  • Emergency Management – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has selected Emergency Manager Tiffany Brown to participate in the Center for Homeland Defense and Security master’s degree program’s fall cohort 2015 at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Acceptance into the program is a highly-competitive national process, from which 60 applicants are selected each year. The M.A. program is offered at no cost to eligible local, tribal, state and federal officials. All students admitted to the 18-month program already hold positions with significant Homeland Security-related responsibilities. The curriculum is structured around the key policy and organizational design problems that future homeland security leaders are likely to confront, and the analytic skills they will need to meet those challenges. Brown will be part of the 68th and 69th classes to be admitted since the program began in 2003. Emergency Management finalized a countywide CERT logo. The logo features representations of Young’s Bay Bridge, Tillamook Head and the county’s vast water features. RARE Participant Nick Sund drafted the original design, staff and local CERT leaders provided input, then the department worked with a graphics professional to create custom images for each of the 7 teams and 3 high schools. Recent Teen CERT graduates will soon receive a shirt bearing the logo with their high school name, and Cannon Beach is creating a banner to spotlight CERT in their 4th of July parade. ‘Race the Wave’ (RTW) is back for a second year in Cannon Beach on Sunday, September 13. RTW is a tsunami awareness and preparedness initiative to include a preparedness fair with games and prizes. Participants may choose between a 5K and 10K this year, and NW Natural Gas has partnered to provide lunch after the event. Register today at active.com! Public Health – Public Health staff took part in courses offered by the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium called Isolation and Quarantine for Rural Communities, and Rural Isolation and Quarantine for Public Health Officials and Health Care Professionals. The first course was based on legal underpinnings of public health law; the second course was a practical tabletop exercise addressing the needs of people who might be facing Isolation and Quarantine measures. Clatsop County shared with all participants (representatives from two states and multiple jurisdictions) the Isolation and Quarantine (I&Q) Manual that was developed by the Oregon Department of Justice and the Oregon Public Health Division as an aid to help with planning and implementation, if such measures were ever needed to protect the public’s health. I&Q balances the individual’s rights and needs with the public’s need for health protection. Public Works – The Westport Ferry Project is going strong with lots of activities continuing to finish the permanent landing; the goal is to finish up late next week with the hopes of moving traffic over after the Fourth of July weekend more or less. The Clatsop County Transportation System Plan will be moving into the adoption phase in the coming weeks starting with a public hearing before the Planning Commission in August. The Road Division will begin the surface pavement preservation program or chip sealing program the week after the Fourth of July.
