Teams will be formed for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grade boys and 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grade girls to participate in competitive play against other traveling and school based teams. The team roster will be limited to a max of 10 members, based upon the tryout sessions. Registration is open to River Forest Residents only! It is mandatory that your child is registered, sign the program wavier, and make full program payment no later than 48 hours prior to the tryout date. In the event your child does not make the team, your payment will be fully refunded! Registration does not guarantee a spot on the team. If 10 resident players have not registered for a specific team within 48 hours of the tryout date, non resident registration will be accepted to reach the maximum ten players. Your child must attend the tryouts to be considered for the team. Failure to attend the tryouts will disqualify your child from participating in the Foresters Travel Basketball Program. Being at tryouts shows that your child is committed to being part of a team.

You may only register for the grade you are in, and participants will not be allowed to play up or down a grade level. All players who attended the tryouts will be contacted by the Park District Athletic Supervisor on their status of making the team. Players who did not make a team will be contacted first.

Tryouts will be physically demanding. The primary basis of team selection is the ability to perform related basketball skills. A qualified selection committee has been formed, and the committee will evaluate the talent of each player during tryouts. The selection committee will make the final decision on the players to be selected for each team, however, the coaches’ opinion will be considered as part of the process. Parents are asked to drop off their son or daughter for the tryout and pick them up at the completion of the tryout. No parents will be allowed in the gym during the tryouts.

Page 20: 2014 Fall Fun Guide

Dear River Forest Residents,

Welcome to the River Forest Park District’s 2014 Fall Fun Guide! Please browse through the Guide and try one of the many programs that the Park District has to offer.

The Park District is offering a special event opportunity each month during our fall season. Some of the events require pre-registration, and I encourage you to sign up early, as special events traditionally fill up quickly. Please go to the inside cover of this Fall Fun Guide or visit www.rfparks.com for more information.

We Want to Hear From Our Residents

The River Forest Park District Board of Commissioners meet monthly to conduct business and listen to comments and suggestions from our residents. Most months, the Park Board Members are the only persons in attendance.

I encourage all our residents to attend a Park Board Meeting and share your thoughts on how we can better serve you. Our meetings usually last an hour, and while we follow an agenda, our meetings are fairly informal. I promise if you want to talk about something Park District related, we will listen and discuss it with you. If we cannot give you an answer, we will follow up with you immediately. Please go to www.rfparks.com for our Board Meeting Schedule. Our meetings begin at 6 PM, and I hope you will join us.

Platform Tennis

September 1st begins the 2014-2015 new platform tennis season, with the Men’s and Women’s House and Travel Leagues beginning soon after. This year, participation in the Chicago Men’s Platform Tennis League will be offered for our members who are looking for more of a challenge. Last year, we sold out of our platform tennis memberships, and we expect the demand to be even greater this year. If you are planning on registering for a membership, I encourage you to do so early.

River Forest Parks Foundation

Please welcome River Forest residents Julie Moller and Katarina Berin as new Board Members to the River Forest Parks Foundation Board. Both residents have a long background in giving back to their community and supporting parks and recreation. Congratulations to both Julie and Katarina on their new appointment.

Priory Playground Project

Beginning in late summer, work will begin on the construction of a new playground in Priory Park. The new playground will include a 2-5 year old playground, a 5-12 year old playground, and a new rubber surface under the entire playground, all located closer to the parking lot. The playground is expected to reopen around October 15th. Check out the Park District website at www.rfparks.com for up to date information on the project. For more information on any of the Park District program offerings or capital improvement projects, please visit the Park District website at www.rfparks.com

On behalf of all of your River Forest Park District Commissioners: Paul Koester, Lou Nieto, Beth Dunne, Ross Roloff, and myself, together with the entire staff, have a great fall, and don’t forget to Take Time for Fun!

oil painting without drawingAges: 18 & up; beginner to advanced artistsThis workshop teaches an easy-to-learn method of placing shapes into canvas in the correct tone and color, allowing you to paint any subject well, without the use of drawing. Correct proportions will occur automatically as a result of painting tones and shapes. A logical approach to color mixing is taught, enabling you to accurately analyze and match any color. This unique non-drawing, tonal painting system is believed to be the same method used by Sargent, Velazquez, and Rembrandt to produce their greatest works. The subject may be different, but the same method applies to all – portrait, landscape, or still life. By learning how to “see” as the painter sees, you will be able to paint what is actually before you.Min 3/Max 8

Green Block PartyGreen Block Party is an opportunity for River Forest residents to make their block parties green. By checking “yes” to host a Green Block Party on the Village of River Forest block party permit application, your block parties will receive a party kit which includes a free Earth Machine compost bin along with instructions on how to use the bin and suggestions for green block party activities. The compost bin is a gift to the block, and residents can decide who keeps it and how it will be used. This program is sponsored by the River Forest Parks Foundation as part of a PlanItGreen initiative and funded by a grant from Communityworks.

All Heads in HelmetsThe Parks Foundation is partnering with the River Forest Park District and the River Forest Police Department to encourage our children to wear their helmets. The Parks Foundation annually distributes over 100 helmets to River Forest children at the Clear Sky Festival held in August. As part of the give-a-way, the helmets are properly fitted by a Police Officer, the child’s bicycle is registered, and the child will complete an education course on bicycle safety.

Bocce Pro AmOur first Annual Bocce Pro Am Fundraiser was held this past June at the booce ball courts in Memorial Parkway.
