Choose your favorite fabric? The initial reactions to Luke Haynes’ supply list for his workshop last month was mostly puzzlement. Bring your favorite fabric plus two coordinating fabrics - one light and one dark. (First, how does a quilter choose ONE favorite fabric? It would be easier to choose a favorite child.) The instructions at the beginning of the workshop didn’t seem to clarify anything. We were told to take our fabric and make different blocks. Huh? Luke was a delightful speaker who incorporated his art background into amazing quilts that going

into a class with so little direction seemed somewhat intimidating. We went back to our sewing stations, conferring and sharing with each other, still not sure what to do, but relaxing and letting our creativity flow. The results were outstanding! By approaching the block making from the standpoint of letting the fabric dictate the terms without being locked into a certain predetermined pattern, we all ended up with interesting blocks, sharing ideas that broadened our perspective. It was one of the most unique approaches to quilt-making and quite fun! Patricia Beaver This month’s (Nov. 9) speaker is a serendipitous treat! Due to a last minute cancelation, Cindy, An, Jackie and Susan spent hours getting a speaker (on top of the creative energy put into Panelmania and featuring Fabricologists last month). Humorous Patricia Beaver will be showing us her trunk show of quilts while regaling us with tales of her odyssey. Humor and an abundance of quilts! What more could one ask for in a program? Tina has put a lot of work into preparation for our November Loving Hands Workshop. (Nov. 12) Love to see a lot of you there! It will be fun and relaxing to sew receiving blankets and a great way to use a lot of the flannel that’s been donated. Creative clutter is better that idle neatness. Happy Quilting, Colleen Shier

We are excited about the variety of topics that the quilt experts will be offering to our guild. We would be delighted if members take a few minutes to get familiar with the presenters and workshops that they are interested in attending. All quilters, new through experienced, are encouraged to be a part of the learning and the camaraderie that each workshop brings. Starting with the November General Guild Meeting, members can secure their spots at the workshops and take part in a special pricing package. Here is how it works: ★Pay in advance for one workshop: receive two free fat quarters. ★Pay in advance for four workshops: receive eight free fat quarters and receive a FREE fifth workshop (a $35 value). A new policy being implemented beginning 2017, requires members to pay at the time of signing up for a workshop. Please understand that this is necessary to insure that our workshops are full and are not operating at a significant loss to the Guild. So read up, grab your check book, stop at the ATM for cash, and come on down to the Workshop table during General meetings beginning in November. You can also register on-line with BookWhen at our website using a credit card. Take advantage of the savings awaiting you. Be a part of the fun. Who doesn’t like a great deal?!

GQG Quilt Show 2017

“Ripple Effect”

Hello, Everyone! We’ve already made a lot of progress on Quilt Show 2017. The Opportunity Quilt design and the show logo were shared with you at the October meeting. Kits will be available soon and we hope to have all kits distributed by the November meeting. Using your completed blocks, assembly will begin in December. Luke Haynes is our Featured Artist, along with special exhibits and award-winning local artist displays. Christa Walters and Andi Perejda will teach classes and HandiQuilter will also provide their famous classes for us. This show will be fantastic! Last month, an announcement was made regarding a change in the quilt entry procedure. Here are the facts which led to this decision. During the Category meeting, our team reviewed statistics from previous shows in an effort to ensure fair quilt competition. We found non-members had entered quilts which had previously won at Road and other large shows, providing them an unfair advantage over other entrants. We also reviewed the bottom line effects of restricting non-member entries. Our 2015 records show that over 80% of the income from non-member entry fees was paid out in elevated awards. These reasons indicated that restriction of competitive categories to GQG members would preserve the integrity of our judging team and allow our members to compete on an equal basis. While non-members can no longer compete, their work may be displayed, allowing them the opportunity to share their quilts and enhance the show. Alternatively, non-members are welcome to join our guild and continue competing in our show. While we may lose a few non-member entries, the vast majority will continue to participate in our show. This will be a highly publicized event and beneficial for all involved. The specific details of the final judging categories will be decided at the next Committee Meeting on Wednesday, November 16 at WAC at 6:30pm. If you wish to be a part of the planning for this show, please join us. The following represents a summary of the proposed changes:

• Competitive categories will be limited to GQG Members only. • Members may enter quilts completed since 2013. • Members may enter up to five (5) quilts for judging, 1 each into 5 different categories, plus two

(2) more for display only. • Quilts made by more than one person will be placed into Two-Person or Group categories. • Master Quilters ("MQ") may enter any category. If a MQ wins first place in a single-person

category, the MQ will be awarded a special Award of Excellence ribbon, allowing the next winner to receive the regular First Place ribbon.

Your Show Chairs, Sandy, Beth and Tina

Loving Hands After Dark

On the evening of Tuesday, October 4th, we tried something new – an evening work session for Loving Hands. We didn’t know if it would work but wanted to try something different and thought it could cater to those members who may not be able to make it to a Loving Hands daytime session. Well, it was a success! We had over 25 attendees who made tumbler block quilts and dined on tacos and tiramisu. There were even virgin margaritas to quench the thirst of the busy quilters. A wonderful – and productive – time was had by all. All the food and beverages for the evening were donated by those who attended. A special thanks to Kathi Wilson and Cindy Abrams who spearheaded the event.

Panelmania Rx Report Twenty-six (26!) new “species” of panel quilts were handed over to the Panel Doctors during the October meeting. The “Panelogists” studied and examined the new “specimens” and declared that every one of them represented a unique and beautiful example of the creativity, workmanship, and lovingly generous spirit evident in Guild members who crafted and donated them. Many thanks go out to the numerous quilters who have participated during the first two months of Panelmania. Still thinking about joining the challenge? Agonizing over a quilting design? Almost finished with the binding? Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s not too late! Remember, the rules are simple: Just make a finished quilt using all or part of a panel and bring it to the November meeting. A drawing for valuable prizes will occur during the December General Meeting for those who have been a part of this unique challenge. If you are new to the Guild, have been away for the summer or just discovered panels of your own buried in the Mesozoic layer of your stash and want more details, please see the GQG website for more detailed information or check the September and October Newsletters.

Loving Hands Activities At the October meeting, Cathy McNassor turned in a quilt top. Another six quilts were turned in for binding after being nicely quilted by Judy Hine, Joliene Blanchard and Judy Sellers. And 16 completed quilts were turned in: completed by Ann Bagne, Peggy Barbar, Leah Bessey, Mary Bolas, Sandy Bradfield, Crystal Dudley, Denise Koch, Kathy Fogel, Nan Maples, Anne Raycraft and former guild member, Barbara Stewart. Additionally, another 26 completed quilts were turned in as part of the Panelmania Project. In the past month, Loving Hands received donated fabric from Crystal Dudley, Harriet Sartinsky and Kathy Fogel. And once again, we have received a sizable fabric donation from Candy’s Quiltworks. We are very thankful for all these generous donations of beautiful fabric. A special Loving Hands workshop will be held on Saturday, November 12th. This will be a sew-in where we use the flannel fabric in the Loving Hands stash to make receiving blankets (using a simple pattern) to donate to a birthing clinic in rural Kenya. If you have flannel yardage in your stash that you do not plan to use, please consider donating it for this event. And just a reminder that Loving Hands now meets the third Friday of the month. So in November, the regular work session will be on Friday, November 18th. We hope to see you there!

Holiday Sparkle Balls for December

7

This is for a Guild Block Exchange at our December 14th, 2016 meeting. We need at least 20 participants for this to succeed, so please plan to join the fun. Here's how it works: Make 20 Holiday Ball Blocks. Save 1 of the 20 blocks for your quilt. Put 19 blocks in a zip lock bag with your name on the bag and bring it to the December meeting. Turn in the bag AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE. At the end of the meeting you will receive your bag back with 19 different holiday ball blocks. Holiday Sparkle Ball Construction: Use scant 1/4" seams (scant just means 1-2 thread widths shy of 1/4) Please trim threads and press as you go Make your 20 balls all the same or different, use up your stash! Balls: Please use 3 different Christmas colors and/ or Christmas prints Background: Please use white or white on white Ball Hanger: Please use grey or silver For each ball cut these strips: 2@ 2 1/2" X 7" (Color #1 top & bottom of ball) 2@ 1 1/2" X 711 (Color #2 center top & center bottom of ball) 1@ 1" X 7" (Color #3 narrow center strip) For background cut: 4@ 2 -1/2” X 2 1/2" (corners of snowballs) 2@ 1 1/2 “ X 3 1/2" (top of ball) For hanger cut: 1 @ 1" X 1 1/2" (hanger) Sewing steps: 1. Sew 5 ball strips together to make a 7” X 7” unit. This will become the snowball shape. 2. Sew 4 corners to the 7” x 7” unit to make a snowball shape using the 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" background squares. 3. Sew hanger piece to center of the 2 background pieces that are 1 1/2" X 3 1/2". This makes a strip a bit longer than the ball so when you center the hanger you have a bit of "wiggle" room. 4. Sew hanger unit to top of snowball, trim if necessary to make a block 7” X 8" and you will have a Holiday Sparkle Ball. Finished ball hanger attached snowball unit/shape

Patricia Beaver will be the speaker in November and we will be sharing her with the Santa Clarita guild who will be allowing our members to attend their workshop at the same price as their members. The proposed schedule for Programs and Workshops was presented. There was a discussion on how to increase the number of paid attendees for our workshops. The plan agreed to is that if you sign up and pay for four classes at one time, you will be given a fifth class free. Workshops/Carlos: In collaboration with Programs, a list of speakers and workshops for 2017 will be produced in November for information and in order to encourage participation in the coming year. Membership/Spinn: It is hoped that in the future we will be able to use BookWhen for membership renewals as well as new member sign-ups . Tim will give a report at the Guild meeting regarding how many members paid for receiving the newsletter and also for payment of opportunity quilt tickets. Fundraising/Bradfield: The first meeting of the Quilt Show Committee was very productive. Members are encouraged to work in small teams to fill Committee positions and many positions have already been filled with willing teams. The design for the Opportunity Quilt was presented and a pleasing color way decided. Work on the quilt will begin soon. Teacher contracts are completed. Kingdom Sewing, a long time vendor and GQG Show supporter, is sponsoring Handi Quilter who will then provide instructors and machines for classes. Loving Hands/Curran: The quarterly report showed a huge increase in finished quilts that were received, due in part to the 49 quilts that were part of Panelmania. The Loving Hands After Dark Taco Tuesday event was a huge success with 24 members attending. Consensus was to offer more events like it. Candy’s Quiltworks is to be thanked for still more fabric donations. The November Loving Hands Saturday event will be making flannel receiving blankets for Project Karibu. IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1. BookWhen – The new program is up and running, but we still need to do our testing to see if it works for us. 2. 501(c)3 Update – Colleen is in touch with someone from SCCQG that can possibly help guide us. 3. Opportunity Drawing Baskets – Will be explored further. V. NEW BUSINESS 1. Bookcase to hold Guild Library – A suggestion was made that the Guild purchase a locking bookcase that will be housed at the WAC facility and used to store Guild Library Books. Books could then be checked out by GQG members on Mondays. Sandy Bradfield will look for a suitable bookcase. The WAC Board has already given their approval. 2. The new Quilt ‘n’ Things will have their grand opening on Saturday October 8, 2016. 3. Ideas for increasing membership - Bookmarks allowing the bearer to attend one GQG Guild Meeting free of charge will be handed out at Quilt ‘n’ Things. Additionally a survey to be given to new members was suggested. 4. Reminder - Parking in the lot at WAC is limited to 2 cars deep. Anything else is a violation of fire safety regulations. 5. December Holiday Pot Luck - A temporary hospitality team headed up by Mary Ann Kroening and Alice Turner was approved for the Holiday Pot Luck. 6. Announcement – The Sparkle Ball pattern for the Holiday Party Block Exchange will be available at the October meeting. Kathi Wilson will show an example of a quilt using the exchange blocks. VI. A motion was made to adjourn and the meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. Sharon Bishop, Recording Secretary

Plans for the Holiday Pot Luck in December include the culmination of the Panelmania Challenge with a grand prize drawing, the Nestle Choir, and a Block Exchange headed up by Kathi Wilson. The pattern is available and will also be in the Newsletter. Make 20 blocks, keep one block, turn in the rest, and at the end of the evening you will receive back 19 different blocks. Future programs were discussed and an announcement made that in the future you must pay for your class when signing up and if you sign up and pay for four classes at once, you will receive a fifth class for free. Workshops/Carlos: There are still some openings for the workshop with Luke Haynes. The November workshop will be in Santa Clarita since we will be sharing the November Speaker, Patricia Beaver, with their guild. Membership/Spinn: Four guests and a new affiliate, Dave’s Make It Sew, were welcomed. Renewals are still coming in however this meeting is the last chance to be included in the upcoming Roster. Fundraising/Bradfield: We have teachers, a decorator, the theme “Ripple Effect” and a design for the Opportunity Quilt. The quilt pattern selected reflects the bridge between traditional and modern quilts. The next committee meeting will be November 16 and kits will be cut and assembled for distribution. There are still a few committee positions waiting to be filled. Nan Maples, Quilt Acquisition, announced that in an effort to ensure fair quilt competition for our members, changes have been made in the acquisition plans for the 2017 Show. In recent years, non-members entered quilts which had previously won at Road and other large shows giving them an advantage over other entrants. For this reason, competitive categories will be restricted to GQG members, allowing our members to compete on an equal basis. Loving Hands/Curran: The recent Loving Hands After Dark event was a huge success with 25 members participating in sewing pre-cut tumbler blocks. Some very nice finished quilts were shown. In addition to the regular Loving Hands meetings which, beginning in October, will be on the third Friday each month, there is a Saturday edition scheduled for November 12, where we will be making flannel receiving blankets for Project Karibu. Directions for the blankets are in the newsletter. Thank you to everyone participating in Loving Hands activities and making Loving Hands a success. Block of the Month/Edwards: There was good participation in the new program with enough for two winners. Susan showed an example of a quilt top that can be made using next month’s block which features fall fabrics. V. Show and Tell Among the many beautiful quilts shown were some made in the recent workshop with Kathy Pellman. VI. Program The membership enjoyed a program by contemporary quilt artist Luke Haynes. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. Sharon Bishop, Recording Secretary

Luke Haynes Workshop Review The well regarded art- and architecturally-trained Luke Haynes was our teacher for the Workshop on Saturday, October 15th. “Subverting the traditional quilting form by integrating modern concepts, his art transforms the comfortably familiar into the visually evocative.” So we brought our favorite fabrics and proceeded to cut them up. Then sewed the pieces back together and turned them into blocks which expressed our interpretation of different designs. Adding strips of different fabrics, lights, darks, and samples of fabric from his personal line of fabric, we made blocks that contained stripes, flowers, dots, and various figures and shapes, adding curves, triangles and circles, to express what we considered to be our interpretation of non-traditional forms and maybe even our own modern concepts. We discovered what an array of hidden talent we have within ourselves. It was a very fun and productive class attended by Kathy Fogel, Susan Edwards, Alice Smith, An Burgess, Tina Curran, Tim Spinn, Sandy Bradfield, Colleen Shier, Homa Asef, Louise Rupp and Jackie Carlos. November Workshop: Flannel Receiving Blankets for Loving Hands

A little back story. In the guild’s off-site storage, we have a lot of flannel and I’m told not many members like to quilt with flannel. We have flannel that we are basically warehousing. There’s a need for flannel receiving blankets in Africa to encourage women to have safer birth experiences -- and to welcome their babies into the world. So on Saturday, November 12th, we invite you to join us at the WAC for a day of making flannel receiving blankets. It’s a very simple process and we’ll provide all the flannel. We ask you only to bring your sewing machine and some neutral thread. And of course if anyone has flannel they are not using and would like to donate to this effort that would be wonderful. Together, ideally we could make 50 or more receiving blankets for Operation Karibu that day. There is no cost to participate. And we’ll have the folks that run the clinics here in L.A. at the WAC during the day to share a short presentation on what they do and the community that we will be helping. And everyone will go home not only with the knowledge of how to make receiving blankets for the babies in their life but also that they helped the world a bit that day. We hope you’ll join us.
