What is the main question?
■ How to plan and conduct integration of system elements into a
complete system in an efficient way?
■ Lean methods are widely applied in manufacturing environments.
■ Why don’t we implement the methodology in other environments !?

■ Use Value stream mapping!!
■ A lean-management method for analyzing the current state and
designing a future state for the series of events that take a product or
service from its beginning through to the customer.

Difficulties of value streaming in PD
■ Map virtual data flow not physical flow
■ Thinks of days and weeks not seconds.
■ Knowledge work instead of physical manufacturing works.
■ Nonlinear and multidirectional flows.
■ There is no such a unique place for info unlike production.

What is SMED?
■ One of the lean production methods for reducing waste.
(Waste: Non value adding activity which customer does not pay for it!)
■ Goal: Increase flexibility and reduce production time by using
Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED).

Internal VS External activities
■ Internal activities:
■ Those that can only be performed when the process is ongoing.
■ External activities:
■ All the other activities that can be performed in parallel or in advance.

Example:
Application of SMED during System Validation (testing)
■ 1- List all the activities.
■ 2- Remove any potential waste.
■ 3- Separate Internal and External activities.
■ 4- Plan to perform all the External activitiesIn advance or in parallel
with previous test Internal activities.
■ 5- Plan resorces.
■ 6- Make a detail Task List for people on site.
■ 7- Communicate everything with the whole team!

Conclusion
■ What the customer wants, what the engineer wants.
■ Getting your hands dirty by working in specific area, then step back
and become philosopher.
■ Translate the concepts into the other environments.
■ Step back from a lot of lean tools and ask what the underlying
principles are?
■ Lean Philosophy and system thinking, not bunch of how-to and tips!
