Liberals all business NDP tackle poverty Conservatives talk taxAs your BC Liberal MLA

candidate for the riding of Alberni-Pacific Rim, I believe that jobs and economic development are the key issues in this election and I am asking for your support on May 14th. Only the BC Liberals are committed to balanced budgets, fiscal responsibility and preserving our AAA credit rating.

I recognize the enormous potential of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and support the 750-hectare Map Reserve to facilitate local port expansion.

A multi-billion-dollar investment in our community, providing jobs and revenue for decades, is not investing in an ice cream cone, despite what the NDP might believe.

I understand the need for improved highway and transportation

infrastructure to support tourism and economic development. The BC Liberal platform includes the development of an integrated

Vancouver Island transportation plan that includes highways, ferries, airports, rail, and deepsea ports. An MLA must be a champion for the riding, not live outside it.

I know that resource

communities are the foundation of B.C., and the BC Liberal platform includes a commitment to share resource dollars from new projects with resource communities, including First Nations.

An MLA needs to support the approval process and work to find solutions, not say “no” before the process is complete.

Equality:An NDP government

will take practical steps to reduce poverty and inequality in B.C.

B.C. has had the worst or second worst record of child poverty in Canada for nine years running.

An NDP government will introduce a legislated Poverty Reduction Strategy with targets and timelines.

We will immediately tie all income assistance rates to inflation, and double earning exemptions so people can enter the work force without having benefits clawed back.

An NDP government will take practical steps to reduce poverty and inequality in B.C.

We will raise household incomes for low and moderately low-income

families with children by investing $210 million a year in a BC Family Bonus program.

Investing in people:An NDP government

will reduce existing fees for licensed infant and toddler care by 20 per cent, saving families an average of $2,000 per year, and increase spaces available.

An NDP government will provide students with the classroom support they need

by hiring new teachers, teaching assistants, librarians and counselors.

The NDP will establish a $100 million non-repayable student grant programs for students who need that help. Too many are being left behind. We will improve and invest $80 million over three years in skills training.

I am running because B.C.’s greatest problem is government elitism: the government is convinced it knows best and that you should pay for it.

If you elect the BC Liberals or NDP, there is no end in sight, except the ever burgeoning cost of government to the detriment of the financial backbone of B.C.: small business and, ultimately, jobs.

Government operates behind closed doors. The veil of secrecy continues as staffers use private e-mail accounts. There is no transparency.

Take the Liberals’ BC Rail scandal, or the “Clean Energy Act” which “rescinded” oversight by the Utilities Commission—the taxpayers’ “watchdog” had its teeth pulled.

BC Hydro was compelled

to purchase overpriced electricity from the Independent Power Producers Association at a loss. Escalating rates are expected to increase

another 50 per cent within two years.

The NDP’s secret shenanigans over Carrier Lumber cost taxpayers a $150 million settlement. Their decision to ignore warnings about the Fast Ferries meant a $463 million loss. That debt, the carbon tax and

the secretive, multilevel bureaucracy of the Liberals’ “Coastal Ferries Act”, has made BC Ferries unaffordable for most, and ultimately devastating to the Island’s tourism dependent economy.

Both Liberal and NDP governments have had hidden agendas and fudge-it budgets.

Forestry tops issues at all-candidates’ eventWAWMEESH

More than 150 people attended the Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA all-candidates forum at the Best Western Barclay Hotel on Tuesday night.

Forestry topped the night with a question from audience member Dennis Dalla-Vicenza: the Liberals are blamed for gutting the forest industry, he said, but didn’t the death spiral start with the NDP?

Incumbent MLA Scott Fraser admitted that the NDP were responsible for the removal of Clause 7 in the 1990s, and that it was to be a one-off

for one mill. Raw log exports “doubled” during the Liberals’ tenure since 2009, Fraser said.

If there were no raw logs then there would be no profit required to log at all, Liberal candidate Darren DeLuca said. “If mills want to get into logging, I’m sure loggers will stand aside. They’ll lose money at it though.”

And the sale of McMillan Bloedel to Weyerhaeuser happened under former NDP premier Ujjal Dosanjh, DeLuca said. “That’s when we started to see the disintegration of forest interests.”

DeLuca and Fraser jousted over who lived

within the boundary riding, with DeLuca pointing out that Fraser doesn’t live

within Alberni-Pacific Rim. “Either you live in the riding or you don’t. It’s like being

a little bit pregnant,” DeLuca said.

The riding office, complete with staff and resources, is located in Port Alberni, Fraser said.

DeLuca was asked about his support of tourism and fishing while at the same time supporting Raven Coal, which poses potential negative impacts.

DeLuca said he’d support the project providing it passes environmental assessment. The project will provide jobs and much needed revenue to the Valley, and kick start the Highway 4 connector initiative.

“It’s okay to be against everything,

but what are you going to be for?” DeLuca asked the audience.

The Conservatives also support the Raven Coal project, “providing it’s done correctly,” candidate Enid-Mary Sangster-Kelly said.

Fraser said he listened to the people’s positions at several public meetings about the Raven Coal project and took them to the legislature. “That’s the job of an MLA.”

Candidates were asked how they would help Catalyst Paper Corp. pensioners, who took a 35 per cent cut to their pensions as a result of company restructuring, and are being asked to take a

payout.Sangster-Kelly

said that pensions should be protected and never should be allowed to be cut back. Fraser said the pension cutbacks should never have happened, and those who allowed it to pass committed a breach of trust against the pensioners.

DeLuca said he lost money in Catalyst shares, which he kept in an RRSP.

“I don’t know if we need a whole mechanism for pensions outside of a corporation’s reporting activity but that’s probably something wise to do,” he said.

his suit and I’ll never forget the tie he wore with a design on it.” Callicum said.

She lost touch with Thompson afterward but ran into him recently.

He was smiling, friendly and positive and said he wanted to take classes at Vancouver Island

University, she said. “He is the last

student I taught who I thought would ever meet an end like this,” Callicum said.

“It’s so hard to believe that this could happen to a kid who was doing everything right.”

Crimestoppers returnsThere is a fresh

weapon in the fight against crime in the Alberni Valley.

The RCMP announced Tuesday the resurrection of the Alberni Valley Crime Stoppers Society.

The new group takes over where the Port Alberni Crime Stoppers program left off in 2011.

The old program generated hundreds of crime solving

leads for local police, according to a press release.

The new program will build on that foundation by offering cash in exchange for anonymous tips.

The society has a new board of directors who are passionate and energetic about fighting crime.

The president of the new group is Quintin Winks, a former journalist in the

Alberni Valley.“We are bringing

back local leadership to this internationally renowned program,” said Winks.

“We are striving to make the Alberni Valley safer and reduce the impact of crime on the community.”

The program is global, and helps solve crimes in communities both large and small.

Its success lies in

soliciting the public to provide anonymous information for a cash reward through its dedicated tip line at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The program is built on a partnership between the police, the community and the media.

The new board is focused on building the program’s strength and success by raising its profile here in Port Alberni.

Tools the group will use include crime re-enactments, crime of the week radio spots, or featuring the ‘wanted’ section in local newspapers, said RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan, who is a police liaison to the new program.

V ICTORIA – When Adrian Dix took over as B.C. NDP

leader two years ago, he struggled to communicate, especially in the sound bites of radio and TV.

There was a running joke in the legislature press gallery: It didn’t matter what question you asked him, you got a six-minute answer that ended with the evils of log exports.

Even more than under Carole James, the NDP railed against log exports. “B.C. logs for B.C. jobs” became one of Dix’s favourite slogans. As the election approached, another Dixism was heard daily: “Say what you’re going to do, say how you’re going to pay for it.”

So it was a surprise a few weeks ago when the NDP signaled it would essentially not offer a policy on log exports. They’re going to meet with “stakeholders” and

come up with a plan after they get a majority government.

This is exactly the same non-policy the NDP had in 2009. They don’t have an answer to the industry’s point that the high price gained by premium logs in foreign markets is what keeps many loggers working, and subsidizes the harvest of other logs for B.C. coastal mills.

Another thing the NDP doesn’t like is private power development. This issue featured prominently in the NDP leadership contest two years ago.

Leadership contender Mike Farnworth told the party faithful he would study independent power purchase contracts, and if he found that they are not in the public interest, he would “mend them or end them.”

By this spring, Dix had a new non-position on power purchase contracts. He will “assess them and

address them.” Either they plan to risk a costly legal battle, or they’re just paying lip service. All you have to do to find out is elect them.

Labour code changes are another blank slate. A memo from the B.C. Federation of Labour executive to members last year described how they were working closely with

the NDP to rewrite B.C. labour law.

The NDP election platform punts this issue until after the election as well, promising an independent

expert panel to decide on issues like whether to end secret-ballot votes for union certification.

This isn’t just a bad idea, it’s a 30-year-old bad idea. It’s based on the destructive old notion that employers are the enemy of workers, and only a union can protect them. The long decline of union membership in the private sector

isn’t caused by employer bullying or secret-ballot votes that protect employees’ freedom of choice. The cause is global competition. The only protection workers have from that is their own efficiency.

Balancing the budget? An NDP government will strive to do that over “the business cycle,” says finance critic Bruce Ralston. Old-timers might remember this one. It’s taken from the NDP’s 1991 election platform.

If you still believe in a predictable “business cycle,” you may be willing to accept that an NDP-led B.C. will become the first jurisdiction in human history to eliminate poverty by setting annual targets and paying out borrowed money to low-income parents.

On ferries, fracking, union contracts, capital construction and other weighty matters, the NDP’s answer is the same: trust us.

Same rules apply to feds

Chapter eight of the 2013 Spring Report of the Auditor General of Canada should ruffle the feathers of every taxpayer in this country.

The title of chapter eight is “Spending on the Public Security and Anti-Terrorism Initiative.”

The word “uncontrolled” should have been at the front of that title. The spring report is the result of a performance audit designed to identify “… how well government is managing its activities, responsibilities, and resources.”

The conclusion of the Attorney General on the massive spending program geared to keep Canadians safe from terror is that, “…departments and agencies reported spending $9.8 billion on PSAT Initiative activities, but information on whether departments used $3.1 billion in Initiative funding was not available.” Information on where $3.1 billion went is just not available? Why?

It’s tax time and Canadians are being asked to provide proof of income and expenses to ensure we’re following rules to keep our economy humming along. Why is the federal government playing under a different set of rules?

The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat mandate is to provide advice and support to Treasury Board ministers and provide oversight of the financial management of government. Given that they have identified three possible scenarios that might account for what happened to the money (they are at least good at that) it shouldn’t be a big leap to drill down a little further.

Money should be something easy to track. This department received X amount, then X gave it Y who spent it on Z. Here’s the paperwork about what Z is. According to the report, weaknesses in the way the government assesses proposals for funding and their reporting processes, were identified as far back as 2004.

This isn’t pocket change, so the question needs to be asked: How well is the government managing activities, responsibilities and resources in this case? In a word: badly.

More to life than economy

To the Editor,It’s all somewhat

confusing. The NDP says “this” and the Liberals say “that, the Conservatives and the Green Party are almost forgotten in the ruckus. The flood of Liberal ads about how good they are remind me of how Christy Clark used public employees and money to help make those ads. I know that wasn’t their intention, but it does add a certain dimension to the continual barrage of half truths.

Christy’s government has given us increased costs for basic needs like health care,

education, and those fancy ferries, in exchange for less services. The export of raw logs continues.

Colin Hansen’s 2009 budget had the B.C. government “overspending its revenues by $2.8 billion that year, ministry expenditures will fall by $500 million over the next three years and B.C. will run a deficit for the next four. A surplus is imagined by 2013”. Sounds familiar. We now have a new twist to the old fairy tale: mining and oil/gas/coal exports will save us sometime in the future if we keep electing these people.

Of course, we really don’t know what the Liberal government is doing. According to the Information

and Privacy Commissioner, Liberal government has stopped keeping records of major decisions in order to circumvent freedom of information laws and avoid public scrutiny.

For everything that questions Liberal competence and efficiency, not to mention honesty and public benefit, someone will come up with what the NDP

did wrong a decade or so ago. Seems to me they both have done some good things and some not-so-good things.

My hope is that, as we go to the polls, we will seek independent information even while we enjoy or endure the silly ads. And that we will remember there is more to life than the economy: breathing clean air, drinking healthy water, having

a sustainable and dependable food source, and being the kind of people our heirs can be proud of.

Development a key issue

We’ve been there and suffered dire consequences. And in our constituency, we are choosing between a candidate that doesn’t even live in the riding as opposed to Mr. DeLuca, whose family have been stalwart, hard-working Alberni boosters for decades.

The BC Liberals have made some questionable decisions over the past 12 years but nothing worth voting in the alternative.

Take health care seriously

nurse, if age, chronic disease or impending death mean I require help with personal care I expect my tax-dollars to pay for community-based care aides so I may live and die in peace at home.

Community-based home and palliative care is where the majority of nursing care aides should be employed, not replacing licensed nurses in acute-care hospitals, like a new plan being floated at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Nurses and the public should be alarmed and outraged for government is running health-care like it was a business and patients are paying the price.

I’m concerned that many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability.

Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation

of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev up spending while hampering resource development through endless environmental reviews or by just saying “no”, driving investment to other provinces and

other countries.We need new

mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe.

Economic development and the protection of the environment are not

mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good stewards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the economy forward in an environ-mentally responsible manner.

Saying no to new projects will mean job losses for the currently employed and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force.

We also need to focus on balancing the provincial budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs.

Forty years of experience in business has taught me that too much debt is crippling.

It scares me that the NDP have rolled out billions of dollars in new spending during this campaign.

Their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just isn’t credible because their anti-development attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spending rises.

There is truth to the adage, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade.

Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada.

A low point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked the B.C. government for driving growth investment in Alberta. Glenn Clark’s 1996-1999 tenure was arguably

the most disastrous for B.C. and with Adrian Dix, Premier Clark’s former chief of staff leading the province, I’d be very worried about history repeating itself.

It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their time in government, North America suffered through a

major recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the US government, allowing B.C. taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates.

Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by the Campbell government was badly handled.

There have been other gaffes and ill thought out policies.

And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s

important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a

mountain of debt.I’m not asking

that you agree with me, only that you think through the full consequences of your choice carefully before you vote.

Both parties have incurred huge financial losses for taxpayers. Both increased funding to ministries only to watch as services deteriorated.

All this has resulted in increased taxation and “service” fees —for services we have already paid exorbitantly for.

Government grows less and less transparent as it becomes more and more expensive. The legislature sat for just 19 days in this last year: while decisions needing public scrutiny, were mostly made behind closed doors.

Fighting tax issue River Bend Park needs porta-potty in summer: KerrPort Alberni city

councillor Wendy Kerr would like to see washrooms installed at River Bend Park

during the summer months.

Kerr made a motion April 22, during council’s regular

meeting, to have staff provide a report on the costs of such an undertaking, and the motion was passed.

Kerr said the park is heavily utilized during the summer, and installing a washroom

would make a more welcoming atmosphere for both residents and tourists during peak season.

The Alberni Happy Hatters have been a chapter of the Red Hat Society for nine years. They joined the Cherry Tarts Ii and Luscious Lady Bugs at Burde Hill Estate Clubhouse to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Red Hatting. The ladies did skits and gave demonstrations during an afternoon of fun.

The Mid-Island Kidney Association (MIKA) held its annual Spring Bring and Buy Potluck Dinner on April 20 at the Eagles Hall on Third Avenue. Penny Gates was the lucky winner of a MIKA t-shirt and was presented with it by member Anna Cullina. MIKA is currently holding a raffle and will be at No Frills every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at Quality Foods every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. First prize is a $200 gift certificate to Quality Foods and the draw date is June 10.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #293 gave out a whopping $6,100 to local groups. Bingo chairman Barrie Ward said that their Wednesday night bingos continue to grow and so this allows them to give away more money. Colour your world with a rainbow of veggies

The warm May spring weather has returned

which naturally pulls people outdoors to spend their time.

Flowers and buds are popping out, along with nutritious greens.

The garden brings colour to our world and these colours from veggies and fruits offer healthful benefits to our body when eaten.

The rainbow of

colour provides a variety of different phytochemicals and antioxidants.

Phytochemicals are natural plant substances that protect the plants from predators, such as insects and fungi. These plant chemicals give the plant its colour and when eaten by humans, phytochemicals can protect cells from breakdown.

Orange, red, purple, white, green, yellow, blue all offer different phytochemicals with healthful benefits.

Antioxidants are natural elements

found in foods. They protect body cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals.

Some free radicals are formed from normal body processes when the body uses oxygen. Others come from cigarette smoke and other pollutants in the air. Antioxidants protect body cells from the damage caused by free radicals.

For an example of the way free radicals can damage cells, think of the body as a car. The metal of the car will rust over time

when it mixes with oxygen. When treated with a protective coating, the rust can be prevented from damaging the car so quickly.

Similarly, eating plant foods rich in antioxidants daily can help protect your body cells from free radical damage and breakdown.

Vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium are some examples of vitamins and minerals that act as antioxidants in the body. Phytochemicals including flavonoids, polyphenols and carotenoids are compounds found naturally in plants which may also act as antioxidants.

Antioxidants help to keep you healthy and may also help prevent some chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

In food, there are many different antioxidants that can be found in appropriate amounts. More does not always mean better. Research and ongoing studies suggests that taking high dose antioxidant supplements in pills and/or powder form may be harmful, since they act more like medicine in the body than nutrients.

Single dose supplements may throw off the balance of nutrients in the body and cause nutrient interactions.

A good variety of food with a well balanced diet has the appropriate level of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and other nutrients to keep the immune system strong, protect heart health, maintain blood pressure and weight and prevent degenerative eye diseases.

It is recommended to consult a health-care professional if you are considering taking high dose

antioxidants in supplemental form.

Some antioxidants and phytochemicals that are found in food include:

• Vitamin C is found in peppers (red, yellow, green), kiwifruit, strawberries, oranges, papaya, brussels sprouts, broccoli, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, and potatoes.

• Vitamin E is found in: leafy greens, almonds, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, peanuts, and avocado.

• Selenium is a mineral that is found in: Brazil nuts, fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, grain products, wheat germ,

wheat bran, beans, oat bran and eggs.

• Carotenoids are found in: kale, tomatoes/tomato products, spinach, sweet potato, carrot, leafy vegetables, pumpkin, squash, guava, watermelon, grapefruit. A commonly known carotenoid is beta-carotene.

• Flavonoids are found in: berries (especially dark coloured berries), cherries, red grapes, onions, apples, cocoa, tea (especially green tea).

Including five different colours of vegetables and fruits in your daily diet will offer the variety of phytochemicals and protective elements to help keep the body healthy. Eating fruit at each meal and vegetables at lunch and dinner will help reach this goal of five different colours.

Aim for seven to 10 servings per day of vegetables and fruits in your diet.

Growing a few leafy greens in the garden, balcony or windowsill container can help increase the intake of daily vegetables. Also, buying produce from local suppliers regularly can help support the Alberni Valley economy and your health.

The weekly Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning at Harbour Quay is one way to get your locally grown produce. In addition, purchasing a monthly Good Food Box at Salvation Army for a reasonable cost supports local food programs to help improve your personal intake of colourful fruits and vegetables.

Enjoy the seasonal variety and eat your colours. It will do your body good!

10. They are inaccurate. Students know that the scores do not “count” for the report card, so some do not do their best work. 9. They are impractical. Reading and Math in real life are not a series of multiple choice questions! 8. School Resources are Re-directed. School Resources such as libraries, computer labs and educational support personnel are not available for other students who are not writing the FSA. 7. The costs are downloaded. The Ministry of Education only funds part of the FSA costs. The Alberni School Board is forced to make up the shortfall out of children’s programs. 6. They are unhelpful. Student answer sheets do not reveal areas that need more teaching. 5. They reduce learning and instruction time. Practicing for and writing the FSA steals valuable learning time from students and instruction time from teachers. 4. They are incomplete. FSA results are based on raw scores on just one test of reading, writing, and numeracy. The results are not reliable, valid or fair. 3. They are unnecessary. Report cards are a more reliable measure of a student’s overall progress with evidence from diverse assessments over the term. 2. They are unsupported by any funding. Test results bring no additional funding or support to students or schools, even if needs are identified. 1. They invite misuse. Student art rises up at Rollin

Art in the Schools will be the next Art exhibit at Rollin Art Centre, starting May 14 and running until June 8. Students from local elementary schools and Community Living who took part with local artists in Art in the Schools will have their artwork on display during this unique exhibit.

An artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, May 25 from 1-3 p.m. at the Rollin gallery. Come out and meet these up-and-coming artists and help them experience what being an artist is all about.

Banner project deadline close

Children, adults and school groups can partake in the 2013 community banner paint-in later this month.

Arrowsmith Rotary Club is again sponsoring the banner program. There is a $10 registration fee to cover the cost of supplies. MURRAY JAMES BRYANJanuary 16, 1935 - April 18, 2013

Passed away at WCGH surrounded by his loving wife and family at the age of 78. Born Lions Head, ON. A very hard worker from the young age of 12, he only missed three days of work in his entire career. He was much loved and respected by all he knew and worked with. Murray will be deeply missed by his loving wife Nor-ma, daddy’s girl Darlene, son Bill and grand-children Chris, Kyle and Josh, great-grandchildren, and spe-cial love to Crystal. She worked as a porter at the university hospital in Edmonton, retiring to Port Alberni for the last 26yrs. A Memorial Tea will be held at a later date.
