2 Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – June 16 and June 17, 2018 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, Today we celebrate the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this day, we hear the parable of the mustard seed in the Gospel of Mark (4: 31-32). Just as the tiny mustard seed can produce a tree big enough for the birds of the air to make their nests, we, too, should grow and flourish with the gifts God has given us. Then, when the gifts have been developed, we should then share them – and share them abundantly – with others. That is how we contribute to the building of the Kingdom of God on Earth. Today, in the United States, we celebrate Father’s Day, a day set aside to honor our fathers. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads of community! The parent vocation requires a wide variety of complex life skills and virtues, and it takes a special kind of person to live this vocation faithfully and gracefully! Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Several of us at Outreach are quilters, as is Sr Isaac. We are fortunate to have two groups of quilters that supply us with beautifully made quilts. One group is from the Linus project, and the other is Handmade With Love. Each month, we receive their donations of dozens of small quilts and throws they have made. We set aside some of them to be included in Layette Packs put together by our volunteers . When one of our guests has a newborn, we offer them the thoughtfully gathered layette including many essentials. The remainder of the quilts are kept in the office. When we are interviewing a guest with children in the home, we allow them to pick out a quilt they would like; oftentimes, the children them-selves get to do the choosing. Its heartwarming to see their reaction as they find one that one special quilt that catches their eye as they wrap themselves up in it. We are also blessed to have two women that knit and crochet small afghans for us; one of the women was previously spending time in rehab after a fall and her daughter then brought in 4 bags of items she had made for us during rehab. The other day, I had a woman with a small child in the office. I offered to let the mom pick out a couple quilts for her children, and she went about looking through all the quilts and afghans we had on display. Suddenly her little one shouted out “What are you doin’ goin’ through someone else’s stuff??”. I couldn’t help myself but laugh. (I suppose the little girl
had been on the receiving end of that comment at some time.) Quilters By The Sea Guild of Wilmington also supports Outreach. Their members bring canned food to their monthly meeting to be shared with three food pantries, including ours. They have supported us in several other ways such as raising funds for us through special projects and making gifts for our guests at Christmas; many of their members are regular donors of small quilts as well as clothing and hygiene items. The Guild is having a quilt show called Pieceworks at the Brooklyn Art Center at 516 N. 4th St this coming weekend, Friday, June 22nd from 3:00 pm—9:00 pm, Saturday, June 23rd 10:00 am—5:00 pm and Sunday, June 24th noon—5:00 pm. Stop in and enjoy their crea-tions. Special Need of the Week: Small dinette sets

From the Home and School Association: At the end of the 2017-2018 school year, the HSA Board would like to thank everyone for their continued support.
The HSA’s main goal for this year was to continue to foster a sense of community and to boost school spirit. In the fall, we hosted several fami-ly-friendly events including Falcon Fright Night, chaired by Katie and Phil Dattilo, Bingo Night, chaired by Andrea & Brad Walker , and “In the Kitchen with Kevin” cooking class by Kevin DeMarco. The HSA hosted breakfast for Bishop Zarama’s meeting with the teachers and coordinated parent volunteers for the classrooms. In the spring, the HSA funded Science Day and a No Sleeves Magic show, and provided ice cream for all of our students at Field Day. We also prepared and provided all of the refreshments for the Art Show, along with the 8th grade’s graduation dinner. To help keep parents connected, the HSA initiated and monitored a Facebook page for St. Mary parents. We focused on expressing our appreciation of our teachers throughout the year. It goes without saying that our dedicated teachers are a large part of our school’s success. As we do each year, the HSA provided teacher allotments for classroom supplies and Christmas gifts for teach-ers, assistants, faculty, and staff. We hosted quarterly teacher apprecia-tion lunches and coordinated lunch parent volunteers. We also provided
lunch from Panera on Teacher Appreciation Day and a pre-advent Con-cert dinner for the teachers as many stay at the school the entire day. The HSA presented Mrs. Brown and her impressive Science Olympiad team with flowers to congratulate and thank them for representing our school. And, as a daily reminder of our gratitude, snacks donated were provided throughout the school year in the Teacher’s lounge. Each year, the HSA’s only fundraiser is the Spring Gala. This year’s gala was the S.S. Mary Cruise, chaired by Serena Lau. A big thanks goes to everyone who volunteered, donated, and attended the event. The funds from this event (which are still being finalized) will go toward new playground equipment. We are also in the process of soliciting quotes for playground equipment along with quotes to renovate the cafe-teria and staff bathroom in the lower school using funds raised from last year’s Spring Gala. As you can see, it was a fun-filled, successful year and we couldn’t have done it without you. We are sincerely thankful for your continued partic-ipation, generosity and support. Have a great summer.
School Calendar 2018-19 We are approving event dates and then will publish the full calendar. Meanwhile, I can share the following dates with you so that you can plan. August 20th – PreK Orientation August 21st – K-8 Orientation August 23rd – 1st Day of School, Noon Dismissal August 24th – Half Day of School, Noon Dismissal August 27th – Full Days Begin
Thanks from Fr. Bob!
Many thanks to all of you – students, staff, and
faculty of St. Mary School – for your
beautiful cards, well wishes, and gifts! What a
great surprise! I hope that you will continue to keep me in your prayers as I begin my missionary work in Honduras, and know that I will keep
you and St. Mary School in my prayers. God bless you - and all those you love – today and all the
days of your lives! - Father Bob
St. Mary Athletics Tony Viollis [email protected] Booster Board: I am reaching out to parents who would like to help me with the Athletic Boosters. We would meet once a month and discuss what we can do to make our programs better or more effective. You do not have to be a parent of an athlete. I would like to hold a meeting in June. If you would like to be a part of the decision-making, please get in touch with me via email. Scoreboard Sponsor: Our new scoreboard has an area on the bottom for a sponsorship name. If you or your business would like to help sponsor the new score-board and have your name displayed so all can see at every home game, please contact Mrs. Price or me. Home Games Help: Each season I reach out to par-ents and friends of St. Mary to help run our home ath-letic contests. I do this through a “SignUp Genius” link. Volleyball season comes up first next year. We
will have 4 home games which last about 2 hours each. In addition to watching our kids in action, you would help our athletic program raise funds at each game. Collecting admission fees and working the concession stand are two ways you can help. We also need parents to keep score and work the clock. During the game we are asked to have line judges to help the refs. We need help to staff all of these positions. Please sign up. More information will be coming when we return to school in the fall. Open Gym for Girls’ Volleyball: The gym will be open for 6th-8th grade girls who wish to practice volley-ball skills. The time is Wednesdays from 9:00 – 11:00 am. This will help all of our girls get on the same page skill-wise until we officially begin in August. Open Gym for Boys’ Basketball: I would like to have an open gym for 5th-8th grade basketball boys in June. If your son is interested, please send me an email. Days and times will be set depending on the interest, although it will likely be held in the morning.
