For more than 75 years, the Rotary Club of Port Alberni has been supporting the community with projects that really make a difference. From the path at Kitsuksis Dyke

to playground equipment in local parks and breakfast for kids at local schools, the Rotary Club of Port Alberni strives to partner with good things going on in the Alberni Valley. Rotary Clubs originally started in

Chicago in 1905, the first service club organization. Started by attor-ney Paul Harris for businessmen of the day who wanted to give

back to their community, the motto of Rotary is Service Before Self. That desire continues today with more than 35,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide. Rotarians measure their actions

against the four-way test with every project they undertake: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all con-cerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be bene-ficial to all concerned? The Rotary Club of Port Alberni

of today focuses their efforts on supporting youth in the commu-nity. The breakfast program at ADSS, Literacy Alberni, ADSS

team bus, bursaries for gradu-ating students, Kidsport, Sal-vation Army Christmas family

sponsorship, Hug-

ginz by Angel, the annual pirate train to McLean Mill and so many more worthy efforts benefitting youth are supported by the efforts of the club. The club raises funds for these

causes with three annual fund-raisers. The most recent and perhaps best-known one is the $10,000 cash draw during Salmon Fest. This year’s lucky recipient is Mark Anderson. Nearly 3,000 tickets were sold this year. Mardi Gras in February was

another successful event that brought a bit of colour to a wet time of the year. Nearly 150 people joined Rotarians for Ca-jun-style food, a night of Dixieland and dancing and a wonderful auction.

The third fundraiser is the annual Rotary Golf 4 Kids at Hollies. This year local teams played in the heat, but were still generous with their time and money in supporting the event. But it isn’t all work for Rotary

members. The real draw for many members is keeping up on what is going on in the community, giving back to the community in a meaningful

way and meeting new people .Although Rotary was started

as an opportunity for business-men, today Rotary considers new members from all walks of life and genders. The Rotary Club of Port Alberni

meets for lunch every Thursday at the Best Western Barclay, where members and guests have an opportunity to network and hear about something going on in the community from a local guest speaker. Anyone interested in being a part

of the Rotary Club of Port Alberni is welcome to drop by for lunch or contact through Facebook.

◆ COVER STORY

EurofestOCT. 10: | Oktoberfest, Kinderfest and Schutzenfest, all in one

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Oktoberfest just got a whole lot bigger.

On Thanksgiving Saturday, Oct. 10, the newly crowned Eurofest will encompass three different festivals: traditional Oktoberfest at Glenwood Centre at 7 p.m., Kinderfest for kids at Glenwood Centre earlier in the day (2–4 p.m.) and a Schutzenfest at the West Coast Rangers’ black powder range just east of town (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.).

The expanded format is the brainchild of John Kenchenten and his committee, who took over when the Europa Club retired at the end of August. Joop Scheffers looked after the German celebration for 40 years prior to that.

Kenchenten said the

impetus for expansion was simple: “I felt Oktoberfest wasn’t inclusive enough.”

He envisioned a celebration that would involve everyone from children to grandchildren. All three festivals usually take place separately in Europe, and he decided to roll them into one day.

Kinderfest will take place from 2– 4 p.m. at Glenwood Centre, and will include The Big Mess entertainers. “It’s for kinders (kids). It’s all super fun things,” he said.

Cost is $10 for kids, adults admitted for free. Family rates available.

Schutzenfest will take place during the West Coast Rangers’ annual Rendezvous, so people will be able to come out and practice target shooting with 22-calibre rifles for $10 for 10 shots, under

supervision. There will be other activities for people to watch and members of the Rangers will have an oldtime black powder camp set up.

“My mandate as a firearms instructor is to encourage new members. In many part of Europe Schutzenfest is bigger than Oktoberfest by far,” he said.

Oktoberfest will feature the TimeBenders.

For more information on any of the three festivals, check out the new website at www.eurofest.info.

Tickets are available online at the website or from Steampunks Café, Rainbow Lanes, M&D Auto Parts, Blue Marlin Inn, Alberni Valley News, Best Western Barclay Hotel and Scotiabank. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

SUSAN MARGARET WATSONJune 1, 1922 - September 14, 2015

Surrounded by love, lifted in prayer, and after a full life, Sue died peacefully at West Coast General Hospital, Port Alberni, BC, on September 14, 2015.

We were blessed to have our mom for 93 years and she will be forever loved and remem-bered by the three generations of her family, her children, Lynn Burnip (Rick), Leslie Reid (Tom, deceased), Doug Watson (Kim), and Gayle Hesse (Jim); her grandchildren, Meegan (Jay), Aaron (Tanya), Mike (Teresa), Bryan, Jamey (Keely), Ryan, Brea (Mike), Jason, and Matthew; and her great-grandchildren, Kyla, Zachary, Haley, Willa, Troy, Cody, Adam, Sara, and Magdalene. Sue is predeceased by her husband, George Bernard Watson; her parents, Elizabeth Ellen and George Augustus Bellamy; and her brothers, George (Ethel), Tom (Gen), and John (Betty), and sisters, Lucy (Roley), Nell (Gordon), and Ede (Tom).

Sue was the youngest in her family; born and raised in Port Alberni. During the war years, mom met her future husband, George, married him in 1943, and accompanied Dad to PEI where he was stationed. After the war, they lived in Vancouver for a short time, then returned to Port Alberni to raise their children, develop a family business, and become a part of the community.

Mom had a great love of the Alberni Valley, and was very active in preserving the history of the local area through the Port Alberni Historical Society and the Port Alberni Archives.

Mom was a life-long and active member of her church, supporting and participat-ing in many activities and prayer groups. Through the years, mom volunteered for the Girl Guides, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society, the Hard of Hearing Association, the Sea Cadets, and many other organizations.

Mom met the challenges of her life with good humour, always thankful for her blessings, and not dwelling on her difficulties. She was generous of spirit and always considered the needs of others before herself. Mom was a loving, devoted, and proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was keenly interested in, and encouraging of, her family’s interests and achievements.

Mom was an integral part of her large extended family, and her home was filled with countless mementoes and photographs of special family occasions. Auntie Sue will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews.

We would like to express our thanks to the staff at Heritage Place, who looked after her with great care during her last years.

We hope you will be able to join us as we honour our mom with a Celebration Service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015,

at Jericho Road Church, 5100 Tebo Ave, Port Alberni. A reception will follow the service.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Because of mom’s support for mission and ministry, donations may be made to Jericho Road Church, 5100 Tebo Ave, Port Alberni, BC, V9Y 5Y6 or to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca

She is survived by four sisters, Marion, Ollie, Louise and Hazel. She is also survived by her grand- children Tom (Jennifer), Tracey (Brian), Jeff (Dorota) and Dene, and daughter-in-law Reyna. She leaves 13 great grandchildren and one great grandson.

Mom was born in Angusville, Manitoba and moved to Vancouver Island with her husband in 1941 where she remained. Emily and Chub were very active in minor baseball in Duncan, making many lifelong friends along the way.
