NOT TAKEN FOR GRANTED

Shorty had met his wife a long time ago at a rodeo in a local town. She was there with some friends and he was there helping a friend of his with the rodeo stock. They had bumped into each other at the beer gardens after the rodeo was over and their meeting was purely by chance. Shorty seldom made eye contact in public, especially with the ladies and when he bumped into her by accident, spilling her beer all over her tee shirt, he didn’t know whether or not he should run.

He decided to stay and help her out and…well one thing lead to another and they ended up married a couple of years later. Their courtship was pretty ordinary, she worked for the Forest Service and they made the best time they could during the dating phase. Actually Shorty was pretty happy the way things were going…until that early spring day the year they married.

She had decided that Shorty needed to meet her parents. Shorty had heard lots about them, he had even seen some photos, and he was pretty sure that the actual meeting thing just may have been over rated. He knew they were ranchers, and that they lived about a twelve hour drive away.

“Are you sure they have time for us?” Shorty asked.

“Yes. Dad is finished calving and Mom said they will be home this weekend. It will be fine.”

So it was that the two of them found themselves driving down a dirt driveway into a humble looking yard early one afternoon. As the pick up rolled to a stop in front of the house, a lady Shorty recognized as his future Mother in law ran towards the truck, arms open to her daughter.

“Ma’am” Shorty greeted her once he was introduced.

“Oh Shorty…call me Jean!”

“Yes Ma’am”

Jean’s eyes were focussed on something behind Shorty, and when he turned to look he saw the father in law walking towards the three of them.

“Frank…come and say hi to Shorty!”

Frank ignored his wife’s request entirely; instead he embraced his daughter with a clumsy albeit a genuine hug.

“Dad…this is Shorty, Shorty…my Dad”

“Sir.”

“Shit son. My name is Frank. Use it.”

“Yes sir…Frank”

The four of them spent the evening talking, well three of them talked….Shorty mostly listened. They seemed to be a pretty good family and Shorty went to sleep that night feeling pretty good about himself.

The next morning the women decided they needed to go into town for a bit, so Frank suggested that maybe Shorty could go with him. Frank was off to a neighbor’s place to look at some bulls. Shorty figured that sounded safe, so he set off with Frank in the ranch rocket.

“What do ya look for in a bull?”

Shorty looked across the truck at the old man. “Well…I would have to see the cows…”

Shorty paused. Frank smiled at his prisoner.

“Well…..I’ll tell you what. I look at buying a bull ‘bout the same as I look at pickin’ a son in law.”

Shorty swallowed….hard.

“You want the same thing, if you think about it.”

“Sir?”

“A bull has to have to have a good solid confirmation; he has to be pleasing to the eye.” Frank glanced to his right, Shorty was sitting bolt upright, staring straight ahead. He smiled to himself.

“He has to have good strong genetics…..you an only child Shorty?”

“Yes Sir.”

“Hmmmm.Your Dad and Mom still with us?”

“Yes Sir”

“They both get around okay?” Frank didn’t wait for the answer. “Are they both still pretty sharp?”

“Yes Sir”

“Only one kid though huh? My bull has to be a breedin’ son of a bitch. He has got to get out there and get the job done. None of this laying around under a tree all day….he has to get out and go.”

Shorty stared straight ahead. He had lost track of the conversation. Was Frank talking about his bulls or his wish list for a son in law? Shopping with the girls was starting to look pretty good right about now. Shorty suddenly realized that Frank was still talking.

Show Time

Feb. 1, 2015: The day marking the ‘Hereford – Champion of the World’ and ‘Hereford – Miss World’ award ceremony.

2014 Champions Revealed

With an eager crowd gathered around the arena, each contestant stood anxiously awaiting the reveal of the 2014 World titles. After an introduction of each animal and breeder, announcer Rob Schacher called the names of top bull and female winners. Since live animals could not be easily transported from four continents to the Stock Show, cardboard cutouts represented each winning animal. Prize money totaling $28,000 USD was awarded to contestants- $3000 USD for regional winners, $5000 USD for international champions.

Fernando Alfonso, from Cabaña Las Anitas of Montevideo, Uruguay, unanimously claimed 2014 ‘Hereford – Champion of the World’ with his bull Kamikaze. Winning the 2014 Expo Prado spring-boarded Kamikaze into the South American regional championship, inevitably securing his place among top

2014

bulls worldwide for the competition.

Cayley Brown of Princeton, British Columbia, Canada, captured her second ‘Miss World’ title in three years with her female CB 122L Lady B 222Z. Lady B first won the Canadian Western Agribition before being selected as the North American Regional Champion Female.

“It’s really an honor to win Miss World with how the show is run,” Brown said. “It’s an honor that such a broad spectrum of different views and ways of looking at cattle can appreciate what I have. It really helps for marketing.”

The Competition

Entries from 45 countries competed for the World titles in the competition, which was hosted by HerefordBreeder.net. Breeders competed in their own national show to qualify for a regional championship drive, held similar to an on-hoof show common to rural communities. After champion cattle were selected in the four global regions, the owners qualified to compete for ‘Champion of the World’ and ‘Miss World’ titles.

HEREFORD CHAMPION OF THE WORLD

Eight Hereford cattle breeders from around the world traveled to the Lone Star State Jan. 31 to Feb. 7 to compete in the ‘Hereford – Champion of the World’ (COW) and ‘Hereford – Miss World’ competition held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. From watching the judge award the Grand Champion Hereford at the US National Show to personal Hereford herd tours throughout the western frontier, competitors received a true ‘taste of Texas’ throughout the week.

You Ought to Know.......that spring of 2015 established unprecedented price records in the production of beef cattle throughout the world. Although beef is not considered a staple, but a luxury item throughout the globe, economic factors of supply and demand are the engines which drive this market forward. In the majority of cases, all levels of the beef chain are realizing long awaited profits allowing producers to set long term plans for the years that lie ahead.

Late fall 2014 and 2015 spring bull sales have been more than ideal....if you had trouble selling your bulls for a well deserved premium....you did not do anything about your marketing program. So, what makes one bull sale more successful that another a few miles apart or a few weeks apart? No doubt, quality and condition of the bulls selling is an important factor, but in many cases the genetics are similar or relatively the same as artificial insemination and embryo transfer has allowed breeders to compete on the same playing field. The difference then boils down to customer service and the “power of advertising!”

Over the past decade, we have seen enormous change in the Hereford breed and its membership....the major-ity of those who chose to weather the storm and improve the herd and their program are young second and third generation men and women, many graduates of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. Since I had the opportunity to work with and watch these young breeders move forward, those who were more aggressive with their promotion through advertising, the electronic highway and livestock shows are now reaping their well earned rewards from advertising they could barely afford in the lean years. Those who opted to be contract advertisers have established a quality level of image for their program....hence, those looking for Herefords will shop there first. Some will argue that the new generation uses the electronic highway to often, but we must remind ourselves that the average age of farmers and ranchers in North America is over fifty-eight years of age....and if they are like me, they want to sit and read publications and view the pictures. Since the success of a breed or program is based on selling bulls to ranchers... publication advertising remains the broadest level of promotion to each and every program. The more frequent ... the more successful...just ask Tim’s or MacDon-alds!

Since the Canadian Junior Hereford Association has been a great training ground for the future of the livestock industry and agriculture in general, we must not forget their efforts as they host Bonanza and the AGM in

Fredericton, New Brunswick in the last weekend of July. Keeping the juniors in mind, the 8th annual T Bar Invitational, is being held in Saskatoon on June 23 and 24th at the beautiful and challenging Dakota

Dunes Golf course, just a short week prior to the PGA Canadian Tour being held there. Funds raised by this tournament (which is open to golfers of every age and caliber) go directly to the Canadian Junior

Associations for the development of their programs and scholarships. T Bar C Cattle Co. Ltd. is a livestock marketing company dedicated to the advancement of youth in the livestock industry.

Plan to be there for a fun time and do you part in supporting the juniors of Canada!

I Just Thought You Ought To Know.

By: Chris Poley

Since the end of May, I have had a lot of windshield time touring purebred and commercial operations in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, then back through all four provinces a second time and now starting the third. There have been a couple of common themes throughout; a late growing season and a lot of optimism in the cattle business. The outlook for the cow/calf producer has never looked better and although it’s going to take a lot more operating and a little faith from the banks, feeders have more margin in feeding these high dollar calves than they have had in years and that is what it takes…everyone involved needs to make money.

The fact that there are less dispersals, both purebred and commercial this fall, is positive, people don’t hate their cows when there is money in them. Early this spring I had a major market operator tell me all their fall bred cow sales were booked solid. That same manager told me at the end of July, that half had cancelled. Now that does not mean the cowherd is going to jump into expansion mode, in fact, I believe it will continue to contract for a while. This fall the average cull rate on most ranches will be double that of normal. Everyone I talked to is planning to “clean house”, wild ones, poor producers, bad footed, bad uddered or just plain ugly, are all heading to town at $1.10 to $1.30 or better still...are getting on a truck, with a one way ticket. There was not a significant amount of heifers sent out into breeding pastures this spring. I know of several groups that ended up contracted for feed and slaughter before the bulls got turned out or were pulled after only a few days because the guarantee of the contract was too many dollars to pass up in September, on the hope of a bred heifer sale in December. My feeling is that heifer calves will all come to town this fall along with their brothers, due to their value as the general rancher’s attitude is “it’s my time to cash in”, and no one can blame them.

I’m very optimistic about the bred cow market this fall as numbers offered are less...people want to expand their inventories and for the first time, in a long time, their bankers are on board. The business model works and

everyone is in agreement that the next ten years in the beef cattle market look great! In this high tech world of mass production, nobody is ever going to be able to figure out a way to “factory farm” beef cattle, a cow’s gestation is long and you can’t control the environment of wide open spaces, where a cow thrives the best and most efficiently.

The number of bulls going to town, post breeding, gets my heart rate up. Most auction marts are reporting double the usual number of bulls coming to town. It is understandable why many ranchers do not want to winter older bulls when they can ship them early for a record price, in many cases, close to or above the original purchase price. Take that salvage value, add eight months feed, some fence repair, a semen test, some death loss factored in and purchase new semen tested, delivered bulls when you need them. I recently talked to one larger producer who pulled and shipped all his bulls except the two he purchased this spring.

Now, purebred breeders, don’t start to have greedy thoughts! I already said that the cowherd is going to continue to shrink, so over all the need for bulls will be less and in the last twenty years that I’ve been involved in this industry, I have never seen a shortage of bulls! Be ruthless with the knife and cash in the “he might make the bull sale if we feed the hell out of him” calves. You do not need to put all that feed into him, semen test, picture, catalogue him and then ship him, cause there was not anyone needing that medium quality bull at your sale...you will be doing yourself and the industry a favor. Next spring you will be able to gross more money on fewer bulls than you ever have and the steers you sell, will pay the bills upfront this fall.

Watch for Star and her Action bull calf “Big Bang 5C” born January 30th at the summer shows and Agribition. We have a very interesting group of Action calves on the ground. They all have a tremendous amount of bone, are structurally correct with strong hip and hind leg.

Our second crop of calves sired by Zappa are outstanding. We couldn’t be more pleased with the structure, hair, disposition and over all quality of these calves.

She will be the lead off bred heifer in our show string this summer and fall and will feature at Take the Next Step Sale on October 17th, 2015.

Come take a look at Barbie 1A, a Stetson daughter with a flawless Zappa heifer calf TL 3C born January 23rd at side. These calves will certainly be highlights at our upcoming production sales.

Over the past decade, we have seen enormous change in the Hereford breed and its membership....the majority of those who chose to weather the storm and improve the herd and their program are young second and third generation men and women, many graduates of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. Some will argue that the new generation uses the electronic highway too often, but we must remind ourselves that the average age of farmers and ranchers in North America is over fifty-eight years of age....and if they are like me, they want to sit and read publications and view the pictures. Since the success of a breed or program is based on selling bulls to ranchers... publication advertising remains the broadest level of promotion to each and every program. The more frequent ... the more successful...just ask Tim’s or MacDonalds!

Since the Canadian Junior Hereford Association has been a great training ground for the future of the livestock industry and agriculture in general, we must not forget their efforts as they host Bonanza and the AGM in

Fredericton, New Brunswick in the last weekend of July. Keeping the juniors in mind, the 8th annual T Bar Invitational is being held in Saskatoon on June 23 and 24th at the beautiful and challenging Dakota

I Just Thought You Ought To Know!

“Yes Ma’am.”

“Yes Sir.”

“They both get around okay?” Frank didn’t wait for the answer. “Are they both still pretty sharp?”

“Yes Sir.”

“He’s got be solid on his feet and legs and anything that don’t pass the semen test around here gets his head cut off. You with me on this Shorty?”

“Sir?”

Frank glanced over at the young man. He was jammed into the corner of the seat, smiling nervously at the driver.

“You okay?”

“I’ve never been semen tested” Shorty blurted.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Frank paused, mostly for effect, and then began to laugh. “Geez Shorty….are you nervous or what? I am talking about bulls here. My daughter can make up her own mind, always has. Besides, she ain’t near as picky with her men as I am with my bulls.”

Shorty glanced to his left. Frank was grinning from ear to ear. They spent the rest of the day looking at bulls, then cows before returning the ranch for supper. That evening was a lot more comfortable for Shorty than the first night had been and as he listened to the stories and the good natured banter between the members of the family he realized that Frank had bred way over his head as well.

This story is dedicated to Frank Strimbold. Frank and Dianne touched a lot of lives over the years and I was lucky enough to be one of them. He suggested this story line to me a couple of years ago; he thought it would make a good story. Unfortunately Frank lost his battle with cancer in March of this year. He will be missed, but never forgotten by all of us that were lucky enough to have known him.

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition, and all major national Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

CANADIAN JUNIOR HEREFORD BREEDER CAPTURES WORLD CROWN!Braden Calvert, Carberry, Manitoba and his Winnipeg based team of Kyle Kurz, Lucas Van Den Bosch and Brendan Wilson defeated Switzerland 6-3 to capture the World Junior Curling title in Tallinn, Estonia during the first week of March 2015. Braden and his team finished fourth at the 2014 World Junior Curling Championships.

Herefords Today carried a biography of Braden Calvert in the 2014 Spring issue titled “Proudly... A Canadian Junior.” In a Canadian Press interview, Braden said “It’s just unbelievable...when you start the season, you never quite picture that it’s going to end up like this. It’s pretty special to not only bring home a medal, but a gold medal. It’s just icing on the cake!”

A great year for curling and the Hereford Breed... congratulations Braden and team!

My last article offered pointers on selecting bulls for your breeding program, but what happens when you get your bull home can have a tremendous impact on his reproductive success and your satisfaction with your purchase.

Many producers lack adequate facilities to house bulls; therefore, the preference is often to put off delivery as long as possible; hopefully just before he is needed. Arrival at a new facility is stressful for any animal – add to this a change in diet, social dominance issues, fighting, major or minor injuries, exposure to new bacteria and viruses to name a few. In an ideal world every bull would have his own pen since mixing of bulls invariably results in fighting to establish dominance. If mixing is to occur then bulls should be placed according to age/ size. Yearlings with yearlings; two-year olds and older together. Even better would be to mix two-year olds and mature bulls in their own respective groups. My preference when mixing bulls is that all go into a new pen together as opposed to introducing a single bull to an established group. Fighting will still occur, but the new guy is less likely to be the focus. Similarly, when putting bulls to pasture try to place young bulls with young bulls and mature bulls with mature bulls. Mixing age groups invariably results in the mature bull dominating the younger bull and interfering in his breeding attempts. If you want to use the younger bulls in this breeding group, let the mature bulls breed for the first cycle or two of the breeding season, remove them, and then follow with the younger bulls. This will also give the younger bulls more time to mature and fewer cows to breed.

The two main causes of declines in sperm quality are heat and stress. Heat may come from a fever, inflammation of the scrotum or an increase in environmental temperature. Fat deposits in the neck of the scrotum can also impair the testicular cooling mechanism. Pain, soreness from fighting, bad weather are some of the causes of stress; however, the stressor needs to be of about 3 to 4 days duration to have a negative effect on sperm quality. Chasing a bull up a chute won’t do it! The severity and duration of the heat and stress largely determine how bad the sperm will be affected and for how long. A single severe case of footrot may affect sperm production so dramatically that the bull will not have a satisfactory semen count (>70% morphologically normal) for the entire summer. Heat and stress can occur at the same time with a single condition. Bulls that are very sick for a few to several weeks may undergo testicular degeneration where the testicles actually shrink in size, sperm production is virtually eliminated and the few that are present are abnormal. Surprisingly, I have seen bulls recover from degeneration, but several months are required. Heat and stress tend to result in the appearance of the same sperm defects

which appear sequentially in the semen sample as the sperm enter the ejaculatory pool similar to the appearance of specific birth defects being linked to the stage of gestation when the toxin was consumed. Relatively minor cases of stress can result in an increase in sperm midpiece defects; specifically, the distal midpiece defect. The spermatogenic response to stress varies between bulls with some showing the defect and others not, but we do know that it is usually short-lived with many showing a full recovery in as little as 7 to 10 days.

We recommend 1 yearling to be placed with 15 to 20 cycling cows. “Yearling” is loosely used when referring to bulls 12 to 18 months of age. Two-year olds and older - 1 bull per 25 to 30 cows. Individuals in both age groups can handle more cows, but management must watch closely to ensure that cows are getting pregnant in a timely fashion and that the bull(s) do not lose excess condition or get injured. Bulls with larger scrotal circumferences produce more sperm and are more likely to settle more cows in a shorter time-frame than smaller scrotalled bulls.

Yearling bulls are commonly fed grain-based concentrate diets to grow them prior to sale. The more fleshy bulls are typically the best fed and can often have a hard time adapting to a forage-based diet at the same time that they are supposed to be breeding cows – hence the so-called “melting” phenomenon. When your bull is delivered ask what he has been fed and try to feed him similarly. If the breeder has moved him to a largely forage ration then great. Hopefully, it wasn’t just the day before! If concentrate was being fed, try your best to pick up the same or similar feed and continue feeding him at about 50 to 70% of what he was being fed and reduce the amount gradually until the desired amount is reached. The remainder of the ration should be good quality hay with a total ration protein content of at least 12%.

Hard working bulls usually lose some condition throughout the breeding season, but excessive weight loss should be avoided. It is common for yearling bulls to lose up to 2 cm in scrotal circumference between the beginning and end of breeding season. Yearling bulls are still growing and will serve a single cow many more times than a mature bull; usually at the expense of their own appearance. Inexperienced bulls are also more prone to breeding injuries; therefore, overuse should be avoided otherwise his first breeding season could be his last. Yearling and two-year old bulls should be pulled from the breeding field long before the cows come home and fed carefully to restore them to breeding condition for next year. Always vaccinate your bulls with the same vaccines used in the cow herd and consider employing a footrot vaccine.

Four judges from each region, and online votes from HerefordBreeder.net’s Facebook members, evaluated top Hereford bulls and Hereford females. Thirty-one countries participated in judging the qualifying cattle. International champions were a result of the total composite score.

The idea for the competition was the brainchild of PJ Budler, founder and CEO of TheCattleMarket.net, and organizer of the HerefordBreeder.net competition. “There were many countries around the world that were doing exciting things in the Hereford breed,” said Budler. “I thought, why don’t we bring them all together and create awareness and goodwill, and share trade opportunities between them.” The goal for the business is to raise the profile of Hereford breeders and associations around the world, and create a platform where everything is centralized and everyone is given equal exposure.

“The ‘Champion of the World’ Hereford competition has been very influential in helping us to develop marketing leads for our genetics,” said David Ross, representing Moeskær Polled Herefords of Denmark. Ross continued saying that the competition has been a useful tool in marketing their cattle on an international level.

“There are animals and programs around the world that no one would have known about if it wasn’t for this initiative,” said Budler.

Breeders noticed increased international traffic to their cattle at national shows and online.

Congratulations to MJT Cattle Company Ltd., Edgerton, AB on being awarded the silver medal in the 2014 Champion of North America competition with MJT Nitro Duke ET 78A who was named Supreme Champion Overall Breeds at the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup 2014 and the National Champion Horned Hereford Bull at Canadian Western Agribition 2014.

Many commercial producers and purebred seed stock cattlemen often start to question the appearance of lots of droplets appearing on the semen evaluation forms of young bulls. These cause frustration when bulls have to be retested. They collectively are probably the most numerous defects we see as veterinarians when performing breeding soundness exams (semen evaluations) in the spring. This article will hopefully shed some light on the situation and take away some of this frustration by providing a better understanding of what they represent. There is no doubt we see many more droplets on average in young immature bulls that are just reaching sexual maturity (puberty). These bulls are less active and especially when not housed close to cycling females droplets really are a very frequent occurrence. One must realize two important facts. One is when maturing in the testicles epididymis (little knob at the bottom of the testicles) 100% of the sperm start with a proximal droplet. This is wiggled or shook off as the sperm matures and travels through the canals within the epididymis. Because the sperm with droplets are essentially not mature fertility is affected. When we look at distal droplets there are essentially two types those severely affected (pathologic) and those that will be shook off later (physiological). In a study by Dr. Jacob Thundathil of the UCVM (University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine) he found that the percentage of droplets in ejaculated sperm goes down in the time it is chilled to be frozen and put into straws for artificial insemination. This time interval is only three or so hours so if we extrapolate the same thing must happen with natural breeding. As the sperm is swimming up the vagina and into the uterus a number of these distal droplets are shook off and are left behind. As a result the distal droplets aren’t near as serious a defect as the proximal ones. As mentioned all sperm when formed start with a proximal droplet and as maturation in the canals of the epididymis these become distal droplets and then are shed off in the normal chain of events. If we see lots of proximal droplets they are often associated with other sperm defects such as head defects in a number of cases. Droplets are really the main cause why many young bulls fail their first semen evaluation especially when done at a very young age. This is why it is not recommended to test a beef bull before 12 months of age and bison mature much later so 18 months for them is the minimum age. As an average

Proximal & Distal Droplets In Young Bulls

By Roy Lewis DVM

that is why about 50% of twelve-month-old bulls pass and that is elevated to 75% by the time they are fourteen to fifteen months. Many very young bulls that fail on initial semen tests pass in subsequent ones one to two months later. The issue is why we as veterinarians can’t predict ahead of time which ones will improve greatly so the only way is retesting them. If the young bulls are housed close to cycling females and ejaculate off the senescent semen that in my opinion helps to speed up the improvement. With the veterinarian documenting on the semen form the morphological defects you can see over time if improvement is happening. The worst case I have seen improve was a young bull with essentially 100% proximal droplets and over several months the percentage kept decreasing and eventually he had excellent semen as a two year old. He was a show bull and the question always comes up was he too fat, inactive, et cetera which may have added to his issue for sure. When we encounter lots of droplets in mature bulls (that is much rarer) veterinarians usually are cognizant of which other defects accompany the droplets to determine the overall prognosis. Again the proximal droplets are much more severe than the distal droplets keeping in mind a certain percentage are shed before the sperm contact the egg in a natural breeding situation. If as producers you are evaluating semen forms then if most of the defects are distal droplets in a young bull and he still passes his semen test (overall defects are less than 30%) there is a very good chance those defects will lessen with maturity and usage. Over the years we have upped the ante by testing even younger bulls. In some instances bull sale dates have remained the same yet the purebred producers are calving later which translates into veterinarians testing younger and younger bulls. If just selling off the farm test the bulls as mature as possible. The warm spring weather and cows cycling close by really makes for an easier time evaluating sperm than in the dead of winter and with bulls just over one year of age. Even one to two weeks older makes a big difference. If semen evaluation is done later the pass rate will be higher and it will be easier on everyone including the bulls. Don’t ask your veterinarian to try evaluating bulls less than one year of age. Please wait till they are older as it is for yours and the bulls benefit.

What a great spring it has been. Record cattle prices are the headlines in any agricultural publication you pick up. This spring’s bull sales were simply amazing as well! Many of the sales were up 30% or better than last year, putting big smiles on breeders’ faces. They finally saw extra reward for all their investment and time committed in being a seed stock producer. The guys buying bulls were happy giving it too, as they already had seen bigger profits from their calves and record salvage out of their old bulls. There were many record averaging and grossing sales, with several record selling individuals too!

It was fun to visit with beef producers as we traveled up and down the road, every week they marvelled over the cattle market and how it just seemed to get a little higher each week. This left many of the number crunching analysts scratching their heads as well. Even though the retail prices have climbed (19% higher this March than March of 2014,) the demand is staying strong. Retail beef prices have long gone past the level where the “experts” predicted we would hit resistance. A couple of things have worked in our favour though, low oil prices have led to savings at the pump, which helped the average consumer balance the budget. Also the price of “other” proteins have risen as well. Pork prices were up 16% in the first quarter of 2015, led by bacon up an amazing 24%; the bacon on a” Baconator” is becoming a pricy option to go with North America’s beloved hamburger. Chicken rose in the first quarter as well 6%.

There is a lot of room for optimism as we look to the future; beef is still considered the King of the Bar-B-Q. With summer right around the corner, peak beef consuming months are ahead. Every time I eat out, which is often being on the road in excess of 250 days a year, I pay attention to what people are ordering around me and more often than not, it’s beef and the fancier the restaurant, the more they want quality beef cuts. I actually eat more out of a brown

By: Chris Poley

bag than I do a sit down restaurant though and I tell you even with as many burger joints as there are, pick anyone of them at meal time and there is nothing “fast” about them. Every fast food chain you pull into at lunch or supper time has a line up and it’s mostly burgers going out the window. Beef consumption is still strong even at today’s prices and supply is not keeping up, beef production in Canada is down 5.4% year to date. There will be 100,000 less calves born in Western Canada this spring.

The rebuilding process will begin its long and slow road back next year as heifers being bred this year will begin to calve, but if Canada continues at a similar cow slaughter rate as last year, it will be somewhat offset again. No matter how we look at it or approach it, the better part of the next decade will be spent rebuilding Canada’s cow herd that eroded away over the past dozen years.

Another thing this rebuilding process is going to need and none of the number crunching analysts talk about it, is youth. We are going to need to retain and attract back more of our beef farm kids home to the ranch. It is crucial to the beef industry today that we achieve this task. Our group of companies has always been one of this nation’s largest beef junior association supporters and I hope you will join us June 23rd and 24th as a sponsor of the 8th annual T Bar Invitational. An event to raise money for junior associations to enhance their programming to keep youth interested and involved in the beef industry.

WRAY, DON

June 13, 1955 – January 26, 2015 Don passed away on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 59. He was born in Reston on June 13, 1955, the third son of John and Mabel Wray of Tilston. He was raised on the farm at Tilston with his elder brothers, Bill and Ken and his younger sister, Sharon. He always felt very lucky that his grandma, Ethel Moir, lived with their family, off and on, for most of his growing up years. They all had a special relationship with Grandma.

Don was a true farm boy, milking cows from an early age and doing chores and whatever other tasks his parents assigned. Don had a deep love and true respect for his mom and dad. Don started school at Tilston and finished at Pierson, graduating in 1973. Don loved sports and played baseball and hockey into his adult life. After school, Don began farming with his dad and brother Ken, raising mixed grains, cattle and sometimes pigs. They also began building their registered Polled Hereford herds; Don’s herd would eventually become known to many as Mil-Wray Polled Herefords.

In 1974 Don began dating Wanda Millions and they were married in 1981. Their son Tyler was born in 1987, and daughter Lenna in 1990. This began the most important, all-consuming job of Don’s life. He was an amazing husband and dad. His family, and especially his kids, were always his first priority. Don truly was a big bear of a man, who would do anything to help anyone. He was never comfortable being the center of attention and hated to ask anyone for anything.

He was predeceased by his father John, brother Bill, grandma Ethel Moir; in-laws Marie and Garnet Millions, and sister-in-law, Judy Millions. His memory will live forever in the hearts of his wife Wanda, his children Tyler and Lenna, mother Mabel, brother Ken (Judy), sister Sharon (Gerry) Brick and sister-in-law Valorie; also by Wanda’s siblings, Deanna (Ron) Hoffman, Brian Millions, Blaine (Debbie) Millions, Clare (Aggie) Millions, Lorraine (Brad) Kellington, Vern (Corrine) Millions, and Vaughn (Lori) Millions, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, both Wray and Millions. Don’s memory will be cherished by everyone who knew him.
