ance Photography” seems an oxymoron: capturing movement in a stationary, two-dimensional medium is problematic,

to say the least — a challenge Atlanta dance photographer Scott Nilsson finds particularly exciting. Carolyn Guild, internationally-awarded fine art photographer: “Scott’s images are simply magnificent. And that word does not do them justice... taken with full control of the equipment and felt from the soul... Scott’s eye for the moment is only a portion of the story.”

As a former dancer, Scott has the knowledge and timing to catch the apex of jumps and dancers’ moments of perfection. As a former lighting designer, he controls his studio lights — scampering to arrange ‘snoots,’ ‘grids’ and ‘barn doors’ to highlight — or shadow — specific areas. Scott coaches the dancers to their most dramatic lines as high-powered fans billow their hair and costumes; his assistants wait to throw the dancers’ skirts and capes until the moment he cues — and then he triggers the shutter.

“I seek the moment of maximum commitment — the greatest allongée,

épaulement, ballon, and complete emotional engagement. The greatest excitement is the moment before ‘too much’ —

before... collapse!”Though thoughtfully directed, Scott’s

images have an impetuous “dance like no one is watching” feel — and professional choreographers, directors and dancers seek out his dynamic work. In the past year, he was invited to shoot in Houston, South Carolina and Mississippi, and photographed artists from out-of-town companies, universities and Cirque du Soleil. Locally he photographed the professional dancers of Georgia Ballet and Ballethnic, and numerous excellent, pre-professional companies. Scott also loves collaborating with Atlanta mission-based organizations and dancers from Full Radius, Praise in Motion and Advocate Arts — whose dancers raise awareness of human potential, cancer research, human trafficking and world hunger.

Scott’s images of dancers in momentary flight have been featured in studios, and on posters, billboards, building facades and marquees. New York City Ballet representative, Jerri Kumery, commented that the dance world is “...so blessed for people like Scott that can capture the fleeting beauty” of dance.

GeorGia Ballet’s alexandre Proia is not interested in HoldinG Back

April of 2014 marks the first anniversary of Alexandre Proia’s mission as the new Artistic Director of The Georgia Ballet. He

has an illustrious background, graduating from the Paris Opera and dancing with New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet and the Martha Graham Company among many other credits. Now he faces a challenge by recreating a 54 year old Atlanta dance institution.

His temperament and energy are evident as he describes his goals. “You can’t cut marble by blowing on it,” he says. “You have to use a hatchet.” With bountiful enthusiasm, Proia is pursuing his goals with an enervated company and reorganized school.

The April 4-6 production of his “The Four Seasons,” performed at the Marietta Performing Arts Center, will be a taste of “where he’s going.” The music by Max Richter is a revision of the popular Vivaldi score, and the subject is somewhat personal. “This April I will have been here four full seasons,” he says. The ballet is set at a dinner party, and involves personal relationships and emotions.

“I am stretching and challenging my dancers,” Proia states. “I want this company to ‘speak.’” Based in classical ballet, Proia is infusing

more “genres, techniques and imagination” into his dancers. “We want to invite our audiences into an atmosphere,” he says. “We do not want to dance just to dance.”

Involving other community arts groups and performers to be a part of productions is another idea. “The arts need to work together a little bit more,” he says.

Yet the basic foundation is the school, as the source of future dancers, and here Proia has also made his mark. Fiona Fairrie now heads this branch of Georgia Ballet, and her background is also illustrious. She graduated from the Royal Ballet, danced with the Stuttgart Ballet, and has taught at such places as American Ballet Theatre and Houston Ballet.

The school is establishing workshops, and the success of a Summer Intensive June 2-28 is one of Proia’s most passionate goals. The Intensive will feature such guest teachers as Sabirjan Yap-parov, Hilary Cartwright and Ivonne Lemus.

“The Georgia Ballet is a jewel for Cobb County,” Proia says. “The county should be proud to have this company along with the Braves. We have to be ‘brave’ and keep the momentum and courage to continue growing.”

As an introduction to the future of tap, Hines showcases the talents of tap-dancing brothers John and Leo Manzari. The Menzari Brothers performed with Hines in the show’s recent run at Arena Stage and previously in the 2010 production of Sophisticated Ladies, when he discovered them at ages 17 & 15. Hines also traveled to Atlanta earlier this year to cast

one young local tap dancer to join him and the Manzari Brothers in the Alliance’s production.

“This show has evolved into not only a celebration of my brother and what a fabulous tap dancer he was, but it’s also a celebration of my mother and father, especially my mother. This play is really a love letter to her as the driving force in keeping all of us on the right track in our careers and teaching us to go through life with class,” said Hines. “This show also gives me the opportunity to thank the fantastically effortless performers who influenced me, from Judy Garland to Lena Horne to Frank Sinatra.”

If Atlanta Ballet’s February premiere of choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot’s

Romeo et Juliette is any indication of what audiences can expect for the rest of the Company’s 13-14 season, a stunning second half is in store.

The Company will build on its momentum with March’s mixed-repertory Modern Choreographic Voices (MCV), an evolution of the New Choreographic Voices (NCV) program, which promises a look at the bold, new directions in the world of contemporary dance with works by some of the industry’s most sought-after choreographers.

One in particular is choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, who’ll offer his “remarkable” and “spellbinding” Seven Sonatas. Ratmansky currently serves as artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in New York and has been regarded as the “most looked-to choreographer in Western ballet” by The New York Times. Sonatas — a classical piece for six dancers set to seven “Keyboard Sonatas” by composer Domenico Scarlatti — has received stellar reviews since ABT premiered the work in 2009. Atlanta Ballet has the distinction of being the first outside of ABT to perform it —

a

major tribute to the skill, artistry and growing national reputation of the Company.

Joining Ratmansky’s work on the ticket is a premiere by Atlanta Ballet dancer and breakout choreographer Tara Lee. The Atlanta debut of Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin’s Secus will round out the March program. Secus is the Company’s second work in a three-year partnership with Naharin that began with last season’s Minus 16.

Following Modern Choreographic Voices, Atlanta Ballet will stage a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, created by Austin Ballet’s artistic director Stephen Mills. The haunting tale of intrigue, revenge and power is back in Atlanta after the southeastern premiere 11 years ago. Mills’ Hamlet blends traditional ballet with contemporary staging — imagine Armani suits and velvet dresses with a striking metal panel backdrop — to create a startlingly original story ballet that has mesmerized audiences and critics around the world. In a 2003 review, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution described it as “Stark. Modern. Unforgiving. Relentless.”

PILOBOLUS AT THE FERST CENTERDiverse, ChAllenging AnD fun

Dance company Pilobolus — named after a barnyard fungus that propels its spores

with extraordinary speed, accuracy and strength — has performed in the Ferst Center Presents series 11 times — more than any other group or individual since the Center opened in 1992. The reason for this popularity: physically and intellectually, the compa-ny engages and inspires its Atlanta audience, just as it does audiences around the world through performance, education and consultation.

Founded by a group of Dartmouth College students in 1971, the company is now led by Artis-tic Directors Robby Barnett and Michael Tracy, two of the original seven founders. Pilobolus continu-ally forms diverse collaborations that break down barriers between disciplines and challenge the way we think about dance. The original company, Pilobolus Dance Theater, has been touring its 115 pieces of repertory to more than 64 countries over the last 42 years. Shadowland, the company’s evening-length show currently touring Europe, the Middle East and Asia, has been seen by more than a half-million people in the three years since it was created.

Pilobolus’ collaborative creative and educational work takes place through the Pilobolus Lab, in which the company both convenes diverse artists in the development of new work and teaches its creative method to individu-als and institutions. To date, the Pilo-bolus Lab has produced collaborations with Penn & Teller, the MIT Distributed Robotics Laboratory, Art Spiegelman,

Maurice Sendak, OK Go, Radiolab and many oth-ers. The Lab’s educational programming, which applies Pilobolus’ unique collaborative process to help all kinds of groups work better and achieve common goals, includes workshops, master classes, residencies and children’s programming.

Featured performances include the 2007 Academy Awards, Sesame Street, Oprah and 60 Minutes. Pilobolus holds the 2011 Guinness World Record for fitting the most people in a Mini Coo-per (26). Recently they were honored as the first collective to receive the Dance Magazine Award, which recognizes artists who have made lasting contributions to the field. lume Foundation illuminates the lives of others through dance. This Atlanta-based nonprofit organization volunteers

performances, dance classes, personal visits, and gifts to individuals at various healthcare facilities. Founder and Executive Director Mara Mandradjieff explains the inspiration behind her work, “I had been dancing professionally for a few years, but had this desire to do something more. I began volunteering for a DanceAbility class, where I taught ballet to special needs children. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience and exposed the real joy that dance can create. I wanted to find more avenues where dance could promote this type of positivity. That’s when I organized a volunteer performance for Children’s and later turned the concept into an official nonprofit, Lume.”

Over the past year, Lume has worked with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Egleston and Scottish Rite, to inspire and comfort children and their families during challenging times. Lume hires professional dancers from different genres to perform and socialize with the mixed audience of

children, parents, volunteers, and workers. These dancers also pass out small gifts to the children such as tutus, fairy wings, animal ears, masks, and stickers. Mandradjieff says, “That’s the best part really. You look out in the audience, which is actually the lobby of a hospital, and all of the children are wearing tutus and animal masks. It makes everybody smile, and that’s the goal.”

Lume Foundation strives to generate a welcoming environment within a stressful setting. Mandradjieff notes, “We aim to engage the audience — to create an event and space that allows these individuals to feel at ease, to feel happy.” Yet, it is not only the audience members that leave with a lasting impression; the dancers as well are sincerely moved by the experience. Mandradjieff states, “There are so many talented dancers looking for outreach projects. These artists want to give back to the community, and Lume is here to facilitate that opportunity.”

Richard Calmes of Atlanta, GA, is being given a nationwide audience. The National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, New York, has selected Dance Magic: the Photography of Richard Calmes to be their featured photographic exhibition on view from April 2014 to April, 2015. The exhibition was selected under the Museum’s Art in the Foyer program which annually welcomes dance-inspired fine art. Dance Magic, the Exhibition will include 25 of Calmes’ beautiful dance images.

“It is very exciting to be selected for this exhibition,” says Calmes. “Many wonderful photographers have been exhibited in this program, and I am honored to be in their company.” Previous photographers chosen have been Lois Greenfield, Paul Kolnick and Jordan Matter.

Calmes is an internationally known dance photographer. He has published two books of dance photography, Dance Magic and Water Dance, has had 20 national and international magazine covers, and enjoyed exhibitions in Great Britain and the United States. Calmes’ work strives to capture, reveal, and celebrate

the individual dancers’ beauty,

passion and personal expression of the art form.

More than international acclaim, Calmes finds reaching out to the local dance community an important part of

his work. “There are wonderful dancers right here in our own back yard,” he

says. “You don’t always need to travel to find great subjects and great beauty.” He has

donated his talents to many area companies, most notably Dance Canvas, Gwinnett Ballet Theatre, Georgia Ballet, Appalachian Ballet, and Roswell Dance Theatre.

The National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame was established in 1986 as the only museum in the nation, and one of the few in the world, that is dedicated entirely to the art of dance. The Museum’s archives house a growing collection of photographs, videos, costumes, documents, biographies and artifacts that honor all forms of dance throughout history.

A reception for the exhibition will be held at the NDM on May 30, 2014. This event is free and open to the public. When the Ferst Center contacted Keiko Guest to invite her to a two month showing of her work, little did they

know they would be getting the culmination of nearly 5 years of work in progress.

In her 4th decade as a dance photographer, Keiko Guest will be showcasing her second major gallery exhibit: The BRONZE Collection.

It is a stunning body of images captured of dancers whose bodies are bronzed with a look of weathered patina on cold metal. A closer look reveals not only life, emotion and expression through their skillful body language, but undeniable movement in their stillness.

The exhibit runs from the first week of March through the end of April.

On April 4th 2014, please join Keiko at her opening gala to celebrate these amazing athletes.

A little about the artist:At 64, Keiko is the reigning Ms. Georgia

Senior America, whose performance in Atlantic City NJ has garnered her invitations to perform her aerial dance for the 2014 Ms. Oklahoma Senior America and the opening ceremonies for the National Senior Games in 2015.

She is currently a member of the Atlanta Silver Classix Crew....an over 50 hip hop dance team, performing for the Atlanta Hawks and the GA TECH basketball games.

During her 40 years of dance Keiko has danced more recently with Lee Harper and Dancers performing for the Atlanta Opera and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Her mentor is the legendary Ruth Mitchell with whom she danced for 16 years and prior to that she danced for the Louisville Ballet in her 20’s.

Through her teaching and photography, Keiko has watched many dancers turn into gorgeous professionals with New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Boston Ballet, Royal Birmingham Ballet and The Royal Danish Ballet, just to name a few.

Her photographs have been featured in Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Dance Teacher Now Creative Loafing, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution and countless other publications.

Currently, Keiko trains in aerial arts with the Dair Project and her passions include fashion, cooking, and riding.

I jokingly asked my Company Manager what I should write about in this article. “Talk about how cool it is here,” he replied. That

is a very easy thing to do! I’ve been working for the Atlanta Shakespeare Company for almost twenty years. From the first moment I walked into The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse, I never wanted to leave. I love it here. Naturally there are internal things I love: my co-workers, my incredibly trusting boss and the fact that I get to walk around in my socks at work. However, the audience gets to experience the parts I love best. First of all, I love the plays and the actors who work tirelessly and passionately to make Shakespeare (and the classics) accessible, real and fun. I enjoy our uniqueness. We are the only Shakespeare Company in America to have completed the entire Shakespeare Canon and are well on our way to doing it again. I love that once a week, someone can get a $20 ticket and sit on the front row (Thursdays). I am quite proud of the fact that we offer ticket discounts to not only students, but Educators and anyone in the Military. I like that there are Half Priced Pint Nights (Fridays). I love that you can enjoy a delicious dinner in the same spot that you watch the show, no rushing around to get from

a restaurant to the theater. Park once and you’re good to go. I love that several times a year you can come down to The Tavern and watch a High School student really own playing a major Shakespeare character in our Shakespeare Intensive for Teens Summer Program, or a seven year old play Henry V in our Shakespeare Superheroes Program. For me, watching kids get Shakespeare and have fun with it is the absolute best perk of my job. Mainly I love our audience. The people who come see what we do, and the people who volunteer for us, span all ages and backgrounds, but they all have an unabashed enthusiasm for what we do. We have a lot in common.

ance for me is more than an artistic form primarily for entertainment. It is foremost a meaningful tool of

communication. My goal to be a professional artist while giving to the community is a serious challenge.” These are the words of Terrie Ajile Axam. Ms. Axam a native Atlantan, is a professional dancer who began dancing at age four attending the Smith School of Dance, Spellman College and The Atlanta Ballet School. She continued her dance studies in New York, receiving an Alvin Ailey Scholarship, New Jersey, St. Louis under Katherine Dunham, and Kingston Jamaica at Edna Manley College where she also taught as a guest instructor.

Ms. Axam’s dance training also included her educational experience while attending Barnard College of Columbia University, Princeton University where she received her BA degree, Rutgers University earning a Master’s Degree and New York University in pursuit of her PhD in dance. Through a strong dance arts

educational process, the goal of her work is to present a strong technical and creative process to produce great dancers and leaders.

Ms. Axam’s performance background has included the Apollo Theater, Aresenio Hall Show, CNN special, HBO special, and more. Highlights include her performing for Nelson Mandela in South Africa and being named a fun, fearless female by Cosmopolitan Magazine.

Presently, Ms. Axam is an artist in residence at Adamsville Recreational Center where Dancical Productions, Inc., is housed. This non-profit dance production company provides a platform for artistic and college preparatory programming. They have produced outstanding graduates who have excelled in the dance world. This umbrella organization promotes professional artist sharing their skills in the community and includes, Oginga Love, Dawn Axam, Al Morrison, Kikora Franklin, and more.

One of the many accomplishments for Ms. Axam is the creation of the Mojah technique, a Modern African Dance form now being taught at Penn State University and its home base in Atlanta. As Founder and Artistic Director of Atlanta’s Total Dance/Dancical Productions, Inc., Ms. Axam has led the way in innovative programming since the 1980’s preserving African American culture through dance locally, nationally, and internationally.

Ballethnic Dance Company Presents Flyin’ West the Ballet

Set in the 1890s, Flyin’ West illuminates the lives of six newly freed slaves (four women and two men) as they give their personal accounts of life after transitioning from slavery to freedom. They settled in Nicodemus, Kansas, the very first town settled by African-Americans. In an effort to gain the keenest insight Choreographer Waverly Lucas traveled to Nicodemus and interviewed four generations of the original ancestors.

Thus, Ballethnic’s Flyin’ West features Lucas’ signature choreographic blend ranging from Ballet to African. It is a multimedia production, featuring the works of William Grant Still, “the Dean” of African American composers and live music.
