WelcomeOn behalf of the Planning Committee for the 8th Annual Sloan Consortium Blended Learning Conference and Workshop, I welcome you . This year’s conference theme, “Evidence to Practice: Fulfilling the Promise,” reflects the evolution of blended learning as a dominant modality in all aspects of education . Eight years ago at the First Blended Learning Conference and Workshop, educators from around the U .S . and Canada came together to consider blended learning as a unique instructional modality . At that time, the main discussion centered on the question: What is blended learning? Fast forward to 2011 and blended learning has become a strategy employed by K-12 schools, community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities around the world . As it prepared for this conference, the Planning Committee considered current critical questions such as: How can we use blended learning to increase access?; How do we make certain it is meeting our goals?; How are others effectively using blending learning to maximize student outcomes?; and What’s next? This discussion drove our call for proposals .

The three conference tracks: Access & Opportunity; Blended Teaching & Learning; and What Works and How Do We Know? Seeking Evidence and Impact in Blended Learning, organize the two days in a manner that gives those at various stages in blended learning the ability to build a schedule that meets individual and institutional needs . The entire program has grown considerably from past years . We had a record 120 proposal submissions, and our 2011 conference is filled with informed speakers, multiple opportunities to network, innovative ideas, and valuable take-aways . Consequently, we have a diverse schedule and a unique conference structure with 15 interactive workshops, three dynamic tracks offering 51 information sessions, 13 posters, 12 vendor showcase sessions and 5 Great Idea presentations .

We are very fortunate to have as our keynote speaker Josh Jarrett from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation . His role and leadership in the Foundation in advancing opportunities and access to education is in perfect synergy with the future-looking theme and tracks of the 2011 conference . Building on Josh’s keynote is the second plenary event: Blended Learning: Past, Present and Future . Moderated by Marc Parry, Technology Reporter for the Chronicle of Higher Education, this panel consists of leaders in blended learning and respected names you will recognize – Joel Hartman (University of Central Florida), Tanya Joosten (UW-Milwaukee), and Anthony Picciano (Hunter College/CUNY) . Well worth getting up early on Tuesday .

Once again, welcome to “Evidence to Practice: Fulfilling the Promise .” I hope you enjoy the sessions . Be sure to share ideas with colleagues and take advantage of the resort’s amenities . Thank you for investing your time and resources by attending the conference .

Mary Niemiec, Conference Chair

Faculty Development for Blended LearningCourt I/JBlended Teaching and LearningDylan Barth (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)Gerald Bergtrom (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)Tanya Joosten (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)Matthew Russell (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)

To help faculty make the transition to hybrid or blended teaching, institutions are creating faculty development programs to guide faculty as they redesign their courses and get ready to teach courses that are partially online

and partially face-to-face . This is necessary because successful blended teaching requires a significant course transformation . Faculty must rethink and redesign their course, create new learning activities, and integrate online and face-to-face course components . Most faculty also have to learn new teaching skills in order to successfully manage online interaction, incorporate new methods of assessment, and effectively use the interactive and organizational tools found in course management systems . Based on key elements of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee’s Blended Faculty Development Program, this pre-conference workshop will identify essential elements of a faculty development program for successful redesign for blended learning . Participants will gain insight into how a course can be redesigned to take advantage of the blended model, discuss their own possible redesign strategies with seasoned blended course instructors, and leave with strategies and materials which they can use in designing and teaching their own blended courses .

Faculty Development for Blended LearningCourt I/JMonday March 28, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Interactive Workshop - Session 1 & 2Blended Teaching and LearningDylan Barth (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)Gerald Bergtrom (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)Tanya Joosten (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)Matthew Russell (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US)
