God’s PioneerA. J. Tomlinson

With the advent of the twentieth century has come an age unparalleled and almost unimagined in preceeding age of time. Man has achieved beyond his greatest expectations. The pioneers of the past in the diverse areas of life envisioned andhoped for an age comparable to our age but who can say they truly believed it would come?

The spiritual pioneer whom this is about in his own handwriting, did envision, did hope, and most of all, did truly believethe day would come when God’s people, the worlds around, would seek to find spiritual unity within the Church of Godof the Bible. Today, with the twentieth century a little more than half spent, an urgent and increasingly demanding cryhas arisen throughout Christendom–a cry for UNITY! Religious leaders of many theologies urge the universalacceptance of one God...and one Church for all. In truth, the present trend is toward theoretical unity. But because hebelieved the day would come when the magistracy of churches and the hearts of men alike would seek spiritual unity, A.J. Tomlinson sought and found the Church of God in the opening years of this, the twentieth century.

GOD’S TWENTIETH CENTURY PIONEER presents a compilation of writings of the late A. J. Tomlinson, formerGeneral Overseer of the Church of God of Prophecy. Of him it has been said, “It seemed that every drop of blood in hisveins, every pulsation of his heart and every fiber of his being was dedicated to God and His Church!” This unshakablededication led A. J. Tomlinson through conflict to great victories, through opposition to glorious achievements.

A. J. Tomlinson was reared to manhood in the state of Indiana during an era when America was experiencing a greatspiritual awakening. He was not converted, however, until shortly after his marriage to Mary Jane Taylor in 1889, at theage of twenty-three. He turned almost immediately to the avid study of the Word of God. As a result of his study, agenuine crisis arose in his life–what church to join? A thorough search of the Scriptures led him ultimately to theconviction that there existed but one Church in the sight of God, the Bible Church, and he determined to find it.

A. J. Tomlinson’s search led him from Indiana to the wilderness counties of western North Carolina. There he served asan agent for the American Bible Society and as a minister of the Gospel, filling pulpits of various congregations uponinvitation. Eventually, he met to worship with a small group of people in Cherokee County, North Carolina, who calledthemselves, “The Holiness Church at Camp Creek.” Impressed with their desire to follow the precepts of the Bible,rightly divided, using the New Testament as their only rule of faith and practice, A. J. Tomlinson felt his search wasended. On June 13, 1903, after an early morning prayer, this spiritual pioneer spoke his heartfelt conviction to hisChristian brothers and sisters who unanimously consented to set in motion the functioning of the church of God of theBible. Little did the group realize how significantly this inspired act corresponded with Isaiah’s prophecy concerning theChurch “Arise, shine; for they light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:1).

The “glory of the Lord” hovered resolutely over the Church as each year brought new proof of growth. In the year 1910,the Church elected to choose a general overseer for the various established congregations. A. J. Tomlinson was chosen. Re-elected yearly until 1914, he was then chosen permanently to fill this position in the Church, which he did until hisdeath on October 2, 1943.

During the years in which the late A. J. Tomlinson served as general overseer of the Church of God of Prophecy, he wasever busily engaged in the propagation of the Gospel through the medium of mighty words–spoken and written. Thesewritings are in a series of books to feature articles of spiritual pertinence written by this powerful man of God in theinterim of his general overseership. No more appropriate decade could be found for its publication than this. Theecclesiastical world cries for UNITY. “One God, one faith, one mind, and one Church for all!” was the underlying themewhich consistently propelled the life work of A. J. Tomlinson, God’s Twentieth Century Pioneer!

In the next few Updates we will be sharing some of these writings of Brother Tomlinson and the history of the Church ofGod of Prophecy. Christian Heroes Are NeededWe Must Win In This Great Struggle for the Right

TO BE WEAK NOW MEANS TO BE LED ASTRAY BY EVIL FORCES

“O, Lord God Almighty, the Father of Thy beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, by whom we have received theknowledge of Thee, the God of angels and powers , and of every creature, and of the whole race of righteous who livebefore Thee, I give Thee thanks that Thou hast counted me worthy of this day and this hour, that I should have a part inthe number of Thy martyrs, in the cup of Thy Christ, to the resurrection of eternal life, both of soul and body, through theincorruption imparted by the Holy Ghost. Among whom may I be accepted this day before Thee as a fat and acceptablesacrifice, according as Thou, the ever-truthful God, hast foreordained, hast revealed before hand to me, and now hasfulfilled. Wherefore also I praise Thee for all things, I bless Thee, I glorify Thee, along with the everlasting and heavenlyJesus Christ, Thy beloved Son, with whom, to Thee, and the Holy Ghost, be glory both now and to all coming ages. Amen.”

This was the prayer of our beloved and sainted father, Polycarp, after he was bound to the stake, surrounded by wood andfagots, just before the funeral pile was set on fire which was to burn him in martyrdom for his invincible faith and truth inJesus Christ. He had been faithful in life, now he wanted to be faithful unto death. Others had been martyred in Smyrnaand now he was the twelfth. He had been a hero in life and now he is to be a hero in death. He had boldly declaredhimself a Christian in the face of threats of punishment. When the proconsul threatened him with wild beasts to devourhim if he did not repent he urged him to “call them then, for we are not accustomed to repent of what is good in order toadopt that which is evil; and it is well for me to be changed from what is evil to what is righteous.” But again theproconsul said to him, “I will cause thee to be consumed by fire, seeing thou despiseth the wild beasts, if thou will notrepent.” But Polycarp said, “Thou threatenest me with fire which burneth for an hour, and after a little is extinguished,but are ignorant of the fire of the coming judgment and of eternal punishment, reserved for the ungodly. But why tarriestthou? Bring forth what thou wilt.”

While he spoke these and many other like things, he was filled with confidence and joy, and his countenance was full ofgrace, so that not merely did it not fall as if troubled by the things said to him, but, on the contrary, the proconsul wasastonished and sent his herald to proclaim in the midst of the people, “Polycarp has confessed that he is a Christian.” This proclamation having been made by the herald, the whole multitude both of the heathen and Jews who dwelt inSmyrna, cried out with uncontrollable fury and in a loud voice, “This is the teacher of Asia, the father of the Christians,and the overthrower of our gods, he who has been teaching many not to sacrifice or to worship the gods.” When themultitude could not get the wild beasts turned upon him then they cried out with one consent that Polycarp should beburnt alive.

When all was ready and Polycarp had pronounced his amen after his prayer, those who were appointed for the purposekindled the fire. And as the flame blazed forth with great fury, those to whom it was given to witness it, beheld a greatmiracle, and were preserved that they might report to others what then took place. This is so wonderful that I give thedescription in the language of the historian.

“For the fire, shaping itself into the form of an arch, like the sail of a ship when filled with wind, encompassed as by acircle the body of the martyr, and he appeared within not like flesh which is burnt, but as bread that is baked, or as goldand silver glowing in a furnace. Moreover, we perceived such a sweet odor coming from the pile, as if frankincense orsome such precious spices had been smoking there. At length, when those wicked men perceived that his body could notbe consumed by the fire, they commanded an executioner to go near and pierce him through with a dagger. And on doingthis, there came forth a dove, and a great quantity of blood, so that the fire was extinguished; and all the people wonderedthat there should be such a difference between the unbelievers and the elect, of whom this most noble Polycarp was one.”

God is the same God that He was in the days of the early Church when Polycarp was Bishop of Smyrna. Christian heroesare as necessary now as then. They were beginning to build upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, we are tocontinue the work and finish it up ready for presentation to Jesus Christ when He comes for the Church without spot orwrinkle. The question arises, Will we be as faithful as the early fathers? Will we be as loyal and heroic when thedifficulties arise and the persecutions come thicker and harder? But there should be no question for we must! Somebodywill, even if we should weaken, but by the grace of God we will not weaken, we will endure the suffering, glory in thecross, scale the heights of heroism, withstand the violence of the fiery spirit that is set to seduce God’s children and lead

them astray and deceive them until they will be ruined forever. Some may be caught now. The web may be wovenaround them and the deadening chloroform of deception may have already gotten in it work, but those who are yet freeshould lift up their heads, throw up breastworks of protection, and rise above every artifice of the devil by declaringwholly and unflinchingly for truth, righteousness, and freedom as boldly and bravely as did our forefather Polycarp.

We are now in the last days that are to try the metal in every man to prove what sort it is. If a man can be seduced at allhe will be seduced now. Jude’s certain men are getting in their deadly work in all the world. False Christs and falseprophets are now on their job just like Jesus said they would come. Many are showing signs and wonders and speakinggreat swelling words to seduce all who are not so fixed and settled that they can bear the name of the elect. All but theelect will be seduced and driven into strong delusion and such a halter placed upon them that they will never get looseany more. Evil men and seducers are now waxing worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived, just like Paulprophesied. Many of those who have been our own people are now in the gall of bitterness because they were not able tostand out against seducing spirits. But all who have been able to stem the tide and ride the waves of doubts and fears arehigher in spirituality and fuller of God-given courage and boldness than ever before.

Who would not want to be a hero now? Who would not want to heed the clarion call by the great Apostle Paul when hesaid, “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13)? To be a weakling nowmeans to be seduced and led astray. To be discouraged now means to give up the very job that God called you into yearsago. To fall behind the main ranks now is to be captured by the advance guards of the enemy that are always picking upstragglers. I prophesy that some who have been good men will soon die and their bodies will be laid in the cold, coldgrave, all because they have become confused and have not been able to bravely breast the storm of battle arrayed againstthem.

It has been said that the best way to withstand the enemy in a defensive battle is to wage a strong offensive battle. Justmerely to try to live is to join the ranks of those who are strong and bold in their declamation of truth and right. Youmust really quit yourselves like men and be strong or be swallowed up by that spirit that is ready to overwhelm anddevour every weakling.

Paul commands to withdraw from proud people who will not consent to wholesome words and to the doctrine which isaccording to godliness. Such people are dangerous because they are possessed by a spirit of strife, envy, railings, evilsurmisings and suppose that gain is godliness. To withdraw from such people as a means of protection to keep fromfalling into the same snare. Paul also insists that the saints of God should turn away from people who are covetous,boastful, trucebreakers, false accusers, traitors, heady, and highminded, although they may have a form of godliness.

Indeed these are perilous times when men are going to be caught in the coils of deception and so strangled by the powersof flattery and otherwise that they will never escape. If I should fail in everything else I do not want to fail to inspirecourage and bravery in the soldiers now on the great battlefield against sin and deception. Have courage, my brothers,my sisters, we must win today in this great struggle for the right.

A story is told of one of the generals during the revolutionary war which is very impressive. The odds were against theAmerican forces and the time drew on for another battle. This general addressed his men early in the morning and said,“Boys, we must win today or Mollie Stark is a widow.” His gallantry and bravery in the battle caused his men to putforth all their strength. They ran into the fight with undaunted courage and the foe was vanquished and the brave generalwas not even wounded in battle, and his wife was not left a widow. Surely we can have the same kind of courage in thisrevolution which is of such vast importance just now.

Alton-Connecting Pointe:

November brought a big

change at Alton. We changed

our name to Connecting

Pointe. The church set forth

four lay minister: Vanessa

Brown, Jeramy Murphree,

Laura Stronge and Charlotte

Wiggins. Jeramy Murphree

was appointed as Associate

Pastor. Vanessa Brown was

appointed as Children’s Pastor.

There were lots of activities

and fun in December with

Christmas Mania and then our

Christmas program, “Scrooge

Presents Lights of Love”. The

Birmingham District had a

great time at Connecting

Pointe with Santa, lunch and

games. The New Year began with Pastor

Daniel and Laura Stronge and their family:

Andrew, Luke, Sam and Adeline giving the

church a dinner of thanks. It was a lovely

evening and the church appreciates our

pastor and family for their love, dedication

and spiritual leadership.

Browntown: Over the last six months, we

have had family days, youth nights with Eli

Lee, men’s breakfasts, baby dedication for

Saydee Catherine Lee, Couples Fiesta Night,

Singing with Ryan Watkins, Trunk or Treat,

Couples Thanksgiving dinner, Jesus’

birthday party, Christmas program and

watched War Room.

Chickasaw: A new member was added this

month. We welcome Betty Riggan to

Chickasaw. Wonderful fellowship is always

in the South! God bless everyone.

Cunningham Bridge: We want to thank

God for His blessings on us at Cunningham

Bridge. We had five to join the church

(Jimmy Proctor, Lenise Proctor, Jason Smith,

Rose Smith, Dan Edwards) and one to follow

in believers baptism. The Lord is so good to

us; we praise His holy name-JESUS!!

Gadsden-Living Waters: This month we

welcome Sister Amanda Heard as a new

covenant member of the Gadsden COGOP.

We praise God for this dear sister and her

son Deklyn.

Gordo: Everyone enjoyed a delicious

Sunday School Breakfast with all the

trimmings, including homemade biscuits by

Sister Ruby Pritchett. Lots of fellowship

with each other and devotional by Brother

James Lathon.

Greenpond: We welcomed the New Year

with great anticipation of what God is going

to do. Many participated in the twenty-one

day fast. Great things happen when we fast

and pray. There were thirty-nine in

attendance for our mother/son Valentine

Banquet.

Haleyville-Pathway: We have been in a

revival with Bill Easter and seen God move.

We saw 2 saved, 1 sanctified, 1 received the

Holy Ghost and 35 baptized in water. God

help us keep the fire going to spread from

Haleyville, Alabama to around the world in

God’s name. Amen.

Huntsville-Mastin Lake: Wanted to share

about our recent Serve Day. We have been

preaching and teaching for the last few

years about serving others as Christ through

the Body of Christ as a key to our

Christianity. Mastin Lake Church has a

strong tradition of some pioneers who have

reached out from the local church to our

community and city. However, the next

giant leap for our church was to do more

than fund a local mission project (outreach)

but give of our greatest resource-TIME.

Last fall our new youth pastors did a youth

serve day for first responders in our area.

They took the left over food to an area

know as “Tent City” in Huntsville. This

area is tents where the homeless of our city

live. We challenged the entire church to

participate in serving and saving lives both

time and money. After many gave and

sponsored backpacks of basic supplies, we

gathered on a Saturday for SERVE DAY.

We had over 50 people show up from all

ages to help pack bags, cook a meal and

whatever else they could do. They prayed

over each backpack and even the food.

Then at least 30 went out to personally

deliver the warm chili and the backpack of

supplies. As we come back for a MEAL

TO DISCUSS OUR DAYS EVENTS, IT

WAS POWERFUL AS

p e o p l e s h a r e d

emotionally and very

passionately how God

had changed them and

how blessed they were to

join in. This team is

already excitingly talking

about what and how we

can further help and

touch our city for Jesus.

At our 75 Anniversaryth

we declared “If God is

the God of this City, then

we must become the

Church of this city”.

Short Creek: We are

looking forward to a

wonderful year in the

Lord. God is blessing

with wonderful worship, fellowship of the

Saints, drawing closer to Him in prayer,

study of the Word, and receiving of the Word

from the pulpit. We enjoyed Family Night

and Seniors enjoyed lunch together. Six of

our youth attended the Winter Conference

and came back filled with the Spirit of God

and excited about the work of the Lord.

Thanks to all those who made this possible.

Tarrant: We started the month by

participating with our brothers and sisters

over the world in the 21 days of prayer and

fasting. Pastor Judy blessed the Presbyterian

Manor in a concert. We ended the month

with guest singer Pastor John Redmon of

Greater Mt. Zion, followed by a luncheon of

soups, and chili.

Winfield City Family: We thank God for

four souls being redeemed this month. We

had a great New Year’s watch night service.

We enjoyed God’s presence and over fifty

people visited and had communion together.

Later, we had breakfast together downstairs

after praying the old year out and the new

The Bible is written as a personal letter tro you. God speaks to you, ministers to your needs, and directsyou in the way you should go in His written Word. Hetells you what you should do and how you should live. It is a mistake to think we can hear clearly from Godwithout spending time in the Word. Knowing thewritten Word protects you from deception. Listeningfor God’s voice without being dedicated to spendingtime in the Word on a regular basis opens you up tohearing voices that are not from God. There may betimes when God speaks something to you that is outside

a specific chapter and verse of the Bible but it willalways be in agreement with His Word. Tonight, spendtime reading a portion of God’s personal letter to youand allow Him to speak to your heart. God’s Word is

one of the most precious gifts we have. Treasure it.

Tips For Abundant Life

Rest. It is March, the month for Spring

cleaning and raking the winter off our lawns

to prepare for the wonderful new growth and

beauty of the warmer seasons. Why, then,

am I sharing about rest? I recently

experienced one of those times where within

three days I heard the same topic covered in

three different places – from our ladies’

Bible Study on Thursday evening, my daily

devotion book on Saturday morning, and

then in a sermon recorded several weeks

earlier that I watched on Saturday. I pay

attention when that happens!

In the Lord. Matthew 11:28-29 is the

scripture I encountered in those three

experiences. We are invited to come to Jesus

for our rest and peace. You see, He knew we

would experience those times of weariness so

He already had a plan for fulfilling that need.

After having that time of resting in the Lord,

we are rejuvenated and prepared to continue

our service.

In the physical. Our bodies were created

with the need for rest. When we don’t get

the sleep our bodies require, then we are

unable to function at our best. Just as we

were all created unique and different in our

capabilities and strengths, our bodies are

different as well. I know people who are

completely rested with only five to six hours

of sleep each night. My body, on the other

hand, needs its full 8 hours. Find your

optimum and be sure you attain it.

In the mind. Doesn’t your mind just seem to

work overtime – thinking about all you have

to do, all those things you need to be

concerned about, how unhappy you are with

a certain situation, and on and on and on?!

Just give it a rest already, right?! Just as our

physical bodies need sufficient rest and

nourishment, our minds need to be fed the

positive, encouraging promises from the

Word of God on a regular basis so they can

rest from all the responsibility.

Give yourself a break and get the rest you

need. And then, seek every day for the

abundant life that only comes from God.

Dear Friends and Partners in missions,

We are so excited to share with

you some news from Siberia mission.

God is good all the time and we see His

hand every day. I just wanted to send

this brief note to let you know how

truly grateful we are for your generous

and faithful support of this ministry.

May God richly bless you!

We would like to begin with a

prayer need for our family and our

living arrangements. Couple days ago

our landlord has asked us to move out

in two weeks from the apartment that

we are renting. We don’t fully

understand the reason behind it but we

do see the devil is trying to machinate.

Right now we are searching for a place

to live but can’t find anything yet. We

need your prayer support! Please pray

for God to give us an apartment in a

safe neighborhood. Everything is in

His hands. Thank you!

Youth Ministry

In February we have started a

youth service on Sunday night. The

Lord has placed upon our hearts to start

serving the young people and to raise

them up in righteousness. As you

know, the youth is always hungry, both

spiritually and physically so we start

our services with fellowship and food,

than some sport activities. After that

we praise God together and release the

Word. We had 14 people during our

first service, and this last Sunday we

already had more than 40 people. It is

exiting to see how with every day more

and more young people come to God.

Praise and Worship Nights

The churchhas agreed to pray

for revival in Siberia every Friday. We

have decided to gather on Friday nights

to praise Jesus and ask for the rain upon

a dry and weary land. We are learning

how to worship, how to get a hold of

God. We believe that He will send His

fire!

Visiting Churches

Our churches are young in

Russia. On average they are 15 years

old. This is the time of formation and

building of the Kingdom of God. We

see our calling as helping young

ministers and multiplication of churches.

For the couple last months we have

visited 4 churches. We are asking for

you to pray for pastors and their

families. We are desperately in need of

laborers and we are praying for God to

raise up a generation that would have a

fire for ministry.

Our Family

We are thankful to God that He

has called our family to be a missionary

one. Since we are traveling a lot our

kids are not able to stay in one place so

we have decided to switch them to home

school. We have chosen an Alpha &

Omega Christian Academy for them

which was suggested to us by our

American friends. One year of school

costs approximately $1700 for us. We

are asking for your prayers so God

would bless their education. If you

would like to support us financially in

this, we would greatly appreciate it.

We hope you will be encouraged

to know that your partnership is making

an eternal difference in hundreds of lives

in Siberia. We are thankful for your

sowing seeds in this ministry. Our

prayers are for God to bless you

abundantly.
