YOUNG FIRE VICTIM’S FORTITUDE INSPIRES DONATION FROM

VFW POST 358BALLSTON SPA - The fortitude demonstrated by a teenager who persevered to complete a military awareness Eagle Scout project despite losing his home in a fire has so inspired Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 358 in Ballston Spa that mem-bers are donating $500 to a fund established to assist the young man’s family. “VFW Post 358 has always supported our local youth and especially those in the Scouting program,” said Quartermaster John Lombardo. “When we heard of the devastation experienced by one of our own, there was no question about what we were going to do. Troop 1 Boy Scout Eddie Rock not only experienced adversity, he displayed a level of perseverance and dedication that is in keeping with his new Eagle rank and the values of the veteran community. By pushing forward with his project for veterans, Eddie gave us glimpse into what he is made of – and we’re proud of him. We truly hope we were able to help this young man and his family in their time of need.” An account called “Rock, the Rock House Fund” has been established by the Boy Scouts to assist the family. Spokesperson Glenn Harrison expressed gratitude to community for its support to date. “The fund has thus far received a few thousand dollars which has helped to cover some daily living expenses, but more donations are needed to assist with many other expenses and to replace items lost in the fire,” said Harrison. To this end, plans are in the works for a benefit dinner and a fund-raising concert to aid the Rock, the Rock House Fund. Details will be announced soon. In the meantime, Harrison said, “People can make contribu-tions and send notes of encouragement to the Rocks at any Ballston Spa National Bank branch or by mail to: BSNB Corpo-

rate Branch, Box 70, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.” For more in-formation, please email Har-rison at [email protected] or call 518-461-1295.

MEMORABILIA ON DISPLAY AT CITY CENTER

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The City Center’s lobby is fi lled with several local treasures for residents and visitors to enjoy this summer. Currently on display are the Saratoga En Pointe bal-let shoes and the “Saratoga Surrender” bronze on loan from the Friends of the Saratoga Battlefi eld. Special selections from the private collection were made for the City Center exhibit and include an antique sulky and driver’s colors. The public is encouraged to trot or gallop down to the City Center to experience this colorful dis-play which is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, now through Friday, September 12th. This exhibit will spark your interest in a diff erent type of horse racing and will leave you curious to know more. After stopping into the City Center make a point to visit the museum located at 352 Jeff erson Street in Saratoga Springs to see their inspired full presentation. CITY CENTER SHOWCASING

VINTAGE WEDDING

GOWN DISPLAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The City Center is pleased to announce the opening of a beautiful new exhibit entitled, “Here Comes the Bride.” The exhibit which in-cludes three gowns from the mid-twentieth century, are on loan from The Saratoga County Historical Society at the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. All are part of a collection from the Emma Willard School. Each gown is an excellent example of a specifi c time and design era for wedding apparel. This is the fourth exhibit to grace the lobby and “Bring People Together,” during the facility’s land-mark 30th Anniversary year. The space is a striking backdrop to highlight unique works of art and historical artifacts. Each exhibit is a cultural delight for the general public as well as meeting and special event guests. Make a point to pop in and see these pretty gowns. There is more to see at the mu-seum; additional gowns, photographs, marriage certifi cates and other bridal items are on display. Brookside Museum is located at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa, NY. The hours of operation are 10am-4pm Tuesday-Friday and 10am-2pm on Saturdays. In last week’s column, I’d just discovered how easily my purple amaranthus self-sowed. After enjoying and experimenting with them for a couple of years, I noticed another variety offered in a seed catalog called ‘Elephant Head’. The fun I was having with my purple variety made me want to give ‘Elephant Head’ a try. Elephant Head’s fl owers supposedly resemble an uplifted, trumpeting head of an elephant. It was hard for me to get the same im-pression from the picture in the catalog but, poetic license aside, it looked like an interesting plant. Seeds were ordered and started inside over winter and planted out in spring. Just like its purple cousin, Elephant Head took off quickly. By the end of July, I had a lovely group of 3’ plants. As advertised, they produced large, dense clusters of tiny purple fl owers. I hesitate to use the term “fl owers”; the fl ower clusters were more of a dense, fuzzy, elongated clump. I must admit that I was having a hard time seeing much of a resemblance to and elephant’s head. To my mind, they looked more like an obscene gesture often exchanged by motor-ists during fi ts of road rage. Regardless of its attitude problem, I enjoyed the presence of Elephant Head Amaranthus in the fl owerbed.

I assumed that Elephant Head would self-sow as readily as its cousin did so I didn’t bother to collect any seeds that fall. The following spring, I was disappointed to fi nd only three or four coming up. Though few in number, they did quite well. That fall, I pulled them up by the roots and hung them upside down indoors. I wrapped newspaper around them to catch the seeds. Amaranthus seeds are about the size of poppy seeds and each fl ower head pro-duced thousands of them. I grew a bunch of them the following year and now they, along with my original purple ones from Mont Pleasant come up unbidden all throughout the fl ow-erbed. Now I simply pull out the ones I don’t want and leave the ones I do. That is some easy gardening!

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot more about this interesting family of plants. Like corn, squash, potatoes, marigolds and poinsettias and many other of our favorites, amaranthus comes to us from the ancient Inca and Aztec gardens of Central America. These cultures grew amaranthus as a grain rather than for its ornamental qualities. Ancient gardeners har-vested the seeds which were served as a side dish much like we would rice or potatoes. Un-like rice or potatoes however, amaranthus seeds contain as much as 18% protein and are rich in iron, calcium, lysine and phosphorus. There is also evidence that they toasted the seeds until they popped and ate them as a snack. Sort of miniature popcorn. The grain varieties of amaranthus range in height from 4’ to 8’ and are adaptive to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Interestingly, this adaptability is causing a resurgence in popularity among farm-ers dealing with soils of marginal quality. It may be that the easy-to-grow amaranthus will play an increasingly important role as we attempt to feed the exploding population in the decades to come.

Like many of the plants brought to Europe from the New World during from the 1500s on, amaranthus enjoyed a good bit of popularity there. Plant breeders worked their magic and developed some ornamental varieties you may have heard of. You may remember your grandmother growing ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’. This amaranthus, despite its gloomy name, is a striking plant of 3’ to 5’ with long, fl owing tassels that drape elegantly to the ground. There’s another group of amaranthus that features colorful leaves (called bracts) that simulate fl ow-ers much like a poinsettia does. ‘Joseph’s Coat’ is one you might recognize. ‘Joseph’s Coat’ grows to about 2’ and the top-most leaves are accented with creamy white and scarlet. Oth-ers of this type feature burgundy leaves topped with red bracts. This spring’s Burpee seed catalog offered a yellow topped variety aptly named ‘Poinsettia Mix’.

While you will likely fi nd ‘Joseph’s Coat’ and ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’ on the seed racks at the garden center in spring, the rest will probably need to be mail ordered. I’ve now seen my original purple variety in the Thompson & Morgan seed catalog under the name ‘Intense Purple’. Another seed catalog, Seeds of Change, offers some of the original grain varieties of amaranthus as well as the amusing ‘Elephant’s Head’ variety that I enjoy in my fl owerbed.

If you order and grow amaranthus, you probably won’t have to ever order them again if you take a few minutes in the fall to gather several thousand seeds for yourself and your friends. Thanks for the read.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE SEEN AS ONE OF THE BEST CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

(NewsUSA) - With the economy still so tepid that about 75 percent of all new jobs created this year were part-time, guess which occupation is expected to see an employment growth rate that's faster than the average of all others?

(Hint: It's not coff eehouse baristas, all those recent college grads working shifts notwithstanding.)

Give up? Chiropractors -- with employment projected to rise 28 percent from 2010 to 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Here's what helps explain why Careercast.com ranks these specialists in spinal health and overall well-being No. 11 (out of 200) on its 2013 annual "Jobs Rated" report:

* Personal Satisfaction. How cool is it knowing you're providing patients relief from debili-tating headaches, back, neck and joint pain? Well, the American Journal of Public Health re-ported that "chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfi ed with their back care provid-ers after four weeks of treatment than were medical patients."

* Market Demand. You've got a general public increasingly interested in nonsurgical and drug-free based treatments -- chiropractic care's essence -- plus all those baby boomers des-perate to maintain their active lifestyles. "Time and again, we've seen patients spared surgery through chiropractic care," says David O'Bryon, JD, CAE, executive director of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, who recently launched a strategic partnership with the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (www.yes2chiropractic.org). "Chiropractic's whole-patient approach enlists the body's own healing processes, naturally."

* Career Flexibility. Own-ing your practice means you're the boss. But other options include associating with an established chiro-practor, teaching, conduct-ing research, working within an on-site corporate health clinic and specializing in budding fi elds like sports performance.

FIND OUT THE MEANING BEHIND THE NUMBERS AT THE GAS PUMP

(NAPS)—Are you one of the millions of Americans who will load up their car this summer and head out for a weekend getaway? If you are, you might be paying the price at the gas pump. Across the U.S., consumers paid the highest average price for gas on the Fourth of July since 2008. Like many, you may question why gas prices peak in the summer. What goes into the price of gas? To understand why, you need to con-sider the whole story.

Futures Fundamentals (www.futuresfundamentals.com), the new online resource brought to you by CME Group—the world’s leading derivatives exchange—now provides visitors with an easy-to-follow road map of just how and where the decisions are made that determine the price of fuel.

Futures Fundamentals’ latest tutorial, “Story of Oil,” takes learners on a journey from the ground to the pump through an engaging video and infographic. From extraction to price

discovery at the exchange, and fi nally to the gas station, the journey of gasoline broadens visitors’ understanding of how the world around us works.

The “Story of Oil” is just one of the concepts made simple on the site, which also tackles complex topics like food prices and mortgage rates. “Futures Fundamentals is a relatively new site, but we’re already hearing from teachers that it’s helping their students understand complicated issues. TOP CAR COLOR CHOICES

OF MEN AND WOMEN

(NAPS)—When it comes to car colors, men and women follow diff erent roads.

Colorful Findings

A recent study by iSeeCars.com of more than 30 million cars revealed some illumi-nating information about just how the sexes diverge:

• Surprisingly, the favored car color of men is red, a hue they have a greater prefer-ence for, versus women, by 12.3 percent. Next is orange, which men prefer more by 11.8 percent, and black by 9.6 percent.

• Metallic colors are more popular with women. As opposed to men, women have a greater penchant for silver cars by 9.2 percent, brown by 9.1 percent and gold by 7.3 percent.

• Red and black, preferred car color picks of men, are also the top colors for sports cars. For pickup trucks, white is the most popular color.

• Orange, a less-common car color option but a favorite of men, is found on sports cars and coupés more than any other vehicle type.

The study was conducted by iSeeCars.com, a car search en-gine that helps consumers fi nd the best deals on used cars.

What It All Means

“These study results could suggest that women are more practical in their choices. For the most part, they may just want to buy a reasonably priced car that safely drives them around,” suggested Phong Ly, co-founder and CEO of iSee-Cars.com. “On the other hand, for men, perhaps they may be a bit more idealistic about cars, preferring something that has speed and is fun to drive.
