Fundamentals of The Faith

Spiritual Maturity In The Church—Part IVRaymond Pruitt

IV. Each Member Accepts and Adjusts to the Hardships WhichCome in the Course of Service for Christ. "But we have thistreasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may beof God, and not of us" (2 Cor. 4:7).

There is one thing which every one of us must keep in mind, and that is, in ourselves we are weak and fragile creatures. We mustrealize that God is our sufficiency. We must draw from Him all of

our strength. The earthen vessel Paul speaks of is, of course, our bodies, called "the outward man" (2 Cor. 4:16). Ourbody is subject to many frailties and limitations. But it is through these earthen vessels that God has chosen to manifestthe ministry of His Spirit. In His infinite wisdom, God often allows the vessel He uses most wonderfully to be chippedand broken, that He might be all in all, and "that no flesh should glory in his presence" (1 Cor. 1:29).

1. Walking after the Spirit. Those who walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh, should never draw attention tothemselves or elevate themselves as the center of attention, for they are vessels only, earthen vessels, weak and fragile, mortal and soon to be broken to pieces. God so ordained it that the weaker the vessel, the stronger His power will berevealed. A typical example is the apostle Paul who was buffeted by his affliction, and prayed that it might depart fromhim, but the Lord said, "My strength is made perfect in weakness," and Paul was then delighted that God had chosen himbecause he was weak. "Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest.upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ'ssake; for when I am weak, then am I strong" (2 Cor. 12:9, 10).

2. Dealing with stress and strain. Just as our physical bodies must handle stress and strain in the course of theirnormal function in the world, so must the members of the body of Christ maintain their balance and health in spite ofpressures from within and without. Stress is the result of wear and tear caused by life, and there is a spiritual stress just asthere is physical and psychological stress. Many common diseases of the body are largely due to inability to adapt tostress, rather than because of direct damage by germs, poisons, or other external agents. By the same token, most of thediseases in the Church are due to the poor relations of members with one another and with Christ, rather than becauseof attacks from forces outside the body.

3. Unity in the Spirit. The human body possesses a complex organization of checks and balances which areremarkably effective in adjusting to virtually anything that can happen to us in life. It is called "homeostasis," or "thestaying power of the body." In the Church there is also a remarkably effective system for keeping all the members inharmony and functioning in a beautiful accord. It is called "the unity of the Spirit" (Eph. 4:3). The very foundation of ourunity is in the Holy Ghost. There is no other bond which will unite us and strengthen us as will the unity of the Spirit.Church socials, clubs, activities, and outings can be most pleasant and refreshing times of fellowship, but we must look tothe Holy Spirit to unite our hearts together as nothing else can. He takes the many frail and fragile parts and binds themtogether into one, and when they are bound together, they are stronger than they could ever hope to be if separated andalone. When the individual members are united together in the Spirit, they can withstand anything which may comeagainst them. They will no doubt be "troubled on every side, yet not distressed." They will be "perplexed, but not indespair." They will be "persecuted, but not forsaken." They will be "cast down, but not destroyed" (2 Cor. 4:8, 9).Whatever their circumstances in this world, they will always have a "but not" to uphold them.

4. The Church militant. The Church in these last days is a militant Church; that is she is actually engaged in a warfareagainst sin and Satan. She carries on an incessant conflict against evil, within and without. It is not the mission of theChurch to spend all of her time in prayer and fellowship, however important and edifying that may be; nor may she relaxin the peaceful enjoyment of her spiritual heritage She must be fully armed with the whole armor of God, and constantlymoving against the enemy. Such activity exposes its members to stress and danger. But through the Spirit of God, which

is the Paraclete of the Church, and of its individual members, there is an inexhaustible supply of all that is needed tosustain the body while it is engaged in the Master's service. Jesus promised those who would be filled with the Spirit, that"out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7:38). A Spirit-filled church, whose members walk in thefullness of the Spirit, will never be short of the power needed for victory. "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew theirstrength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not befaint" (Isa. 40:31).

5. Like a mighty river flows the Spirit. The "rivers of living water" experience belongs only to those who are filledwith the Spirit. When He flows through the Church like rivers of living water, we see the same results in the Church ashappened along the banks of Ezekiel's millennial river (Ezek. 47). Though the land leading toward the Dead Sea is barrenand arid, yet when the river flows there, Ezekiel saw in his vision "very many trees on the one side and on the other"(Ezek 47:7). A Church which had formerly been destitute and barren will blossom with all kinds of trees for food whenthe Holy Ghost touches the lives of its people. As with the river running through the desert to the Dead Sea, it can be saidof them that their "leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed" (Ezek. 47:12).

When the river of God's Spirit enters the stagnant waters of a "dead sea" membership, the waters will become fresh, and "there shall be a very great multitude of fish" (Ezek. 47:9). That which had been dead and barren will teem withabundance. This is what the Holy Ghost will do for the Church when its members yield themselves to Him and allowthemselves to be used as His consecrated vessels.

But if the Holy Ghost be suppressed and not permitted to flow freely through the membership, the Church willsuffer deprivation, barrenness, embarrassment, and defeat. Paul urged the Ephesians, "Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God,whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption" (Eph. 4:30). Any kind of sin or wilful neglect in our lives grievesHim, and impedes His shining forth through us. Following this verse, Paul went on to mention those specific sins whichare most likely to soil the lives of Christians: carnality, anger, envy, wrong speech, and such like. Whenever theChristian allows these things in his life he quenches and grieves the Spirit, and the result is that He ceases to perform Hissupernatural work of empowering, enlightening, guiding, and anointing, and He reverts to His work of chastening, convicting, correcting, and reproving. If you have lost the song in your heart, and if your prayers are sluggish, and if youfeel defeated, have little or no inspiration, if your service in the Church is becoming wearisome, it is a sure sign that youhave grieved the Holy Ghost, and that you have become a sick member of the body.

The time is here when we can no longer afford to be devoid of the fullness of the Spirit. We live in times of crisis, and unless the Spirit of God flows through the Church as "rivers of living water," we are not going to get along at all. Wewill become a laughingstock to the world, and a reproach to Christ. It is through the Holy Ghost that we have our mostintimate contact with God, for He is God within us, guiding, illuminating, and enabling us at every point.

The doctrine of the baptism of the Holy Ghost sets forth the truth that God is not only transcendent, above andbeyond the world of space and time; nor is He merely with us, but He is God within us, "closer than breathing, nearerthan hands and feet", the very ground of our being, binding us together in one bond with each other, with Christ and withthe Church, which is His body.

Conclusion: This chapter has been concerned with one of the most primary concerns of the Church in this age. Unless the HolyGhost endues the Church with power and gives it guidance, and makes it victorious, no amount of study, training, oractivity will have any real value. Without an abundance of the fruit of the Spirit and full manifestation of spiritual gifts, working in harmony with the God-ordained authorities of the Church, we are not going anywhere, and we are not goingto shake any worlds. Instead of singing, "Like a mighty army moves the Church of God," our theme song would moreappropriately be, "Like a sleepy turtle moves the Church of God"; brothers, we are treading where we've always trod!

The Church is not a human organization, such as a political party, or a society for the promotion or the preventionof something or other. It is a divine institution in that it was called into being by the Lord Himself, and its essence doesnot merely consist in its members sharing a common purpose, but in their sharing a common life. When its memberswalk in the fullness of "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus," there is absolutely nothing that can withstand it (Matt. 16:18),for it will be lacking in nothing it needs to fulfill its holy mission in the world.

C h i c k a s a w : O u rchurch family had al u n c h a t T h eS t a g e c o a c h f o rValentine Day. It was awonderful time offellowship and enjoyedby everyone.

Greenpond: What anawesome God weserve. He is blessingour church and we aree xpec t ing gr e a tmiracles. We werehonored to have theGideon Representative as our guest. It was wonderful to hear how thisministry is touching so many lives. God uses these men in a mighty wayas they distribute the Gospel aroundthe world. “God Loves HisChildren” was the theme for Ladies’Day. Jo Ann Horton was thespeaker and the ladies were trulyblessed. The youth enjoyed anevening of games and fellowship inthe gym. Kids Day was a greatsuccess with “Frozen” as theirtheme. We love our youth andchildren, what a blessing they are toour church. The Seniors celebratedValentine Day at the Old CookStove Restaurant in Danville. Thefood and fellowship was great andtwenty-seven were in attendance.Haleyville-Pathway: I am excited about what God is doing and had toshare a praise report. Sundaymorning during service the Lordbegan to speak to me about Exodus36:1-7, where the people broughtfreewill offerings every morning andevening for the building of thesanctuary, so much, until Moses said“there was more than enough!!” The Lord really begin ministering tome...and I felt like He was askingme “Why don”t you begin to prayfor the same thing so that these

buildings can be finished”. So Ibegan to pray and ask the Lord for“the more than enough blessing” sowe can finish the Youth Church andthe main sanctuary. Before theservices ended an individual visitingfrom another state gave an offeringto the youth...more than enough tofinish the Youth Church!!! Nowthis individual was visiting and shedid not know what I was praying...but God....He knows and He isfaithful and He answers prayers!!! Mark and some other men are at thechurch working as I write, workingand preparing for increase.... “Lordenlarge our territory and, Let yourh o u s e b e f u l l . ” Souls...Souls...Souls!!! Angie Fell

Hartselle: We celebrated four newindividuals joining our church! Ourwomen’s paint and pray smallgroup has grown from 3 attendingthe first class to 14 in our last class. It has been a great time offellowship and devotion time forwomen in our church andcommunity. We also had a CouplesValentine Banquet. We were able toshare in fellowship and many laughswith other couples. It was a busymonth but we are extremely excitedto have the chance to fellowship so

many times and to seeGod’s hand in so muchthat we are doing.Huntsville-MastinLake: Several weeksago the Holy Spiritbegan stirring peoplein a renewing way aswe began a season ofR e v i v a l . W eacknowledged whatwe felt the Lord doingand determined thatnow was our revivaltime. One Sunday a

continuation of a reviving move ofGod’s Spirit.....we were blessed withBrother Emerson Pope, his wife andchildren. They ministered in awonderful and timely way to us andwe were so glad they were with us. However, that was not the uniquepart of our service. As our ministryteam was praying just momentsbefore service started, the entirebuilding lights faded like a dimmerhad moved the control to about 10-20% of normal light. The lobbylights worked fine but the sanctuarywas very dim/dark. However, oursound system and screen for lyricswere 100% operational. Weenjoyed a powerful time of worshipwith many coming up for a call forprayer and healing with the Spiritmoving mightily. Then as wemoved to the offering, in fact, at theend of the offering our powercompletely went out. We openedthe blinds, opened the windows forair and continued on with no power,no air, and no fans (other than theones people were fanningthemselves with) and our peoplenever lost focus. About ten minutesuntil noon as Brother Popepreached, the power came back onand we continued still. On top of all

that, at least two sought theforgiveness of God as they renewedtheir relationship with Christ. In thisone service we were able to solidifythat we can worship and receivefrom God’s Word regardless if ourlights looked more like a youthservice, or we have no air or nomicrophone like in the days past. God is timeless and His Spirit is notconfined to our comforts or normalsetting. I thank God for allowingour circumstances to change and forthose who responded to the Spiritregardless of the circumstances.Leesburg: The Men’s Ministriesprovided a nice Valentine Banquetfor all the ladies of the church. Theycooked, served, and providedentertainment for a fun-filledevening.Pinson: Pinson congregation wantsto thank Sister Kay Pate for filling inwhile the pastor and family were outof town. She did a great job and we praise God for 2 being saved. Godtruly has blessed. Short Creek: What a month! ButGod’s blessings still flow...We wereblessed to have the District Meetingat our church and our StateEvangelist as our speaker. Hepreached a wonderful message andhis wife blessed us with her singing. All the district meetings have beenoutstanding and a great blessing. We celebrated Sister Green’sbirthday and Valentine Day onFamily Night with food, fun andfellowship. We appreciate her forall that she does for the church. Agreat woman of God!

Tarrant: It was cold on the outsidebut warm inside as the Holy Spiritmoved in our services. It was goodto have Brother and Sister Wynnback in church with us after hermishap of falling and breaking 7

ribs. We enjoyed a Valentine Lunchof soup and salad. We ended themonth by visiting with the Altonchurch for a singing featuring “TheCapstones”.Trinity: Prayers of 21 Days arebeing answered. During worship, people began to come up for prayer,to worship, and shout, and get intouch with God. One young ladygot saved in her Sunday SchoolClass and when the news spread, another wave of the glory of Godblew through the church. We havenew talented musicians coming. Also, a new sign is now a blessing tothe church.

Tips For Abundant LifeCarolyn Guyton

Listen. Good listening skills are crucial to

abundant living. Why? If we don’t listen to

God, ourselves and others, then we will be

attempting to live life inside ourselves. God

created us for Him and for others. I believe

that individuals must be open and receptive

in order to know the fullness life can bring.

Listen to God. We realize that our prayer

time is for the purpose of communicating

with God. However, we tend to make it

about talking to Him more than anything

else. It is vitally important that we spend

equal time listening to Him as well. He

speaks to us through the reading of His

Word, but He also speaks in His still, small

voice. If we aren’t intentional about

hearing Him, we will allow life to prevent

it. We must have an open heart and mind in

order to receive His communication.

Listen to Your Heart. My platform is based

on hearing from God, knowing yourself and

then taking action to fulfill your purpose in

life. This plan will not work without all the

steps. We must understand our strengths

and weaknesses, but we must also be aware

of our true feelings and desires. As Chris

Pilkerton put it in a recent sermon, “You

need to pursue the things that make your

heart burn.”

Listen to Others. Listening is about so

much more than sitting and looking at

someone while they talk. True listening,

active listening, involves actually hearing

what is being said, with our ears and with

our heart. The active listener confirms his

understanding and interest by speaking

these back to the talker. This not only

communicates to them that we understand

what they are saying, but that we care

enough about them to truly listen. We learn

from listening to others.
