When You Thought I Wasn’t Looking

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw youhang my first painting on the refrigerator and Iimmediately wanted to paint another.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw youmake my favorite cake for me and I learned thatthe little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw youmake a meal and take it to a friend who was sick

and I learned what it means to serve one another in brotherly love.

When your thought I wasn’t looking, I heard you pray over me and kiss me goodnight and I feltloved and safe.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities even whenyou didn’t feel good and I learned what it means to glorify God in all things.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you give of your time and money to the church andpeople in need and I learned that God loves a cheerful giver.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come to your eyes and I learned that sometimesthings hurt, but it’s all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything that Icould be.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you praying and reading God’s Word and I learnedto depend on and trust in Him, too.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked atyou and wanted to say, “Thanks for all the thingsI saw....when you thought I wasn’t looking.

Happy Mother’s Day

Abounding LoveThe Last Great Conflict—A. J. Tomlinson

There is so much spoken and written in these days on the subject ofdivine love. With all that has been spoken and written on this subject thedepth of this wonderful attribute of God has never been explored by man. With all that has ever been experienced by the noble saints who have livedand died and gone to glory, there is still a supply and depth of this peculiargem that lies unused and untouched.

In Joseph, with the display of love for his older brothers, in supplyingthem with food after they had treated him so cruelly, is only a very faint

display of this grand and glorious virtue. The sweet singer of Israel who ran from his assailant, and sang and made music for his enemy rather than show

signs of revolt or vengeance; he could have risen up against Saul and taken his life and thus made his accession to thethrone sure, and hastened it on; this David who was loved and revered by the thousands of Israel and the inhabitants ofother nations as well, who commanded the respect of all who lived in his day and every generation since; and who isloved and respected and almost worshiped by multitudes today, was possessed with only a small amount of divine love incomparison to the abundance stored away, and really placed at the disposal of all people of every age.

John the beloved disciple, whom Jesus loved, and who has used the word “love” in his writings more than anyother writer of the sacred pages of the Holy Bible, perhaps plunged deeper into this wonderful experience than any otherone who has ever lived, and yet in his writings, just under the surface, can be detected some indications that he himselffelt a shortness in the possession of this wonderful experience. And although he was so saturated with it both soul andbody, that boiling oil would have no effect upon him when, to destroy him, his persecutors threw him into a caldron ofboiling oil with a hope of ridding themselves and their generation of such a man of love and God; yet in him wasprobably not the deepest form of divine love.

After all that has been written on this wonderful theme, by men who were inspired by the Holy Ghost, as well as,men of high abilities and attainments, I am surprised at myself as I reflect, and really find, that I am writing a few wordson the greatest subject that has ever been presented to man.

With my feeling of inability and shortness of experience I can only traverse the surface, but one thing that givesme encouragement to continue is that I can be as an index finger pointing onward and inward, showing to those whocome in contact with me that my vision of faith beholds greater, grander and more glorious possessions a little farther on,and perhaps someone may be induced to make a greater sacrifice, and plunge deeper into the debris and obstructions thatprevent the obtaining of the “pearl of great price” than they otherwise would if I had never spoken or written on thesubject.

I have only occasional glimpses of the beautiful estate of which I write, but they are enough to urge me with ahope that, if not before, at least the final plunge through the “twinkling of an eye” change, or death, will put me into thiswonderful realm of love and glory of which I write.

God is love, and in proportion to our possession of Him and His presence here in this world is this love realizedand displayed. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, and “in Him dwelleth all the fullness of theGodhead bodily.

God gave His Son to and for this world; then love gave love. God has then given love in its fullness to us, and inand through Christ it is attainable, and can be realized and possessed by those who have obtained all the fullness of God.

The display of love that was in Jesus was so extreme that the human mind has not been, and never will be able tograsp it in its fullest sense; yet as this great treasure has been displayed in full measure in Jesus Christ, by His divinepower and unreasonable methods it has been, and is placed by Him, within the reach of him who is willing to go throughall the changes and departments of suffering that is required to gain such possession.

The example of its sacrifice is seen in its fullness only in Jesus. While we have good examples in the lives, works and sacrifices of the apostles and thousands of others besides, who have given their possessions in this world aswell as their lives, yet the fullness is only manifested in the blessed Son of God. He left His rich possessions in glory andplunged Himself to the opposite extreme, becoming the “poorest of men.” He left position and honor and came down tothe most lowly servitude, and upon Him was heaped dishonor and disgrace, and He “learned... obedience by the thingswhich He suffered.” This is a very peculiar statement, and by us incomprehensible. Having had all knowledge; havinghad all abilities; having known obedience to the very extreme limit, even beyond that of Abraham, who in obedience toGod’s voice took his own son Isaac and offered him as a sacrifice on Mt. Moriah, and yet He, the Christ of God, learnedobedience. Truly, “without controversy, great is the mystery of Godliness.”

Page 4: Alabama Update May 2014

His indefatigable efforts to relieve suffering humanity, by healing their diseases, casting devils out of them, feeding the multitudes who were hungry, and finally as a climax gave his life on the cruel and rugged cross to obtaineternal redemption for us, is truly an example worthy of notice.

He went to the very lowest disgrace in the eyes of men, that of being crucified. Not only did He descend to thevery lowest position of disgrace and dishonor in the sight of men, but there is evidence given by the words that fell fromHis sacred lips during His last moments on the cross as He said, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, “My God,my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” That He went to the very lowest dishonor and disgrace in the sight of God; solow, so degraded, to such a low disgraced estate, that even God refused to look upon Him.

Such a display of love on the part of our Saviour is beyond the comprehension of our finite minds; but we are togo beyond our understanding and comprehension, if we go into the mystery of godliness and pass into the “love of Christwhich passeth knowledge.” It evidently takes this extreme experience, in the realm of divine love to place us in theexperience for which our hearts are crying out and our prayers are ascending; that state of being “filled with all thefullness of God.” Not until our lives are saturated with divine love are we even approaching anyways near the desiredhaven.

While we are always and forever in favor of the physical operations by the Spirit; the speaking in tongues as theevidence of the baptism with the Holy Ghost, the casting out of devils, healing the sick by the laying on of hands, etc., yetthere is a realm beyond that embodies all. While “without faith it is impossible to please God,” and without hope allhumanity would grope about in sad despair, yet beyond all, in the valley of humility, unexplored and unpossessed, is asilent force, a glorious virtue, a rich possession, a “peal of great price”, that human language can never describe andhuman mind can never comprehend. This possession, this silent but all powerful force, this “pearl of great price” isDivine Love. “And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

There is something here in this realm that we are approaching as we write that reminds one of the half-hour ofsilence in heaven. “Tread softly, you are on holy ground,” seems to ring sweetly, and specially pleasant in our inner ear. A feeling of breathless stillness is creeping over my entire being; a power within seems to be surging, filling my throatwith a lump, eyes with tears and pen with inspiration as I write on this greatest of all themes. The wonder is now that Iever attempted such an arduous task. God alone inspires; God alone shall have the glory.

We would not underestimate the value of other themes and minor experiences and manifestations of God’spresence, power and glory; but one thing is certain, we cannot overestimate the value of divine love. We have venturedback in behind the veil and we are loathe to return. Although the words written fail to express—although the theme isalmost dishonored by our using it, yet there is a depth in it that can never be expressed, but thank God it is attainable andcan be realized.

I’m sure a revival of love is needed everywhere. Such a deep sense of love, such a saturation of love that wouldsilence the tongue in times of the deepest distress and trial; that would forever put an end to fault-finding, mote hunting, backbiting, chafing, ungodly conversation, hypocrisy and false teaching.

We have the Bible; many of us know its teachings on primary lines. We have heard preaching on almost all linesof truth. We have seen the manifestations of the Spirit. All these are essential and have their respective places; but allhave failed to bring unity, power, and the fullness of Pentecost, so our hearts are still crying out for “the pearl of greatprice,” to “be filled with all the fullness of God.”

A sufficiency of this love will make any sacrifice for God and His glory seem but a mere speck. Our lives will begiven entirely for His service. No jesting, no joking, no light chaffy conversation, no melancholy, no complaints, nomurmuring or grumbling, no disorder, no display of self and no desire for selfish worldly pleasures; but our affectionswill really be placed upon things above.

That which never fails should be earnestly sought for and obtained. We should not be idle about this matter. Souls, that might be won for God and heaven, are plunging into eternal destruction because we are so slow in thepurchase of this that never fails. This world is dying and going to hell for wantof love. They must be loved. They must know they are loved. While Christianpeople are divided and unwilling over minor differences satan is busy carryingoff the multitudes into eternal punishment. Can we afford it? Can’t we stop it? The great problem of our day is solved and victory perched upon our banners asthey float in the breeze and we wave them around the one word andexperience—LOVE!

There is a way that leads to life,There is a way to find it;

Abounding love is always rife,And always will provide it.
