition. He is a full brother to our Cash bull. We flushed his dam MJT 14H Charisma 228P (Rosie) and are very excited with all of the flushmates.

MJT MISS 14H CHARISMA 228P Rosie, his dam has been bred to several different bulls and her calves are always outstanding. Shown here with her first calf, Cash 228S. She is perfectly marked, has full eye pigment, a nicely attached udder and as good of foot as you will find on a bovine.

2010 Farmfair National Western

Champion Bull

MJT CENTuRY 264P The sire MJT Century 264P (Total) was our top selling bull 3 years before Cash and at the time was truly ahead of his time in Canada. He boasted a moderate frame with tremendous thickness and muscle.

MJT CASH 228SCash looked like the type to be a Herd Sire right from the beginning. His first fall he showed at Lloyd Roundup and had the highest rate of gain of any calf of any breed there. He was Champion Bull Calf and won “King of the Ring” (the same as his sire Total had done).

Price: $50.00/strawMaxi is a three time Agribition class winner and 2004 Reserve Senior Champion Bull. Both his sons and daughters have excelled in the show ring. His daughters have beautiful udders and are very maternal. Maxi’s ability to improve udders and feet have been a real bonus over the commercial cows and the rest of the herd. He also throws long straight hair into his genetics. We have had 154 calves with an average BW of 90lbs.

Price: $50.00/straw Stamina had his turn in the show ring. He brought home the Reserve National Champion banner from Farmfair in 2006 as a calf. We then drew 5,000 straws of semen, starting from the age of 10 months. At 10 months he was producing 300 straws a week and progressed aggressively from then on. This semen volume and quality is a good sign of his great fertility and breeding ability. Another great trait of Stamina is his ability to out breed himself. As he has breed show champions, literally from the west coast of B.C all the way to the Maritimes. We have 2 & 3 year old Stami daughters, with beautiful tight udders with small teats, they are unbelievably maternal even as 2 year olds. We have 122 Stamina calves up to 2011, with the average BW of 87lbs.

are You Prepared For Breeding Season? It’s never too early to think ahead and prepare for the upcoming breeding season. We suggest following these simple steps to save time, avoid last minute hassle and make life a little easier for yourself and the people you work and live with. • Make sure your cow herd is healthy and in good breeding condition, proper nutrition is key. • Inspect your tank and have it filled with liquid nitrogen before you order semen. • Allow enough time for shipping. It’s best to order semen at least two weeks in advance of breeding date. • Make a check list for A.I. supplies and have these items on hand in advance of breeding. • Record your work, make sure your record keeping tools are accessible so you’ll be sure to use them.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the best scientific tool available for improving genetic merit within a herd. Unfortunately, this tool is often misunderstood and misused, causing confusion and distrust. An EPD is the difference between the predicted average performance of an animal’s future progeny and the average progeny performance of another animal whose EPD is zero, assuming that bulls are mated to similar cows, or vice versa. It is important to remember that an EPD is not a prediction of individual performance. Information used in computing EPDs includes pedigree and performance of relatives, self, and progeny. An EPD does not correspond to any specific value for a particular trait. (i.e. a weaning weight EPD of 46.6 does not equal an actual weaning weight of 650 lbs for an animal’s progeny). Nor can EPDs for different breeds be compared to one another. The method used to compute EPDs takes into account environmental & management differences among contemporary groups (animals of the same age and sex raised under the same management conditions), the genetic merit of cows that a bull is bred to, an animal’s own performance and that of their relatives, and genetic trends of the entire breed. It is often thought that EPDs are calculated in the same way as 205-day adjusted weights. This is not the case. To calculate EPDs on all recorded animals many more than 1 million equations must be calculated simultaneously.A bull with great EPDs does not guarantee a superior calf crop. A common producer complaint about EPDs is that they do not seem to correspond to actual data. As EPDs rely on information provided by the producer, it is critical that the correct information be submitted (e.g. correctly identifying different contemporary groups). In addition, billions

of genetically different progeny are possible from just a single mating! This means that there is a lot of variation possible. Producers should also remember that EPDs are a prediction of the average progeny performance. Therefore it is very possible to have a calf or two that don’t fit in with the rest! This is where accuracy comes in.Accuracy is a value between 0 and 1 that attempts to determine how close the prediction (EPD) is to the true breeding value. Accuracy values increase as the amount of information known on an animal increases (what is known about his own performance, relative’s performance, and progeny performance). Charts provided in the Sire Summary and EPD Tools, Averages & Trends documents on the CHA website provide a good example of how EPDs can change with differing accuracy levels. The higher the accuracy, the less likely an EPD will change with the addition of new data. Accuracy represents how close the reported EPD is to the true genetic merit of the animal.

to the difference between the average actual weaning weights of their calves in this example, which amounts to 3.7. Even though Bull A has a calf with the highest weaning weight, the rest of the calves show that his EPD should be lower than Bull B’s. Large contemporary groupings and large numbers of progeny in general will result in an EPD that reflects actual data much more closely. The CHA is involved in a four-country genetic evaluation, called PACE (Pan American Cattle Evaluation), which includes data from Canada, the United States, Argentina, and Uruguay. EPDs on animals from these four countries are directly comparable. The evaluation is run twice yearly, in July and December. For more information, please read the EPD Tools, Averages & Trends and Sire Summary Introduction documents (also updated twice yearly) on the CHA website or contact Karin at the office.

Canadian Hereford Association EPDs

Calving Ease EPD and AccuracyCalving Ease EPDs are calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted.

Birth Weight EPD and AccuracyBirth weight is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birth weight EPDs usually indicate more calving difficulty.

Weaning Weight EPD and AccuracyThe weaning EPD reflects progeny growth differences up to 205 days of age.

Yearling Weight EPD and AccuracyThe yearling EPD reflects progeny growth differences through to 365 days of age.

Milk EPD and AccuracyThe milk EPD indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning.

Total Maternal EPDAlso known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus ½ the weaning weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205 days and combines the genetics for pre-weaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny.

Maternal Calving Ease EPD and AccuracyMaternal Calving Ease EPD represents the ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first calf heifers, when compared to daughters of other sires. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing daughters with a higher probability of unassisted calving.

Scrotal Circumference EPD and AccuracyThe Scrotal Circumference EPD reflects differences in scrotal measurements, taken in centimetres and adjusted to 365 days of age. The SC EPD is positively associated with age at puberty of progeny.

Cow WT EPD and AccuracyThe Cow WT EPD reflects differences in the mature weight of a sire’s daughters. This is important as it is related to maintenance energy requirements.

Stayability EPD and AccuracyThe Stay EPD reflects differences in the probability that a sire’s daughters will remain in production to produce 3 consecutive calves when retained as breeding heifers.

Maternal Productivity Index and AccuracyMPI combines the traits of weaning weight, milk, cow weight and stayability based on their relative economic importance, and then ranks animals based on the predicted maternal strength of their progeny within the population.

Feedlot Merit Index and AccuracyFMI combines the traits of calving ease, weaning weight, yearling weight, rib-eye area, marbling and fat based on their relative economic importance, and then ranks animals based on the predicted profitability of their feeder progeny within the population.

REA EPD and AccuracyThe REA EPD reflects differences in rib-eye area carcass measures in feeder progeny.

Fat EPD and AccuracyThe Fat EPD reflects differences in carcass backfat measures in feeder progeny.

Marbling Fat EPD and AccuracyThe MARB EPD reflects differences in carcass measures of marbling in feeder progeny, using USDA marbling scores.

EPDs denoted in blue indicate a Trait Leader. Trait leaders are in the top 20% of the breed with 0.60 accuracy.Hereford EPD Averages
