WELCOMEWe always try to present the most exciting, varied and highest-quality programme possible.

By inviting to Birmingham performing companies not just from our own country, but from around the world, I hope we can achieve that aim.

In this enticing new season, performers from as far away as Brazil, Canada and Russia sit alongside our very best home-grown talent. I hope this will encourage you to try some new theatre experiences alongside our more familiar programme of the finest in dance, opera and musical theatre from the UK.

I’d like to highlight the Mariinsky Opera’s presentation of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. Ring cycles don’t come around very often due to the enormous resources required to stage them, and so this is probably a once-in-a-generation opportunity to see this epic production in its entirety.

Alongside new shows from some of the world’s top producers, we are also able to present some new cultural adventures created by the Hippodrome and partners. About Town, our first venture into the world of video art, and the mysterious The Frozen Scream will give you some new artistic experiences in unfamiliar places.

As always, our mission is to provide you with the best possible experience of theatre anywhere, and we will do our utmost to fulfil that promise every time you visit us.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

A towering gothic fairytale from the creator of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s smash-hit Cinderella.

A cruel Prince, cursed to spend his life living in a fantastical castle with the animals he callously hunted, finds salvation in the heart of a beautiful girl. Caught stealing a single rose, Belle’s desperate father exchanges his life for his youngest daughter’s freedom. In his distant castle the Beast, stripped of his handsome features and his very humanity, must win her heart, or spend the rest of his life in bitter solitude.

A beautiful girl, a hideous beast, a golden ballroom full of animals, two haughty sisters and a grumpy grandmother dance through the unfolding pages of Philip Prowse’s stunning storybook set, whilst David Bintley’s rich choreography brings to life magical transformations, wild waltzes, and a relationship between Belle and the Beast that is at first terrifying, but ultimately beautiful.

Birmingham Royal Ballet presents three one-act ballets, each touched in their own way by the shadow of war.

The triple bill opens with Kenneth MacMillan’s La Fin du Jour, capturing the glamorous lifestyle of the 1930s wealthy, using Maurice Ravel’s score to create an elegy to a lifestyle lost to World War II.

Miracle in the gorbals has been specially re-created for the Company by Dame Gillian Lynne, from Robert Helpmann’s original work set in 1940s Glasgow and danced to music by Sir Arthur Bliss.

The programme closes with David Bintley’s Flowers of the Forest; with music by Malcolm Arnold and Benjamin Britten, it contrasts picture-postcard Scotland with its own bloody history.

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production recently surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” Jack Tinker, Daily Mail.

Tue 28 & Wed 29 Oct, 7.30pmBrazil’s internationally acclaimed dance company make a welcome return to the UK following an enormously successful tour in 2005. Grupo Corpo combine the precision of classical ballet with the sensuality and passion of Latin dance rhythms. The 22 dancers fill the stage with elegant, virtuosic and joyful dance which has audiences in raptures.

Grupo Corpo perform two pieces choreographed by artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras. sem Mim is beautifully melancholic and focuses on a group of villagers who wait for the return of their fishermen. Dressed in intricately patterned bodysuits, the dancers move as waves; their bodies mimicking the calm and fury of the sea. An enormous shimmering net hangs over the stage, at times trapping the dancers in its folds.

Company favourite Parabelo is inspired by life in rural Brazil. It sees the dancers sweep across the stage, moving rhythmically from group to solo and back again. There are moments of utter peace and stillness and others of raucous Brazilian carnival.

“I’m delighted to bebringing our Ring Cycle

to Birmingham. InOssetia, where I come

inspired Wagner.

I believed that we couldcreate a new visual approach

to the Ring that had an international resonance.”

VAlERY gERgIEV

Wed 5 – Sun 9 Nov

Birmingham Hippodrome presents Wagner’s epic ring Cycle conducted by Valery gergiev with his world-famous Mariinsky Opera.

The ring is a tale of gods and heroes, dwarves and giants – yet its characters are driven by passions that are all too human. The theft of magical gold from the depths of the River Rhine and its forging into the Ring sets in train the story of a world corrupted by greed and the lust for power that may only be redeemed, finally, by an act of selfless love.

Das rhEingOLD Starting in the depths of the river Rhine and finishing on the cloud-capped heights of Valhalla, fortress home of the gods, Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold sets in motion his epic, four-opera Ring cycle - and an unparalleled musical and dramatic journey begins.

DiE WaLKÜrE The world of gods, dwarves and giants gives way to a world of heroes: in the second instalment of The Ring it is human emotion that takes centre stage.

siEgFriED With its unbreakable sword, its dragon and its sleeping maiden surrounded by a barrier that only a fearless hero may penetrate, Siegfried has the quality of a good fairy tale, and is set to some of Wagner’s most vigorously exciting music.

gÖTTErDÄMMErung The Ring surges to its magnificent conclusion, in which the age of the gods comes to an end and a new world arises from the ashes of the old.

Let yourself get swept up in the excitement of Christmas with one of the most famous classical ballets of all time, Tchaikovsky’s The nutcracker.

Sir Peter Wright’s unparalleled, world-famous production, complete with sets and costumes by John Macfarlane, the designer of the Company’s stunning Cinderella, is performed in Birmingham this Christmas.

What more could a young girl ask for at Christmas, than for all her dreams to come true? Having crept downstairs at midnight to play with her new Nutcracker doll, Clara is swept up in a fantasy of toy soldiers, giant rats, snow fairies, magic and mystery. After saving her beloved Nutcracker from the King of the Rats, she is whisked away to an enchanted land and dances the night away in his arms, meeting a host of strange and exotic characters, before she is finally transformed into a beautiful ballerina.

Based on the lost 1928 supernatural murder-mystery novel, The Frozen scream tells the chilling tale of a group who find themselves stranded at an abandoned lodge in the depths of winter. Forced to entertain themselves, they begin to tell the tale of Jack Frost, the most terrifying of the Frost Giants. But as the story takes a shocking twist, they discover they should have heeded the early warnings to ‘beware the ice’.

Surrounded by mystery and intrigue, the original novel was quick to receive critical acclaim but fell out of favour when a series of mysterious deaths led to the belief that the novel was cursed. Undeterred by these conspiracy theories, Oliver Award-winning entertainer Christopher green (Tina C, Ida Barr, Office Party) and one of the UK’s best-selling novelists, sarah Waters (Tipping the Velvet, The Little Stranger) bring this largely unread work to the stage in an adaptation that will send shivers down your spine this winter. But is everything as it seems?

serenade is a stunning piece of pure dance from master choreographer George Balanchine, performed to the glorious music of Tchaikovsky. A milestone in the history of dance, this minimal and elegant piece is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America.

Award-winning American Choreographer Jessica Lang’s Lyric Pieces was commissioned for International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012, her first work for a major European company. Lang uses Grieg’s romantic musical miniatures and creates a work described by The Stage as “A ballet of dreams and romantic moods which succeeds beautifully”.

in the upper room features dancers in trainers and striking red pointe shoes who dominate the stage with energy and flair in this exhilarating ballet by American dance phenomenon Twyla Tharp. Philip Glass’s score builds to an emotional peak with dancing the press described as “quick-witted and even quicker footed”.

Magic, mayhem and the original living doll.

What’s at the heart of a woman? Eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius wants to know, and he’s planning to bring his mechanical doll, Coppélia, to life – he just needs the right spell.

When Dr Coppélius leaves Coppélia on his workshop balcony she’s soon causing quite a stir in the village. Particularly in the heart of red-blooded young lover Franz, and the jealous mind of his real-life fiancée, Swanilda – who’s mistaken the mannequin for a crying, talking, sleeping, walking rival. With a wild mix of abracadabra, and some mischievous maidens, comic chaos is riotously unleashed when humans and automatons collide in Dr Coppélius’s spooky toyshop.

Peter Wright’s enchanting production of this joyous and witty ballet is an ever-popular celebration of love, with a sparkling score and breathtaking choreography. Coppélia is guaranteed to lift the hearts of all the family.

Cirque Éloize’s Cirkopolis is a show combining the worlds of circus, dance and theatre. Set in the heart of a stern and imposing factory-city, giant gears and dark portals symbolize a mechanism that crushes individuality. Twelve acrobats and performers rebel against the monotony, reinvent themselves and challenge the limits.

In a world where fantasy provokes reality, the veil of anonymity and solitude is lifted and replaced by bursts of colour.

With an inventive stage design and accompanied by an original musical score and video projections, Cirkopolis will transport you between dream and reality in a stream of acrobatics, music and images.
