PASTOR’S CORNER

The Presence of God

I can’t believe we’re already celebrating New Year’s. Time keeps moving. “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day...” as Macbeth says, and it keeps on creeping. And none of us knows when time will run out for us. Many people make resolutions today because they recognize there are some things they would like to do differently (like spend less money, stop smoking, lose weight, exercise more, etc.) and they know they don’t have forever to get around to doing it. If you’re making any resolutions, why not think about praying a little more?

Whenever I pray, I am tempted to think I’m giving some of my precious time to God. Then God reminds me every moment I am alive, he is giving to me. When I pray, I am only giving back to God what is already his. Prayer helps keep me sane and helps me keep things in perspective. Wouldn’t 5 minutes of prayer each day be more benefit to us than 5 minutes of TV? We have the example of Mary in today’s Gospel. “Mary kept all these things and reflected on them in her heart.” She who was already so close to God needed time to reflect on the presence of God in her life.... Is this need any less for any of us?

(Excerpt taken from Guiding Light - Forcusing on the Word)

“The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved,

forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel.” - Pope Francis

The POP School robotics team recently added three trophies to their collection from the Shelton State BEST Robotics Competition. The team took second place in the engineering notebook category; third place for t-shirt design; and third place in the “BEST Award” category. Congratulations!!

By placing third in the BEST category, the POP team advanced to the five-state regional competition at Auburn University. POP ranked highest of all competing middle schools and outperformed eleven high schools. The team was also invited to be part of the Shelton’s BEST Engineering Day event in the spring. POP’s robotics team has been competing in the BEST Robotics program for the past seven years.

Religious EducationThe Happiest People I Know

The happiest people I know are also the most generous people I know. Is that a coincidence? I don’t think so. The world propses selfishness as the path to happiness. God proposes generosity as the path to happiness. I know many selfish people, but I don’t know any who have a deep and lasting happiness. Selfish people always seem restless and discontented. The happiness we experience through selfishness is fleeting because it is dependent on external circumstances. But I also know some very generous people, and their happiness is not dependent on things going their way or on getting what they want; their happiness is rooted in the life of God. This happiness, this joy springs up from something that is taking place within them. We are all invited to that life and that happiness, and generosity is the path that leads there.

Sometimes I wonder, what is God really like? We spend a lot of time talking about God and Church, religion and spirituality, but sometimes all this talk can get in the way of us really thinking about God. Have you ever wondered what God is really like? How would you describe Him? Finish this sentence: God is.... “God is love” is how John’s Gospel finishes the sentence (John 4:8). What words would you use to describe God?

One word I would use is generous. In everything we attribute to God, I see immense acts of generosity. Creation is generous. Free will is generous. Life is generous. Love is generous. The generosity of God is awesome.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!Classes resume January 8 for all grades.

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s CallSeveral parishioners work all throughout the year to ‘build the Kingdom of God.’ They engage in numerous fundraising events to raise money to benefit members of our parish, such as funding college scholarship opportunities for our teens and providing help with our special education religious education program. They work tirelessly in concession stands, prepare and grill meat

for countless hours, sell Advent artifacts, just to name a few examples. They serve as a fine example of living out the stewardship way of life in Service and Hospitality.

Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.

Centering PrayerSave the date for January 21 as Sr. Mary McGehee will present an Introductory Workshop on Centering Prayer at Prince of Peace. More details to come.

Centering Prayer is a way to deepen your prayer life by learning to “rest in God.” It helps you find Christ’s presence within the “stillness of our being” leading us beyond concepts, words and images. Centering Prayer is a simple and disciplined waiting, lovingly on God.

To learn Centering Prayer, please be prepared to attend for six weeks. There will be an Introductory Workshop (lead by Sr. McGehee), which is usually given in a one-day or weekend retreat, then weekly sessions for six weeks.

The Introductory Workshop learns this method of prayer by lectures, discussion, and practice. The day has a beautiful atmosphere of silent listening from the heart. The following sessions include praying Centering Prayer as a group, reading from the book, Open Mind Open Heart, or watching a short video of Fr. Thomas Keating and having discussions. The weekly sessions usually last 1.5 - 2 hours each.

We hope you can join us for this introspective prayer journey on January 21.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-4)Let Us Give Thanks - About Nuclear Weapons

On October 27 of this year, the United Nations adopted a landmark resolution to launch negotiations in 2017 on a treaty outlawing nuclear weapons; 123 nations voted for the resolution, with 38 voting against it and 16 abstaining. The countires that actually have nuclear weapons were of course among those against the resolution. But even if the nuclear nations scoff, a treaty would help stigmatize the weapons.
