TO PAY OR NOT TO PAY? A BINARY QUESTION WITH NON-BINARY ANSWERS

• Apps should be free to attract users

• Services around the app should not be free

• Payment may also be non-monetary

Page 17: Apps for Flanders - Business model brainstorm

CUSTOMERS WHO THEY ARE AND HOW TO ATTRACT THEM

• Differentiate for different customer segments

• Make an MVP to discover who the customers are

• Apps should focus on a niche market

• The customer should be having ‘the’ problem your App is solving

• Some of the best Apps are written for yourself as a customer

• Think about both B2C and B2B

• Customer focus 1: think about your customer. You are developping the App for him.

• Customer focus 2: easy to use (the customer should understand the App)

• Sell the App on the App store

• Licensing

• White labeling the App for companies

• No cure no pay for the accompanying services

• Freemium

• Website is free, you have to pay for the App

• Transaction fees

• Sell your company to one of the BIG 5.

REVENUE MODELS II HOW CAN I MAKE EVEN MORE MONEY WITH MY APP?

• Users buy a share in the App. If it works, users get a financial return.

• Pay with a tweet or with a like

• Customisation of the App (with open API)

• Loyaly models like air miles and …

• Pay what you want + extra features for people paying more than average

PARTNERS YOUR APP IS PART OF AN ECOSYSTEM

• Providers of the open data

• BIG 5

• Local 5: App as marketing for their local services

• Government

• Press

• The customer should be a partner too

• Cross Sector Combinations

Page 21: Apps for Flanders - Business model brainstorm

ONLINE & OFFLINE OR WAS IT DIGITAL VERSUS PHYSICAL?

• App should also work offline

• Offline marketing for online Apps (in a 360 degree marketing approach)

• Foursquare = real life incentives for using the App

• NFC, tags, … integrate the online experience in the offline world

OTHER IDEAS ALL THINGS WE COULD NOT DISCUSS IN DETAIL…

• Gamification

• Sustainability

• Put technology where it needs to be (not technology push, but problem driven)

• App to kill apps you don’t need

• Evolving App that learns what the user needs

• Your App might be worthless. But DON’T GIVE UP!

• 3 types of users of Google

• Internet of Things

• Motion technology
