Means « lack of order, coordination »

• Loss of balance with unsteady, irregular,

wide-based gait with swaying and risk of

falls

• Limb movements are irregular, fragmented,

tremulous.

• Eye movements are interrupted, not

calibrated, fixation maybe unstable with or

without double vision

• Speech is slurred, in speed and volume

• Tremor in the hands or legs

Inherited ataxias

–Hereditary ataxias may be

congenital, episodic, or progressive

–Inheritance may be autosomal

dominant, autosomal recessive, X-

linked and mitochondrial

–Vascular, Inflammatory (eg: multiple

sclerosis)

–Traumatic Metabolic, Developmental,

–Toxic / drug-related (eg: alcohol)

–Neoplastic / paraneoplastic Epilepsy
