Teens becoming mothersThey are more than just a statistic, say two young women raising children and going to school

WAWMEESHG. HAMILTON

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

On Monday morning Janine Thompson awoke and tended to her

daughter Madison then prepared breakfast for the two of them.

Thompson dressed her daughter, packed her things, gathered her keys and books then left to drop her daughter off at Hummingbird Child Care Centre while she attended school at VAST.

It may have seemed like an ordinary day but it wasn’t.

Thompson, 18, is a teen mom who lives in the Alberni Valley. She is trying to make a better life for herself and her daughter. She graduated from VAST last June and is set to attend North Island College this fall.

Thompson and other young moms are part of a growing number of teen mothers in the Alberni Valley.

According to a Local Area Health Profile from the Vancouver Island Health Authority, Port Alberni has more teen moms (104 per 1,000) than either the B.C. (30 per 1,000) or the Island (43 per 1,000) average.

At Hummingbird, Thompson said she was aware of the report’s finding but says there are mothers’ lives behind the lifeless number.

“It’s not an easy life because as a mom you’re responsible for two lives,”

she said. “We might be teen moms, but we have hopes, dreams and goals just like everyone else and we’re working towards them.”

Thompson was 17 and living with her boyfriend at the time when she noticed back pain and weight gain. She took a home pregnancy test and it was positive—she was pregnant. An appointment with a doctor at the clinic confirmed she was five months along.

“I was confused and worried about what would happen. But

at the same time I was happy,” Thompson said. “Before I knew people said I looked like I was glowing.”

Thompson was going to bed one night near her due date when she felt a cramp and knew she had to go to the hospital. She was in labour for nine hours before giving birth to Madison.

“My boyfriend and I cried when we saw and heard her for the first time,” she said. “It

happened so fast but after she was born I knew that our lives had changed forever.”

Thompson, her boyfriend and new daughter lived at her mother’s

residence until October when she got her own apartment. She’s since become a single mother, she said.

Thompson went to Alberni District Secondary School in the fall but later moved to VAST.

Thompson’s life is no different from other mothers: late nights with

baby or sometimes early mornings and sleep when you can.

Thompson is one of four siblings. The second eldest, she was already used to helping with her younger siblings, so she is better prepared for parenthood, she said.

She sees former high school classmates from time to time and while they are pursuing their own lives independently she isn’t envious.

“I have friends who don’t have kids. Having a child might change what you do every day but it doesn’t change who you are,”

Thompson said. “We’re just normal people and we’re still young. It’s just that we have children.”

Living a normal life is something Darla Larocque, 22, is thankful for.

The mother of two graduated from VAST last June and took a break from North Island College in December to give birth to her son Parker, who is five months old. Her daughter Channelle is three.

Larocque is up early to make breakfast for her children and husband Josh before he heads to work and she to daycare

then school.VAST teachers bring

math classes to Larocque three times a week, visiting her at home. But she still takes Chanelle to daycare then back home where the cycle starts again. “It just never ends,” she says with a laugh.

Going to school and becoming a mother has its challenges for Larocque. But her struggles with parenthood and studies pale in comparison to what she’s overcome.

Formerly of Victoria, Larocque dropped out of high school in Grade 8, got into trouble with the

law and was in and out of juvenile corrections facilities by age 16. She started using drugs and alcohol as a teen, and the drug use escalated into her young adulthood.

She and Josh were living in Port Alberni and struggling with drug issueswhen she felt something different happening with her body.

“I took a home pregnancy test but I already knew,” she said. “I was excited that we’d started something new, that I had a new life.”

The pregnancy forced Larocque and Josh to reckon with their lifestyle. “We had something to live for and a reason to better our lives,” she said. “I didn’t want our baby to have the kind of life that we did.”

The pregnancy was difficult, she said. “I was really sick for the first half of it [with morning sickness] but I was all right after that.” Her daughter was born the day she was due, on the first snowfall of the year.

Cory Jones from DFO sets up the hose that will load chinook smolts into a net pen off the end of Somass Mill, next to Fisherman’s Wharf, Tuesday morning. Jones and others from West Coast Aquatic and the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association loaded this pen and a smaller one at Centennial Pier.

Net pens stocked with Chinook fryWest Coast Aquatic,

through the Barkley Salmon Committee, has stocked three net pens with 100,000 Chinook fry in the Alberni Harbour.

This year’s project follows a pilot completed last year with a test pen and

10,000 fish.Two 50-foot-square

pens, frames and floats donated by Mainstream Canada have been stocked with 45,000 fry each near Somass mill. A smaller test pen with 10,000 fry is located right at Harbour Quay.

“In three, four and five years, these fish will return as adults to the upper inlet and hang around where they were released until ready to head up-river and spawn,” Bob Cole noted in a press release.

The test pen off the

side of Centennial Pier is visible to the public. Volunteers ask that people respect the “no trespassing” signs, and to call the posted numbers if there is a problem with the net.

The smolts will be released over the next two or three weeks.

SD70 will use $900K surplus to balance budget — this year

WAWMEESHG. HAMILTON

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

School District 70 officials want to use the district’s $900,000 surplus to balance its debt and keep existing programs and services.

SD70 secretary treasurer Lindsay Cheetham outlined the plan to trustees and the public at their May 13 meeting.

According to Cheetham, the district is spending $900,000 more than it is brining in. “We can’t spend what we don’t have,” he said.

Cheetham cautioned trustees about pontificating about inadequate funding on the part of the provincial

government. “But if we don’t have the funds we shouldn’t be spending them.”

The district is either going to have to find some revenue somewhere or restrict spending, he added.

While programs and services are maintained for at least this year the plan comes at a cost as three teaching positions will have to be eliminated.

The hurt could come in next year’s budget though. The district will be forced to replenish its surplus as well as find another $500,000 to offset the loss of Ministry of Education funding protection.

Using up the surplus is too risky, trustee Pam Craig said. “Other

factors could come up and we’d have no recourse, no fall back.”

Cheetham said that there is about $60,000 left over and that staff are still crunching numbers to buttress the surplus. But registering a deficit triggers a formal process, and a plan would have to be developed with the Ministry of Education to deal with it, he said.

More than 88 per cent of the budget is salaries and benefits costs, Cheetham said. “There’s a good chance what we find will be in employee cuts,” he said.

Cheetham will bring a final budget for adoption at trustees next [email protected]

From / A3“I was a little scared

but I was excited about living a new life.”

Larocque and her small family got a boost in the form of settlement money from a car accident she’d been in years before. But it wasn’t party time, like it might have been in the past.

“We paid off fines, got a place and filled it with what we needed,” she said. “It really got us on our feet.”

Larocque says she sees other 22-year-olds who don’t have kids and admits that she sometimes envies their freedom.

“Sometimes, I feel like I’m 22, have two kids and stay at home. I feel like I’m 30—I feel so old,” she said. “But at school I get to act my age with other mothers who are my age.”

Larocque and Thompson had goals and dreams before

they had children, and they haven’t surrendered them just because they’ve become mothers.

Larocque wants to become a youth worker and work with youth who are high risk and have addiction and behavioural issues.

Thompson, meanwhile, is determined to become a human service worker and is set to attend North Island College to achieve her goal.

“I don’t want to live on reserve and be just a stay-at-home mom. I want more for us than that,” she said. “I know that having an education will help us.”[email protected]

City help on hold for hockey teamWAWMEESH

The Alberni Bulldogs’ fiscal fate will hinge on a decision from the Alberni-Clayoquot Region District.

Team officials met with ACRD Alberni committee members on May 23, chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said.

“ACRD staff has been directed to meet with Bulldogs staff to

explore a sponsorship program that would help the ACRD promote recycling and re-use in the Valley,” Dyson said.

“This is something that would be mutually beneficial, not just a grant or subsidy.”

On May 12, Port Alberni city councillors voted to table a motion denying the Jr. A hockey team’s request for a reduction in current debt with the

city. Instead, councillors

will consider supporting a 50 per cent reduction in operating fees for the next two years.

The team originally asked for a 50 per cent reduction on their ice rental fee but the plan isn’t possible.

According to a report from Parks, Recreation and Heritage director Scott Kenny, the Community Charter forbids the city from

offering an advantage to a private for-profit business.

The city can however offer a reduction in operating costs. The team currently pays $4,300 per month in rental costs and $1,000 per game for playoffs.

The team owes the city a total of $63,500 in fixed and additional costs plus payments to the end of July. The team’s last payment to the city was $10,000 in January.

The amount will remain on the city’s books as accounts receivable items.

Team officials committed to working out a repayment schedule with the city.

Councillors Jack McLeman and Hira Chopra wanted to

know where things would stand with the city once the team is on better financial footing.

“Where are we in the pecking order to be paid extra money,” Coun. Jack McLeman said.

The city would have first dibs, Bulldogs business manager Lucas Banton said. “If profitable, the city will be first in line to be paid.”

The Bulldogs are a big part of the community but business is business, Coun. Cindy Solda said.

“The debt is a lot of money. It’s a hard decision to make. It’s the taxpayers we’re representing,” she [email protected]

Talks no ‘secret’: cityClosed door

discussions between the city and Port Alberni Port Authority over two lots of land beside Canal Beach are a normal course of business and not secretive, city manager Ken Watson said Monday at a city council meeting.

The city is in talks with PAPA that, if fruitful, could see Canada Alberni Engineering shipyards expand its waterfront operation next to Canal Beach.

According to Watson, the city advertised a request for proposals for Lot A beside Canal Beach, adding that industrial use was favoured. PAPA responded and negotiations ensued.

An audience member at Monday’s council meeting criticized council for the closed-door talks.

Private talks between the city and an interested party about leasing city property aren’t unusual, Watson said.

Amalgamating with another school district and sharing services may be the only thing that stops further school closures in the Alberni Valley.

SD70 trustees passed a motion calling for a meeting with the Vancouver Island School Trustees Association to discuss budgets, funding and

shared services, as well as other financial discussions.

The meeting is considered an emergency and should be held as soon as possible, SD70 chair Larry Ransom said.

The motion’s bland wording belied a radical concept that Ransom said is necessary to stem the financial bleeding that is plaguing the district.

Specifically, Ransom wants to

start a discussion about amalgamating school districts and sharing services. The district could seize the initiative with the discussion or eventually be seized by it through a government decision.

“We need to show leadership,” he said.“If we don’t do it government will do it for us, and we won’t like the picture.”

Ransom advocated for the district to launch its own talks

with other districts. But trustees agreed that VISTA would be the best starting point.

“We need to entertain a discussion about what are our next steps,” Ransom said.

There has already been discussion provincially about sharing legal services, payroll and resource allocation, secretary treasurer Lindsay Cheetham said.

Doctors ordered to pay $180K in damagesWAWMEESH

G. HAMILTONALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A trio of Alberni doctors is being forced to pay a total of $180,000 in damages to a colleague after the Supreme Court ruled that they defamed him.

In her ruling, Madam Justice Deborah Kloegman ordered that Dr. Shane Longman, his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Hankins and fellow physician

Dr. Akushla Wijay pay $50,000 each in general damages and $10,000 each in aggravated damages to Dr. Magdy Fouad.

The group leveled what the court determined were unfounded accusations against Fouad.

Kloegman also noted that Wijay breached Fouad’s privacy and assisted with defaming him in front of West Coast General Hospital staff.

The defending doctors were competent physicians and well-liked by their patients, Kloegman noted. “However, their uncollegial conduct, as relatively novice doctors, towards a newcomer who had much to offer them in the way of special skill and experience, is inexcusable.”

Fouad moved to Port Alberni in 2009 and according to the ruling was the object of immediate

scorn by the three. “From a very early stage the defendants questioned his competency and were openly disrespectful to him.”

Fouad studied medicine in Cairo, Egypt then spent five years in the UK specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and was a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He received

two years’ post-speciality training in gynecological urology. He moved to Canada in 1990 and was the department head for obstetrics and gynecology at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, until 2009.

In April 2010, Fouad wrote to VIHA Chairman of Family Practice and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and complained about unprofessional

behaviour of Longman, Hankins and Wijay.

Hankins and Wijay requested that the college conduct a formal review of the professional conduct and patient care of Fouad, even advising that they had a list of cases that concerned them.

The college carried out a review and in May 2011 concluded that the Fouad “met the standard of care applicable in British

Columbia,” the ruling noted.

The college found merit in Fouad’s complaint against Longman and Wijay. The college ordered a remedial review in both cases.

The matter between the three carried on in 2011 and 2012.

In 2011, Fouad’s lawyer asked the three for an apology. None was produced so court action was [email protected]

V ICTORIA – The NDP’s holy war against changes

to the Agricultural Land Reserve got nastier last week, as it became clear it was defenders of the status quo who were being mowed down.

Ever since legislation was tabled to divide the ALR into two zones, with greater emphasis on social and economic needs to help viability of farms in the Kootenay, Interior and North regions, almost all the protest has been from unaffected areas. And much of it depends on emotion rather than fact.

In the legislature, Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog rose to praise the late Dave Stupich, who birthed the ALR sacred cow as agriculture minister in 1973. Krog likened Stupich to the Biblical Daniel for his bravery in preserving

farmland for our children’s children.

Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley did his signature “jiggery pokery” routine, this time accusing cabinet minister Bill Bennett of being “giddy” at the prospect of paying off his friends with development land. Before he gets too jiggery outside the protection of the legislative chamber, he would be well advised to find some evidence.

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, who at least represents an area being given broader latitude for secondary uses on farmland, warned of drought in California. The history of this is currently a hot topic in the quasi-religious climate change debate.

Meanwhile in the real British Columbia, life and farming go on under

the existing farmland protection regime.

The largest ALR exclusion in B.C. history took a big step forward last week, as a federal-provincial review panel issued its report on the Site C dam proposed for the Peace River.

The panel noted that the dam would flood 2,775 hectares of farmland, representing all seven categories of soil quality. Opponents use a figure about twice that size, as if all the affected land was farmable.

The panel accepted that this land, including the

small amount of micro-climate bottom land, represents 0.2 per cent of the Peace region’s farm receipts. I would add that’s because what is farmed at all is mostly growing hay, which requires minimum capital and labour. “It

has potential, to be sure, but its unique and irreplaceable contribution would be for those labour-intensive crops like vegetables, which are not remotely practical in a labour-short region,” the report states.

We have to bring in Mexican guest workers to get vegetable and fruit crops off in the Fraser Valley and Okanagan. For a five-month growing season in the bush outside Fort St. John? This is a classic example of the religious fervor that replaces reason among the southern faithful of the ALR.

And how is the status quo working? Summerland council just voted to swap 80 hectares of flat farmland for 90 hectares further away in the Summerland Hills.

The town is on restricted lakeshore terrain and the council wants to increase its urbanzone, using the communityneed provisions that are enhanced by the current legislative amendments.

No dog house for Bulldogs

Do the Alberni Valley Bulldogs deserve the city’s help in straightening out their finances?

The Bulldogs, Port Alberni’s Jr. A hockey franchise that plays in the B.C. Hockey League, is in trouble. Despite the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society taking over ownership of the team two seasons ago, the entity is not thriving. They are a year behind in paying ice rental fees to the city, and have asked for a 50 per cent break for the next two years to help catch up.

The team has struggled off-ice with the community non-profit ownership model, and present business manager Lucas Banton admits that openly.

It is worrisome that the team has gone through several business managers in the past two years, but it seems like the PAJHS is finally on track. Their plea for help from city council is testament to that.

The team struggled at times on-ice last season, before pulling out a nailbiting—if you’re a hockey fan—late-season run for a playoff spot that fell a few points short. The Bulldogs have had few shots at a league championship in its 12-year history in Port Alberni; but this is the BCHL, not the Dub (Western Hockey League) or the NHL.

One of the goals of the BCHL is to groom players for collegiate hockey, and the Bulldogs excel at that. As educational advisor Tom McEvay says, the team also teaches players to be community-minded. Players are involved in schools, with the regional district’s recycling plan, participate in community parades and make regular appearances at public events.

The Bulldogs have always been known as the community’s hockey team, even before the junior hockey society bought them. They have the second highest attendance on Vancouver Island and even mainland teams are envious of the number of loyal fans packing the ‘Dawg Pound’.

The players have given a lot to this community, both on and off the ice.

Do the Bulldogs deserve help? We say yes.— Alberni Valley News

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Children used as ‘guinea pigs’

To the Editor,Re: Teaching by

tablet, May 8.Using children for a

tablet pilot project at Alberni Elementary School is dangerously irresponsible.

Before anyone commits the health of their child to this uncontrolled wireless experiment, I strongly suggest parents, teachers and doctors research on the Internet, the adverse health effects of wireless technologies.

Research, medical appeals and videos are only a mouse click away.

No one has the right to jeopardize the health of a child due to ignorance.

Better lookto Plan B

To the Editor,Anyone still banking

on the Raven Coal mine project to assist with building an alternate road, or rebuild rail to Port Alberni should start looking at Plan B.

Compliance Energy has announced record losses in their 2013 financial statement,

and on March 31, 2014, I-Comox Coal Inc. officially withdrew from the Comox Joint Venture, owners of Raven coal project.

The company also recently missed their own self-imposed deadline to resubmit their application to the government, after their initial coal mine application failed miserably last year and was rejected.

Let’s hope the local transportation

committee has a Plan B.

Farley Mowat never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Mowat’s infidelity to the facts can be overlooked because he was a humorous writer with an

endearing crotchety personality and a passion for educating us about the natural world. Mowat’s engaging voice will forever echo inside the covers of his books.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper never lets the facts get in the way of his conservative agenda. Stephen’s infidelity to the facts should not be overlooked because

he is a humourless politician with a cold, calculating personality and an unnatural passion for power and control.

Harper’s ambidextrous voice will forever echo inside the prime minister’s office, the House of Commons, the Senate Chamber and now the office of the Supreme Court Chief Justice.

The B.C. Agriculture Council, whose board first supported and then objected to the ALR amendments, has clarified its objections. It wants flexibility for secondary uses extended to the prime farmland zones of the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island.

Community remembers Komagata MaruWAWMEESH

G. HAMILTONALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Every time Hira Chopra peers at Alberni’s harbour he can’t help but

think how one of Canadian history’s darkest moments could have been avoided if the ship Komagata Maru had docked here, at the end of the Alberni Inlet instead of in Vancouver.

Chopra and other Port Alberni residents of South Asian descent are attending a special ceremony on Sunday, May 18 commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident.

“We need to remember this so people will respect human rights and make sure something like this never happens again,” Chopra said. “Future governments need to be reminded to respect other people.”

According to a Simon Fraser University website,

the Komagata Maru incident happened in the early summer, 1914. The ship carried 376 Sikh, Muslim and Hindu passengers—mostly men—from British India to Canada via Hong Kong.

The ship dropped anchor in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet on May 23, 1914, but Canadian immigration authorities refused to allow the passengers to disembark because of the Continuous

Passage Act. The law required all

immigrants to arrive on uninterrupted journey from their country of origin. The law was created to curb steadily increasing immigration

from India. The passengers

protested that the law didn’t apply to them because India was then a British colony and the passengers therefore British subjects. A two-month stalemate ensued and the passengers weren’t allowed to come ashore.

The ship remained in the harbour but conditions aboard were squalid and food and water was in short supply. The ship sailed back to India but

passengers were either shot or jailed when they disembarked.

“I learned about this in school and was shocked at the injustice of it all,” Chopra said.

“It was a disaster and a dark time in our history.”

The whole incident was nearly averted. If a pair of South Asian men hadn’t been thwarted, the ship would have landed in Port Alberni instead, avoiding the inevitable human catastrophe.

Capture treasured memories of your kids

I am going to fill this column with tips for shooting

children (with a camera).

Numero uno tip is to be prepared: have the proper lens on, the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture all set and ready to go. You don’t want to fumble around with camera settings when the kids are ready.

Shoot fast shutter speeds to stop action; 1/250 of a second and use a high ISO such as 400–800 ISO, or if you have a fully automatic camera then put the camera in SPORTS mode.

Use a telephoto lens on the camera so that you will not be in their faces while taking the photographs and fill the frame with the

child or try filling the frame with just the child’s face.

Should you be shooting indoors, bounce the flash off

of a white ceiling or a white wall to get a much softer light. Please don’t make them sit there with a “cheese” expression

on their faces: let them be themselves while you photograph, bring them to the dike, the water park, or the woods and set them free.

Relax, be patient, and be yourself; kids know when you are overdoing it. If you are photographing

someone else’s kids then get rid of mom and dad or make sure that they understand that they cannot intervene.

You might be lucky and get to have a full hour to photograph them before they get bored with the camera. If you take

the photographs while you are standing up then you will get a lot of tops of heads. Instead crouch down to the child’s level to take the photographs. If the entire image is out of focus but the eyes are sharp then you have a photograph, so make sure to focus on the child’s eyes.

If possible do not take photos between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., as the sunlight is very harsh at that time and creates heavy facial shadows. Should you decide to take photographs with full sunlight on the subject then use a fill flash. Most but not all automatic cameras will fill in the deep

facial shadows when you turn on the flash outdoors. Try it and let me know.

Keep the background simple, move the subject further away from the background and use a large aperture such as f4 or f5.6 to blur the background while the child is in focus to give your images that 3D look.

Try shooting in burst (continuous) mode to tell a story.

Be sure to take lots of silly shots, you will love them in 10 years. Bring some old clothes and hats with you and let them play dress-up. Shoot a gazillion photographs and cull them later.

Any questions? E-mail me at [email protected] or see me online at www.silverstonephotos.com.

Thursday, May. 15, 2014 - Alberni Valley News A14 www.albernivalleynews.com

From / A11According to a 1914

Port Alberni News article, the men, one Sikh and one Muslim from the Lower Mainland discovered that Port Alberni wasn’t a denied port so they travelled there to try re-direct the boat up the Alberni Inlet.

The men first tried unsuccessfully to charter a boat to meet the Komagata Maru and guide it to the island port.

Undaunted, the men travelled to Bamfield to try and communicate with the ship at the wireless station on the coast. Authorities had alerted the station though and the plan failed.

A century later, standing on the shore at Harbour Quay, Chopra reflected on how Canada has changed in more than a century.

Getting into the country isn’t as hard

as it was in 1914 but there are challenges, Chopra said. People have equal access to the process but there’s economic discrimination.

“If someone doesn’t have land and money in India then you can’t visit...But if you have land and money you can,” he said. “I don’t think that argument is necessarily applied to people from other countries.”

Canada has come a long way but it has

farther to go, Chopra said. “We live in a multicultural society now and those bad, dark days are gone,” he said. “But there’s always room for improvement.”[email protected]

An industry-first sensor control system detects when CO2 levels are too high and boosts the cabin with fresh air. Research by Hyundai engineers determined that drowsiness increases when CO2 concentrations inside the cabin exceed 2,000 parts per million. Of course, cracking a window works the same way but many do not detect the onset of a sleepiness until it’s too late, while others are reluctant to let in that cold mountain air during a winter jaunt. Count me in that group.Gadgets aside, there is much to stimu-late the senses in the all-new Genesis. Its eye-catching design, with giant front grille, would not look out of place parked next to a BMW, Audi or Merc, which is precisely the intent. It’s bench-marked against such German Masters at a price segment below what one would

expect to pay for the Eu-ropean leaders. Will they hold their price in resale? – Likely not during this generation, but if the am-bitious Koreans continue to prove reliability and quality then they will.Meanwhile, an owner is going to enjoy years of driving a performance oriented in comfort and style. The fit and finish inside rivals those with which it chooses to compete for the dollars in the wallets of the well-heeled. The subtle use of leather and micro suede is classy; with Napa leather and real wood trim available as an option. Double

stitched leather seats always look good but it’s what’s inside that counts on a lengthy trip! The foam beneath in this case offers both support and comfort in the right places. Both front seats offer 12-way power adjustment and there’s a power-adjustable thigh extension with side bolsters that’s available for the long-legged.A new power trunk lid goes a step further than the new trend to enable opening by swinging your leg under the rear to pop the trunk. Tired of stand-ing on one leg with two arms full of groceries? When your pocketed key nears the trunk, it automatically opens after three-seconds. A High-Beam Assist (HBA) function

switches to low beams when an oncom-ing vehicle is detected. Other options include a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and rear door window blinds. Driver-assist safety technologies are also available in abundance for those who like the car to do some thinking for them. The new Genesis is also a statement of intent: it heralds what will be the look of the seven new less-premium Hyundai products expects to grace our show-rooms before 2016.When it comes to driving, it’s really a tale of two cars. The top-of-the-line model offers a big V8 5-litre power plant, with 420 horses at its disposal. Ironically, it’s best enjoyed jogged along at low speed on the highway, where it has the feel of an old-fash-ioned big family sedan. (It’s not a lot of fun on the twisting lakeside roads of the Okanagan.)Cars destined for the Canadian market will come with an all-new HTRAC

active wheel drive (AWD) system. Says Hyundai: “Performance of the vehicle’s all-new platform was validated in some of the world’s most demanding driving environments, including Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife and Korea’s Yeongam Formula 1 racing circuit.” The large variety of proving grounds offered by the northern Okanagan was much more appealing to me. And especially so in the car equipped with the 311 horsepower, 3.8-litre GDI V6 engine. Flipping between the Normal, Eco and Sport modes and tapping the gear-changing paddles on the steering wheel made for an enjoyable drive. Little lean in the corners and sprightly up hill. Both engines are coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a SHIF-TRONIC manual mode. The base price is $43,000, $48,000 gets you the Luxury version, and $53,000 loads up the tech features. If you want the V8, get ready to spend $62,000.

driveway

It’s big, it’s heavy hand and it’s light on fuel

The all-new, third generation 2014 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited.

The all-new, third genera-tion 2014 Toyota Highland-er Hybrid Limited AWD tips the scale at 2,200 kg (4,850 lbs.)It’s not a svelte vehicle.Inside, this Highlander can carry up to seven passen-gers.

So when I knew that I’d be logging more than 1,000 ki-lometres in a week, perhaps you’d think I’m a little crazy to want to take this (rela-tively) heavy and large SUV along for the ride. Normally, I would too. But there’s a word in its name that made

me want to take this beauty of a beast for the long haul: Hybrid. As I entered the Flaxen (aka beige) adorned cabin, I reached for the “Eco Mode” button underneath the redesigned centre stack. I gave that a push. The Eco mode is a feature that lessens the throttle response in an effort to help save fuel. You can still do all your normal daily driving duties, it just helps you keep money where it should be: in your wallet. And keeps the fuel where it should be: in the tank.Granted, in Eco Mode, it doesn’t give you the peppy acceleration you might like. Then again, if prompt acceleration is what you’re after, skip the Eco Mode and that’s exactly what you’ll get.The suspension is composed of front Macpherson struts

and a rear double wishbone type, trailing arms set up. Toyota gets an A+ for ride comfort. And it’s arguably one of the best in its class.Aiding in establishing a serene setting is a host of creature comforts like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, second row captain’s chairs, easy access

to the third row, keyless entry, navigation, an 8-inch touchscreen and much more. We’ve already established its size, and while it fits up to seven, it doesn’t feel that big to drive. Sure, you need to make sure you watch its width but manoeuvring it around in parking lots isn’t a chore at all. Thanks to its rack and pinion-type, elec-tric power steering, you can move around graciously.Though this is not my first hybrid SUV that I’ve tested, I am always excited to see how well these machines

perform in regards to fuel economy. After all, there’s a 3.5L, V6 engine under the hood, which is then matched with an electric motor, a Sealed Nickel-Metal Hydride battery and an Electroni-cally Controlled Continu-ously Variable Transmission (ECVT). The result is a net 280 horsepower. There’s also a 1,587 kg (3,500 lbs.) towing capacity.Looking at the estimated fuel results, it’s rated at 6.8L/100km in the city and 7.2L/100km on the highway. Keep in mind the aforementioned stats about its size and weight and those numbers are really impressive. My real world numbers? A combined average of 8.9L/100km. Not bad. Not bad at all. Most of my driving was done on the highway so the hybrid sys-tem doesn’t have a chance to run off electricity alone at those speeds. Sun or snow, this SUV is ready for it all. With fuel prices hovering around the $1.50/litre mark, the more kilometres I can get out of a tank, the better. And the Highlander Hybrid made me a very happy gal.The conclusion: The 2014 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited AWD is competent, potent and a fabulous sport utility vehicle even in Eco Mode where the fun is a little bit restricted. The MSRP for the 2014 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited AWD is $52,695.

LacrosseAn Alberni Tyees player, wearing red, evades his check in a bronze medal game against Peninsula No 2 last Sunday at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. Eight teams competed in the First Annual Alberni Valley Icebreaker Tournament last weekend. Alberni placed second in their division, beating Comox and Nanaimo buy losing to Victoria.

◆ LACROSSEGet up and walk for your health

Is the act of walking taken for granted? I think so! Done

so often; it’s easy to neglect its necessity.

It may be another reason golfers live five years longer than others.

That doesn’t include golfers who ride motorized golf carts, however. If you golf regularly by walking, (one to two times per week), the physical effort cannot be denied its place in healthy living.

A full-length golf course may occupy 150 acres of land. When a person walks 18 holes, the walking may add up to five or six kilometres! At a short course like Hollies, a walker

can log two or three kilometres during nine holes of play. Double that for 18.

These may be critical times for non-walkers, generally speaking. Further, they may not be aware of it. Not unlike the Industrial Revolution of the last century, we too are impacted

by our own computer revolution. The difference however, is the increase of people choosing to sit on a couch or in front of a computer screen.

Appearing restful, it’s deadly in disguise. It’s been stated that a sedentary lifestyle is more lethal than smoking.

There is a saying, “If you stop, you’ll stop.” And like a machine

needing lubrication, so too does the body. Divorcing oneself from a computer to walk is no different than disciplining oneself to diet or exercise. Sitting is now more than ever considered a disease and more problematic is its lack of acknowledgement.

Golf courses are great for walking. The land is soft and kind to one’s joints, unlike cement or concrete. The geography is not level either, providing opportunities for one to climb or negotiate side hills.

These are the prescriptions for mildly stimulating one’s heart rate and cardiovascular system. I’m not a doctor, but these claims seem legendary, bordering on common sense now. Golf is also different than a normal walk.

From / A18Being engaged

in a game, one experiences the fun of play while walking. A normal walk can be boring and to the uncreative mind, lifeless. Consequently, golf evicts everyone from the experience of boredom.

And while you’re golfing, ask yourself about your pace. Do you walk leisurely, like death on feet, or do you stride with a sense of life, of confidence? When one lives on Vancouver Island, the feeling is “lay back”….but not back and die!

So, when playing golf, walk with a pace of liveliness. That’s what’s meant when hearing the phrase “look alive!” And live…an extra five years!

(Editor’s note: An unfortunate editing error saw the Alberni Golf Club’s men’s report reprinted under the women’s Pitch n’ Putt column on May 8. We have included last week’s Pitch N’ Putt results at the end of this column to make up for it.)

In the ladies nine-hole Low Handicap division at Alberni Golf Club on May 13, Kath Stolth won Low Gross and Marie Swain

Another Men’s Club Sunday is in the books for Alberni Golf Course.

The low gross for the day was Vito Caldarulo with an impressive 73. Great game, Vito. The low net in the low handicap division was old lefty himself, Keith Gauthier, with a smooth 65. In the high handicap division it was Cal Davies on top, shooting a 69.

The closest to the pin winners were: Cal Davies on No. 2, Glen Trask had the charity closest to the pin on No. 4 (taking home $30) and Sam Parhar won both No. 13 and No. 17. Parhar also won $50 for the only birdie on No. 17; the rest of the par 3’s were halved.

In the skins competition there is only No. 16 left in the low handicap division. There was no winner on Sunday, which means the carry over for next week will be worth $135.

In the high handicap division, No. 7 was won by Dave Mann, with Wolf Suhr winning No. 8, Mann again taking No. 9, Don MacGowan capturing No. 15 and finally Phil Anker winning the skin on No. 18.

Next week is another open day with the usual money pot, closest to the pin and skins competition up for grabs. Be sure to book you tee time starting at 7 a.m.

The following Sunday, May 25 will be our first scramble of the season, with Twin Travel and Cruises hosting the event.

Passed away peacefully at WCGH May 09 2014, surrounded by his family.

Glen was born on the family farm outside of Wapella Sask. March 14, 1939

Glen is survived By the love of his life Arlene, his Son Doug, Daughter Glenda (Rick),

Sister Pat (Dave), numerous Grand Children, nieces and nephews, all very loved and involved in Glen’s life, and other family members.

Glen moved to White Rock 1950.  He started working in 1956 at Coastal Tugs. Glen joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957.  While at Esquimalt, he went to the home of a ship mate, and there at the McClean farm he met and fell head over heels in love with Arlene.

Glen and Ar were married in 1959, and after 55 years they were still crazy in love.

Glen left the Navy in 1970, and moved from their little home on Hampton Rd. to Port Alberni.  Glen and Ar completed building their home on Sproat Lake, where the family lived and played until 2009.

Glen worked in the Steam Plant as a Power Eng. (1st class)  at the paper mill for M&B. Glen was a well respected, very fair to work with and for.  Glen ended his career as Asst. Chief Eng. in 1994.

Glen took early retirement, not because he had to, or really wanted to, but, because it would save a job for a younger person in the plant.  That is just the type of guy he was.

After retiring, Ar and Glen travelled all over the place  in their 5th wheel, camping on the beach in Mexico, then in Yuma.  They danced and just had a ball.  They also cruised and travelled to many places.

Glen enjoyed woodworking, gardening etc.  Glen and Ar were avid hikers, spending many days exploring the trails around Port Alberni, and lots of different places.

Ar and Glen took up Ballroom dancing, and spent many a night dancing and having fun.

Glen is sadly missed by all his family.  A private celebration of life for family members and close friends will be held at a later date.

The program will provide a subsidy of up to $250, or half of the cost of an installation of broadband equipment to new residential and business customers within Xplornet’s industry leading 4G rural broadband satellite footprint. This will significantly reduce the costs of installation, costs that may have been a barrier to the adoption of high-speed Internet.

“The government of British Columbia deserves significant praise for a program that helps break down one of the last barriers to full connectivity in the province – namely the high cost of broadband installation in remote parts of BC. Now, even the most remote British Columbians can affordably benefit from the transformative power of high-speed Internet to connect them to the global economy,” said Xplornet President Allison Lenehan.

Xplornet is the country’s leading rural broadband Internet provider and takes pride in connecting over 200,000 Canadians to the world. The commitment to offering every Canadian reliable, affordable and fast Internet is shared by an ever-expanding network of over 450 local dealers, including 60 in British Columbia alone.

For more information about Xplornet high-speed Internet and how you may benefit from the British Columbia Broadband Satellite Initiative, visit xplornet.com or call 855-494-1079. For complete details on the British Columbia Broadband Initiative please visit www.gov.bc.ca/bcbroadbandsatellite.

RELAY FOR LIFE: | Cancer Society plans special survivors’ event for July 12.

With the Relay for Life cancelled for a second year in the row due to low registration numbers, the Canadian Cancer Society has proposed a new cancer survivors’ celebration.

This new event will take place July 12 at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, next to Bob Dailey Stadium. The society is hosting a Survivor Celebration instead to honour and recognize those who have fought cancer.

“We know that one of the touching moments of Relay

is when all the community’s survivors come together to walk the track and we didn’t want to lose that experience this year,” explains Tracy Berg, community giving coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Vancouver Island Region.

“We heard feedback from the community including our volunteers, saw the declining participation and felt a need to reenergize the spirit of Relay in the area.”

The Survivor Celebration

will take place at 12 p.m. and involve a light lunch at the Multiplex and then survivors walking a lap around the track to celebrate their survivorship.

Interested participants can RSVP to [email protected] or call the local Port Alberni unit office at 250-724-2912.

“We are excited to be doing something for survivors in Port Alberni this year,” adds Berg. “We hope the community will join us in celebrating these survivors on July 12.”

SHEEP to SHAWLArrowvale Farm and Campground hosted its annual Sheep to Shawl event last Saturday, exhibiting the fine art of fibre from the time it’s taken off the sheep until it is processed by hand and made into an object.

Garrett Jolicoeur, left, shears a sheep in front of an appreciative audience.

Yvette Denis, bottom left, spins wool from raw fibre on a spinning wheel.

Pavla Barbaric, below, allows Abigail Oliver, 3, to touch the angora hair she has brushed from her rabbit while Jen Banfield watches in the background.

Arrowvale hosts spinners and weavers every few weeks throughout the year, but this is their big event.

Art’s going to be cool at the pool

The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley in collaboration with the City of Port Alberni is looking for artists to design original permanent murals to be installed at Echo Centre Pool.

We are proposing a series of different sized murals that will cover the walls in the pool area at Echo Centre. These murals will be made out of aluminum composite panels. All materials will be supplied.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to be involved with this project, to help beautify the community pool.

School-aged artists featured

The Rollin Art Centre is excited to

present an entire art show dedicated to local elementary school children. This exhibit started May 13 and runs until June 7, and features children who took part in Art in the Schools at four elementary schools.

Come out and meet these talented children at their artists’ reception, Saturday, May 24 from 1–3 p.m. Join us for refreshments and wander the gallery showcase their artwork.

Landscapesin oil are next

The Rollin Art Centre gallery will feature local artist Murray Claughton from June 10–July 5.

gallery on Saturday, June 14 from 1–3 p.m.

May 17 banner deadline

Individuals, families, schools and groups have until May 17 to sign up for the annual art banner program, sponsored by the Arrowsmith Rotary Club. There is a $10 registration fee to cover the cost of supplies. Forms can be picked up at the Rollin Art Centre Tuesday – Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The painting event is planned for May 22–25 at the Kinsmen Community Centre.

planned for Echo Centre later this month.

Arts Around

Alberni Art Rave is looking for artists wanting to showcase their work at this summer’s second annual art event.

This year’s 11-day show is again to be held in Port Alberni’s historic train station from July 25–Aug. 4.

All work/projects should be for sale by commission; there are no size restrictions and projects in any medium will be considered.

This year’s show revolves around Henry David Thoreau’s quotation, “What would human life be without forests,

those natural cities?”Art Rave organizers

intend that Thoreau’s quotation will be a unifying theme for the show.

Artists are asked to consider the above statement and design a project/ art piece that depicts their creative reaction to the quote.

For full details visit the Art Rave facebookpage at Alberni Art Rave, or e-mail:

[email protected].

The deadline to enter art for jury consideration is Friday, May 23.

HANDOUT

The GordsIan Tyson alumni Gord Maxwell, Gord Matthews and Gordon Lee Worden rock at Char’s Landing on Sunday, May 18 from 8–10 p.m. The Gords are just one of several standup musical acts coming to the Argyle Street venue for the long weekend.
