Greetings to the Populace!
August is a very busy month for us! While many of us are just getting home from Pennsic, others
are preparing for Flight of the Falcon (8/17) & our Baronial Birthday (at the end of the month).
There will be several Champion positions becoming available at Baronial Birthday, so keep your
eyes open!
At our Baronial Business Meeting, we'll be voting on the proposed policy changes (included in
this newsletter). Most of the changes are merely cosmetic, correcting spellings and grammar, but
there are a couple items that are substantial.
First, "The Baronial Coronet shall be defined as the territorial baron and/or baroness appointed by
the Crown of Atlantia" has been changed to "The Baronial Coronet shall be defined as the individ-
ual(s) appointed by the Crown of Atlantia." This keeps us up to date with Kingdom Law.
Second, our officer structure has been simplified to, again, bring us in line with what Kingdom
does. Specifically, the Archery & Rapier Marshals will be Deputies to the Marshal office rather
than officer positions. This will have a side effect of making these offices much easier to fill by
eliminating the additional requirements of being a Baronial Officer (meeting attendance, monthly
reports, etcetera).
The last thing I'd like to mention is War of the Wings VIII. Our biggest event of the year is rapid-
ly approaching, with less than two months to go! I hope to see you all there and wearing your best
green for Processional!
Yours, in Service and Art,
Seigneur Etienne Le Mons d'Anjou

at 2pm at the Star of Bethlehem Church in Winston
Salem (1355 Jonestown Road).
OFFICER REPORTS
From the desk of the Baronial Marshal:
I am happy to report that overall, Marshal activities are
taking place within the Barony and there are no negative
issues which need to be dealt with.
A Rapier practice is once again taking place within the
Barony and is focused on the novice fighter, though all
are welcome to attend. The first of these are scheduled
on Aug 11th and Aug 25th and will take place at Bunker
Hill High School, 4675 Oxford School Rd, Claremont,
NC 28610. The listed start time is 3:00 PM.
The Warriors Heart Challenge, a Baronial Heavy prac-
tice and tournament is also taking place within the Baro-
ny on a monthly basis. The first of these was held on Ju-
ly 14th and had 14 fighters in attendance. The next will
be taking place on August 11th in Salsibury, NC. Please
contact me at [email protected] for more details.
As a reminder to anyone attending an event (whether it
be a canton event or a baronial event) who may be hop-
ing to authorize, please be sure to contact the Marshal in
Charge of the event letting them know of your desire to
authorize so that arrangements can be made to insure
that a Marshal from outside of the area (meaning outside
of the Barony) is in attendance. Also be sure that you
notify them well in advance of the event.
From Atlantian Policy, Section 3.4.5 regarding Authori-
zations and Marshals:
3.4.5 Marshals
3.4.5.1 At least one of the marshals must live in a dif-
ferent local group from the candidate. If the candidate
lives in a barony, at least one of the marshals must live
outside that barony.
Warriors Heart Challenge – August Recap
Thanks again to everyone who came out and participated
in this challenge. As has been reported already there
were 14 fighters in armor who braved the humidity and
heat. The first installment of the Challenge Tournament
went fairly well. The current Challenge standings can be
found here:
http://goo.gl/iuztt4
The fighters also had some good discussion amongst
themselves, focusing on what they would like to see cov-
ered in the future. The melee portion of the day went
well with a number of skirmishes which finished with
the noble knights (Sir Marc, Sir Axel and Duke Alaric)
as well as Master Achbar facing off against everyone
else. More discussion was had and everyone then called
it a day.
For any fighters, marshals (or individuals interested in
attending these practices in order to learn about becom-
ing a fighter or marshal) there is a Facebook Group
which I have setup specifically for the Warriors Heart
Challenge. It will serve as the primary source of infor-
mation for upcoming challenges as well as a place for all
participants to give me feedback and suggestions of what
to cover at upcoming practices.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/
WarriorsHeartChallenge/
August, 11th is the next scheduled Warriors Heart Chal-
lenge. The start time is 1:00 PM (for slow drills and in-
struction). The address for the practice is: 132 Morlan
Park Rd Salisbury, NC.

Greetings from your new Baronial MoAS!
Pennsic has come and gone and many in the
Barony are flexing their artistic muscles. Be it
making new garb, making banners, or practicing
the skills they learned at Pennsic, the members
of the Barony are in artistic overdrive! Even
though War of the Wings is right around the cor-
ner, it can be easy to overlook the A&S competi-
tions and displays at the events this month.
There are 3 competitions this year for Flight of
the Falcon; An ‘Un-Competition’ which is de-
signed for feedback and display, a poetry compe-
tition sponsored by the Poeta Atlantiae, and a
fingerloop braiding race! I am looking forward
to seeing what people come up with.
At Sacred Stone’s Baronial Birthday we have 5
competitions. With this year’s theme being Mo-
roccan, all of the A&S will follow suit. We have
a Leather and Jewelry competition (extra points
for leather jewelry!), a Non-Alcoholic Drink
competition that is populace vote, a Silent Auc-
tion where entrants hock their wares, and a poet-
ry competition sponsored by the Poeta Atlantiae!
This year, Their Excellencies Sine and Oshi are
also choosing their new Baronial Artisan. I wish
everyone who enters good luck, and I look for-
ward to seeing your wonderful creations and
tasting those yummy non-alcoholic drinks!
I have some plans for Baronial A&S gatherings,
so keep an eye on the Baronial e-list for infor-
mation!

From the Seneschal of the Canton of Mid-
dlegate:
The Canton of Middlegate continues to work hard and
explore new ideas.
Our recently launched Blogletter has been well received
and has been featured on the Kingdom of Atlantia Face-
book page, one article is now included on the Atlantian
A&S Links page and a few articles have been included
on Stefans Florilegium.
Our Canton Meeting and two of our weekly A&S nights
are now taking place at a local coffee shop in Greensbo-
ro. This has been a great boon to the Canton so far as we
have attracted a great deal of curiosity, lots of questions
from onlookers and best yet, we have brought in 8 new
participants over the last two months, several of whom
will be in attendance at Flight of the Falcon.
Plans and work are underway for next years installment
of our local event, ….of the Stone. Be prepared to be
transported to Germany, watch for more details about
Gesangs of the Stone.
Greetings from your Baronial Chronicler
I just wanted to take a moment to say that this
will be my last newsletter as your Baronial
Chronicler. Lady Catherine Ambrose will offi-
cially be stepping up in Sept to take my place.
It has been my honor to serve as your Chronicler
and I hope you will give her your support and
send your articles and reports to her.
Thanks,
Yours in Service,
Lady Caitlin MacDonoghue

Baronial Rapier Challenge
My name is Signore Vincenzo d'Este, Rapier Champion of the Barony of the Sacred Stone. I have heard the stirrings of rumors that there are those among you who see yourselves fit to succeed me in my position as Champion.
I am issuing a challenge to all those who find themselves worthy. At the celebration of our great Barony's birthday, I will take the field and allow all those who seek to take my position to prove themselves worthy before their Excellencies of Sacred Stone.
I challenge you not only to prove yourselves on the field of battle, but also to show your skill in an art beyond the scope of combat. You will also need to speak your in-tentions and ideas for your time as champion. Prove to them that you are honorable both on and off the field, that you are ready to improve not just yourself, but the Barony of which we are all a part, that you will heed their word, and that you will strive in all your actions to show the courtesy and skill which our barony is so proud to display.
If you think that you can do all that is asked, then present yourselves to myself at the upcoming celebration and let us see if you can prove yourself ready to become the next great champion of our barony.
In service,
Signore Vincenzo d'Este
The rules of combat will be a round robin tourney using only a single blade. We will fight best 2 out of 3 with each match. The final round will be between the top two scoring fighters of the round robin.
The fighters will have to present an A&S project matching one of the categories that are being used for the event.
Their Excellencies also want some time to speak with each fighter about their inten-tions for their time as champion if they are selected.

The Ipswich Mint
Part One: The Hobby of Kings
When I first joined the Society for Creative Anachronism, the collecting, cleaning and attribution
of ancient coins (in specific Roman coins) was to be my Arts & Sciences focus. This will be a se-
ries of articles on what I learned way back when. Enjoy.
Brief History and Justification
To begin, the first minting of coinage occurred in about the sev-
enth to sixth century BC. There is some debate as to where the
first coins were minted, but the ancient civilizations of Anatolia,
Greece, India and China are all likely candidates. Before the ap-
pearance of coins, precious metals were commonly used as the
basis for trade, but needed to be carefully weighed at each transaction and the purity of the
metal verified. This was probably not conducive to a rapid exchange of goods. The development
of minted coinage in which the weight and metal composition were certified by a government
represented a significant advance in the evolution of commerce.
When I first started this hobby, I was told on several occasions that this was not a valid ‘period’
project. Well, I have to disagree. There are many indications that the collecting of coins beyond
the purpose of simply hoarding them dates back to at least the Roman Era. Emperor Augustus is
often cited as being one of the first collectors of coins. According to Suetonius in his De vita
Caesarum (The Lives of the Twelve Caesars), written in the first century CE, the Emperor Augus-
tus sometimes presented old and exotic coins to friends and courtiers during festivals and other
special occasions. During the reign of Trajanus Decius (ad 249–251), the Roman mint issued a se-
ries of coins commemorating all of the deified emperors from Augustus through Severus Alexan-
der. The designs on these coins replicated those of coins issued by the honoured rulers—some
of the original coins being nearly 300 years old by that time. It would have been necessary for
the mint to have examples of the coins to use as prototypes, and it is hard to see such an assem-
blage as anything but a collection. The eminent French numismatist Ernest Babelon, in his 1901
work Traité des monnaies Grecques et Romaines, refers to a manuscript dating to 1274, Thesau-
rus magnus in medalis auri optimi, which recorded a formal collection of ancient coins at a mon-
astery in Padua, Italy.
Page 13
14
During the 15th and 16th centuries, ancient-coin collecting became the “hobby of kings,” and the
list of collectors is a list of European nobility. The Italian scholar and poet Petrarch is credited with
being the pursuit's first and most famous aficionado. Following his lead, many European kings,
princes, and other nobility kept collections of ancient coins. Some notable collectors were Pope
Boniface VIII, Emperor Maximilian of the Holy Roman Empire, Louis XIV of France, Ferdinand I,
Henry IV of France and Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg.
It is during the Renaissance that the collection of ancient coins became known as the “Hobby of
Kings”, perhaps because only the very wealthy could afford the pursuit. In these early days, coin
collecting was very much associated with art collecting. Coins were valued as much or more for
attractive or interesting imagery, as they were for scarcity or historic significance.

Flight of the Falcon
135 Camp Sertoma Road
Dallas, NC 28034
August, 17th 2013
Come one, come all. The time for Flight of the Falcon is here again. From marshall activities
and arts and sciences to classes and dancing, we have something for everyone.
On the fighting field, we promise enough heavy and rapier fighting to leave even the heartiest
fighter winded. Headed by our own Lord Symon de Ipswich, we invite all fighters to come demonstrate
their prowess for all to see. We plan on an Introduction to Tourney class to be held field side so that
those who are not familiar or those that just have questions may have a proper demonstration of tech-
niques.
For those that the fiber arts holds more sway, we offer a Fiber Solar. Whether you are new to
fumbling with string or a laurel looking to reconnect with your fellow fiber artists, we invite all to attend.
There will also be an Un-competition. For those of you not familiar, this competition is open to any and
all projects and finished products. There is no judging, just constructive feedback and admiration.
Next to Poeta Atlantiae, the theme of which will not be unveiled until the day of the event. Come and
spin rhymes and words into glorious poetry. And lastly, ready? Set? Go!!! A fingerloop braiding race
to see who is the fastest and most accurate braider in the barony. You will have one minute, so be
ready to see fingers fly.
Classes will be offered through the course of the day. A list of classes and times will be availa-
ble at gate.
The feast is a delicious string of dishes created by Lady Aine O Grienan. From Pork and Apple
Pie to Roasted Chicken and Fruit Kebobs, this promises to be a real treat. And shrouded in mystery is
what delectable surprise Lady Aine has in store for desert.
Following feast, there will be dancing in the hall. Musicians and dancers come enjoy the revelry
as we dance the night away.
Merchants are encouraged to contact the Reservationist, Lady Elizabeth Sabine de Northum-
berland. We are working towards having a true period market place for all to enjoy.
Please come join us for this wonderful event and help us make it truly spectacular!

Rowan County Fair Demo
Sat 21-Sep-2013 13:00 w/tourneys at 6:00PM and 8:00PM
In honor of the Battle of Saint Mathews Day (21 Sep 1217)
(A battle between the Teutonic Knights and Estonians)
The Canton of Salesberie Glen will host 2 Bearpit Tourneys at the fair.
There will be two 1 hour bearpit tournaments (tentatively set for 6:00PM and 8:00PM)
The combatant with the most points from both tourneys will win the Tourney prize.
We will start the tournaments with a parade thru the fairgrounds to the stadium where the tour-
neys will occur (ala a Knights tale).
The tourneys will begin with a best out of 3 melees.
The Tourney Prize will be a Stein commemorating the tournament (like the St Urhos’s Tourna-
ment Steins in the past)
The SCA will also have an area set up throughout the day for demonstrations of the gentler arts
(weaving, embroidery, chainmail construction, leather working etc)
This is not an event, this is a demo. The fair draws literally many thousands of people, and
should be a great place to recruit.
The SCA tournament is entertainment for the fair goers, and will have some theatrics thrown in
to further entertain the crowd.
I am looking for fighters as well as arts oriented people. This has the possibility of becoming a
major recurring demo for Salesberie Glen. The fair is very excited to have us, as we are some-
thing new and fresh for them. Salesberie Glen locals…I am also looking for people who can at-
tend the fair during the week leading up to the 21st in garb to distribute Tournament info to fair-
goers
Entrance on these days will be free as well.
I need a head count of people planning on attending so I can arrange for free entrance for SCA
participants.
