The 31st annual Toy Run might have been smaller than usual but Port Aberni Toy Run chair David Wiwchar is still happy with how it went.

“It was considerably smaller than usual because of rains on the other side of the Island but everything went very smoothly,” said Wiwchar.

While the amount of money raised isn’t known yet, Wiwchar said it won’t be as high as usual.

“We’ll definitely break even, maybe make a little on top of that but we only had 600 bikes compared to 1,400 last year so we were down quite a bit.”

Port Alberni RCMP responded to reports of an armed male in the area of John Howitt Elementary School just before noon on Sept. 21.

“The Port Alberni RCMP detachment responded to a report of a male wearing camo gear walking towards the John Howitt Elementary School carrying a rifle,” said RCMP media liaison Aaron Aasen.

Police quickly found the man, but not before School District 70 locked down John Howitt Elementary

and both Jericho Road church and École des grands-cèdres in the Klitsa School building on Tebo Avenue were informed.

“No criminal intent was identified and the situation was quickly resolved,” said Aasen.

According to the RCMP, schools in the area enacted a lockdown procedure as a precautionary measure. School District 70 sent out a letter informing parents and stated that as Sept. 21 was a professional development day, no students were there.

Four years ago, Brett Wasylyniuk was four years old and bald, having gone through chemotherapy for a rare form of cancer. It was the first year he served as a junior rider with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock.

The tour began last week in Port Alice and will see

the team complete a 1,000-kilometre bike ride in Victoria after spending two weeks raising money and awareness for pediatric cancer research.

When the tour arrives in town this Friday, Sept. 25, Wasylyniuk hopes to be bald again—only this time he wants his head shaved. The boy, now 8, has raised $500 to lose his locks, which have grown well past his eyebrows and nose over the past year.

“I’m proud of him for doing it,” Wasylyniuk’s father Richard said.

Port Alberni did not have a rider this year, but the central Island adopted media rider Hilary Eastmure and RCMP Const. Mihai Ilioi, both from Nanaimo. Wasylyniuk

is Ilioi’s junior rider this year.

The riders tackle the Hump on Highway 4 Friday morning and should be at the top of the Hump by 11:17 a.m. They will cruise into the Walmart parking lot around 11:49 a.m. for speeches and head shaves. They have several

more stops planned in the community throughout the early afternoon.

Wasylyniuk will have his head shaved during the team’s stop at AW Neill Elementary School around 1:30 p.m.

After an afternoon break riders will head to Boston Pizza for a family fun night and dinner, from 5:30–7:30 p.m.

Right after the Tour de Rock concludes, Wasylyniuk and his father will head to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for regular bloodwork. They only have to make the trip once every six months.

“They’ve said now that it’s been three years the odds of that type of cancer coming back have dropped quite a bit.”

“It’s an initiative that the B.C Economic Development Association is promoting with municipalities across British Columbia,” city of Port Alberni economic development manager Pat Deakin said. October is Small

“It’s an effort to get councils out and familiarize them with the issues that small business faces.”

Deakin said that while councillors already conduct informal business walks to get input from local small business owners about what issues are important to them, more organized walks could still be important.

“How’s your business going,

what could we do to improve it?” Deakin said.

Each business visited would be asked four or five prepared questions, he added.

“If the owner or the manager wanted to talk further we would simply make a note and arrange to speak to the individual again.”

Larry Darling made his first appearance in Port Alberni court on Sept. 16, 2015, on a

charge of first degree murder.

Darling, 51, was arrested Sept. 11 in Surrey, in connection with the 2006 murder of Port Alberni

Alberni wrestler vying for top women’s wrestling title

Using those items as weapons will not only be within the rules, it will be encouraged in the main event of the Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling card this Saturday (Sept. 26) in Nanaimo.

In what is being billed as a Canadian first, women wrestlers will be competing in a tables, ladders and chairs match. Port Alberni’s Riea Von Slasher will take on American competitors Krystal Bubbles and Mary Jane Payne in a triple-threat match to determine the first-ever VIPW women’s champion.

“I’m not a huge fan of heights, so I like to throw people onto [the ladder]. It’s great to slam people onto,” says Von Slasher.

She said when VIPW started, a women’s championship was never in the plans, so “it speaks volumes” about the division that a title is being introduced.

“I think I deserve [the belt], but it doesn’t always work that way. Whoever wants it more will get it,” Von Slasher said. “It would mean a lot to me.”

Von Slasher wants to hit her powerbomb and curb stomp manoeuvres and win, of course, but she also wants the match to be memorable, and she said the women have it in them.

“I’ve never been in a match

like this where I haven’t surprised people. The best thing people can do is underestimate me, because it makes my job easier,” she said. “But I absolutely hope that we’re able to pull off things that people go home in awe about.”

In other action, Port Alberni’s Cremator Von Slasher will face

Danni Deeds, and Bishop will take on Mike Shreddz.

The event is being held at the Departure Bay Activity Centre and bell time Saturday is 7 p.m. Tickets at the door will cost $15 or $20 for ringside.

The federal election campaign has produced a jumble

of conflicting claims about whether or not Canada has a balanced budget or a deficit, how it was determined, and whether it even matters.

The definitive word on this came out last week, with the release of the Government of Canada Annual Financial Report, signed off by Auditor General Michael Ferguson.

“The government posted a budgetary surplus of $1.9 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, compared to a budgetary deficit of $5.2 billion in 2013-14,” the report says.

“Revenues increased by $10.7 billion, or 3.9 per cent, from 2013-14, reflecting increases across all major revenue streams. Program expenses increased by $5.2 billion, reflecting increases in major transfers to persons and other levels

of government, offset in part by a decrease in direct program expenses.”

The Conservative government’s pre-election budget calculated that last year was in deficit, and this year would be the first in the black since 2008. Ottawa pundits say this “surprise surplus” was engineered with intentionally pessimistic budget estimates, so Prime Minister Stephen Harper would get a boost right about now.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau claimed last year’s surplus was partly generated by cuts to Veterans’ Affairs and Aboriginal Affairs. Wrong and wrong. Veterans’ Affairs spending was up 13 per cent, and Aboriginal Affairs

spending rose nearly 30 per cent.

Trudeau has also insisted Canada is in recession now,

which helps his suddenly adopted position that a Liberal government would run deficits for the next three years to build infrastructure.

Harper ran the biggest deficits in Canadian history after the 2009 crash, bailing out auto makers and building lots of “shovel ready” infrastructure, as did the U.S. and other countries. The question

raised by Trudeau’s plan is whether it’s a good idea to keep doing that without a financial crisis.

France, for example, has run operating deficits every year since the early 1970s, although the current

Socialist government vows to balance the books by 2017. France’s operating debt is now equal to 91 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product.

Canada’s net debt-to-GDP ratio is currently around 30 per cent, down from frightening levels in the 1990s before the Chrétien government finally balanced the budget. (Fun fact: then-finance minister Paul Martin not only cut transfers to provinces, unlike the current government, he inflicted the largest-ever cuts to the CBC. Harper’s CBC cuts were part of government-wide reductions, again due to that 2009 crisis.)

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has promised to balance the budget every year of his mandate, should he form Canada’s first-ever socialist government.

He will spend the rest of the campaign trying to reconcile this promise with the grandiose spending plans he has piled up.

Meanwhile in B.C., Finance Minister Mike de Jong may have benefited from Harper’s lowball budget.

Ring around the taxpayers

The City of Port Alberni has been talking about a ring road around the city to divert truck traffic for well over a decade. In 2004, a Harbour Road pre-design study was conducted. In 2012, a report outlined three options plus costs.

Yet, there is still no ring road. And trucks still lumber up Third Avenue,

bisecting our city via residential routes.

The issue has recently revived and returned to the council table. Only instead of a decision on the plan once and for all, we sense that another ‘study’ or ‘report’ is pending.

At the same time, the provincial government is finally looking at the feasibility of a second route into the Alberni Valley (it’s only been 30-plus years). And the Huu-ay-aht First Nation and Steelhead LNG have been talking about improving the road to Bamfield via a loop route from Bamfield to Duncan through Port Alberni on the east side and Anacla on the west.

If we’re not careful, we will lose all funding opportunities for a ring road, plus any funding that the government may be eyeing for these other projects, simply because we cannot decide on what we want.

A ring road would take traffic away from uptown and the areas of the waterfront people would like to see developed for tourists, such as Harbour Quay. At the same time it would provide those companies that operate industries on our waterfront to keep continued access to our deep-water port.

A compromise must be found or a decision made. Enough is enough.

update last week, de Jong reported that his February budget forecast is on track, with a $277 million surplus. This is despite a $300 million bill for forest firefighting, thanks to personal and corporate income tax revenue expected to be $374 million higher than budgeted. B.C. bases its tax revenue figures on federal estimates, and the ones they got early this year were clearly low.

Understated or not,

this is a nice problem to have. De Jong says that at the current pace, B.C. will pay off its accumulated operating debt by 2020.

The last time the province was free of operating debt was 1982. The big debt peak came during the NDP 1990s, with another spike from 2009 to 2013 under the B.C. Liberals.

Two-Spot, our heritage steam locomotive, at the train station recently. The exterior has been painted and it looks great.

The new Shay was the first logging loci in the Alberni Valley, operating from 1912 to 1953.

H.R. MacMillan gave the locomotive to our city in 1954. Now, if only it would run again!

A 1980–84 restoration enabled it to give tourist waterfront rides until 1993.

The loci was retired again as the boiler and firebox were very worn, needing replacement to be operational and safe.

If you would like to donate towards Two-Spots’ revitalization, or to leave an estate memorial bequest, there is a locomotive restoration fund established within the Alberni Valley Community Foundation. A tax-deductible receipt would gladly be issued.

Politics simply a horse race

To the Editor,In a horse race there

are always potential winners for eager punters to bet on.

Usually thoroughbreds end up in first, second or third places where prize purses are paid; then there are nondescript nags with no hope of winning, and always in the also-ran category.

In the current horse race dubbed the Parliamentary Steeplechase because

of its many hurdles, three snorting stallions are neck and neck and neck; they have passed the halfway mark, and are headed towards the home-stretch with hardly any daylight between them.

Their jockeys are dressed in Blue, Orange and Red silks; way behind, barely out of the starting gates, is the proverbial loser dressed in Green.

Yet the jockey in green insists that she gets the same recognition as the

three so far ahead of her; indeed, she has been able to gain inequitable media attention, including lengthy interviews on all main television networks. She told CBC’s Peter Mansbridge that she expects to “realistically” win between 12 and 15 seats, with six or seven in BC.

CTV’s Robert Fife didn’t ask her for a specific seat number, but she fed him the very same line she gave the others — that after

the dust is settled on the racetrack she will have enough seats to become an important mediator and deal-maker between factions in a new minority-ruled parliament.

In return she would expect a complete ban on tankers carrying Canadian crude oil in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on BC’s coastline.

Some dreams may come true, but on Oct. 19 punters may want to remember what CTV’s veteran journalist Craig Oliver

said just a few months ago.

“After a coarse display of ignominious horseplay and barnyard manners by the jockey in green at the Ottawa Press Gallery Dinner, he said: “She’s always been a charming eccentric, who now ceases to be charming.

“The Green Party was of little consequence in Ottawa before her tirade, and even less after.”

Paul Saroya believes that his brand new $6 million condominium proposed for Third Avenue will be a welcome addition to the uptown area.

City council approved Saroya’s proposal to have the height of his planned building exceed the four storey (14 metre) limit.

“It will be a big building with condo units for sale,” said developer Paul Saroya.

“Two bedrooms, two washrooms.”

Below, there will be eight commercial units, according to Saroya.

Saroya, who was criticized by city council for the state of his current and former real estate

ventures, said the criticism was unfair as the situations are different.

“These units will be for sale, not rent.”

Coun. Denis Sauve, who expressed concern over rental units done by Saroya in Uptown, said that for sale condo units are better than rental ones.

“Hearing that it will be sold as condos

does make me feel a little better,” said Sauve.

“But there’s still so much more I need to know about the design.”

Saroya currently owns the Beaufort Hotel and owned low-rent buildings on Fourth Avenue. Those buildings, he said, had problems from the start and turned out to be a poor

investment.According to Saroya,

problems with the buildings on Fourth Avenue included drunks intimidating tenants, as well as regular break-ins.

“I made a wrong choice with those buildings,” said Saroya.

“Guys would terrorize tenants and no one wanted to live there anymore.”

As far as the Beaufort Hotel is concerned, Saroya said he put $100,000 into improving it.

“A new roof, new smoke detectors in each room, new doors, security cameras,” he said, adding that the washrooms and kitchens in the 21-unit hotel have also been upgraded.

Plans to upgrade the building further

cost Saroya a further $60,000 but they never came to fruition due to their high cost of implementation.

“Then I got a plan for $9 million to renovate... I’m not a rich guy, just an ordinary person,” Saroya said.

“No one will lend me that much, it’s not economical.”

Saroya hopes that his new development on Third Avenue will avoid the issues that plagued his buildings on Fourth Avenue.

“I will ask for assistance from the RCMP,” he said.

“I don’t want an old lady to move in and then someone steal their purse.”

Saroya, who’s owned the uptown lot for almost a decade, said he’s tired of paying taxes for an empty lot and would like to do

something with his property.

“I’ve been paying taxes and it’s my right to build,” he said.

The building variance that Saroya had asked for from city council involved having five rather than four storeys. Thiswould raise the height from 14 metres to 17 metres.

City planner Scott Smith had previously stated that Saroya can build on the vacant Third Avenue lot regardless of whether or not council grants him the variance —the building would just have to be shorter.

“It’s a vacant lot in the middle of downtown... if more people live there, more people will shop their. But it needs to be cleaned up,” said Saroya.

Raw logs and funding for search and rescue and victims services are the issues being highlighted by Alberni politician’s at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention this week.

A UBCM resolution sponsored by the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District asks that “the provincial government reexamine the log export policy and the impact this policy has on the coastal forest industry.”

According to the ACRD, coastal log exports have increased in volume by 65 per cent from 2010 levels. In 2013, log exports totalled 6,348,674 cubic metres. The coastal regions, the ACRD stated, represent 90.6 percent of total log export volume in B.C.

In comments on the resolution, the UBCM resolution committee noted that the province had indicated in 2012 that it was engaged in a review of log export policy and would “take measures as necessary to ensure that domestic mills continue to have access to wood advertised for exports prior to exports being approved.”

The establishment of a provincial fund to support search and rescue is also on the ACRD’s radar for the UBCM.

Citing a 2012 coroner’s inquest jury recommendation that Emergency Management BC review and evaluate funding models to better support search and rescue operation and the resulting 2013 BC Search and Rescue Association’s recommendation of such a funding model, the ACRD is asking the province to implement

that proposal.The UBCM

resolution committee commented that the provincial government had stated in 2013 that gaming grant funding was adequate for search and rescue’s needs and that it was unaware of any gaps.

The issue of how to fund police-based victim service programs will be up for resolution at the UBCM.

According to the ACRD, the province’s position of not fully funding police-based programs and instead relying on municipalities to cost share as part of

their policing budget does not allow for the programs to receive the money they require.

The ACRD is asking the province to fully fund police-based victim service programs because “the property taxation system does not provide an equitable method of funding victim services” and local governments lack a funding formula to allocate those funds in a responsive, coordinated manner.

Election day might not be until Monday, Oct. 19 but it’s already time for voters to get their own affairs in order—namely, to make sure you can vote in the 42nd federal election.

First and foremost it’s important to make sure you’re registered, according to Elections Canada spokesperson Dorothy Sitek.

“You must be registered to vote,” Sitek said.

“There are a variety of ways that you might be registered already.”

If you filed your income taxes this year, there was an opt-in box to be added to the national list of electors, Sitek said.

“There are a number of ways Elections Canada tried to keep abreast of your current information,” she added.

If you’re not sure however, the Elections Canada website has a tool to make sure you are.

“For the first time on www.elections.ca there is a tool where you can input all of your information and you can check whether you’re registered and if you’re registered under your current address and correct information,” Sitek said. If the information there is incorrect, you can change it on the site.

If you’d rather not update your information online, you can go to your local elections office.

“Voters should be looking out for their voter information cards in the mail,” said Sitek.

“So it’s a really great time to make sure your information is correct.”

You can do so by visiting your elections office. The one in Port Alberni is on 4805 Mar St. at Fifth Avenue uptown and can be reached by phone at

1-866-499-8028.It’s important to

make sure that the information on the voter information card matches the I.D. you use to vote, said Sitek.

The voter information cards contain a variety of essential information, said Sitek, including information on where and when to vote.

“On election day, Oct. 19, you’re assigned a specific polling location.”

Unlike in provincial elections, you cannot go to any polling station on election day or during advance voting days—you may only go to the station that you have been assigned to.

Your polling station location will likely be different for election day than it is for advanced voting, Sitek added.

“Advanced polling for this federal election is over Thanksgiving weekend (Friday, Oct. 9 to Monday, Oct. 12),” said Sitek.

That’s an extra day compared to the last election, said Sitek.

Whether you vote early or on Oct. 19, you must make sure you have the correct identification. Three options exist: you can bring a piece of government I.D. with your name, photo

and current address; this includes a driver’s licence or a provincial services card.

If you don’t have one of those, you need two pieces; one with your name and another with both your name and address.

To prove your name, the I.D. can be anything from your passport to social insurance number card to a library card. To prove your current address, you can bring a credit card or utility bill, a personal cheque with your address on it or a variety of other options.

If you have nothing with a current address on it, you must bring two pieces of I.D. with your name on both of them as well as someone who knows you and lives in your polling area. That individual may

then vouch for your address.

For those without a fixed address, another option exists.

“There is a form called a ‘letter of confirmation of residence,’” said Sitek.

It’s downloadable from the Elections Canada site and provides a way to register to vote for those living without a specific address (for example, in a group home) or the homeless.

“You can go to your facility administrator and you can request that they fill out and sign the form,” she said.

“If you’re homeless but you frequent a soup kitchen or a specific shelter you can request that administrator download and fill out the form for you.”

Regardless of how you prove your identity, a voter information card with your current address will make voting faster.

The debate over a new truck route around rather than through Port Alberni reared its head at city council again last week.

“There’s already been lots of complaints in the past about logging trucks going through the area,” said Coun. Chris Alemany, adding that he believes there’s been a recent increase in truck traffic through the area.

According to Alemany, that doesn’t make for a very inviting Uptown area.

“From a perspective of safety and trying to encourage people to go into Uptown... it would be really good

if we could at least encourage companies to take alternate routes when they’re going up to Ship Creek. There are other ways to do that.”

This is not the first time Alemany has expressed concern; he wrote a letter on the topic to the previous city council in 2012.

In the longer term, Alemany would like to see city staff come up with an official alternate truck route, though he doesn’t have one in mind yet.

“There should be some public input into it but I think there are a number of routes.”

For the nine-hole low handicap group Jani Denis won low gross as well as the lowest putts, Kelly Gauthier won low net.

In the 18-hole ladies division low gross was won by Janice Cross with an 86, low net went to Marie Randall. Randall also won her challenge pin match with Leona Fowler. Barb Sheare won the KP on No. 4 and Cross won on No. 15. Kathy White won the special

prize. Next Tuesday

will be our last day for organized play.

‘Ryder Cup’ wraps up

The first ever version of the Alberni Golf Club Ryder Cup is in the books.

Thirty-four men played, and although we had some short rain showers, we had a good day before the real rain hit. The pro shop team trounced the grounds crew team: six wins, one tie and one loss. Closest to the pins were done by age groups: 65 plus No. 2 Wolf Suhr, No. 4 Loyd Fairley, No.13 Preben Rasmussen.

Under 65 No. 2 Ted Stewart, No. 4 Mike Savard, No. 13 James Weening. Nobody in either group was able to hit No. 17 into a strong south wind.

Ted Stewart won $34 in the charity closest to the pin on No. 7. Next Sunday is the Mac 5, So our next men’s day is Oct. 4. Not sure what we will do, probably an open day and perhaps play a skins game?

Sunday, Sept. 27 is the rain-postponed Mac Five Challenge, this event is the most popular one of the season, sponsored by Bruce and Kathy

MacDonald. There will be two-man teams. The format is as follows: holes 1 through 6 is alternate shot, chapman style. You both tee off, from there you hit each other’s second shot and keep alternating until you hole out.

On the par-3’s you both tee off then chose one and alternate until you hole out.

Holes 7 through 12, each player plays their own ball and record the best net on each hole.

The final six holes will be a scramble. Minimum of two

drives each (gross score).

One-third of the team’s combined handicap will be subtracted from the team score.

Get yourself a partner for what promises to be a fun day. All players must have an official handicap.

The shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. sharp, please be there at least 15 minutes before tee off time. Don’t forget leave yourself enough time to go into the clubhouse and pay your $10 entry fee before you head out.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of James Winstone on Saturday, September 5, 2015, due to complications following heart sur-gery at the age of 65. When he left , Jim was surrounded by love, with his wife and daughters at his side.

He is predeceased by his parents Jim and Elma. Jim is survived by his loving wife Margaret, his daughters Teresa, Kristy (Corey) Bramall; grandchildren Ashley, Dale, Teagan and Molly; sister Mary (Ron) Young; nieces and nephews Lisa, Reese, Sam, Myana and Hayley.

In his younger years, Jim worked as a sign painter. How-ever, he dedicated the majority of his professional years to the APD Sawmill, and was there until his retirement in 2010. He was an active man who will always be known as a “gentle giant”. Jim loved being in the outdoors, was in-credibly artistic, could fi x anything and enjoyed his farm, but above and beyond, loved his family.

Emily MooreThe family of Emily Moore

are sorry to announce her passing on Monday Sept. 14, 2015 at 94 years of age. She was predeceased by her hus-band, Herbert “Chub” Moore, and son, Peter.

She is survived by sons Tom (Marjorie) and Bill (Elaine, deceased). She was also predeceased by her only brother Peter and sisters Margaret, Evelyn, and Lena. She is survived by four sisters, Marion, Ollie, Louise and Hazel. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tom (Jennifer), Tracey (Brian), Jeff (Dorota) and Dene, and daughter-in-law Reyna. She leaves 13 great grandchildren and one great grandson.

Mom was born in Angusville, Manitoba and moved to Vancouver Island with her husband in 1941 where she remained. She taught school for 24 years, beginning in the original Koksilah school in Duncan, then on to Alexander school also in Duncan, and finally at Georgia Avenue school in Nanaimo. Emily and Chub were very active in minor baseball in Duncan, making many lifelong friends along the way. She enjoyed her retirement in Port Alberni and said she would always be happy as long as she could see Mt. Arrowsmith every day. We will miss her very much.

It is with sadness we mourn the sudden passing of our brother, Dan. He was predeceased by our father, Dr. Thomas P. McNiff in 1961 and our mother, Louise M. McNiff in 1990.

Survived by his nine brothers & sisters: Kathi Dolan (Bob) Port Alberni, BC, Laurie, San Jose, CA Tim (Delores) Boulder Creek, CA, Robbie (Kathy) Turlock, CA, Cecelia Casey (Bill), Kona HI, Brian, San Jose, CA, Marty (Lucia) Jupiter, FL, Sean, San Jose, CA, Joe (Karen) Littleton, CO, and numerous nieces & nephews.

Dan was born in Santa Clara, California and fi rst came to Canada as a child where our parents owned a summer cabin at Sproat Lake. Danny loved the lake and as an adult he chose to move to Canada. He lived at the cabin for many years. Dan's quick wit and sense of humor drew people to him. He will be missed by his family, his many friends on both sides of the border, and especially his loyal companion, Woofer.

A young artist who grew up in Port Alberni is making waves at the Blue Fish Gallery throughout the month of September.

Brianna Harvey is “young and talented and works in a variety of mediums,” gallery owner Cheryl Iwanowsky said.

Harvey started taking a serious interest in art when she was 11 years old.

Inspired by the beautiful scenery and wildlife of Vancouver Island, she started with pencil and paper and developed her own sketching style.

Her love of natural surroundings is still evident in the work that she does: sweeping seascapes and more intimate treescapes are drawn out of her memory, spilling onto canvas in a variety of styles.

Harvey works in pencil, charcoal,

ink, watercolour and acrylic. She credits “amazing art teachers” in middle and high school who encouraged her to leave her comfort zone with art and try new things. She continues to do so: some of the artwork featured at the Blue Fish Gallery includes watercolour on canvas, where vibrant colours have deliberately dripped onto the frame, creating a three-dimensional look to some of her unframed work.

Another Port Alberni artist, Walter Collins, introduced Harvey

to the medium of lampblack, a black pigment similar to charcoal. Few artists on Vancouver Island use this medium, she explained.

Harvey’s work can also be seen at the Blue Marlin Inn—formerly the Arlington Inn—where she painted a mural during renovations of the century-old hotel. She has also done other commissioned art pieces.

Harvey currently lives in Nanaimo attending Vancouver Island University. Her love of art and passion for working with children with special needs has led her to the decision to become an art therapist.

This group exhibit showcases a variety of images, as individual as each of the photographers in this group.

It’s pumpkin carving time

It’s time to get your ideas ready for the Rollin Art Centre’s second annual Pumpkin Carving Contest, taking place Saturday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside in the centre’s garden.
