3IMPORTANT NOTICES & THE COMMITTEE

IMPORTANT C.H.V.R.S. INFORMATION

All NEW members who have joined the F.O.C.C. and paid their club membership and wish to register their vehicle(s) on the Conditional Historic Vehicle Registration Scheme, ARE NOT required to provide a Statutory Declaration form.

The Statutory Declaration form is only required after the financial member has had the vehicle(s) on the C.H.V.R.S. in the second financial year.

Also, multiple vehicles can be put on the one Statutory Declaration form provided they are on the C.H.V.R.S.

Any other vehicle(s) that the member may own and noted on their membership form, is not required to be placed on the Statutory Declaration form.

Trade Plates

Yes trade plates can be used on any vehicle that is unregistered (such as historic vehicles) provided the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition. For left hand drive vehicles and street rod vehicles, trade plates can only be used on unregistered vehicles that have passed a roadworthy inspection and been issued with an exemption certificate from the Road Traffic Act by our Vehicle Standards Unit, Regency Park. This is due to the left hand drive configuration for LHD vehicles and the non standard modifications for a street rod. This can be confirmed by requesting to sight a copy of the exemption certificate issued by DPTI, certifying the vehicle has been granted an exemption from the Road Traffic Act and can be registered for road use.

The use of trade plates on any unregistered vehicle can only be used for the purpose as outlined in the Motor Vehicles Regulations 2010 (see attached) and should only be used by for the purpose of the trade plate owners business requirements. Trade plates cannot be loaned out for any activities unless is its specified below and meets the trade plate owners business requirements, eg. test drive a vehicle after repairs.

And yes any person over 16 years of age or body corporate may enter into an agreement with Registrar to reserve/display a previously issued R&S series number plates provided the number has not been allocated to a registered vehicle for at least five years, did not have rights purchased between 1 Sept 1997 and 30 Nov 1998, and is not on issue as a personalised or custom plate.

For an “old” number plate from a wrecking yard, for example, if it hasn’t been allocated to a vehicle for more than 5 years, the previous owner didn’t buy rights on 1/09/1997-30/11/1998, and there is no personalised or custom plate with the same combination out there on issue, then it can be registered and allocated to any another vehicle.

4 THE PRESIDENTS CORNER

The cost of printing and sending out of Camtorque to the non-email equipped FOCC members and the requirement for FOCC members to attend 5 meetings or events in the FOCC membership year to be allowed to remain as a FOCC member in the following year has been occupying the mind of some of the FOCC committee members over the past month.

I get an email copy of the Camtorque from Jody and forward the email to Copyfax in Gawler. The operator there can generally produce the 72 copies required within four hours of receiving the email. I generally pick up the copies the same day or the second day after they are printed. Gill and I fold the copies, envelope the copies, use stick on address labels, use a self-inking return address stamp and do a bulk posting from Balaklava. That operation takes up to an hour at the most. $120.00 covers the cost per month of the copying, envelopes, stick on labels and bulk postage.

The club has around 240 paid up members and associates with approx. 200 $40.00 members and maybe 30 $20.00 associates. We also have some $2.00 associates.

Printing and postal costs for each month to have 72 Camtorques printed as an 8 page item, printed both sides, black and white, with a staple top left is approx. $120.00. The Camtorque is set up to be printed on A3 sheets and the printing as A3, folded and stapled is at a cost that is much higher than how the Camtorque is printed at present. The Camtorque works OK that way on A3 paper but it cannot be printed on A4 pages and stapled along the edge due to the closeness of the printing to the staples. I see no reason to get Jody to change the page set-up or how the Camtorque is now printed. The one staple makes the Camtorque easier to fold in three and put in a DL envelope.

The FOCC has approx. 200 members. I have not allowed for associates as only one Camtorque goes to the member. $120.00 times 12 months in the year divided by 200 members is equivalent to a cost of $7.20 per member.

PRESIDENTS

CORNERArticle Written By Gordon Cowley

The FOCC posts 70 Camtorques out to non-email members. $120.00 times 12 months in the year divided by 70 members is equivalent to a cost of $20.60 per member. The FOCC posts out 10 copies of Camtorque to Clubs and Companies.

A member pays $40.00 per year to be a member of the FOCC so the fees paid by the member covers the cost of Camtorque irrespective of the way that you wish to apportion the cost to print and send Camtorques.

The Camtorque is a necessary part of the operation of the FOCC. Camtorque is the only contact some members of the club have with the club. The only real problem with the Camtorque is that some members do not read any or all of it. We need to re-visit the FOCC membership application / renewal form and make a clear distinction between those who have an email address and can get their Camtorque that way and those who are not email equipped and need their Camtorque posted to them.

The following is part of the FOCC constitution and we are all required to comply with what is in the FOCC constitution.

6.1 Membership shall be open to any person who is interested in the furtherance of the objects of the Club and who at the time of his “acceptance for membership of the FOCC” is the owner of a Club Vehicle as defined in Parts 23.1 and 23.2 of the Constitution. His Club membership will only be renewed if he has attended five or more Club meetings or events in the previous Club year (unless special dispensation is given by the Executive Committee) and he still owns a Club Vehicle as defined in Parts 23.1 and 23.2 of the Constitution.

The membership has been regularly told of this requirement over the past few years and more recently that the FOCC would enforce part 6.1 for membership renewals in 2016.

As we have not tried to enforce this rule before we have not “tested it” in action and when I tried to do that the whole procedure became un-workable. The FOCC starts accepting re-newals from the October meeting and the CHVRS team and Treasurer attend the meeting nights in Oct, Nov and Dec from 7.00 PM to process memberships and CHVRS paperwork. The FOCC does that so that we can get through all the CHVRS paperwork that has to be finalised before 31 December 2015.

There may be members that have not met the requirement for five strikes when they do their yearly paperwork but may do so before the meeting in December. How are we supposed to work that out? Centrelink has a procedure where your history for 2014 affects your enablement in 2016, history in 2015 affects your enablement in 2017, etc., etc. More work and is it worth the effort?

There is anecdotal evidence that many members do not support the “five strikes or you are out” procedure detailed in the FOCC constitution and with the evidence that the procedure is un-workable the following words should be removed from Part 6.1 of the FOCC constitution, “he has attended five or more Club meetings or events in the previous Club year (unless special dispensation is given by the Executive Committee) and”.

The FOCC has been comfortably under the 200 number for members over the past few years. When the membership goes over the 200 number and the FOCC gets into the next insurance bracket the CAMS insurance fee goes up by $250.00. With the possible advent of “some form of conditional registration for vehicles modified outside the Code of Practice requirements” I would expect that the FOCC membership numbers will increase. Seven extra members will make up the extra insurance fee.

5ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

Hi everyone!

Good news! After two and a half months, the express approval system of twenty days for those who lost their houses during the Samson Flat fires has finally come through. I would like to see the Councils calendar as it is obviously different to the one hanging on my wall. Don’t cheer just yet as this is just the Planning Approval.

Still to go is the Engineering calculations, Construction certification, and then back to council for Building regulations approval and last but not least, Development approval. Wishful thinking that this process will be done by the end of this November with reality coming a sad second at March 2016.

Council question of the week: What are the Manufactures details for the proposed water tank?

Answer = Polycarbonate and Round!

Upgrade the progress from “Snail Pace” to “A Crawl”

The Shed Outbuilding

You guessed it, still at council but I am hopeful of a positive response in my letter box in the first week of October, [hay! That’s now] especially since I so deftly answered their question re the Water Storage.

The outbuilding guys (They still call them sheds) are ready and waiting to get started on putting the sheds up.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

Article Written By Lee Richardson

Should only take about 5 weeks they tell me. Really need to have a shed to power up and get some lights and security happening. Had some visitors at 4am last Saturday but don’t know what they were after but they got disturbed by my neighbour and took off. At that time of the morning their motives can only be bad.

So I may soon find out if concrete trucks can navigate my driveway. For those who took part in the Progressive dinner will appreciate that the Concrete companies are a little concerned that they may not get their trucks up the driveway. So far two companies have refused to deliver but I have come across one willing to give it a go. They have older trucks with Manual gears which are more capable than the new trucks (I am told). The driveway of concern is at a rise of 16 degrees and is 200metres long. If you lose traction and stop you will need a tow up the hill. For a cement truck even empty that is a 15 ton tow.

Car 1: The Galaxie Skyliner.

Managed to get the Gal ready for the Bay to Birdwood but only just.

Still got an exhaust leak and still have not fixed the heater but it will be a warm day so one of those problems will be ok. A loss of fuel gauge was found to be a leaking fuel tank sending unit float and please note that this is an aftermarket float and only 2 years old. I kept the original 56 year old one as a spare. Alas copper melts!

Top day for the Bay to Birdwood and I counted 22 FOCC Club vehicles taking part. Not too bad a run but a little slow and that caused some punishment to the brakes but the old girl made it without permanent injury.

The Motorfest event that the FOCC sponsored was on the following Monday and again some nice weather. Despite some background hiccups, everything went well and I believe the participants had a good time. Only the Galaxie lost its speedo and I have not found out why yet, could it be that dam plastic speedo drive gear again?

6 HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT ...

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin”. The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as household appliances, aluminium extrusions, drum hardware, and automobile and bicycle parts. Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard), to be powder coated using different methods

Properties of powder coating

Because powder coating does not have a liquid carrier, it can produce thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging, and powder coating produces minimal appearance differences between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces. Because no carrier fluid evaporates away, the coating process emits few volatile organic compounds (VOC). Finally, several powder colors can be applied before curing them all together, allowing color blending and bleed special effects in a single layer.

While it is relatively easy to apply thick coatings which cure to smooth, texture-free coating, it is not as easy to apply smooth thin films. As the film thickness is reduced, the film becomes more and more orange peeled in texture due to the particle size and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the powder.

Most powder coatings have a particle size in the range of 30 to 50 μm, a softening temperature Tg around 80 °C, a melting temperature around 150 °C, and are cured at around 200 °C.

POWDER COATING

For such powder coatings, film build-ups of greater than 50 μm may be required to obtain an acceptably smooth film. The surface texture which is considered desirable or acceptable depends on the end product. Many manufacturers actually prefer to have a certain degree of orange peel since it helps to hide metal defects that have occurred during manufacture, and the resulting coating is less prone to showing fingerprints.

Types of Powder Coating

There are two main categories of powder coating: thermosets and thermoplastics. The thermosetting variety incorporates a cross-linker into the formulation. When the powder is baked, it reacts with other chemical groups in the powder to polymerize, improving the performance properties. The thermoplastic variety does not undergo any additional actions during the baking process, but rather only flows out into the final coating.

The most common polymers used are polyester, polyurethane, polyester-epoxy (known as hybrid), straight epoxy (fusion bonded epoxy) and acrylics.

Powder Application Process

The most common way of applying the powder coating to metal objects is to spray the powder using an electrostatic gun, or corona gun.

The gun imparts a positive electric charge to the powder, which is then sprayed towards the grounded object by mechanical or compressed air spraying and then accelerated toward the workpiece by the powerful electrostatic charge.

There are a wide variety of spray nozzles available for use in electrostatic coating. The type of nozzle used will depend on the shape of the workpiece to be painted and the consistency of the paint. The object is then heated, and the powder melts into a uniform film, and is then cooled to form a hard coating.

It is also common to heat the metal first and then spray the powder onto the hot substrate. Preheating can help to achieve a more uniform finish but can also create other problems, such as runs caused by excess powder.

7ENGINE OIL BIBLE

How much do you value the engine in your car?

The life of your engine depends in no small part on the quality of the oil you put in it - oil is its lifeblood. People typically don’t pay much attention to their oil - oil is oil, right?

In the bad old days, maybe, but engine oil underwent something of a revolution in the 80’s and 90’s when hot hatches, 16-valve engines and turbos started to become popular. High compression engines and black death meant the days of one oil catering for everyone were over.

Take Castrol for example. They led the field for years with their GTX mineral oil. This was eventually surpassed by semi-synthetic and fully synthetic oils, including GTX2 and GTX3 Lightec. Those were surpassed by Formula SLX and most recently, Castrol GTX Magnatec.

All manufacturers have a similar broad spectrum of oils now. I just mention Castrol in particular as they’re my oil of choice.

What does my oil actually do?

Your engine oil performs many functions. It stops all the metal surfaces in your engine from grinding together and tearing themselves apart from friction, and it transfers heat away from the combustion cycle. Engine oil must also be able to hold in suspension all the nasty by-products of combustion like silica (silicon oxide) and acids. Finally, engine oil minimises the exposure to oxygen and thus oxidation at higher temperatures. It does all of these things under tremendous heat and pressure.

How do I read the ‘5W40’ Type Number?

As oils heat up, they generally get thinner. Single grade oils get too thin when hot for most modern engines which is where multigrade oil comes in.

The idea is simple - use science and physics to prevent the base oil from getting too thin when it gets hot. The number before the ‘W’ is the ‘cold’ viscosity rating of the oil, and the number after the ‘W’ is the ‘hot’ viscosity rating. So a 5W40 oil is one that behaves like a 5-rated single grade oil when cold, but doesn’t thin any more than a 40-rated single grade oil when hot. The lower the ‘winter’ number (hence the ‘W’), the easier the engine will turn over when starting in cold climates.

What the heck was ‘Black Death’?

Black Death first appeared in the early 80’s when a sticky black substance was found to be the cause of many engine seizures in Europe. It was extremely frustrating for vehicle owners because dealers and mechanics had no idea what was going on. Black Death just wasn’t covered under insurance - if your engine had it, you paid to fix it yourself. Many engines were affected but Ford and Vauxhall (GM) suffered the most. Faster roads, higher under-hood temperatures, tighter engineering tolerances and overworked engine oils turned out to be contributors to the problem. The oils just couldn’t handle it and changed their chemical makeup under pressure into a sort of tar-like glue. This blocked all the oil channels in the engines, starved them of lubrication and caused them to seize. I don’t recommend this but you can reproduce the effect with a frying pan, cooking oil and a blowtorch. The cooking oil will heat up far quicker than it’s designed to and will turn to a sticky black tar in your pan. Either that or it will set fire to your kitchen, which is why I said “don’t do this”.

Anyway, burning kitchens aside, Black Death was the catalyst for the production of newer higher quality oils, many of them man-made rather than mineral-based.

Black Death for the 21st century: sludge

There’s a snappy new moniker for Black Death now: sludge. The cause is the same as Black Death and it seems to be regardless of maintenance or mileage. The chemical compounds in engine oils break down over time due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures and poor maintenance habits. When the oil oxidises, the additives separate from it and begin to chemically break down and solidify, leading to the baked-on oil deposits turning gelatinous, like black yoghurt. What doesn’t help is that due to packaging, modern engines have smaller sumps than their older counterparts, and so hold less oil. This lower volume of oil can’t hold as much crap (for want of a better word) and that can lead to earlier chemical breakdown.

The most common factor in sludge buildup is a combination of mineral oils, a lack of maintenance by the car owner and harsh driving conditions. However, a 2005 Consumer Reports article discovered that some engines from Audi, Chrysler, Saab, Toyota, and Volkswagen appear prone to sludge almost no matter how often the oil is changed.

8 BAY TO BIRDWOOD 2015 REPORT

BAY TO BIRDWOODOn a bright, beautiful Adelaide spring day out they came, chrome sparkling,

bodywork gleaming as they formed a procession of classic cars from the beach

to the Hills.

It was a car lovers’ delight as Holdens, Fords, Chevrolets, Cadillacs, Corvettes,

Mustangs, MGAs, Rovers, MGBs, and Kombis ruled the streets. There were

trucks and fire engines, motorbikes and minis, all making the 70km trek from

West Beach to Birdwood.

All up, this year’s edition of the Bay to Birdwood Classic, which covered makes

and models from 1956 to 1978, drew a record 1750 entries, with a crowd of

11,000 turning up to cheer on the participants, up from 8000 last year.

Even though the cars were old, not all the participants were, with many children

and young people spotted in the cars and on the roadside waving and cheering

the cars along.

Victorians Matthew and Kristi Lambert dressed in the era and drove all the way

from Melbourne in their 1956 green Hillman Minx. The couple said they loved

the atmosphere, the enthusiasm of the public and plan to promote it among

their friends.

The Concours d’Elegance competition which judges the best car and outfits was

won by Mark and Julia Kraulis and their children Amber, 3, and Chloe, 5, who

drove in their 1956 Chevrolet.

Next year’s Bay to Birdwood will be for cars made before 1956.

22 FOCC members attended the run with their classics on the day, well done!

For Sale: 1967 ZA Fairlane

It starts but cannot be driven as the brakes need replacing.

It is white with green interior and has a 351 Cleveland under the bonnet. The chrome work and body is very tidy but as I bought this as a project I had already started to strip it down. I have taken all the seats out and carpet, removed the door seals but I have kept everything I

Editors Pick Of The Month

FOR THE LOVE OF CARS

Phil Glenister and internationally renowned car designer Ant Anstead are on a mission to find and restore six unsung but heroic British cars. These cars are everyday classics.

They’re the cars our dads drove, cars that we loved as kids, cars that make us smile. They might not be super cars but they are national treasures and they desperately need saving.

Having rescued them from barns and lockups Ant will undertake the ultimate bare metal restorations on each car: the Ford Escort Mexico, Land Rover Series 1, Mini Cooper, MGTC, DeLorean and Triumph Stag. While Ant is ‘on the spanners’, Phil will meet the people who are ‘married’ to their motors.

For these people their car is a member of the family. He’ll also discover the touching, funny and often hard to believe stories that make each of these cars more than just metal and rubber.

A CORTINA OF COURSE

Article Written By Graham Farell

Have just picked up our latest addition to our Ford family from Kadina.

A nice example of a 1978 TE Ford Cortina Ghia sedan with the 4.1 litre Crossflow coupled to a 3 speed auto and LSD diff.

This is an incomplete project with just a few minor details for completion. The major mechanical , body and paint have all been completed. Started out as a white Cortina and changed to an orange color which was available in the Cortina range of the time.

A smooth ride soon to be seen on club runs!

14 PROGRESSIVE DINNER REPORT

Weather turned out perfect for the Progressive Dinner cruise.

Route to the 1st course had the car convoy cruise north on the expressway overpass later joining the northern expressway.

Off at Angle Vale, down Dalkeith road to Main North Road left then right up through Uleybury,

Past a very spectacular Graveyard of old army blitzes, tractors, cranes, trucks and cars etc.

Onward from Gawler one Tree Hill Road to up Kersbrook Road left at the Forest then left up Lee’s Lane.

Lee’s Lane was a scary dangerous exciting roller coaster track with two surprises at the end; the first was driving “under” the boom off a large excavator entailing the bucket one side and the excavator the other.

The second surprise was that there was NO HOUSE as it was burnt down in the last bushfire.

Club Gazebo’s were set up for “High Tea with Nature” amongst the Blackened Gum Trees ,

Burnt buckled sheets of iron, burnt out truck, melted motors etc.

High tea consisted off: mini cakes, slices, sandwiches and mini quiches, tea, coffee and soft drinks. We had a game of pass the parcel and then helped pack up ready to continue on.

Even though Irene and Lee are the busiest couple in the club this year, they still made time and effort to prepare and welcome the Club into what was once their home.

After a very pleasant interesting relaxing first course we gathered and convoyed back under the “boom” through Lenswood, Woodside, Balhannah, Verdun, Mt Barker Road, River Road and finally cruise into Mylor.

PROGRESSIVE DINNER REPORT

Article Written By Cathy & Clinton Jacobs

Surprise, surprise no house but arriving at the oval for 2nd course Soups and French sticks in the Club Shed.

Paul and Gloria had Soup, Soup and Soup so if Soup wasn’t your fancy the oval had plenty of Grass to chew on. Cathy had some Quiz’s and prizes to past the time, then a community clean up plus pack away of tables and chairs allowing all of us to be ready for the last house.

The next cruise took us up the back of Mylor through Longwood into the back of Stirling onto the freeway, detour off down and around Eagle on the Hill scenic Drive, Devil’s Elbow onto freeway again, tollgate, Portrush Road zig and zag finishing at Brooker Street Glenunga.

The last stop was the third and fourth course hosted by Kevin and Eileen this time we found a house. After settling in a cozy out door indoor B.B.Q. area the members mingled while Dinning on Shaslicks, snags, rissoles, staketts and salad and potato bake.

Later there were deserts consisting of: trifles’, small Caramel Cream Tarts and Apple Crumble and any cakes or Slices left over from High Tea.

Door Prizes: everyone received a lucky door Raffle Tickets, lots of prizes, Navigation sheet winners, laughter and chatter combined with a lovely cozy atmosphere made it a great night.

Kevin and Eileen did a lot of cooking before and on the night along with help from Steve.

There were 17 cars all up, 35 people and 3 children.

We would like to thank everyone for participating on the day and thank those hosts for all their time and effort we really appreciate the effort.

GOOD WEATHER – GOOD COMPANY – GOOD FOOD

Cathy and Clinton.
