Refugee family closer to Valley

The Port Alberni Refugee Sponsorship committee has provisionally been assigned a Syrian refugee family with several children, although no date has been set for the family to arrive.

The family is in Lebanon but hasn’t been cleared to travel to Canada yet, according to PARSC spokesperson Leslie Wright.

PARSC has raised more than $21,000 in its bid to bring a Syrian refugee family to resettle in the Alberni Valley.

Man charged with B&E

A Port Alberni man has been charged with break, enter and theft as well as breach of probation in connection with an incident at Pescadores Bistro on Johnston Road, in the early morning hours of Jan. 12.

Marc Chase appeared in court this week to answer to the charges.

Port Alberni RCMP responded to a suspected break and enter after someone from the bistro reported their front door had been forced open and a cash box was stolen, Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden said.

Polar-dipped charities

The Bread of Life and Alberni District Secondary School Band were the recipients of a cool $1,450 from the PEAK FM Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s Day.

John Douglas said $1,200 was raised for the Bread of Life thanks to a fundraiser by the See Group, Little Bavaria, Funk Trunk and McGill Engineering; the band received $250.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni will soon have its much loved kiteboarding launch pier back in action, according to Port Alberni Port Authority CEO Zoran Knezevic.

The current kiteboarding launch at the Harbour Quay Marina has been inaccessible due to a broken access ramp for months despite new abutments installed last year.

“We engineered and put new abutments on the ramp last summer,” said Knezevic.

“That one failed after we spent more than $25,000 for re-engineering that.”

Currently, the ramp—

located beside the Maritime Discovery Centre—is sitting on the float and is unsafe to use. The port authority is waiting on the replacement to arrive.

“We have ordered a

replacement ramp because the existing ramp is too heavy for the existing float,” said Knezevic.

The kiteboarding launch should be operational by the end of January, he said.

Public access to Port Alberni’s waterfront may be set to improve with a proposed

new boardwalk along the north side of Fisherman’s Harbour.

The Port Alberni Port Authority was up in front of city council on Monday night to publicly introduce their plans to improve Fisherman’s Harbour—and ask for $300,000 in city funding and an in-kind sewer line.

“We are asking for the city to help us with the boardwalk,” said CEO Zoran Knezevic.

“The quotes we got from the contractors were between $250,000-270,000.”

While the cost isn’t low, port authority director of public relations and business development Dave McCormick said that the whole community will benefit. He added that $300,000 is the maximum request to the city (excluding an estimated $60,000-80,000 sewer line) and that in-kind donations of lumber could make

the eight foot wide and 950 feet long boardwalk cheaper.

“We will be providing greater access to the waterfront,” said McCormick. The port authority will also add 20-30 parking spots as well as transfer float plane service from Centennial Pier to the Somass pier.

The port authority’s plans are in line with the results of the 2007 Uptown

and Waterfront Redevelopment Study, McCormick added.

Recommendation No. 13 in the study stated that the city and PAPA should “pursue agreement

with Somass Mill to allow a public boardwalk and limited associated public parking along the south edge of its property (fronting the Fisherman’s Harbour).”

The port authority purchased a narrow strip of land beside the Somass Mill back at the end of 2014 with plans for a fuel dock and possible increases in public access to the area. That strip could

also be used for both current and future events, Knezevic added.

“It’s a long stretch of land that stretches from Harbour Road all the way to the water,” he said. The land provides access to the Somass pier.

“This will allow us to develop the area,” said Knezevic. That development includes improvements and a fuel dock on the Somass pier and a

boardwalk on their purchased lands.

The project is part of the original Island Coastal Economic Trust funding that PAPA received in 2011. The $3.45 million was to pay for Centennial Pier as well as other improvements to Fisherman’s Harbour.

The improvements to the Somass pier are the “last pieces of the puzzle,” according to Knezevic.

City council’s steps towards regulating the storefront sale of medical marijuana continued to be a hot topic at its meeting on Monday night—and the divide is growing.

“We’re coming into a crucial point right now. We’re actually going to be creating a bylaw that’s not supporting what the federal law is and I’ve got strong concerns,” said Coun. Denis Sauve.

Sauve, along with Mayor Mike Ruttan, have been staunch in their opposition to imposing any municipal regulations on what they consider a federal matter.

However, Sauve’s motion to abolish all marijuana dispensaries within the city was defeated as Sauve was questioned on the practicality of his motion.

“What are the steps to shutting them down that we haven’t taken already?” Coun. Sharie Minions asked.

“Us making a motion

is not going to shut down the five shops that we have.”

Currently, storefront marijuana dispensaries are illegal under the Criminal Code and medical marijuana is regulated federally. However, Alberni’s municipal council has chosen to follow in the steps of Vancouver and Victoria. The former has regulations in place and the latter is considering them.

Council was again challenged by resident Neil Anderson on how establishing a regulatory scheme did not condone and encourage the spread of the storefront dispensaries.

“There’s one question I have to ask. How have the changes

adopted tonight not given a green light to these dispensaries?”

Ruttan said that while he had not personally voted to regulate dispensaries, the city had explored all possible other avenues and was trying to do something, rather than nothing.

“I have consistently not voted in favour because I do not believe that it’s the right thing for us to do,” said Ruttan.

“But it doesn’t matter—this is what council has voted for and I believe that council’s position is fairly clear. It is this council’s best attempt to control the uncontrollable.”

Coun. Dan Washington, who had voted in favour of regulation in the past, said he was torn on the issue but hoped that this would control the surge of shops opening up.

“I think this process is going to weed out a lot of them that can’t meet the criteria.”

Upon council’s request, city planner

Scott Smith brought forward updated zoning bylaws and business licence requirements. As per the proposed zoning bylaw, storefront dispensaries would only be allowed in general commercial, service commercial, highway commercial and core business zones. In essence, this restricts them to the Uptown and Johnston Road business cores.

Dispensaries must also remain 300 metres from the closest school, 1000 metres from any other dispensaries, not have an ATM or have their store used for any other purpose other than the dispensing of marijuana.

Music for the fun of itKATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Do you want to rock?

If you’re a teen between the ages of 12-18 and playing your

instrument alone in your basement, Todd Flaro wants you.

Flaro said he’s heard one too many tales of friends’ kids, talented as anything but with nowhere to perform.

“There was one girl, she’s 16, she’s quite good but she just plays the guitar and sings in her basement,” he said.

“There’s another lady, her son is 15, plays the bass and he just plays in her basement. Then there’s the 15-year-old boy of some friends of mine, phenomenal drum player, but he just couldn’t find anyone to play with.”

As someone who’s been passionate about helping kids for decades, Flaro saw a way to combine that desire to help with his passion for music.

To that end, he’s launching a non-profit music performance school called Alberni Teens Can Rock.

“I felt there was a need. I have a passion for it. I

don’t know exactly what I need but I have a passion for it and I’m finding people to help me.”

One thing that Flaro has decided on is that he’s not going to teach music from scratch.

“You have to be intermediate or advanced,” he said.

“We’re not a teaching organization—we’re coaching. There’s too many people in this town who make a living or subsidize their living by teaching and we don’t want to take a dime away from them.”

The benefit to getting kids out of their basements and onto a stage will be huge, Flaro believes.

“By them being able to perform they’re going to be able to showcase their skills both as a group and as individuals. And that will help build their self-esteem.”

As both a member of the Port Alberni Toy Run and a cadet leader, Flaro has seen the benefit of getting kids involved in their passions.

“I’ve volunteered with kids for 31 years. If you build their confidence you get better citizens—you get kids that turn into good adults that get further in life. Self-esteem promotes so many good things.”

Getting to perform provides a place for kids who might not be interested in sports to

still feel like they’re a part of something bigger than themselves.

“Maybe you don’t fit in in soccer. Maybe you don’t fit in in volleyball or whatever. Just get [the kids] out of the basement,

get them out in front where they should be.”

At worst, Flaro says he will have tried.

“If it works, it works. If it don’t, it don’t. At least we gave it a shot.”

At this point, the group won’t be taking brass or wind instruments either.

“We have to focus and cut it off at some level,” he said.

“So it’s electric, acoustic and base guitar, drums, piano, vocals and we’re hoping to have someone

to teach the kids sound and lights.”

Flaro’s goal is to teach kids who already know how to play or know the basics of sound and lights how to perform on the big stage—not take customers away from music tutors.

“So if you’re not musically inclined this is still a venue for you because you’ll be able to do the music and the lights.”

Flaro is doing his best to keep the costs down.

“We’re starting very minimal. There’s a $50 sign-up fee but after that there shouldn’t be any costs.”

Any money that is raised from the sign-up fees will go back into the program itself.

“We’re not trying to make money off of this and any money that we do make is going to go towards sound equipment,” he said.

That will allow the program to have communal sound equipment, meaning that as long as you’re part of the program, you can use the equipment.

“So you’ll be able to use that in your performances.”

vatar, the future-fantasy blockbuster that beat Titanic as all-time Hollywood box office champ, has finally been unseated by the latest Star Wars space opera.

I watched Avatar on TV over the holidays for the first time since its 2009 release, and was able to see past the bombastic special effects to examine it for what it is, an anti-capitalist propaganda film.

Psychopathic military commander teams with evil mining executive to blast and slaughter their way to a chunk of rare mineral, ridiculously named “unobtainium.”

Giant tree, home of highly evolved Na’vi people and their delicate jungle ecosystem, is toppled for sadistic fun and

profit, before nature’s collective strikes back.

Canadian director James Cameron helped the global anti-development network use the movie in its celebrity attack on

the Alberta oil industry. Now the story line is being employed again in B.C., in an effort to revive the 1990s “war in the woods” that led to the creation of

Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park on Vancouver Island.

Protest tactics are being refined.

Targeting just outside the boundary of the vast park established 20 years ago, giant trees are named and an Avatar-style narrative of unbridled greed

is spoon-fed to urban media. There’s a “Tolkien Giant” now,

although I’m reliably informed it is not one of those trees that gets up and walks around in the Lord of the Rings movies. This tree is also protected from logging, as are most of the poster trees used for propaganda and fundraising.

The network uses multiple front groups.

Vancouver-based Wilderness Committee stages urban protests and issues news releases, while Ecojustice lawyers fight forest company injunctions against direct actionsthat disrupt legal logging. An employee of the B.C. branch plant of Sierra Club lurks, apparently coordinating media and protesters.

A 1990s remnant called Friends of Carmanah-Walbran issued a statement Nov. 9 announcing “autonomous action” by three protesters to disrupt logging.

How many of us sing in the shower, keep a beat with our pens on the desktop, catch the latest tunes on our smartphones or stop to listen to a busker playing an instrument for change?

Whether we sing for an audience or solely for ourself in the shower, we all have something in common: music.

Sadly, music programs have been shrinking in schools for decades, and children are growing up without benefit of exposure to the theory or history of music. And for those who do take an interest, there are precious few places for them to grow.

Enter community youth advocate Todd Flaro, who has created Alberni Teens Can Rock—an opportunity for youth who already have some knowledge and skills in playing

an instrument or singing to get out of their basements, join together and play music for the sheer joy of it.

Flaro has a passion for music himself, as well as experience dealing with youth in cadets. We applaud

him for his effort, and hope this program will gain strength in the coming months.

Flaro is not alone in the Alberni Valley for promoting music with youth: there are teachers within the school system who are making sure music is still important to students; the Zattzoo Project honours the life of a young musician who died in an accident, and fulfills the wishes of his family to promote music in youth.

We are heartened by such efforts, and applaud those who see the value of music in the growth of our community’s young people.

No one I’ve ever met wants to live in darkness. Darkness in its blackest form renders people who can see with healthy eyes blind as bats. Darkness makes me, and everything and everyone around me invisible. If someone struck a match in pitch darkness the light would identify them and highlight facial features as it thrust them out of obscurity into visible form.Christmas is a season when we are reminded how God entered this broken struggling world ‘as a light shining in

the darkness.’ In the person of Jesus the light revealed a face; God in human form. The fl ame on the face of Jesus revealed a God who is kind, personable, powerful, compassionate, strong, truthful,

and totally for us rather than being against us. It only takes a mustard seed of response, or faith, to enable us to draw closer and discover for ourselves if Jesus is real, or just a shadowy dark mirage. May 2016 be the year of His light shining brighter for us.

Coastal guardians deserve helpTo the Editor,

Re: On the Mark, Jan. 5, ‘Ahousaht people deserve training.’

As politicians, both MP Gord Johns and MLA Scott Fraser are wise to pursue a formal bestowal of recognition on the Ahousaht people.

From a tourism business perspective, formal recognition would help create the impression that government has taken action to prevent

further whale watch vessel catastrophes.

However, for these local politicians, the reasons for wanting to recognize the Ahousaht people most likely lie in the selfless actions taken. While in service to strangers, the rescuing of 21 whale watchers from rough, frigid, Pacific Northwest seas, the Ahousaht people revealed their true nature.

Now we know them as intuitive guardians of the West Coast. We know them for caring for others unknown to them, know them

for their depth of compassion. When contemplating the possibility of training Ahousaht people in maritime rescue and establishing a rescue centre way out there, they deserve the support of the ‘entire West Coast community’, the province and federal agencies.

Gouged at the pumpsTo the Editor,

I looked at Gas Buddy this morning and why am I not

surprised to find we are still being gouged at the pumps?

Oil is rock bottom and businesses are closing and jobs are being lost because of what’s happening in the oil industry. Yet I am paying 31 cents a litre more than Edmonton; and if you want Island prices we are paying more than Courtenay/Comox too.

Does anyone not care that with the prices so low we have seen no reduction in food prices or anything?

How many Albernites who used

to work in Fort Mac have been laid off? How many businesses stand empty? ICBC is raising rates—why, when claims are down? BC Hydro is raising rates—why, so we can export more power when our loonie is low?

When the rich say let them eat cake, has anyone priced a can of Spam lately? But keep quibbling about important issues like weed outlets while real issues are put on hold. Ya man, that like makes sense. Not!

From / A8Not their guys, you

understand, just masked individuals willing to lock themselves to equipment or wander into a road-building blast zone, forcing work to stop for safety reasons.

These are among the actions that forced the logging company to go to court for an injunction.

Cast in the role of evil corporation is Teal-Jones Group, a B.C. forest company trying to operate in what is now the most environmentally restricted forest in the world. It keeps about 2,000 people employed in logging and its sawmills in Surrey, where investments have been made to handle second-growth coastal timber as well as what

little old-growth they are allowed to harvest.

Protesters have dubbed their latest target, the tiny 3.2 hectare cutblock 4424, “Black Diamond Grove” for media and fundraising purposes.

Teal-Jones forester Chris Harvey provided me some information to counter protester claims. Block 4424 isn’t being logged, although it was

permitted last fall. Protesters are targeting other operations, none of which are in the contentious Walbran “bite” area next to the park.

Teal-Jones has not only received permits and worked with environmental organizations, its operations are independently certified by the Canadian Standards Association.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge granted an extension of the injunction protecting Teal-Jones’ operations on Jan. 4. The judge wasn’t swayed by protesters packing the Victoria courtroom, and upheld a 50-metre safety zone around working equipment in the Walbran Valley until the end of March.

A Wilderness Committee spokesman

with no evident forestry qualifications was appalled. He will no doubt continue to issue news releases and write his own version for left-wing fringe publications that seek to perpetuate an urban culture of revulsion for logging.

From / A3The port authority

will spend about a million dollars of its own money on improvements to the pier.

“We have to do the resurfacing of the asphalt, bringing water and power to the area, a ramp and abutment installation, then the decking [the main portion] of the

pier,” said Knezevic.“We have about

$680,000 left [of ICET funding],” he added. The port authority didn’t end up getting to keep all that funding: $150,000 was earmarked for a permanent structure on Centennial Pier that never came to be and so the money was clawed back as per ICET’s funding

formula.That funding

formula could also get the city back 25 per cent of what they put in, Knezevic said.

But Knezevic said that the benefits of the project outweigh the costs.

“It will enhance the area, provide better service to the float planes, better access to the commercial

fishing vessels and also for people going to view the boats at Fisherman’s Harbour.”

There are plans to include a viewing platform on the boardwalk itself, McCormick added.

Tax scam returns: RCMPA well-known scam

is making the rounds to residents in the Alberni Valley again.

Numerous Port Alberni residents have this week received phone calls from a fraudster posing as a representative of the Canada Revenue Agency, said Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden.

The caller advises that the citizen has

overdue tax debt and provides an avenue to pay the amount owing. “The caller has become aggressive and threatening in an attempt to scare them into paying the fictitious debt,” Hayden noted.

The caller will usually demand that the citizen pay the debt promptly if not immediately through wire transfers and

other immediate bank payment methods.

“It’s important that the public recognizes that these phone calls are a scam. No personal or banking information should ever be provided over the phone prior to verifying the authenticity of the caller,” Hayden said.

Further information relating to this well documented phone

scam is available online on sites including the Canada Revenue Agency website.

If you receive a call pertaining to this scam, do not provide any information and hang up on the caller. You can call and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre -- 1-888-495-8501 -- or www.antifraudcentre.ca.

City council agreed to waive approximately $9,000 in fees to help the Port Alberni Friendship Centre with the launch of their new daycare facility on Fourth Avenue.

Council had previously donated two small lots adjacent to the currently existing building.

The Friendship Centre also asked the city to waive the development cost fee (approximately $20,500) but Coun.

Sharie Minions said she was concerned that it would set a precedent for other not-for-profit daycares.

Minions added that the city would reconsider its decision if the development fee proved to be “the chopping block” for

the project.If the city chose

to waive the development cost fee, it could not do so directly.

Instead, it would have to pay itself the fee out of its general revenue [email protected]

Port Alberni residents might soon know a lot more about the waters of the Alberni Inlet thanks to proposed new ocean monitoring equipment from Ocean Networks Canada.

The organization already has projects running out of Port Alberni, business analyst Teron Moore

said.“Ocean Networks

Canada already runs a large research infrastructure that’s based out of Port Alberni and runs 800 kilometres out from the Port Alberni Inlet out to the west coast off shore,” he said.

“We run scientific instruments and we gather data and do science and research.”

But while that allows

the organization to collect data far into the ocean, Ocean Networks wants to gather some information that’s closer to shore.

Ocean Networks Canada, based out of the University of Victoria, run the Neptune Observatory on Mallory Drive in Port Alberni.

“It’s a fiber-optic cable that runs

from Port Alberni through the Alberni Inlet and through an 800-kilometre loop.

It covers all kind of interesting ocean ecosystems, measuring all kinds of parameters from salinity, temperature, depth of the ocean, seismic movements, tsunamis and more,” Moore said of the existing infrastructure.

From / A6Proposed business

licence regulations would require that all marijuana dispensaries have a business licence at a cost of $220 from the city and a recognition that a city business licence in no way represents a compliance with senior government laws. The $220 cost is the same as a liquor outlet business licence. Under current bylaws, not having a business licence is subject to fines of $150.

In order to comply with the requirements of the business licence, storefront dispensaries must not serve minors under the age of 19, have a monitored fire alarm and security system including video surveillance, limit hours of operation between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., have transparent shop fronts and have product signage warning stating that products sold on the premises are not Health Canada approved.

Applications, council directed, will be approved on first come, first serve basis.

Responding to concerns raised by Sauve regarding grandfathering in the existing shops, Smith said he believes there is no need to grandfather in shops that opened before the bylaw is implemented.

“Grandfathering only comes into play when the business was legal before a bylaw was introduced.”

However, Smith added that a legal opinion may be necessary to allay council concerns.

Three readings were given to the zoning and business licence bylaws for storefront marijuana regulations.

The proposed changes will go to a public hearing before they can be passed by city council. The hearing is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. in council chambers and council can vote on it at the meeting that same [email protected]

Plans are already underway to install them in Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Hartley Bay, Campbell River and

Tofino—and Port Alberni could join that list.

“These are very small pieces of infrastructure that will be put in closer to the shoreline to measure some of the shore

based parameters that we’re very interested in,” he said. That data could be applied to improve marine safety, environmental monitoring and seismic safety, including developing an earthquake warning system that gives more advanced warning than what’s currently possible.

“Some of those instruments will be hydrophones, which will listen to the acoustics in the water, water quality properties

like temperature and salinity to try and get a baseline idea of what is the normal state of the water and how that changes as things like climate change and industrial activity change.”

The shore-based equipment will allow researchers to get up close and personal with marine life.

“We’ll have underwater video cameras to look and interact and engage with that underwater ecosystem in a way that doesn’t typically

get done without that visual interaction.”

All of the information gathered both in the Alberni Inlet and all around the ocean is open to everyone, Moore said.

“All of the data that comes in on our instruments is available to researchers globally via a data management system call Oceans 2.0,” said Moore. Ocean Networks will hold a community engagement session later this month.

Observatory to measure marine statsThese are pieces of infrastructure that will measure shore based parameters.

SCENE HEARD&SONJA DRINKWATER’S

Sonja Drinkwater has her eye on the local social scene and she welcomes your input. Let her know of any celebrations you’d like to share with our community.

Scott Beckett holds regular sessions of boot camp in Echo Centre at various times during the day. All of their information is readily available in the Winter Leisure Guide from Parks and Recreation, copies available at Echo Centre. The Sunshine Club have various programs for adults aged 50 plus and knitting is one, also table tennis and too many to mention. Check out their newsletter at Echo Centre for all of the wonderful programs that are offered. The museum also housed in Echo Centre is a great place to take children on those rainy days. They can make and hoist their own Jolly Roger flag, check out how to write in calligraphy and see information about pirates

from Treasure Island to Vancouver Island. The library is also a place besides taking out books that you can have free internet, great for those people who may not have a computer or easy access to one. Echo Pool is handy for Wood School Elementary to take in their PE as it is within walking distance. Not only for children there are various times for all to enjoythis excellent exercise.

Want to know what this is? Check out the Pirates Exhibit at the Museum.

Table tennis is their game of choice, Erika Dunn watches while her part-ner Nobuko Hirayama aces a shot.

Kevin Perry enjoys using the free internet at the

local Library.

In loving memory ofVIVIAN DEER RICHMOND

December 31, 1921 – January 16, 2006

Dear Mom (Nana)It seems like only yesterdayYou swam beside the dock.

It seems like an eternitySince last we had a talk.

All kinds of things don’t taste quite right,From fudge to pickled beets,

And nobody can duplicateYour culinary treats.

We’re not so good at mending pantsOr shirts that come apart,

But we can stitch our memoriesOf you upon our hearts.

Shyannah would have loved a song,Her own that fi t just right,

You could have played the organ tooFor a skit or show some nights.

It’s sad Shy never met youBefore you had to go,

But since you’re such a part of us,You’ve met more than you know.

Volunteers needed for Jr. Achievement

The Junior Achievement of BC program is in need of volunteers from the business and leadership community to present its JA Economics for Success program at Alberni District Secondary School in February.

The program is designed to inspire students in Grades 8–10 to stay in school and plan for success. Junior Achievement has delivered the program to Grade 9 students in the Alberni Valley since 2009, translating into nearly 2,100 students.

This year’s program will be run on one day, Thursday, Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at North Island College. There will be 10 classes of Grade 9 students taking part.

“This worthwhile program benefits from local professionals, business owners and tradespeople from diverse backgrounds

and occupations,” said Cherie Williams, Scotiabank manager and a volunteer recruiter with JABC.

“The time commitment is one day in the classroom and a couple of hours of training ahead of this. Come and find out if this is a way you can help inspire and engage local youth.”

The deadline to register as a volunteer is coming up quickly: Wednesday, Jan. 20. Interested parties can register online at www.jabc.org/volunteer; JABC program coordinator (Central and North Vancouver Island) Gail Stroud will conduct the screening process.

Volunteers will be paired up, will receive the Economics for Success kit and will receive training in a multitude of ways: a group session on Jan. 27 from 4–7 p.m. at North Island College; a webinar and self-learning from JABC.

Province opposes pipelineTOM FLETCHERBLACK PRESS

The B.C. government is close to releasing its plan to provide “world-leading” prevention and response to land-based oil spills, but that progress isn’t enough to change its opposition to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Environment Minister Mary Polak announced Monday the province’s final submission to the federal review of the project confirms it still has not met B.C.’s five conditions for approval of heavy oil

pipelines.Polak said she is

preparing to present legislation this spring to establish new standards for land protection, after discussions with Trans Mountain operator Kinder Morgan Canada and other companies. B.C.s final submission to the National Energy Board continues to recommend the pipeline twinning not be approved, but Polak said that is not the final word.

The Trans Mountain pipeline has been operating one line for 60 years.

SSport heroes:Sport BC honours 10 Alberni leaders

Ten of Port Alberni’s sporting leaders were honoured Monday night at a Sport BC Community Sport Hero award ceremony at the Best Western Barclay Hotel Plus.

Ida Oberg (softball), Cal Davies (softball), Erin Anker (wrestling), Tom McEvay (wrestling), Kelly Fines (lacrosse), Dave and Jill Sherlock (multi-sport), Jas Purewal (rugby), Larry Spencer (badminton) and Doug Stoutley (blind sports) were all honoured for their commitment and dedication to their respective sports.

Oberg stepped onto the softball scene in the Alberni Valley in 1973 when her son started playing ball. She did whatever was needed of her that season. By 1979 she became the league’s associate secretary, which required her to look after the club’s bingo. She still holds the position of treasurer and has also been registrar, provincial playdown director and scorekeeper.

Davies has served as president of Alberni Valley Minor Softball for more than 20 years. He was nominated as a sport hero because of his tireless efforts to maintain AV Minor Softball as a strong local sports organization.

Anker has been the head wrestling coach at the former Neill Middle School for 11 years and a volunteer coach with Alberni Wrestling. “It is hard to measure the impact

Erin Anker has had as a volunteer coach,” a nominator noted. “She has introduced countless numbers of youth to the sport of Olympic wrestling. Many have gone to compete successfully and win provincial and national championships.

“While this success is impressive, even more impressive is their growth and development as human beings.”

McEvay has been the leader of Alberni Valley Wrestling for more than 25 years and has helped build the club into one of the strongest sport organizations in the community. McEvay’s leadership and dedication to the club has helped earn it a reputation of being one of the strongest youth wrestling programs in the province.

Fines was introduced to lacrosse at age 10, when he snagged balls for his brother’s Port Alberni Senior B team. He played bantam lacrosse for the Port Alberni Lacrosse Association until it folded in 1980. In 2002, he and an ex-teammate resurrected lacrosse

in the Alberni Valley and now serves as president of the revamped league.

The Sherlocks have worked in tandem for 11 years as coaches of the Alberni Valley Track Club. They work year-round with their athletes and have conducted conditioning programs for hockey teams.

Purewal has been involved with the Black Sheep Rugby Club for more than

25 years as a player, coach and club president. He has been instrumental in the development of a first-class program.

Spencer has been a member of the Alberni Athletic Association for 35 years and serves as president as well as president of the adult badminton club. As well as being an active player, he also coaches youth despite having no children of his own in the program.

Stoutley is a tireless ambassador in the field of sport and recreation for individuals who are blind. He is a retired PE teacher, coach and avid golfer and continues to volunteer his expertise to BC Blind Sports, Canadian Blind Sports and the Canadian Blind Golf Association.

Some of Port Alberni’s sporting community honourees gather for a group photo at the Best Western Barclay Plus Hotel on Monday.

He is a product of the Calgary Royals Minor Hockey

From / A7The program won’t

supply instruments however—anyone at an intermediate or advanced level should already have those, Flaro said.

“You might have an amp but not an adequate amp to play at say, Glenwood Centre.”

The group’s performances will start off with a showcase on Sunday, Feb. 28 at The Rainbow Room.

Interested in performing? Signup forms can be picked up and dropped off (along with the $50 signup fee) at Serious Coffee, Triangle Music and Home Hardware. Auditions are Feb. 12 and practices will run Feb. 12-14 and Feb. 27-28.

But the showcase will be the beginning, rather than the end of it.

“It’s going to continue on. Several places, and Serious Coffee’s one of them,

want to hold acoustic nights,” said Flaro.

“So instead of the drummer he’ll have a cajon instead of a drum set and it will be a little more intimate

and laid back.”He also sees the

group playing at the Toy Run sponsored First Night roller-skating at Glenwood Centre at the end of

2016.“I’m also a member

of the Toy Run so I know that free talent on stage? They’ll take it. I played there with my daughter and

another girl who’s going to be a part of this program.”

Flaro has also spoken to Five Acre Shaker Productions in hopes of getting his

kids to perform there next year.

“They might dedicate one of the stages for us or for youth bands.”

COMING UP: New Solstice Festival an

artistic collaboration.ARTS THE

New projects, fundraising kick 2016 into high gearThe next art

exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre will be something special from local Tseshaht First Nations Chief Hugh Braker.

This exciting exhibit showcases a chosen part of Braker’s personal collection of items from his world travels to Sri Lanka, Philippines, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Brazil and elsewhere.

The exhibit opens to the public Jan. 20 and will run until Feb. 5. Stop by the gallery Saturday, Jan. 23 from 1–3 p.m. to meet Braker and talk about his adventures.

Bring in books

The Rollin Art Centre is now accepting gently used books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles for their annual book sale, which will take place May 6–7. We cannot accept any National Geographic, encyclopedias, Reader’s Digests or textbooks.

Please drop off donations at the Rollin Art Centre, inside, under the staircase in the wooden box.

This is one of the Community Arts Council’s biggest fundraisers. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located

at 3061 Eighth Ave. or call 250-724-3412 for more info.

Pool murals deadline

The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley, in collaboration with the City of Port Alberni is looking for artists to design original permanent murals to be installed at Echo Centre Pool for our Phase II project.

Different sized murals will once again cover the walls in the pool area at Echo Aquatic Centre. If you are interested, please drop by the Rollin Art Centre, Echo Centre or call for more details at 250-724-3412. Complete application packages and guidelines are available for pick up at the Rollin Art Centre and Echo Centre.

Deadline for all applications is Jan. 15.

CAC renewals due

This is a reminder

to all current Community Arts Council members, and everyone else who would like to help support the council, that all memberships will now be renewed in January. This annual membership date will be for everyone.

If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2016, pop by the Rollin Art Centre today. The cost is only $17 for adults, $12 for seniors and $22 for a family. As we are a non-profit organization we rely on the generous support of art patrons like you. So please, help support the Community Arts Council today so we can help support local artists tomorrow.

It’s a special O party

Alberni Valley Citizen of the Year Nancy Wilmot is holding a birthday party and Special Olympics’ fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 6–9 p.m. at Char’s Landing. Local musicians will be

performing, tapas will be served throughout the evening and there will be a silent auction and Loonie-Toonie items. Admission by donation.

All proceeds to go to Special Olympics programming, because sometimes smiles do have a price tag.

Call to artists

Art Rave will be sponsoring an art show at The Rollin Art Centre for the new Solstice Festival taking place in June.

This will comprise original art that is for sale, and will run from June 17–30 as part of the Solstice Arts Festival. Artists from all media are invited to submit work to the curators in a digital format, on or before March 18, to

[email protected].

Preference will be given to pieces 24x24” and smaller if the work requires inside display. Sculptures or other works that can be displayed outside are encouraged and

no size requirements apply.

Video artworks will also be welcomed. Additional details on the show, the terms of sale and the festival can be obtained from the email address above.
