Culture shock:Trip to boys’ school in Uganda opens the world to a Port Alberni teen

Dayle Carter left Port Alberni on Oct. 28 for Mbarara, Uganda, where she will spend three months working with missionary Pat Kokura at the Jericho Children’s Project.

Carter’s association with Kokura began when Carter was in Grade 7 and Kokura came to her class to speak about her Ugandan travels. Carter began raising money to purchase goats and pigs for the boys’ school Kokura started as well as for the children’s relatives.

Her fundraising projects have ranged from collecting bottles to holding a garage and bake sale, and selling African crafts. Last year she and a friend from the ADSS Social Justice class made $350 selling paper beads through Be(ad) the Change, which will go towards a new building for the Jericho Children’s Project.

Kokura has encouraged Carter for the past five years, and is happy the teen decided to go to Uganda to see in person what effect her fundraising has had.

“It’s going to open her world,” Kokura said before Carter left Canada.

“She’s going to see how the rest of the world lives.”

Read further as Carter tells the story of her first days in Mbarara, Uganda.

DAYLE CARTERSpecial to the NewS

I stood in front of the infamous green gate that read ‘Jericho Children’s Project’ in white.

The bus ride from Kampala, the Ugandan capital, to Mbarara had taken four hours.

A couple of boys rushed around me carrying my luggage, despite my protests that I was capable. I was whisked inside the door and

greeted by many new faces. I was speechless. I had waited for that moment for so long.

Over the next two hours boys climbed through the gate—coming home from school at various times. Their faces lit up when they saw that Patricia Kokura, their momma, had returned from Canada.

One week later I have tasted the juiciest pineapple in the world, eaten beans and potatoes for every meal, taken a million pictures and felt more joy than comprehensible.

Even though half the boys only speak Runyankole, the language of Southwest Uganda, I have gotten to know them well. Boy John, for instance, is a little monkey. However, he’s always polite and told me that he wants to become an engineer. He also has a contagious laugh that you can hear from across the room.

Then there’s Lev. He’s a sweet little boy with curious eyes. He was quite shy at first, but now he runs around giggling and posing for pictures. He’s so small that you’d never know that he eats two heaping plates of food at every meal.

Another boy named Simon knows more languages than anyone I know. He can speak Runyankole, English, French and Spanish and he’s only 16. I’m sure he’ll be an interpreter or an ambassador one day. On top of this he also is part of his church’s choir—in which he has memorized all the songs and dances.

Inside the gate of the Jericho Children’s Project I found many happy boys with promising futures.

Mark is one of the people who greeted me when I first arrived. He had a smile on his face and a scarf around his neck.

I got to know Mark over several meals. I quickly learned his love of music. He enjoys singing and dancing, particularly to Chris Brown. He also told me that he was in Senior 4, which is the

equivalent to Grade 10, and is the last mandatory grade in high school in Uganda.

Mark’s favourite subjects are mathematics and science, which he plans to utilize when he attends Mbarara University of Technology and Science. He plans to become a computer technician.

Mark has a bright future, but not as bright of a past. His mother died when he was four and his father won’t

acknowledge him. Mark, as a result, lived on the streets of Mbarara.

It’s a few months overdue but the new theatre at Alberni District Secondary School is finally open.

The 500-seat theatre will be unveiled at the grand opening of the high school this Friday, Dec. 7.

School District 70 took occupancy of the theatre this week.

The new facility is more compact than its 700-seat predecessor, but it makes up for it

in terms of design, acoustics, lighting, and space usage, School District secondary treasurer Jerry Linning said.

There is a control room spanning the width of the rear seating. There is a catwalk up above. And the floor has a steeper incline than that in the old theatre.

The theatre was to have opened in September. But construction and lighting issues prevented it until now.

The new 500-seat theatre at ADSS will be officially unveiled at the school’s grand opening on Friday. The new facility is smaller and steeper than the old one on Burde Street. But it has better acoustics, lighting and space useage.

APD bag house back in business after fire WAWMEESH

G. HAMILTONAlberni VAlley news

More than 30 employees expect to be back to work

next week after a fire closed the bag house at Western Forest Products Alberni Pacific Division mill in November.

A fire in the bag

house portion of the mill on Nov. 22 closed the area and displaced more than 30 workers, United Steelworkers member Scott Loudon said.

The fire was located in the sawdust cyclone, or bag house portion of the mill. Sawdust and wood chips are collected from throughout the mill and deposited via ducting and conveyor belt into the bag house.

The facility is expected to be up and running and the employees back to work on Monday, Dec. 10, Loudon added.

WorkSafe investigators were accompanied by employee representatives Loudon and Paul Brassard as they conducted their investigation at the

mill last week.A WorkSafe

inspection report dated Nov. 28 focuses on replacing couplings and bearings related to an auger in the bag house. It also requires APD staff to have the structural integrity of catwalks and supporting integrity systems certified by a professional engineer before the facility can reopen.

“They took some parts away to be inspected. I don’t think they’re finished yet, though,” Loudon said.

WorkSafe spokesperson Megan Johnston confirmed

that that investigators concluded their onsite investigation, but that no cause had been determined yet. “We won’t have any comment until the investigation is complete,” Johnston said.

A WorkSafe investigation report dated Dec. 3 though states that “...further enforcement action is not necessary at this time.”

The Port Alberni Fire Department meanwhile has completed its investigation and the cause appears to be mechanical, deputy chief Chris Jancowski said. “It was an issue

in the lower assembly area,” he said.

Specifically, the investigation pointed to a machine called the auger, Jancowski added.

The auger operates inside a sleeve and uses bearings. There is friction and heat inside the assembly when the equipment operates, which can ignite the sawdust.

From / 3Although Uganda is

located at the equator, Mbarara gets cold and it rains a lot; so it’s a great struggle to survive on the streets. Especially as a child.

That’s why Mark is so happy that he found Jericho Children’s Project, Kokura’s home for kids from the street. Here, he has a dry bed, clothes, food and an education. Not to mention a family—with 25 brothers—that loves him.

Life in Uganda is very different for me. I expected things to be different. I knew that I was walking into a different world, but I didn’t know that I would love it so much.

However, because of the people I’ve met, like Mark, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.

I don’t get to watch television, use my phone or have hot water for a shower every morning, but I’m learning to speak Runyankole, reading more and making friends that I will always have in my heart.

ACRD goes iTechMEETINGS: | Regional directors all receive iPads in an effort to go paperless.

WAWMEESHG. HAMILTON

AlbeRni VAlley news

Alberni Clayoquot Regional District directors are going paperless by going high-tech.

The directors and staff will be using new iPads to read their agenda, reports and correspondence instead of paper, manager of administrative services Wendy Thomson said.

The iPads recently arrived at the ACRD offices and directors will be giving the new system a trial run at this week’s meeting, Thomson said.

The move is unique to municipal bodies in the Alberni Valley but it’s not a new idea, Thomson said.

“A lot of other city bodies and regional districts use this,” she said.

Other municipal bodies also use iPads, and the ACRD can benefit from hitting the ground running with consistent hardware and policy issues, ACRD IT manager George Rose

said.ACRD directors

were given an orientation on the new system last Wednesday by Rose, who had his hands full.

“The size of the group was a bit cumbersome and we had an issue with a router so it was stressful at first,” Rose said. “But they’re an eager

group and they’ll be returning for some one-on-one training later.”

One benefit to the ACRD is that staff no longer have to scan, photocopy and assemble hundreds of pages for multiple agenda packages. “They can now convert the electronic documents into a PDF and download it onto the iPad,” Rose said.

Across the road, the City of Port Alberni is watching the ACRD’s e-initiative with interest, city clerk Davina Hartwell said.

“We’re watching to see how the pieces unfold there,” Hartwell said.

Hartwell watched a demonstration of the system while at a city clerks’ conference recently.

V ICTORIA – Whatever happens in the provincial

election five months from now, taxpayers should insist that it be the last spring vote.

Now I know this isn’t sexy like the horse race of popularity polls so loved by the TV news. But integrity of public financial information is the next vital step in democratic reform, even more important than scheduled election dates. And the B.C. tradition of tabling untested election budgets, shutting down the legislature and firing up the campaign buses, has to end.

The B.C. Liberals are on track to surpass the NDP on fudge-it budgets, having put millions into TV ads that insist the 2013 budget will struggle into the black. This is the hill Christy Clark has chosen to die on.

Glen Clark set the modern bar with his 1996 election budget. After a run of red ink, it conjured a tidy little surplus that helped the NDP squeak out a win over the plaid-shirted Gordon Campbell.

Campbell’s noisy exit had its roots in his 2009 fudge-it budget, which clung to an outdated $500-million deficit forecast that had already melted down along with banks, auto makers and U.S. real estate. After the election, British Columbians found out we were really $2.8 billion in the red.

Not one to waste a good crisis, Campbell ordered the harmonized sales tax.

Now Premier Clark and Finance Minister Mike de Jong are proposing to balance the budget and shut down the HST money machine.

Clark gave a speech in Coquitlam the day before last week’s budget update,

warning it “won’t be pretty.” And it’s not. In September the current-year deficit forecast jumped above $1 billion, largely due to a glut of natural gas. The latest update pushed it near $1.5 billion.

Natural gas royalties are bumping along the bottom, no big change

there. But now coal prices and shipments are down, and a slow real estate market has pinched the flow of cash from Bill Vander Zalm’s legacy, the property

purchase tax.I erred in a previous

column, saying this year’s deficit is partly due to a staged repayment of federal HST transition money. Not so.

That entire $1.6 billion was booked in last year’s budget, pushing that deficit to a record $3 billion. This means the current $1.5 billion bleeder is based strictly

on current revenues, debt servicing and spending.

So how is this sucking chest wound going to suddenly heal next spring? De Jong provided an early version of his answer in his September financial statement. Amazingly, it projects a recovery of more than $100 million in natural gas royalties next year. Hmmm. Liquefied natural gas exports to Asia are still years away, and the U.S., our only current energy export customer, is developing its own huge shale gas and shale oil reserves.

In another forecasted miracle, sales tax revenue is expected to dip by a mere $120 million as the old provincial sales tax returns next year. In 2014 it is projected to bounce right back to where it is today, around $6.1 billion.

That’s odd. When former finance minister Kevin Falcon announced the transition back to PST last May, he described annual revenue loss of about $500 million the first year, and more than $600 million the next.

EDITORIAL

This justiceis invaluable

Volunteers accomplish a variety of tasks in our communities, but those who give their time to restorative justice programs may do more than meets the eye.

Traditional theories of justice run from retribution to deterrence, rehabilitation to incarceration and each has its place in our judicial system.

We all want violent offenders off our streets and all criminals made accountable for their actions. We want a justice system that is fair to all of those involved, both offenders and victims.

Too often, a traditional approach to justice fails to change the attitude of the offender, much less give them an appreciation of the harm they’ve done. Those incarcerated may be even more dangerous upon their release and recidivism rates are high. Victims are often left feeling frustrated by the judicial process.

When we look at justice, we frequently focus on punishment. Making sure the victim feels the punishment fits the crime and the chance for reparation are often overlooked. This is where restorative justice has the greatest impact.

In cases where the practice is used, the victim plays an active role in how the perpetrator is dealt with. This allows the victim’s voice to be heard from the beginning of the process, unlike the court system, which often leaves victim impact statements to follow a conviction.

For the restorative justice system to work, however, it requires offenders to admit their guilt and show remorse, victims who are willing to use the alternative to the justice system, and a supportive community for both.

We are fortunate to have volunteers run restorative justice programs in our communities. But with the court system overburdened, it’s time for government to invest in expanding these programs.

Port Alberni churches invite you to join them this holiday season to take part in the many programs they offer celebrating the birth of the Christ Child in the manger so long ago. Mailbag: Feedback on mills, greed, our MP and bureaucratic rule.

Mill hazards underestimated

To the Editor,The potential for

explosive dust fires is well understood in many industries.

When the forest industry was thriving, general mill clean-up was given a high priority where I worked.

When company profits got squeezed by unfavourable markets, clean-up was reduced to save money. Processing bone-dry beetle-killed trees increases the need for additional clean-up.

Several years ago I was involved in the installation and maintenance of a ‘baghouse’.

This baghouse is a huge vacuum cleaner that is used to safely collect the powdery wood dust created when plywood is sanded.

The first line of defence against explosive combustion in a baghouse is an automated spark detecting system coupled to water nozzles.

The next defence is an automatic deluging of the inside of the baghouse by numerous sprinkler heads.

According to what

I have read, dust explosions can occur in stages.

If an ignition source occurs in a dusty area, a small explosion can result which might create a shock wave capable of shaking more dust off surrounding structures.

If the dust-to-air mixture reaches a critical ratio, a secondary explosion can occur.

Depending on the circumstances, a series of cascading explosions can occur in rapid, almost instantaneous, succession.

The BC mill owners and their insurance brokers knew there were risks, but tragically underestimated the hazards and the consequences.

Hopefully lessons have been learned and similar mistakes will not be repeated.

Lloyd Atkins,Vernon, B.C.

Greed, money and questions

To the Editor,Is greed (one of the

seven deadly sins) capitalism`s generator and were Luddites the first greens?

Had environmentalists been a majority, would

there have been an industrial revolution, coal industry or a pulp mill in Port Alberni?

Did capitalist efficiency provide the excess that unions demanded a share of, to get us the social programs and living standards that we have today?

Premier WAC Bennett called our mill`s black ash snow, the breath of prosperity that gave us full employment and the second highest wages in Canada.

Unlike public service entitlements of 18 days annual sick pay and indexed pension, supply and demand determines private enterprise workers` wages and their employers must compete and profit.

Can pristine green tourism float public servants (whose remuneration often exceeds public sector), McLean Mill and the million dollar paramedic bureaucracy?

Or will city have to downsize, contract out and like Los Angeles firemen that double as lifeguards, provide ambulance service again?

Rob Frankow,Port Alberni

Did Lunney violate oath?

To the Editor,The Hippocratic

Oath is an oath historically taken by physicians and other healthcare professionals swearing to practice medicine ethically and honestly.

When reading over this historic and important document, a reader will notice the line - “That I will be an advocate for patients in need and strive for justice in the care of the sick.”

With this in mind, it seems to me that our own MP, James Lunney, who is also a doctor, went against his own Hippocratic Oath by voting against Bill C-398.

(The bill) would have would have enabled Canada’s generic drug manufacturers to provide inexpensive life-saving medicines to Africans suffering from AIDS and other curable diseases who can’t afford brand-name medicines.

But in the end, the motion was defeated by only seven votes by the majority of Conservative government including our very own good doctor.

December 1 was

World AIDS Day and should have been a great moment for Canada to recognize the major step our nation had taken to move towards an AIDS-free generation.

Instead, our Conservative government could not to rise above the politics, was not an advocate for people in need, and could not strive for justice for those who need it the most.

Mike McDowall,Port Alberni

Too many rules too many rulers

To the Editor,We are overgoverned

and overregulated.Think about it:

we have far too many civil servants which most of the time do nothing, except come up with new regulations to keep themselves occupied and justify their useless jobs or positions.

Let’s cut half of them out of the system; then we, the contributing taxpayers, would have less of a burden to carry.

Stand up and elect people who care about people and not only about themselves.

Booster truths: revealing caffeine’s dark side

Are you one of the millions of people who

wake up and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea first thing in the morning? Does that hot beverage help to start your day?

Caffeine in regular coffee and tea is the most common drug in the general food supply and it does a good job of increasing alertness and offering a stimulating boost.

There has been a lot of research into the effects of caffeine and the results are mixed.

In general, for most adults, reasonable amounts of caffeine can be helpful and offer benefits.

Moderate consumption is about four regular (250ml sized) cups of coffee per day, which is the equivalent of 400 mg/day of caffeine. Depending on the size of container you use, this may equate to two large mugs of Tim Hortons or Starbucks (or comparable coffee shop’s brew) daily.

Caffeine can have some negative effects as well as healthful benefits, and therefore, too much caffeine can be problematic. Evidence is mounting that there could be adverse effects on heart

health, bone health, behaviour, bowel health, cancer risk and fertility.

For people who have asthma attacks or headaches, caffeine has a positive effect on blood vessels that may be helpful. On the other hand, with the stimulating effects of caffeine, bowels may work overtime to cause disruptions, especially for those who suffer from intestinal problems.

Also, there are links between long-term high caffeine intakes with a decrease in bone health. Taking calcium-rich foods, along with adequate vitamin D is important to protect overall bone strength.

There’s hidden amounts of

caffeine in various products, including medications, chocolate, energy drinks and pop. Depending on what you eat/drink and take daily, the accumulated levels you consume may be more than the recommended upper limit of 400 mg. For children, in addition to pregnant and nursing moms, caffeine effects can be harmful.

The amount of caffeine in energy drinks is more than what is recommended for children. Currently, Health Canada states that children aged 12 years and under should have less than 85 mg of caffeine per day depending on their

age. This means that one energy drink (ie. Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, etc.) can easily put children over their restricted caffeine limits.

Too much caffeine can cause nervousness, irritability and sleeping problems. It is not recommended that children and young teenagers use energy drinks.

In addition, mixing energy drinks with alcohol can be a dangerous combination for anyone.

Avoiding caffeine altogether is not necessary and keeping daily amounts to a moderate level may be healthful for many people, so, enjoy that morning brew.

The money was raised through internal fundraising as well as a corporate matching donation.

Port Alberni’s Sea Cadet Corp, 109 RCSCC Alberni, received a gold banner from the Vancouver Island Division of the Navy League of Canada at their Annual Awards Banquet in Sooke on Nov. 17.

The banner was awarded to RCSCC Alberni for their hard work, dedication and overall growth demonstrated this past year. This is the first time RCSCC Alberni has achieved such a high level of proficiency. RCSCC

Alberni grew from eight cadets in September 2011 to 20 cadets in June 2012.

The sea cadet corps is under the direction of Commanding Officer, Capt. John Cloke, who is assisted by Lieut. Brittany Thurber, Acting Sub-Lieut. Tia Botta and Naval Cadet Kraig Doskotch. The corps senior cadet is Chief Petty Officer Chelsea Anderson, a student at Alberni District Secondary School.

The corps is involved in the local community.

Recently they worked with the Royal Canadian Legion to conduct the annual Poppy Campaign, Candlelight Vigil and Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Young people 12–18 years of age may enroll in the program. The corps meets each Thursday at the Port Alberni Cadet Youth Centre, 4210 Cedarwood St. Interested cadets are encouraged to show up or contact Capt John Cloke at 250-730-0944 or e-mail [email protected].

HOCKEY / Bulldogs tweak roster. A18

MIDGET HOCKEY/ Bulldogs ready to rock Vic. A18SPORTSArmada sets sail

WAWMEESHG. HAMILTON

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Consistent effort and establishing an up tempo style marked the first tourney of the year for the Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior girls basketball team.

The Armada played at a tournament at Woodlands School in Nanaimo where they went 3-1 and took third place in the 12 team tourney.

“The girls played hard and proved that they are a deep

team,” head coach Al Seredick said.

The team scored victories over GP Vanier and NDSS before running into old foe in Dover Bay.

The Armada were up by at least seven points at the half. But a combination of a smothering Dover Bay press defense and foul calls took the wind out of the Armada’s sails. “We didn’t handle the pressure, but to be fair to Dover they pressed well,” Seredick said.

Armada players Laurissa Jimmy, Nicole Irg, and Julia

Hudson earned players of the games honours.

“We’ve got a deep roster though and everyone has the ability to make a contribution this season,” he said.

The Armada is athletic, Seredick said, so he is developing an up-tempo transition offense and a man-to-man defense.

The team played a league game against Frances Kelsey Tuesday and is playing at Ballenas Secondary this weekend.

Above, Nanaimo Storm’s Chelsea McIntosh (front, in blue) holds an Ahousaht Mystic Suns player in check during the girls division final at the Samuel Family Junior Invitational in Port Alberni last weekend. The Storm won the game 45-34 and first place.Below, Nanaimo Native Sons Josh Seward gets big air and two points against Ahousaht in the boys division final. Seward scored 18 points but it wasn’t enough as Ahousaht took the game 60-42 to win the tournament.Eleven teams competed in the event.

Lessardlaunches

It’s a new season and new surroundings for a former Armada hoops player.

Danielle Lessard who graduated from ADSS last June. Lessard plays for Victoria’s Camosun College Chargers womens team this season.

She scored 13 points and had two rebounds in a 77-35 win over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats last weekend.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ Jared Wilson, left, grapples with Jarrett Brown of the Cowichan Valley Capitals on Friday at Weyerhaeuser Arena. The fisticuffs lit a fire under the Bulldogs, who came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Caps 3-2.

Bulldogs trim rosterThe Alberni Valley

Bulldogs weren’t as busy as other teams leading up to the Dec. 1 roster deadline.

However, the team made three roster moves that the team feels puts them in a good position leading up to the final Jan. 10 roster freeze, according to a team press release.

As of Dec. 1, each team in the BCHL is given 25 cards for the remainder of the season.

Included in those 25 cards are all players that are currently on the roster.

Therefore, a team that has 22 players on their current roster will have only three moves available to them leading up to the final January deadline.

This includes signing prospects

out of junior B or major midget, signing veteran players that are released by major junior teams, and trading for players.

Any player that remains on a team’s injury reserve after Dec. 1 counts as one of those 25 cards even though that player doesn’t currently take up an active roster spot.

Earlier this week, the Bulldogs traded Nathan Craft to the Langley Rivermen for future considerations. This move immediately freed up a roster spot for

defenseman Brandon Halls, who was cleared to resume full play after undergoing emergency appendix surgery a month earlier.

The Bulldogs also removed defenseman Daniel Delbianco from the active roster. Delbianco was presented with a plan to get him back into game shape after undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason but instead of practicing with the Bulldogs and getting into game action with a local junior B team, he chose to leave the club and go back home.

“We wish Daniel all the best in his recovery and conditioning and hope to see him playing in the BCHL again soon,” assistant coach Adam Hayduk said in

the press release. In the final move

leading up to the deadline, the Bulldogs released 20-year-old American-born forward Chris Tracy.

Tracy was picked by the Bulldogs at the start of this season after briefs stints this season with the Langley Riverman and the Surrey Eagles.

These roster moves leave the Alberni Valley Bulldogs with an active roster of 21 players and in a position to pick up a 20-year-old player before the Jan. 10 roster freeze without necessarily having to move any personnel.

However, if the right opportunities do present themselves, the team has up to four moves to strengthen the team’s depth.

‘We wish Daniel all the

best in his recovery...’– Adam Heyduk

Midget Bulldogs

The Van Isle Ford Midget A Bulldogs are on a roll.

Last weekend, the midget Bulldogs beat Nanaimo 5-2 on Friday. They also beat Nanaimo Tier One 7-3 on Saturday. And on Sunday, they shut out Victoria Tier three 5-0.

On Nov. 24, the Bulldogs beat Peninsula 5-2 and on the Nov. 25, they tied Sannich Tier Two 2-2.

This weekend they play in Victoria.

WrestlersdominateCow meet

Wrestlers from Port Alberni had a strong showing at the Cougar Invitational tournament in Duncan.

ADSS and EJ Dunn finished second in

the senior and junior divisions, while Neill placed 10th in the junior division.

Fun By The Numbers

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Chilliwack demonstrated how they used this system to put agenda packages together, download them to iPads, and even how directors could link to reports and make comments to them, she said. Hartwell immediately saw savings in terms of paper, photocopier

There are official channels to go through to advance the initiative but the upside makes it worth pitching.

“I think it’s the thing of the future and I think we need to get on that bandwagon,” Hartwell said.
