Dr. Bailey Ke l l y Ashford was born on September 18, 1873, in the city of Wa sh i ngt on . In 1896 he gr a du a t e d from the GeorBetovrn Medical School. As an assistant brigadier surgeon of the Army, he came to Puerto Rico in 1898. On November 24, 1899 he announced that he had found "the cause of many perni­c ious, progressive anemias of the Island to be due to ~nkyl?~,

tomum duodenale. 1I Later named, for they were a new species , Necator americanus sy Dr. Stiles. Soon after this discovery Dr. Ashford '-was i n s t r u c t e d by the chief surgeon to aid the Superior Board of Health in preparing a p amph l e t on anemia , its causes, treatment and prevention, which appeared in 1900. Following this pUblicat ion, others have appeared on the subject of uncinar iasis, many vmich are today regarded as the most com­plete and accurate exposi tions of the hookwor-m p r-obLern extant.

In 1904 the 30ve r nme n t of Puerto Rico provided funds for the organi zation of t he Porto Rico Anemia Conwission, made up of the early as s o c iates of' Dr. Aehf'or-d , namely, Dr. Pedro Gutierx'ez Igaravtdez, Dr. \"Ial ter ICing and Dr. Isaac Goriz aLe z Nar t 1. ne z .

S ince September 5, 1906, Dr. Ashford worked for the for­mation of the School o')f 'I'r-op l c a'L He d i ci ne in Puerto Rico, saw it completed in Hay , 1926 and Has p r of e s s or of trop teal medi­cine and mycology in this institution. He continued his in­vestigations until the acute stage of his illness and at the same time devoted h ims e l f to the neees of' a very large number of patients.

Dr. Ashford di d no t only work in Puerto Rico. In 1908 he went to Mississippi, in 19 1 6 vi s ited Br a z i l , in June 1917 du­ring the Eu r op e an War , enlisted and wen t to France. He received many medals, c Ltat tons and distintions from Puerto Rico, t h e United states and ma ny o t her countries.
