GETTING EXCITED ABOUT EARTH DAY! By Morgan Casey April is here and spring is in the air! This month celebrates Earth Day, Arbor Day, and National Environmental Week, making it a great time to have a conversation with your Little about what else is in the air pollution. Open up a dialogue about pollution and our impact on the Earth. Start by seeing what your Little knows about the reciprocal relationship between people and the environment, and how it impacts our lives. Discuss the environment from perspectives relating to air, water, soil, weather, energy, and even the food we eat. You can set a “green” example for your Little by taking small steps toward being more environmentally friendly.

Take your Little grocery shopping for healthy meal ingredients and bring reusable grocery bags.

Bring your Little to the Farmer’s Market on a Saturday morning, or pick produce at an orchard, farm, or pumpkin patch when your favorite fruits and vegetables are in season.

Make an effort to recycle every time you can, even if it means bringing home your soda cans at the end of an outing instead of throwing them in the trash.

Model ways to conserve water and electricity.

Point out strategies other people and organizations are doing to promote environmental health.

Spending time outdoors with your Little is a great way to spark an interest in nature. Find something positive to help make the environment healthier. Here are some things you can do this month to get your Little excited about the earth:

Go Hiking! There are lots of parks, trails and nature preserves within driving distance you and your Little can explore. Nahant Marsh Exploration, April 9th, 10:00 a.m. Learn about local plant and animal communities through hands-on activities at Nahant Marsh. April’s event includes a guided hike and

outdoor yoga. Living Lands and Waters Tree Wrapping, April 4th-15th, East Moline. Help wrap and package baby trees. To volunteer, sign-up on the LL&W website. River Action’s Earth Day Celebration, Saturday, April 23, 9 a.m. to noon. This year the project will be a clean-up at the Hennepin Park at Lock 30 in Milan, IL. They will be doing invasive plant removal, trash pick-up, and pollinator garden planting. Directions: Take Airport Road east of Milan. North on Frontage Road (look for the brown Hennepin sign)

and then take an immediate right. Follow to the parking lot. For more information contact Eileen at [email protected]. Spring Cleanup at Nahant Marsh, April 23rd, 9:00 a.m. to Noon Help clean up litter and pull weeds at the marsh. Gloves and other safety gear provided, but rain boots are recommended.

BBBS Plant Sale, April 29th-May 7th.

VOLUNTEER TO WORK AT PLANT SALE! Bring your Little to help out at Plant Sale after school

or on the weekends. 2-3 hour shifts. (April 28—May 7). Email Kayla: [email protected]

Rainy day? Stay in and watch “The Lorax”, or go to the library and read books about taking care of the environment. Homemade bird-feeders are a great indoor craft project you can do together, too!

COMMUNITY NIGHT AT MOE’S SOUTHWEST GRILL Community Impact Night is a night when restaurants give back to local non-profit organizations, and help bring awareness to area causes.

On Tuesday, April 12th, BBBS will receive a percentage of

the sales, plus any tips collected during the evening.

Leading up to the dates, our role is to HELP SPREAD THE WORD. Invite family, friends, matches, and neighbors to take the night off and go out for dinner to help make an impact with local children! We are asked to supply volunteers at Moe’s Southwest Grill to help wait on tables and provide good customer service. Please note there is a waiver that all volunteers will need to sign. Littles are encouraged to join their Bigs to gain first hand

experience of waiting tables. Contact Jaime Keller at [email protected] or call 563-323-8006. Moe’s is located at: 4046 E 53rd St, Davenport, IA in the North Ridge Shopping Center (near Old Navy and Bed, Bath and Beyond.)

Over the years our Career Navigator Tours have provided inspiration and direction for Littles. BBBS has heard many stories about Littles deciding to enroll in higher education to begin work on a degree related to what they experienced on a CN Tour. It’s difficult for any teenager to imagine what they want to do when they become an adult, but it can be especially

challenging for a Little who is potentially facing many obstacles they will have to overcome in order to go on to higher education or an apprenticeship. Exploring career options and providing your Little not only with ideas, but with hope that they can pursue their dreams is very important in providing the Little with the motivation and encouragement they need.

Learn how to get the most from your mentor relationship! Join us for the Big and Little Training (BLT) on Sat., April 16, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

at the Davenport Library Eastern Avenue Branch, 6000 Eastern Ave., Davenport, IA This training is designed for all matches who have been matched 3-6 months, but open to any match that would like to attend.

To RSVP call 563-323-8006 or email: Katie at [email protected] or Kathryn at [email protected]

DEAR MATCH COACH: WHAT IS BIG/LITTLE TRAINING?

RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE: WAY TO READ CYRUS!

BIG/LITTLE TRAINING FOR APRIL:

Dear Match Coach: What is the new “Big Little Training”?

Our Big Little Training (or BLT) is geared toward matches that have been together for at least three months. The training will involve fun activities, food, and a portion of the night where Bigs and Littles are split up. Your Little will be able to participate in some fun games while you attend a discussion with other volunteers and BBBS staff. We’ll talk about different strategies that can be applied now that you and your Little know each other a little more. You will have the chance to learn from other volunteers, as well as share

tips you’ve learned about being a mentor. No matter what has been going on in your match, this is an important experience that is an essential step in our matching process. BLTs will be held monthly so you can make sure to attend one within the first few months of your match. We want all of our matches who have reached their three month anniversary to be at the training, and would love to see any other matches who would like to attend. It is a great, easy activity for any match. Check Coaches Corner for each month’s upcoming training date and feel free to ask your match coach if you have any questions.

Cyrus is 11 years old and in the 5th grade. He enjoys playing games and spending time with his Big, Mary Thee. Cyrus’ school has required him to read 40 books throughout the 2015-16 school

year. Cyrus struggled to find the perfect strategy to help complete his reading goal. With the help of his Big, Mary, the match finally

figured out the perfect method to help reach his target of 40 chapter books. Now Cyrus enjoys reading and has recently

completed an entire Goosebumps book. Great job Cyrus and keep up the great work!

Fairy Lantern and Team Night Light Supplies needed for Fairy Lantern: • Fairy silhouette printout • Any Glass Jars with a Lid (Jam, Relish, or Mason Jar) • Thin White Tissue Paper • White School Glue or Any Glue that Dries Clear • Clear Glitter • Twine • Floral Embellishments ● Battery Powered Tea Lights or Battery-Operated LED String Lights Instructions for Fairy Lantern: First, glue the Fairy cut-out to the inside of the jar. Then glue one sheet of white tissue paper to the outside of the jar, leaving a small seam in the back. Don’t cover the lid. Next, add glue all around the top and bottom strip of the white tissue paper, adding clear glitter to both strips of glue. Do not glitter all the white paper because the light will not be as bright. Once dry, fold the twine in half and tie in a bow at the top of the jar. Decorate the bow with flowers or berries. Once every-thing is dried, place the battery-operated tea lights or LED string lights

inside the jar, and close with lid. This can be used as a nightlight or as a decoration. Supplies needed for Team Night Light • Printout of Team Helmet and Name • Team Fabric or Team Colors Fabric (Optional) • White School Glue that Dries Clear • Any Glass Jars with a Lid (Jam, Relish, or Mason Jar) • Battery Powered Tea Lights or Battery Operated LED String Lights Instructions for Team Night Light: First, glue the team helmet cut-out to the inside of the jar, gluing the team’s name underneath. Once dried, place the battery-operated tea lights or LED string lights inside. Optional step: Use fabric with the team’s logo to cut a square two inches bigger than the lid. Put the fabric inside the lid, gluing only to the top. Once dried, turn on lights and attach lid. This can be used as a nightlight or as a decoration.

Instructions: This colorful project is great for spring and summer décor! Just paint the bottom of the pine cone in bright colors with a yellow center. Once dried, group pine cones together in a bowl like a bouquet and place on any table.

BBBS TRIVIA NIGHT A HUGE SUCCESS!

Our Trivia Night fundraiser was a night we’ll always remember. 200 people showed up to play trivia and support our program. We had WIU Volleyball and a team from Citizens Bank (including a Board member and a current Big) do the set up and clean up; we had another Board member/Big, her sister, husband/Big, and 2 more current Bigs do the cooking and serving; we had 7 great local restaurants/bars donate prizes; we had 2 local celebs as our emcees; and we had a favorite local musician perform. AND we raised 250% more than last year!!! An unparalleled success. 1,000 thanks to everyone who helped, on any level.

Next up on our fundraising schedule…All Fore! The Kids. For this event, which is sponsored by the WIU Veterans Club, we have WIU student organizations build miniature golf holes in Brophy Gym. All proceeds benefit our BBBS kids and the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (which helps put the children of military killed in action through college). $5 to play, and open to the public. The event is tentatively scheduled for 19 April 2016 from 6-9pm. Call us today to register, and walk-ins are welcome!

COACHES CORNER MONEY-WISE KIDS: NEEDS VS WANTS

Tori’s breath caught in her throat. There it was, the latest iPhone. She really, really

wanted it even though the phone next to

it was ten times cheaper. Making

decisions isn’t always easy. Trying to

figure out your needs from your wants is even harder.

Tori was torn. She thought she needed a new phone. But did she really need it or did she want it? It was making her head spin. She fought the overwhelming urge to scream. One of the biggest obstacles to establishing a better financial future is knowing when to say no. Tori can get a better understanding of the situation by determining her needs from her wants. A want is something Tori would like to have, but doesn’t need it in order to live. A need is something she has to have in order to live. Needs include food, a place to live and clothes. Here’s the tricky part, sometimes what she thinks she needs is actually a want. Tori needs clothes to wear, but she doesn’t need a brand new expensive pair of jeans when a less expensive pair will do. When Tori stopped to think about it more, she realized she wanted a new phone, she didn’t need it. She studied her old phone. There wasn’t anything wrong with it. Maybe a little scratched up, but that’s not a reason to get a new phone. Remember, everyone’s needs and wants are different. You need to determine what’s best for you. When trying to determine your needs and wants, ask yourself the following questions: Do I need this to get to school? Do I need a bike, skateboard or a car? I need a new sweater for winter, but is it necessary to have the

designer version that costs $50 more? Even though both will keep me warm? Remember... What do you need? What do you want? How are you going to get it?

Thanks to IHMVCU for their sponsorship of the BBBS Money-Wise Kids program!

Are The Calories In That Drink Worth It? While striving to develop or maintain a healthy lifestyle, many people cut foods from their diet, especially if their main goal is to lose weight. But people often forget the silent culprit that adds many unnecessary calories to their diet: their drink. In reality, many of our favorite beverages are loaded with added calories and sugars that hinder our weight loss efforts or have a negative impact on our health. It may be time to rethink that drink! Calories in Drinks Companies don’t hide the calories in their beverages, however, it’s easy to ignore just how many calories a soft drink or juice can add to the recommended daily intake for you and your Little. For example, do you like to grab a medium latte before heading to work? That’s around 265 calories. That soda your Little had with lunch could add an extra 227 calories. You also need to be aware of juices. They may not be the healthy drink option you’ve been looking for. A 20-ounce container of 100 percent apple juice provides 300 calories. Even milk isn’t low-calorie. Milk contains vitamins and minerals that your Little needs to have good health, but choose a low-fat or fat-free milk in place of whole milk or 2

percent. Don’t Be Fooled By Sugar Sugar has many names, which may not be obvious. Some beverages claim to be sugar-free but in reality are not. If you see any of these names below in the ingredients list,

it’s a sugar-sweetened beverage:

Fructose ● High-fructose corn syrup

Honey ● Fruit juice concentrate

Syrup ● Corn syrup

Sucrose ● Dextrose Choosing Healthy Drinks Below are a few tips that can help make drink decisions a little easier.

Instead of sugar-packed drinks, keep a jug or bottle of water in the fridge.

Carry a water bottle around with you and fill it regularly.

Add fruit to water to add extra flavor. Add 100 percent fruit juice to sparkling water for a low-calorie drink. You don’t have to skip your morning coffee run altogether. You have several options such as asking for fat-free milk, forgoing additional flavors, and saying no to whipped cream. Healthy drinks are possible when you take the time to learn what’s going into them! Learn to Read Nutrition Labels Many 20 ounce bottles only show the nutrition information for eight ounces while stating there are 2.5 servings in the bottle. If you are drinking the whole bottle you must multiply the number of calories by the number of servings. So if the label says the drink has 100 calories per serving, the whole bottle would contain 250 calories. Healthy Drinks Are Only Part of the Puzzle There are plenty of healthy drink choices available, but paying attention to what you’re drinking doesn’t mean you can never indulge. Treat yourself to that soda, juice or low-calorie latte every once in a while. Just remember to keep it a reward and not daily habit.
