“The first of Elul is New Year for the cattle-tithe, but according to Rav Eliezer and Rav Simeon, it is on the first of Tishrei.” [Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1:1].
The 2-day observance of the Jewish month of Elul starts at sunset on Friday, 14 AUG 2015. In addition to the new year for tithing animals, Elul marks a period of introspection prior to Rosh Hashanah. Services include sounding the shofar on weekdays. Elul reminds us that while G-d is always willing to accept teshuvah (“return”), this time is a particular opportune moment. Memorialize someone you love in the Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH) Book of Life, read during Yom Kippur Yizkor services. We require written inputs to arrive at the synagogue no later than 08 SEP 2015 (the day after Labor Day). Please review the enclosed the form, which lists suggested donations and other memorial opportunities. We bring in Elul with a joint Erev Shabbat service and dinner with our programming partner, Temple Israel, on Friday, 14 AUG 2015 in the KBH sanctuary. The dinner is free for children 5 and under, $9.00 for those between 6 and 13, and $18 for others. Please RSVP by 10 AUG 2015 to [email protected]. Kehillat Bet Hamidrash – the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue – intends to publish a membership list for distribution during the holidays in September 2015. Other local organizations may request this information. We will not publish telephone numbers or e-mail addresses. To opt out, please e-mail the synagogue at [email protected] or send a note via the U.S. mail by Friday, 04 SEP 2015. The Schechner Family gracefully opens their home to the KBH congregation for a Saturday evening social at 8:45 PM, 15 AUG 2015. Please RSVP by 12 AUG 2015 to [email protected] and receive details. Cost? A non-perishable food product or toiletry item for the food locker. We also have a special Torah Talk after services on Saturday, 13 AUG 2015. The program takes a pause in September, but returns the third Shabbat of the secular month in OCT 2015.
The next book for President’s Book Club is The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel.

Yom Kippur Book of Life Information 23 SEP 2015 / 10 Tishrei 5776
ה"ב
Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH), the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, distributes a Book of Life on Yom Kippur. Participants dedicate this pamphlet in memory of family and friends, whose names we read during the Yom Kippur Yizkor (Memorial) service. By honoring their memory through gifts of tzedakah, their contributions become a living memorial and support the continuity of Jewish life and community.
Yom Kippur starts the evening of 22 SEP 2015 on this year’s secular calendar, with Yizkor occurring around noon on 23 SEP 2015. The Book of Life automatically includes those you memorialize with a synagogue yahrzeit plaque. If you wish to include an additional name in the KBH Book of Life, we request a donation of $36 for the first two names, with $10 for each additional name. Please neatly print the name of the person you wish to include, and the person(s) remembering the name we shall read. We assume you wish the names grouped together unless otherwise indicated. This year, we need your inputs before Rosh Hashanah. Kindly include your donation with your request to arrive no later than Tuesday, 08 SEP 2015 to:
Kehillat Bet Hamidrash Attn: Book of Life 952 Indian Lakes Boulevard Virginia Beach, VA 23464-5655
We cannot guarantee acceptance or publication of submissions that arrive after 08 SEP 2015 or any verbal requests. We will print your input as per the following example (please add additional sheets of paper, if necessary):
