Activation The Anschluss

• In 1938, Adolf Hitler joined together with Austria. Hitler has been encouraged by his victory in the Rhineland. It was Hitler's desire to see Germany and Austria united. During 1938, Nazi’s in Austria were encouraged to stir up trouble. Hitler pressurised the Austrian Chancellor to ask for assistance. Hitler sent troops into Austria to guarantee a trouble free “plebiscite” (referendum) , defying the Versailles Treaty of 1919. 99.75% voted for “Anschluss” and Germany stayed.

• Britain and France did nothing. Many believed that Germany and Austria belonged together. Hitler had been risky, but it had paid off. He had broken another part of the Treaty, and Britain and France had shown they were not willing to protect it.
