Dear Members, Donors and Readers,

In the recent past, there has been a lot of debate on

“tolerance” and “intolerance” in our society. Several

prominent individuals have expressed concern and

mentioned that there is growing level of intolerance. Many

artists and scholars sharing a similar opinion have resorted to

return their national awards famously known “Award Wapsi”. There is an equally

strong opinion in the public including several noted personalities that our

country is intrinsically a “tolerant” nation and this fabric remains intact till date.

This divided opinion clearly indicates that the opinion of “tolerance” or

“intolerance” is very subjective and one needs to take into account social

behaviour of other societies and countries before forming an opinion.

Additionally, we need to be careful in articulating the opinion as these have vast

ramifications in a globally connected world. Tolerance to others views and

opinions, tolerance with colleagues at work, tolerance with family members at

home binds and creates an integrated society. In the same breath, intolerance

against injustice, intolerance against corruption and other social evils,

intolerance against violation of rules helps create a better society. However, it is

essential that tolerance and intolerance opinions are articulated in a fair, non-

violent and non-intrusive manner.

As you all know AVOPA was founded with several noble objectives for the

betterment of our society. The success of our programmes and initiatives largely

depends on the members of AVOPA. I request all the members to come forward

and donate generously, thus helping AVOPA to widen the scope of its activities. I

also request members to participate actively in all AVOPA programmes as in the

past.

AVOPA conducted “Sri M.R.Arya Centenary Commemoration lecture

programme” on January 3rd 2016. The programme was conducted in a congenial

manner and was very well received by the members of AVOPA.

As in the past, AVOPA conducted international trips to Dubai this month based

on the request from the members. It is heartening to inform you that there was an overwhelming demand

from the members and hence 2 trips were conducted at short interval.

As India makes its demographic transition toward lower birth rates and higher life expectancy, the

prevalence of non-communicable diseases is on the rise. India is the “Diabetes Capital of the World” with

over 60 million diabetics in the country, that is projected to at least double by 2030. A major obstacle to

diabetes in elderly health is the lack of awareness. In order to address this problem, AVOPA has come up

with a novel idea of conducting a Diabetic workshop in association with Vasavi Hospital, a prestigious super

speciality hospital of our community. The workshop will be conducted on Sunday, 7th February 2016.. This

programme will help spread awareness on Diabetes as well provide information regarding early detection of

Diabetes as well as necessary preventive actions to avoid the ill effects of Diabetes. The members are

requested to participate enthusiastically in the programme and avail the benefits.

It was festival time this January and I hope each one of you celebrated and enjoyed MakaraSankranthi

festival with kin and kith. I hope this festival renewed and re-energised the bonding with family and friends.

Additionally, January was also an occasion of a national festival – Republic Day, the day on which the

Constitution of India came into force completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent

republic.
